gives Sydney win in thriller over

Wollongong,NSW- The Sydney Blues have qualified for the 2014 PlayOffs with a thrilling 16-14 victory over the Wollongong Miners. The

Blues had to secure victory with a last second field goal to Mike

WIlliams who nailed a 48 yarder in wet and windy conditions."He was

the hero out there today" said Coach Graeme Eadie. "Kickers live for

these moments and I really thought he would struggle with it but as

soon as it left the boot it was over".

The Blues once again found a way to win. Their blitz defence was not

as effective this week in that it produced just 5 sacks and no turnovers

but by forcing the Miners to adjust to the physical nature of the

pressure it limited them to just 14 points. "I thought we stuck to the

game plan and it seemingly worked. It is difficult. I thought we had

them. I thought we did enough to win but in the end it was not

enough" said Richard Davis who finished with 19/29 passes for 173

yards and a touchdown.

Wollongong took the lead in the 1st quarter when Mitch Irhazi drove in

a 1 yard run. But Sydney took charge of the remainder of the first

quarter with two field goals to Williams and a touchdown to big Matt

Smith as he capped off a 16 play drive. The Blues were helped by the

solid play of Quarterback Matt Heasman who provided the experience

and the leadership that they have lacked all year. They were also

helped on the touchdown drive by a poor penalty from Kevin

Cunningham who crashed into the legs of Punter Josh Clark giving

Sydney back possession.

Davis found Rogers on a 13 yard touchdown pass with just 1m17

remaining to send the sell out crowd into raptures but now with

Heasman in charge the Blues were not done with. Heasman completed

6 of 8 passes as he put the Blues back into position for the long range

try that got the Blues home.
