BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR

2013

The Film…This film is a very similar story line to ours so studying it will help us discover how to better portray what we are thinking to the audience, through the uses of different camera angles, lighting and even sound. The story is of two girls growing up and falling in and out of love, both homo and heterosexual. It consists of two main female protagonists, who are both on their journey to discovering their selves.

Lighting… The lighting used in this film often reflects the emotions of the characters. For example, when the two female protagonists meet the lighting is bright, so we can clearly see their emotions and reactions to seeing each other. In contrast to this scene, later in the trailer we see one of the main protagonists crying. This lighting is much darker, again to reflect her emotions of distress and dismay. It creates an eerie feeling, as it is quite the contrast to the rest of the trailer and we can see that this is the turning point for her in the film.

Sound…The trailer starts with almost a drum roll sound, which abruptly stops when the two protagonists see each other in the street and changes to an up beat, light, happy song. This continues throughout the entire trailer, despite the mood changes. This is where our realer slightly differs, we have decided t change the music when the emotions of the main protagonist change. During our sixth shot, they music will change from an upbeat song to a more solemn one.
