The Age of Reason

SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION Renaissance inspired a spirit of curiosity in

many fields Scholars began questioning ideas that

existed for hundreds of years During the Reformation, religious leaders

challenged the way they were told to think about God and salvation

Scientific Revolution challenged the way people viewed the universe and their existence in it

The Scientific Revolution was anew way of thinking about the natural world

Based on careful observation and a willingness to question accepted beliefs

During the Renaissance, scholars uncovered many classical manuscripts – often ancient authorities didn’t agree with each other

European explorers discovered new people, plants, animals and foods not indigenous to Europe – there were new truths to be found

NEW MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE

Nicolas Copenicus – heliocentric (sun-

centered) theory

Johannes Kepler – elliptical orbits around the

sun, not circles

Galileo Galilei – laws of motion

Francis Bacon – scientific method – a logical

procedure for gathering and testing ideas

Rene Descartes – analytical geometry

Isaac Newton – laws of gravity

ENLIGHTENMENT

Philosophers admired Newton for using REASON to explain the laws of nature

People began to look for laws governing human behavior

They hoped to apply reason and the scientific method to all aspects of society – government, religion, education and economics

Enlightenment reached its height in mid-1700s
