But the practical answer for Canadians is to open our hearts and our homes and show our federal government that we can do something for our fellow human beings as soon as they can arrive on our shores. To say to Canadians, as our Prime Minister had done, that it requires more bombing and attacks on ISIS in Syria is not an answer that Canadians want to hear. We believe we have a moral duty to help our fellow human beings during times of strife and we have proven it in the past when government oppression and invastion has beset the populations of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam and Yugoslavia. We need to have the same resolve again. The reason there are so many Syrian refugees coming out of that country - an estimated 4 million - is because we have failed to act in time to help save these people from a disaster of epic proportions. There's no easy answers to the awful humanitarian crisis in Europe where Syrian refugees are desperately trying to find a welcoming country to take them in. The reason there are so many Syrian refugees coming out of that country - an estimated 4 million - is because we have failed to act in time to help save these people from a disaster of epic proportions.More bombs and missiles will mean more displacements of people. It means nothing to people already on the run, and who have died trying to escape like that poor 3 year-old boy found drowned on that Turkish beach.Because the media is often no longer at the front lines and we get war coverage from neighboring countries - as war has also taken its toll on the courageous group of reporters who want to be there - we are insulated from what has really happened when drones, missiles, bomb, incendiary devices and poisonous nerve gas rain down on innocent civilians who want nothing but peace. If Canadians were forced from their homes as Syrians have or if Hungarians - who appears to have closed their borders - the response from our friends would be fast and overwhelming. That they are from a Middle Eastern country with different beliefs should have nothing to do iwth our government policy on refugees.I suspect that this is what is going on, that Syrian refugees are considered "security risks" by a very paranoid federal government intent on stopping anyone who even resembles a terrorist from setting in our country.Terrorists make up a very small minority in these countries - they are young, male, disenchanted with their lives, have a propensity for violence and taking up arms. They have no freedom and no power. We can deal with this threat in other ways and not make it a reason or an excuse to help desperate refugees, especially children and the elderly. We can do it differently. We can show that the collective Canadian conscience is much more powerful than the will of a fearful government that cannot look beyond its borders. We are Canadian. We are citizens of the world! I hope we can unite on this issue.
