What people have been know to say about Chor Boogie...
”With his innovative techniques and spiritual color philosophies, Chor Boogie is the king”… SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN
“If you ever visited or live in the Bay Area, you’ve seen at least one of Chor Boogie’s striking murals. Boogie’s work ends uplooking more like fine art, which is pretty impressive considering he paints solely in aerosol”…
JUXTAPOZ
“Internationally acclaimed virtuoso of spray -paint Chor Boogie presents his solo show: Romanticism, where imagination and emotion meet the healing power of color therapy. Having emerged, in part, from the world of “Graffiti Art” Chor profoundly
expounds on the genre in style, technique, form, composition, and conceptual underpinnings, as he can no longer be simply categorized as such. Viewers often find it nearly unbelievable that his masterful works are created almost solely from spray paint”…
NBC
“Chor Boogie (born Jason Lamar Hailey) is taking spray painting to new heights in the art world”… DUB Magazine
Chor Boogie is one of the premier American spray paint artists and muralists working today”… ART is SPECTRUM

William Newman: Ouroboros April 2 - May 4, 2011 Opening Reception for the Artist Saturday, April 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Adamson Gallery
1515 14th Street NW
Washington, DC 20005
(202) 232-0707
Adamson Gallery is pleased to present "Ouroboros," an exhibition of new sculpture by Washington, D.C.-based artist William
Newman. An exhibition catalog, featuring poetry by Casey Smith and an essay by Malgorzata Rymsza-Pawlowska is
available. Portions of the essay are excerpted here:
Newman's work has always revealed an interest in themes of cyclicality and development in nature. The inspiration for the
artist's latest series came from Newman's farm outside of Washington D.C., where Newman has gathered fruit, vegetables
and other objects that are part of the surrounding ecosystem. While some objects - wood, stone, and the skull of an animal,
have been left as found, others that have a shorter lifespan - primarily fruits and vegetables, as well as one memorable
snake, were first sculpted in clay, and then cast in collaboration with craftsmen in Beijing as metal forms. The result is a new
ecosystem; one that is housed in an exhibition space, and which raises questions of collaboration and connectivity, material,
representation, and of life itself.
Newman's new body of work consists of natural object rendered in different sizes and using sundry materials. The majority
of pieces are cast metal - their smooth, reflective surfaces are in stark contrast to the colors and textures found in organic
matter and instead call attention to their simple and beautiful shapes. While some are slightly larger than life, objects like
an outsized pear are both familiar and unfamiliar to viewers, causing one to rethink their places, and one's own place, within
the unified environment. Other objects resemble the curves and shapes of fruit and vegetables but are unidentifiable - only a
suggestion of the possibilities of nature.
The artist describes the pieces as "intermediate objects" that signal the continuous cycle of natural life, which has many
stages of generations and destruction, but no beginning and no end; a theme that is perhaps most evident in the piece
entitled "Ouroboros," referencing the ancient symbol of the snake eating its own tail, a symbol that stands for eternity, and
regeneration from destruction. The Ouroboros has appeared in many different civilizations and religions; it is a symbol that
transcends its own context.

Shades of Pain and Hope: Art and Photography by Victims of Terror & Rocket Attacks in Israel

The art in this exhibit reflects work done by children and mothers from Sderot who are suffering
physical/emotional trauma from the fall of Kassam rockets; the photography reflects the work of victims of suicide
bombings and the Second Lebanon War in the Haifa area who have learned to use the camera lens as a means of
soulful expression of the trauma that endures. Both projects, photography from the North and the artwork from
the South, represent the different shades of trauma and of the ensuing hope that prevails. Operation Embrace, a
non-profit organization based in Potomac, MD that assists injured victims of terror attacks in Israel, has provided
funding for creative therapeutic interventions such as art and photography to help victims of terror attacks move
forward in their lives.

The 10 Conditions of Love is the story of Rebiya Kadeer, China's nightmare, the woman it accuses of inciting terrorism. It
is also the story of the other Tibet, the Muslim Tibet, the country its people call East Turkestan, but which the Chinese call
Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
It is a big story: a story of the ruthless oppression of millions of people; of the geopolitics of energy; of Super Power
politicking over the War on Terror; and of the pain of a deeply loving family torn violently apart. Exiled in the US, Rebiya
Kadeer is fighting for the human rights of her people, the Uyghur (pron. wee-ger), China's oppressed Muslim Turkish
minority. But Rebiya Kadeer's campaign condemns her sons to on-going solitary confinement in a Chinese prison. Having
done six years of solitary confinement herself, she understands the appalling consequences for them of her actions, but
she will not relent. Twice nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and once the richest businessperson in China, Rebiya
Kadeer is a remarkable woman who pays daily a terrible price for patriotism.

It has become almost a cliché to say that we live in a time of globalization, but the
spiritual dimensions of contemporary globalization are less well understood. We
are living in a time where religions and religious practitioners are meeting one
another and being transformed in the process. Some scholars suggest that we are
witnessing the dawn of the Second Axial Age. Professor Prabhu will first explore
the possibility that a Second Axial Age is dawning, both similar to and different

from the First Axial Age (800-200 BCE). Second, he will suggest that dialogue and
depth-encounter are keynotes of this age with profound implications for social,
political and personal life. Third, he will explore one of these implications, the
character of religious identity at both denominational and personal levels.
Joseph Prabhu is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) and
member of the Executive Committee of the Parliament of the World's Religions.

Too often, immigrants, Muslim Americans, gays and lesbians,African Americans, Arab Americans, and others are portrayed asalien and dangerous to our democracy and society. Suchbombasts inflame a toxic political environment and thwartpragmatic policy solutions. The assassination attempt againstArizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords jarred the country, forcing publicofficials to commit to more comity across political party lines. Yeta return to their legislative arenas reminded them that pastattempts at civility failed because compromising on contentiousissues is seen as political weakness rather than a statesmanly reach for solutions. Notwithstanding calls for more civilizedpublic discourse, Kansas state Rep. Virgil Peck suggested thathunters could control illegal immigration as they control wildswine – by shooting them from helicopters. In Orange County,CA, councilwoman Deborah Pauly called a fundraiser of theIslamic Circle of North America “pure, unadulterated evil,”adding, “I know quite a few Marines who will be willing to helpthese terrorists to an early meeting in Paradise.”
On Tuesday, April 12, 2011, the Center for American Progress willhost a discussion that explores politicians’ broken promises torestore civility to policy debates, and delves into the harm causedby heated rhetoric on Capitol Hill and across the United States.
Panelists will challenge the stereotypes against whole groups of
people, provide historical perspectives of current attempts torestore civility, and suggest how to move forward on unresolvedissues.

For more than thirty years, China's development model has relied on the extensive use of production factors which have
been relatively abundant in China, especially labor, land, certain natural resources, and in the 2000s, increasing amounts
of capital. However, this strategy, which created an export and investment-driven pattern of development and a
consequential pattern of industrialization, must inevitably come to end. Dr. Christopher A. McNally posits that Chinese
efforts to undertake a transition from export and investment-driven growth towards consumption-driven growth are likely to
rely on continued state guidance. In this seminar, he will also discuss how the Chinese government may attempt to steer
the economy towards a new growth path and highlight the effects policy changes might have on the global free market
system.

A year ago, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced its "America Healing" initiative, a five-year, $75 million program of
grants focusing “on bringing healing to divided communities and bridging racial gaps in the areas of education, health,
uvenile justice, economic success, the media, and other areas.”
Writing in NCRP‟s Responsive Philanthropy , Dr. Gail Christopher, Kellogg‟s vice president for program strategy, noted
that the initiative reflects a belief that “our racialized social and opportunity structures have generated and continue to
generate two consistent outcomes: privilege for some, and obstacles, pain and suffering for others.” Acknowledging this
fact, however painful, is the “beginning of the healing process.” “In mandating that the W.K. Kellogg Foundation become
an effective anti-racist organization,” she wrote, “the foundation‟s board of trustees acknowledged both the implicit
benefits of white privilege and the foundation‟s obligation to be responsive to the needs produced by centuries of
structural racism.”
Kellogg‟s announcement was viewed skeptically by Stephan Thernstrom, Winthrop Research Professor of History at
Harvard University. Writing for the Wall Street Journal , he asked “What evidence convinced Kellogg that racism is such a
clear-and-present danger to the children of America today? Foundation officials point to racial and ethnic disparities. . . .
But is it self-evident that these economic and educational differences are simply or even largely „the consequences of
racism?‟”
Join us for a discussion of the “America Healing” initiative and its intellectual underpinnings, featuring Sterling Speirn,
President and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Kellogg Vice President Dr. Gail Christopher; Harvard Professor
Stephan Thernstrom; and Ron Christie, political strategist and author of Acting White: The Curious History of a Racial

and D.C. Public Schools worker
The Washington Post has reported that recent
census statistics show the Black population in
the place once affectionately known as the
Chocolate City has dropped by more than 39,000
over the last decade, going from 70 percent of
residents to less than 50 in the last few decades.
Public schools and social services are under
attack. Housing and rent prices have soared,
making city living almost impossible for
working-class families, laying bare the lines of
income, class and race.
At the same time, working-class people face constant threats to our jobs, homes and livelihoods,
while the police set up racist checkpoints in our neighborhoods and gun down our youth in the
street, driving us from our homes.
Join us for a discussion, including:
Why the D.C. government relentlessly pursues gentrification at the expense of District
workers
How gentrification is changing the face of Washington
Why do those who claim to represent us continue to attack us while pandering to the rich?
and
Tax the Rich!
Congress has again extended tax cuts to the most wealthy while workers are fighting for our jobs,
homes and basic needs. When polled, 61 percent of respondents have stated that the solution tothe budget crisis is to tax the rich.
Working people get it ... why won’t the government do it?

In the wake of the global economic crisis—with a record 217 million
workers still unemployed worldwide—Exiting from the Crisis
represents an emerging consensus among global union economistsand leaders on the economic policies needed—at national, regional
and global levels—to achieve stronger and more balanced, equitable
and sustainable growth for the global economy.
The perspective represented by this volume is the basis both for
global union leaders to engage other popular movements and governments but also for
global union economists to engage progressive economists worldwide.
Exiting from the Crisis is the product of the Global Unions Taskforce on a New Growth
Model, a joint project of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Trade
Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC), the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)and the Global Union Research Network (GURN). The task force involves more than 30
global trade union economists from a wide array of advanced, emerging and developing
countries.

Please join the SID-Washington Gender in Development Workgroup for a panel discussion on "The Hidden
Role of Gender in Food Security & Value Chain Development."
Investing in agricultural development has long been recognized as one of the best ways to reduce poverty
in the long term, whether the goal is to feed individual families or to help economies grow. In addition, research has shown that women in developing countries carry out much of the work with agricultural crops
and production. Women are also more likely to use income from these activities for food, healthcare and
education for their children, helping lift entire communities out of poverty and achieve sustainableeconomic growth.
This panel will focus on successful value chain strategies, particularly those involving women, to boost
income and achieve food security. Specific interventions, success stories and private sector alliances will
be discussed in the context of capacity building, access to markets, quality standards and post-harvesthandling.
