“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God

something to be used to His own advantage;

Rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself

by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

(Philippians 2:5-11)

What About This One?

Page 29: Blueprint for Life (Discipleship). Humility, The Prerequisite to Knowing God

What Is Jesus Telling Us Here?

"Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees." (Matthew 16:6, KJV)

What is Paul Saying?

“Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?” (I Corinthians 5:6)

1st yeast = hypocrisy, impurity and corruption2nd yeast = fleshly pride, idolatry

(

Page 30: Blueprint for Life (Discipleship). Humility, The Prerequisite to Knowing God

Leaven is used 17 times in the Old Testament, (first used in Exodus 12:15),

and is used 22 times in the New Testament

In the Bible, most times when “leaven” is used in a teaching, it is almost always used with a negative connotation . It

represents sin or wickedness. Jesus wants us to know that a little “leaven” has the

potential to destroy us morally and spiritually.

Jesus is Trying to Tell Us Something Significant

Page 31: Blueprint for Life (Discipleship). Humility, The Prerequisite to Knowing God

“Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens [ferments] the whole lump [of dough]? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump [fresh dough], as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our paschal Lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us, therefore, celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (1 Corinthians 5:6-8 RSV)

He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and

righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek your

face, O Jacob. Selah.Lift up your heads, O you gates; and be you lifted up, you

everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the

LORD mighty in battle.Lift up your heads, O you gates; even lift them up, you everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
