Lesson 1 Rationale: More than anything else, establishing routines and procedures for managing independent reading

will get your reading workshop off to a good start. Best of all, a tight, thoughtful organization will enable your

students to read for a substantial period of time every day. Early in the year, you will want to present a number

of minilessons on managing Reading Workshop, but once students have established the routines, you will rarely

need to revisit these lessons.

For your students, a successful experience with Reading Workshop begins with knowing the basics: how to use

the classroom library, choosing books, record their reading, and respond to their reading. Also, you will want to

establish Reading Workshop as a quiet, productive time; insist on silence from the start. When students are

engrossed in their independent reading, you can more easily confer with individuals or work with small groups

in guided reading and literature study.

During the first month of Reading Workshop, you have two critical goals:

1. Help your students think of themselves as readers by reading books that they enjoy and have them

participate in all the choices and decisions readers make.

2. Establish the roles and routines of the Reading Workshop.

Creating Reading Notebook Minilesson: 1. Students will create a Reading Notebook. This Reading Notebook will be used throughout the year for

Whole Group, a Record of Reading, and Reading Responses.

2. On the first page of the notebook, you will need to create a Record of Reading section. On the top line

of the Record of Reading, label the left margin: Date, the middle: Title/Author, and the right margin:

Genre. Leave 2 blank pages behind this section.

3. Paste a copy of the Genre Codes to the front inside cover for easy reference.

Mrs. Lopez

Page 5: BLOCK 1 Spanish › cms › lib01 › TX01000898...10/17 Mini Assessment Realistic Fiction & Traditional Literature – MUST BE SCANNED BY 10/17 There are 3 flex days in this block

4. On the next page, create a Whole Group section with about 50 blank pages behind this section.

5. After the Whole Group section pages, create a Reading Response section with the remaining blank

pages behind this section.

6. You will want to use your Reading Notebook as a model for students. Guide them in the creation of their

Reading notebook. You might want to assist students in the completion of their Reading Notebooks in

small groups throughout the rest of the week.

This needs to be completed by the end of this week. These pictures are included only to serve as a visual. You

may create your Reading Notebooks anyway that works best for you as long as you have a Record of Reading,

Whole Group section, and a Reading Response section.

First Day of School Read Aloud: After you have created the Reading Notebook, read aloud a book of your

choice. (You want to choose something your students will relate to on the first day of school.)

Management Minilesson: Selecting Books

1. Introduce Classroom Library: Say-“Este año vamos a leer muchos libros maravillosos en nuestro

salón de clase y en casa. Me gustaría presentarles a nuestra biblioteca de clase. Vamos a hablar sobre

cómo podemos escoger, leer y devolverlos en una forma que nos permite encontrar todos y usarlos

fácilmente.”

2. Share the way books are organized; point out books categorized by author, genre, topic, series,

illustrator, format, award winner or by any other category you’ve established. Show students

the place where each category of books is kept. Then show students how to take books out and

return them to each basket. Say-“ Llegaremos a compartir estos libros maravillosos en nuestro

salón de este año. Si somos responsables de seleccionar y devolverlos a las cestas, siempre podremos

encontrar los libros que queremos leer.”

Lesson 2 Management Minilesson: How Readers Choose Books

1. Introduce Ways We Choose Books: Say-“ Escogimos libros para leer en muchas maneras

diferentes y para muchos propósitos diferentes. Por ejemplo, me encanta leer misterios, y entonces

busco ese tipo de libro. ¿Que piensan sobre cuando ustedes escogen un libro para leer?” Display

the Maneras en que escogemos libros Anchor Chart and record student responses on the anchor

chart.

2. Say-“Hoy hemos puesto en una lista muchas de las diferentes maneras de escoger libros para leer.

Dejaré esta lista de maneras que los lectores escogen libros sobre la pared porque pueden pensar en

otra manera que ustedes escogen libros para leer y los podemos agregar.”

3. Write “Reading is Thinking” on a chart.

5. Group Meeting: Bring students back together to share how they chose the book they’re reading and

how well they did keeping the room completely quiet.

Lesson 3 Strategies and Skills Minilesson: Making Good Book Choices

As you teach the minilesson, create the Making Good Book Choices Anchor Chart with three

categories, indicating the characteristics of Easy, Just-Right, or Challenging.

Record the characteristics.

3. Say-“Libros “apropiados” son aquellos que entiendan bien y puede disfrutar. Leer el

libro sin problemas y tienen sólo unos pocos lugares donde necesita ir más despacio para

averiguar una palabra o pensar mas en el significado. Estos son los libros que le

ayudarán a convertirse en mejores lectores cada vez que lees. La mayoría de las veces

deberías leer libros “apropiados”. Ayúdenme escribir las características de libros

“apropiados” en el cartelón.” Record the characteristics.

Record the characteristics.

5. Independent Practice: Say-“Cuando están leyendo hoy, piensen en si el libro que están

leyendo es fácil, “apropiado” o difícil para ustedes. Cuando vuelvan al grupo, estén

preparados para compartir la categoría que mejor describen su opción. Ayer hicieron un

trabajo maravilloso leyendo en silencio para que todos pueden hacer sus mejores

pensamientos. Vamos a hacer lo mismo hoy.”

6. Group Meeting: Bring students back together to share what category (Easy, Just Right, or

Challenging) their book fits reading into and why. Then reflect how well they did keeping

the room completely quiet.

Lesson 4 Realistic Fiction Genre Immersion and Reading is Thinking-Sticky Notes

Lesson Overview: 3.8, 3.2C, Fig. 19A, Fig19B, Fig 19C

Text: El regalo de Destiny (Senderos, Unit 1, Lesson 3 pg.79-100)

Approach: Interactive Read Aloud and Minilesson

Focus: Noticing Characteristics of Realistic Fiction

Create: (BEFORE THE LESSON)

Stopping Points – Record the following on sticky notes and place on the correct pages in the text:

o Pg.80 – ¿Qué claves/pistas hasta ahora muestran que Destiny admira a la Senora Wade?

o Pg.82 – ¿Cómo influye la Sra. Wade a Destiny?

o Pg.84 – ¿Qué significaba la señora Wade cuando dijo que “las palabras son un regalo muy

poderoso"?

o After you finish reading the story ask – ¿Qué creen que sucederá con la librería de la Sra. Wade?

Strategies and Skills Minilesson: Reading is Thinking-Sticky Notes

Display the Reading is Thinking Anchor Chart that you previously created with your class in Lesson 2.

1. Introduce Reading is Thinking: Using Sticky Notes to Record Your Thinking and Talking About

(Use this example or another example of something you have read with the

class and a connection you made to the text.)

2. “Hoy usted estará pensando mientras que lee su libro. Puede pensar en lo que le gusta o no gusta,

cosas de las cuales el libro le recuerda en su vida o en otros libros o preguntas que tiene. Puede

hacer predicciones, notar algo sobre el lengua del autor o estilo, o pensar en cómo un carácter le

recuerda de alguien en su vida. Voy a escribir algunas de las ideas que hemos hablado en este

Cartelón de ancla Leer es Pensar para recordarte. Podemos añadir más adelante.” Take a moment

to list the kinds of thinking on the Reading is Thinking Anchor Chart.

Leer es pensar

Este libro me recuerda a… Esta parte me confunde…

Yo predijo…. El personaje me recuerda a… Yo pienso que…

Yo me pregunto… Por qué hizo/hace… Noté que el autor

Page 21: BLOCK 1 Spanish › cms › lib01 › TX01000898...10/17 Mini Assessment Realistic Fiction & Traditional Literature – MUST BE SCANNED BY 10/17 There are 3 flex days in this block

3. “Hoy cuando leemos "El regalo de destino", estaremos compartiendo nuestro pensamientos y

grabandolos en notas adhesivas.” Pass out two sticky notes to each student and have them place them

on top of their Readers Notebook to use during the stopping points of the IRA.

Interactive Read Aloud (IRA) “El regalo de Destiny”

1. Introduce Text. Choose an appropriate introduction to engage your students and get them thinking

about the text. You might…

o prompt students to anticipate a book by a favorite author

o invite personal connections

o provide important background knowledge

o draw attention to the genre

o prompt predictions based on the title

o ask students to make connections to a previously read text

o raise questions to spark curiosity

2. Read aloud the story to students. Stop periodically for very brief discussion of the text. Use the

Stopping Points you created before the lesson.

Stopping Points –

o After reading the pg.80, ask: – ¿Qué claves/pistas hasta ahora muestran que Destiny admira a la Senora Wade?

Record your thinking on your first sticky note. Ask for a couple of volunteers to share their

thinking.

o After reading the pg.82, ask: – ¿Cómo influye la Sra. Wade a Destiny?

o After reading the pg.84, ask: – ¿Qué significaba la señora Wade cuando dijo que “las palabras

son un regalo muy poderoso"?

o At the end of the story, ask: – ¿Qué creen que sucederá con la librería de la Sra. Wade? Record

your thinking on your first sticky note. Ask for a couple of volunteers to share their thinking.

3. In closing, you might say “El lunes, estaremos creando un cartelón ancla con características y lo que

hemos notado de ficción realista. Vamos a leer otro ficción realista historia mañana.”

4. Independent Practice: “Cuando estás leyendo hoy, marque dos lugares en su libro donde podría

compartir algo de lo que estabas pensando como habéis leído. Usa notas adhesivas para ayudarle a

recordar el lugar para que podamos compartir nuestros pensamientos cuando nos reunimos en

nuestro reunión de grupo. Tambien podemos añadir más pensamientos a la lista.”

5. Group Meeting: Following the Independent Reading time, invite students to talk together about the

thinking they did about their reading. Explain that they can talk about what they are thinking about

their reading.

6. Informal Assessment: Have students reflect on how well they followed the procedure for using

sticky notes. This can be easily accomplished with thumbs up=I did it; thumbs to the side=I need to

practice more; or thumbs down=I did not do this.

Realistic Fiction Genre Immersion and Turn and Talk Procedures

Lesson Overview: 3.8, Fig19A, Fig19B, Fig19C

Text: Un domingo súper especial (Senderos, Unit 3, Lesson 15 pg. 491)

Approach: Interactive Read Aloud and Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create Stopping Points for IRA – Record the following on sticky notes and place on the correct

pages in the text:

o On pg. 494 After Ramona tries to go out to skate, ask: “¿Creen que Ramona logrará evitar de

preparar la cena?”

o On pg. 497 After you read that the girls decide not to make something awful, say: “La autora

describe a Beezus como una persona práctica. ¿Qué creen que significa la palabra práctica ?" De

vuelta y hable sobre lo que piensas con un compañero.” Follow-up: Share thinking & ask “¿Cómo

pueden hallar el significado de la palabra práctica."

o On pg. 505 After you read the question: "¿Cómo creen que saldrá la cena? ¿Por qué? De vuelta y

hable de tu pensamiento con un compañero".

o On pg. 508 At the end of the story, ask – " ¿Cómo creen que se sienten Ramona y Beezus al final

del cuento? ".

o Follow-up: "¿Qué leccion aprendieron las hermanas de esta experiencia?" De vuelta y hable de su

pensamiento con un compañero”.

2. Create the How to Turn and Talk Effectively Anchor Chart, but leave the steps blank. You will

create the steps with your students during the lesson.

Management Minilesson: How to Turn and Talk Display the blank How to Turn and Talk Anchor Chart.

1. Introduce How to Turn and Talk: "Ayer hablamos sobre cómo los lectores piensen mientras leen, y

compartiste el pensamiento que estabas haciendo mientras leiste. Cuando hablamos con un

compañero o en grupos pequeños, nos vamos referir a nuestra conversación como "Voltear y Hablar".

Vamos a hablar un poco sobre cómo podemos "Voltear y Hablar" con uno y otro para poder hacer un

buen trabajo cuando hablamos para aprender. Voy a escribir nuestros pensamientos en este cartelón".

2. Elicit the students’ suggestions, shaping them to create a simple, clear set of guidelines. See the How

to Turn and Talk Effectively Anchor Chart for suggested language.

students in groups of 2 (or 3 when necessary). Have students turn and talk with their partner about

their favorite thing they did over the summer. As students are sharing their thinking, walk around and

listen in to groups and facilitate the conversation when necessary. Have a few groups share that you

noticed did well.

4. Group Meeting: “Hoy cuando leamos “Un domingo súper especial”, vamos a compartire nuestro

pensamiento con un compañero cuando te pido que Voltea y Habla. Asegúrese de que escuches lo

que te pido que pienses antes de dar vuelta y mirar a tu compañero.”

5. Informal Assessment: Have students reflect on how well they followed the procedure for using

Approach: Interactive Read Aloud and Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create Stopping Points for IRA – Record the following on sticky notes and place on the correct

pages in the text:

o On pg. 195 After reading that Benjamin and Karl would not give Max a stamp or a coin, ask:

“Si les ocurre por qué Benjamin y Karl no quieren compartir con Max?”

Follow-up: “¿Qué piensas sobre la relación del los hermanos? De vuelta y habla sobre su

2. Have your Reading Notebook that you created in Lesson 1ready to use for modeling under the document

camera or if you do NOT have a document camera, you will need to create an enlarged version of

the Record of Reading as an anchor chart.

Management Minilesson: Keeping a Record of Your Reading

1. Introduce Keeping a Record of Your Reading: “Han estado haciendo muy maravilloso leyendo

sus libros y pensamientos sobre sus libros. Los lectores a veces guardan una lista de libros que han

leído para poder mirar hacia atrás a su lectura. Hoy voy a mostrarles una manera de ayudarles a

recordar los libros que han leído. Adelante de su Cuaderno de Lectura creamos una sección llamada

el Registro de la Lectura. Esto es donde guardarán un registro de los libros que han leído.

2. Point to the section label and open up your Reading Notebook to this section and place it under the

document camera. If you do NOT have a document camera, you will need to create an enlarged

version of the Record of Reading as an anchor chart.

3. Model how to record a book on the Record of Reading Log using a student’s independent book as an

example. Say something like “¿Nicole, que libro estás leyendo en este momento? La vista desde el

sábado. En el Registro de Lectura de Nicole ella va a poner la feacha que comenzó el libro y

escribir el título y autor (usando letras mayúsculas donde apropriado) como esto.” Model under the

document camera or on the anchor chart.

4. “La última columna es para el código del género. La vista desde el sábado es una historia de ficcíón

que podría ocurrir hoy, por tanto lo llamamos ficción realista. Cuando Nicole termina su libro y está

Lesson 8

Realistic Fiction Genre Immersion

Lesson Overview: 3.8, Fig19A, Fig19B, Fig19C

Texts: El regalo de Destiny, Un domigo super especial, Las Palabras de Max, and El concurso de ciencias

Approach: Minilessons

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Realistic Fiction Genre Study Anchor Chart with the definition completed, but leaving both

the Noticings and Book Examples columns blank. You will complete this with your students.

Realistic Fiction Noticings Minilesson

1. Display the Realistic Fiction Genre Anchor Chart and discuss the definition of realistic fiction with

your students.

2. Explain that all Realistic Fiction stories have certain characteristics. You might say “Hemos leído

cuatro ejemplos del texto de ficción realista: El regalo de Destiny, Las palabras de Max, Un domingo

súper especial, y El concurso de ciencias.” Ask “¿Qué tienen todas estas historias en común?”

Facilitate the discussion using the bullet points below. You may have to model your thinking

about the genre noticings.

All of these stories …

fictional, but could happen in real life

the author made them up with a specific purpose in mind.

the story happens in a real place in today’s world

the author created characters that are like real people

each story has a unique plot, but all have characters who have a problem that is resolved

through a series of events

the author could choose to have a character tell the story; or the author could choose to have a

speaker outside the story, referred to as the narrator, to tell the story.

the author creates the story with a message to the reader called the theme. The theme is often a

lesson that the character learns about life.

3. Following the discussion, complete the Genre Noticings Column of the Realistic Fiction Anchor Chart.

4. Distribute a copy of the Realistic Fiction Genre Anchor Chart to students with the noticings already

filled in.

Lo que hemos notado

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Sequence of Events Anchor Chart with the definition completed.

2. Create the Sequence of Events diagram Anchor Chart, but leave blank. You will

complete this with your students.

Sequence of Events Minilesson

1. Display the Sequence of Events Anchor Chart and discuss the definition of

sequencing with your students.

a. Explain that each Realistic Fiction story has a unique plot, but all have

characters who have a problem that is resolved through a series of events

b. These events occur in an order that helps to resolve the character’s problem.

c. This order is referred to as the Sequence of Events.

2. Using Max’s Words, complete the Sequence of Events diagram Anchor Chart with

the students’ help. Be sure to facilitate the discussion to ensure that the most important

events that contribute to the movement of the plot are the only ones included on the

Lesson Overview: 3.8A

Texts: Un domigo super especial

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the How Events Influence Future Events Anchor Chart with the definitions

completed, and using the completed Plot Line from The Extra Good Sunday.

Understanding the influence of events on future events Minilesson

1. Display How Events Influence Future Events Anchor Chart and discuss the definition

and how authors use events to influence future events and push the character forward to

resolving the conflict.

2. Explain that authors often use one event to cause, or influence future events in the plot.

Cómo los eventos influyen en futuros eventos Título: _________________________

3. Identify which events cause future events in The Extra Good Sunday. (Ramona and

Beezus have to cook dinner……and they don’t want to do it.) On the Plot Line draw an

arrow from one event to a future event and explain on a sticky note how that event leads

to the future event and pushes the plot forward towards the resolution.

4. Independent Practice: Students will read Destiny’s Gift (Journeys) and add some

examples of how events influence future events to their completed Plot Line from the

previous day, either just writing it in or using sticky notes

5. Reading Workshop: Each day as students complete the Independent Practice, they

Lesson 14

Bridging: Understanding Plot and Summarizing

Lesson Overview: 3.8A, 3.8/Fig 19E

Text: Un domingo súper especial

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Using the stems from the Bridging Handout, write questions for The Extra Good Sunday. You will

add these to your Plot Line Anchor Chart and the Summarizing Fiction Anchor Chart during the

lesson.

Using the story, The Extra Good Sunday, a possible question could be: What effect does

Ramona’s conversation with Beezus on pg. have on the story? (Their conversation leads to them

making something good for dinner or the turning point of the story.)

Bridging: Understanding Plot and Summarizing

1. Display the Plot Line Anchor Chart and the Summarizing Fiction Anchor Chart and explain that

test makers have certain language that they use when they write test questions.

You must explicitly make the connection between the skills they have learned in class and what

the test question is asking the reader to do.

2. Using the question stems you wrote for The Extra Good Sunday, read the first question and explain

what the question is asking the reader to do. Then model using the appropriate anchor chart and

evidence from the text, The Extra Good Sunday, to support your thinking in crafting your answer.

3. Continue using this same process until you have bridged each question.

4. Independent Practice: Students will complete the bridging assessment…..

Use the data from this assessment to make decisions about individual student’s needs.

5. Reading Workshop: Each day as students complete the Independent Practice, they should read

their Independent Book, record their thinking on sticky notes and paste them in their Reading

Notebook in the Reading Response section, and continue to keep a record of their reading.

help you infer that….

3. Use this same process to continue modeling how readers make inferences to better understand

characters.

4. Independent Practice: Students will use the text The Science Fair and make three inferences using

the character’s thoughts, words, and actions in their Reading Notebook.

5. Reading Workshop: Each day as students complete the Independent Practice, they should read

their Independent Book, record their thinking on sticky notes and paste them in their Reading

Lesson 17

Understanding How Characters Change in a Story

Lesson Overview: 3.8B/Fig. 19D

Texts: Las Palabras de Max

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Understanding How Characters Change Throughout the Story Anchor Chart with the

text examples and inferences filled in. (You can use the Understanding Characters Anchor Chart from

lesson 16 and add the new information for today’s lesson.)

Understanding Characters

1. Display the Understanding How Characters Change Throughout the Story Anchor Chart and

discuss with your students how authors use events in the plot to bring about a change in the character.

2. Read the first excerpt from the text about Max. Explain how his specific thoughts, actions, and words

help you infer that…. Esto es desde el principio de la historia donde aprendemos sobre el conflicto.

La siguiente inferencia que hacemos sobre Max & sus hermanos es a partir del medio de la

historia. ¿Han cambiado? La última inferencia que hicimos sobre los hermanos de Max era a

partir del final de la historia cuando su conflicto se resolvió. ¿Han cambiado Benjamin y Karl?

¿Cómo cambiaron? ¿Por qué ocurrió el cambio?

3. Thinking aloud with your students, compose a sentence that explains how Benjamin and Karl change

and what caused their change. Record the sentence to the anchor chart.

4. Independent Practice: Students will use the text The Science Fair and the three inferences they

made about the character in lesson 16 to answer the questions: ¿Cómo cambió el personaje?and

Texts: Las Palabras de Max

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Character Relationships Anchor Chart and leave the text boxes blank. You will complete

the inferences with your students.

Understanding Characters

1. Display the Character Relationships Anchor Chart.

2. Characters often influence the way other characters act or feel. This is reflected in their relationship.

In this story the Main Characters are Max, Benjamin and Karl. What is their relationship? Are

they sisters, mother/daughter, friends, cousins? They are brothers

How did Benjamin and Karl influence the way Max acted and/or felt? The brothers wouldn’t

share their collections, and this caused Max to create a collection of his own.

How did Max creating his own collection influence the way Benjamin & Karl acted or felt? At

first the brothers thought Max’s collecting of words was silly. But then they realized there was

so much to do and ways to have fun with his collection. The brothers learned to share, have fun

together, and respect each other’s interests.

3. Thinking aloud with your students, compose a sentence that explains Mina and Ruth’s relationship and

locate text evidence to support your thinking. (Example: Ruth y Mina son amigas que desafían al

una al otra para hacer todo lo posible.) Record on the Anchor Chart.

Lesson 19

Bridging: Understanding and Inferring about Characters

Lesson Overview: 3.8B, 3.8/Fig 19E

Text: Un domingo súper especial

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Using the stems from the Bridging Handout, write questions for The Extra Good Sunday. You will

add these to your Understanding Character Anchor Chart and the How Characters Change Anchor

Chart during the lesson.

Using the story, The Extra Good Sunday, a possible question could be: ¿Qué efecto tiene la

conversación de Ramona con Beezus en pág. de la historia? (Their conversation leads to them

making something good for dinner or the turning point of the story.)

Bridging: Understanding Plot and Summarizing

1. Display the Understanding Character Anchor Chart and the How Characters Change Anchor

Chart and explain that test makers have certain language that they use when they write test questions.

Imagery in Realistic Fiction

Lesson Overview: 3.10A, 3.10/Fig 19D

Text: El Desierto es mi madre/The Desert is My Mother by Pat Mora (2nd

grade CScope Collection)

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Imagery/Sensory Language Anchor Chart with the definition, the text, and the examples of

sensory language filled in, but leave the rest of the chart blank.

2. Prepare a list of imagery phrases from the text for display after reading the book.

o Me sirve rojas tunas en nopal espinoso.

o Me salpica la cara con gotitas de lluvia en día asoleado.

o Me grita con truenos y me tira relámpagos.

o Me roza la cara con su cálido aliento.

o Me ofrece turquesa para mis dedos, una flor rosada para mi cabello.

o Me arrulla con sus canciones de viento.

o Y florece en el brillo del sol, en el silencio de la nieve, en las arenas más secas.

Imagery in Realistic Fiction

1. Display Imagery/Sensory Language Anchor Chart and discuss how authors use language to create

images in the reader’s mind.

Sensory Language

o words and phrases the author uses to appeal to the readers five senses (sight, taste, touch,

smell, and hear)

o words and phrases the author uses to evoke emotion or feeling

o Good readers use the author’s language to play a “movie” in their mind as they read.

Sensory language makes that “movie” more vivid.

2. Say-“Hoy les voy a leer El Desierto es mi madre. Mientras leo escucha para palabras o frases que

captará la atención de sus sentidos, o crear una imagen en su cabeza.

3. Read El Desierto es mi madre. Using the 2 selected phrases from above and fill in the anchor chart,

modeling your thinking/mental picture for the students, and what the author is showing/implying to the

reader (you).

4. Independent Practice: “Hoy en su Cuaderno de Lectura, copiará en el cartelón de Las

Approach: Minilesson

Imagery in Realistic Fiction

1. Display the Imagery Anchor Chart from Lesson 20, and review/discuss imagery and why authors use it

when they write.

2. Say-“Hoy voy a compartir un extracto o una pieza de una historia. El autor E.B. White usa imagines

para ayudar al lector major a entender e imaginar el escenario de La teleraña de Carlota. Escuche

atentamente cuando leyo esta parte de la historia. Read pg.13-the top of pg.15 (“Here she sat quietly

during the long afternoons thinking and listening and watching Wilbur.”).

3. After finishing the section have students turn and talk about how the author’s description/imagery helped

them. Share a few with the whole group.

4. Then Say- “Ahora que ya tuvieron la oportunidad de escuchar las palabras del autor y discútalas con

sus compañeros, van a tener la oportunidad de mostrar visualmente como se parece la casa de Wilbur.”

Have students return to their seats and give each of them a blank piece of unlined paper. Instruct the

students that you will be rereading the same pages again. This time you would like for them to sketch

what the words/description/imagery the author uses creates in their mind on the paper. Afterwards, allow

a few students to share if they’re comfortable doing so.

5. Independent Practice: Today during independent practice you will do the same thing we just practiced

in the Response Section of your Reading Notebook. Sketch the picture/images your book’s author creates

in your head as you read today. Be sure to include the title of your book and today’s date on the page of

Lesson 23 Traditional Literature Genre Immersion and Different Ways to Respond

Lesson Overview: 3.5 Fig. 19A, Fig19B, Fig 19C

Text: Martina Una Cucarachita Muy Linda: Un Cuento Cubano (Cscope Collection Unit 1)

Approach: Interactive Read Aloud and Minilesson

Focus: Noticing Characteristics of Traditional Literature

Create: (BEFORE THE LESSON)

1. Different Ways to Respond Anchor Chart

2. Stopping Points – Record the following on sticky notes and place on the correct pages in the text:

o After reading the pg. with the rooster & coffee spilled on him – “¿Qué se puede inferir sobre el

gallo?”

o After reading the pg. with the lizard. – “don Lagarto dice “Yo soy así, silencioso.” “Y yo que creí

que serías un espléndido bocadito…quiero decir, Esposa.” ¿Estas pruebas del texto mejor muestran

que el lagarto es qué?”

o After reading the pg. that Martina didn’t want to do the coffee test on Perez – “¿Por qué es el

café, tan importante para la trama de la historia? "

o After you finish reading the story – “¿Voltear y hablar con su compañero de qué creen que el

autor quiso que nosotros como lectores aprendiéramos de esta historia?”

Strategies and Skills Minilesson: Different Ways to Respond 1. Introduce Different Ways to Respond: “Juntos hemos compartido nuestro pensamiento hablando de

Display the Reading Response that you have

written in your Teacher’s Reading Notebook under the document camera and read it to the

students. If you do NOT have a document camera, you will need to create an enlarged version of the

Reading Response as an Anchor Chart.

3. Ask students: “¿Qué es lo que observa sobre la respuesta que escribí?” Discuss student responses.

4. Display the Different Ways to Respond Anchor Chart.

ayudarle.” Read and discuss topics.

Reading Notebook.

6. “Hoy cuando leemos ____________, estaremos compartiendo nuestro pensamiento y grabandolo en

notas adhesivas. Pass out two sticky notes to each student and have them place them on top of

their Reading Notebook to use during the stopping points of the IRA.

Interactive Read Aloud (IRA)

1. Introduce Text:

You might say: The story I’ll be sharing with you today is Martina the Beautiful

Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale. Does anyone know where Cuba is located? (You may have a

map or globe to show students where it is.) Cubans speak Spanish. You will hear several words

today as I read in Spanish. However, they will be followed in English so you know their

meaning. This story is about a beautiful cockroach. Do you think that a cockroach is beautiful?

Let’s read about Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale.

2. Read aloud the story to students. Stop periodically for very brief discussion of the text. Use the

Stopping Points you created before the lesson.

Stopping Points –

a. After you read the first page, say: Noto que la familia de Martina parece entusiasmada con su

matrimonio. Pero su abuelo o abuela, parecía diferente. ¿Cuáles son tus pensamientos? Have a

few students share their thinking.

b. After reading the pg. with the rooster & coffee spilled on him, say – “¿Qué se puede inferir

sobre el gallo?”Have a few students share their thinking.

c. After reading the pg. with the lizard, say – “don Lagarto dice “Yo soy así, silencioso.” “Y yo

que creí que serías un espléndido bocadito…quiero decir, Esposa.” ¿Estas pruebas del texto

mejor muestran que el lagarto es qué?” Record your thinking on your sticky note. “Dé vuelta

y hable con su compañero y comparta su pensamiento.” Have a few students share their

thinking.

d. After reading the pg. that Martina didn’t want to do the coffee test on Perez, say – “¿Por

qué es el café, tan importante para la trama de la historia? " Record your thinking on your

sticky note. Have a few students share their thinking.

e. At the end of the story, say: Dígame que lección siente que el autor quiere que nosotros como

lectores aprendemos de esta historia. Dé vuelta y habla con su compañero sobre de lo que usted

piensa que es el tema de esta historia. Have a few students share their thinking.

Lesson 24 Traditional Literature Genre Immersion and Using Sticky Notes

Lesson Overview: 3.5 Fig. 19A, Fig19B, Fig 19C

Text: Los pájaros de la cosecha (Journeys Unit 2 Lesson 8)

Approach: Interactive Read Aloud and Minilesson

Focus: Noticing Characteristics of Traditional Literature

Create: (BEFORE THE LESSON)

1. Stopping Points – Record the following on sticky notes and place on the correct pages

in the text:

e. After you finish reading the story ask – “¿Creen que el secreto de Juan tiene que

ver solo con la agricultura?”

Strategies and Skills Minilesson: Using Sticky Notes 1. Introduce Using Sticky Notes to Prepare for Writing Responses: “Hemos estado

2. CAUTION: o You will not want to overdo the use of sticky notes because it will interrupt the

reading process. Some students will not need the support of sticky notes.

o Your students should be reading and recording their thinking everyday. A

response should be completed by the end of the week. (Some students will

write a couple of sentences each day. Other students will wait and complete the

response on Friday. Either way is acceptable. If you have students that are

reading lower leveled text and reading more than 1 book a week, they will need

to choose 1 book to write their weekly response about.)

o The purpose of the reading response is for students to record their thinking

about what they are reading and to share that with others.

3. Common Reading Response Roadblocks: o If students think they must complete a book before they write a response, then

Page 81: BLOCK 1 Spanish › cms › lib01 › TX01000898...10/17 Mini Assessment Realistic Fiction & Traditional Literature – MUST BE SCANNED BY 10/17 There are 3 flex days in this block

3rd grade

remind them that the purpose is not a summary of the book; but rather a written

collection of their thoughts while they read.

o If students are abandoning a book daily, then they need to write about why they

abandoned the book and what kind of book they want to read next and why.

o If students are reading a different book each day, then they are not engaging

with text. You will need to confer with them to give them a direction in

selecting appropriate books.

o “Fake reading” is often a sign of choosing the wrong book. You will need to

confer with these students to help them choose books that are engaging to

them.

Interactive Read Aloud (IRA)

1. Introduce Text:

o You might say: “La historia que compartiré con usted hoy es Los pájaros de la

cosecha. Es sobre un hombre llamado Juan que tiene un sueño. ¿ Has tenido

alguna vez un sueño qué deseas se haría realidad? Los estudiantes comparten si

lo desea. Vamos a leer y averiguar más sobre el sueño de Juan y si se hace

realidad.”

2. Read aloud the story to students. Stop periodically for very brief discussion of the text.

Use the Stopping Points you created before the lesson.

Stopping Points –

f. After pg.260, say: “¿Por qué creen que es importante para Juan tener tierras?"

"¿Qué podría hacer con la tierra si Don Tobias le diera una parcela?"

g. After Pg.265, say – “¿Tato Chon y Juan hicieron un trato justo?” “Dé vuelta a su

compañero y hable sobre esto.”

h. After Pg.267, say – “¿Qué quiere decir Juan por este pensamiento?”

i. After Pg.275, say – “¿De qué manera son diferentes las personas del pueblo con

respect a Juan cuando ven su cosecha?”

j. After you finish reading the story ask – “¿Creen que el secreto de Juan tiene que

ver solo con la agricultura?”

Flor El Conejo, and El Rey león y el escarabajo

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Create the Traditional Literature Genre Study Anchor Chart with the definition

completed, but leaving both the Noticings and Book Examples columns blank. You will

complete this with your students.

Traditional Literature Noticings Minilesson

1. Display the Traditional Literature Genre Anchor Chart and discuss the definition

of traditional literature with your students.

2. Explain that all Traditional Literature has certain characteristics. You might say

“Hemos leído cuatro ejemplos de literatura tradicional: ASK " ¿Qué tienen todas

estas historias en común?" Facilitate the discussion using the bullet points below.

You may have to model your thinking about the genre noticings.

All of these stories …

a. Each of the stories teach a lesson, moral, and has an overall theme

b. Often there is a good and evil character, they may be people or animals,

animals often talk in traditional tales

c. The setting is long ago in a specific place where the story usually originated

d. There may be different versions of the same story from different parts of the

world

e. Traditional stories are short made-up stories, often retold over many years

f. Some examples of traditional literature are: legends, myths, tall tales, fairy

tales, fables, and folktales each having their own unique features

3. Following the discussion, complete the Genre Noticings Column of the Traditional

Literature Anchor Chart.

4. Distribute a copy of the Traditional Literature Genre Anchor Chart to students

with the noticings already filled in.

5. For each Noticing, cite an example from one of the books read this week and record it

in the Book Examples column of the anchor chart. (A completed Traditional Literature

Genre Anchor Chart has been included at the end of this lesson.) Students will write

the text examples on their copy.

6. Students will paste the completed Traditional Literature Genre Chart in the Whole

Group Section of their Reading Notebook.

2. Say-“ Hemos pasado las últimas semanas trabajando con texto ficción. Todas estas historias contienen

los componentes principales de personajes, ambiente, problema/conflicto y resoluciones. Hoy nos

centraremos sólo en el ambiente de 2 de nuestros cuentos tradicionales más recientemente leídos.”

3. Say-“¿Quién puede explicar en sus propias palabras lo que ambiente significa?” Make sure that time

and place are included in the discussion.

You may have

students share if you come back together for a group meeting, or share with a partner, or you may wish to

look over their responses yourself.

6. Reading Workshop: Each day as students complete the Independent Practice, they should read their

Independent Book, record their thinking on sticky notes and paste them in their Reading Notebook in the

Reading Response section, and continue to keep a record of their reading.

Distribute a copy of the Purpose of Theme Anchor Chart to your students.

Discuss and define what theme is with your students.

Refer to previously read texts in the Realistic Fiction(Destiny’s Gift, Max’s Words, The Science

Fair, The Extra Good Sunday) and decide together which common theme(s) that could apply

3. Independent Practice: Students will identify the theme of their independent book and write it on a

sticky note and stick it in their Reading Notebook in the Response Section. If time allows have a

group meeting and have students share their theme sticky notes and explain their reasoning for the

theme they chose. You may add sticky notes to the Purpose of Theme Anchor under Reader’s

Thoughts, and then ask for examples of the author’s words to add, and then how the students’ feel it

applies to life in the real world.

4. Reading Workshop: Students engage in Reading Workshop when they complete the Independent

Practice.

Mientras estaba en la clase de Inglés en

el grado siete con mi mejor amiga, ella

tomó y copió un papel que había escrito.

No mi di cuenta que había hecho, hasta

La hormiga y el saltamontes

Illustrated by Scott Roberto

En un día de verano en el campo había un

saltamontes saltando alrededor, felizmente

chirriando y cantando. Una hormiga pasa

cargando con mucho trabajo una

mazorca de maíz que llevaba a su nido.

"¿Por qué no vienes a charlar conmigo, en

lugar de estar trabajando tan duro?" le

pregunta el saltamontes.

"Estoy ayudando a almacenar comida

necesidad.

Lesson 32

Bridging: Theme

Lesson Overview: 3.5A, 3.5/Fig 19D

Text: Los pájaros de la cosecha

Approach: Minilesson

BEFORE THE LESSON

1. Using the stems from the Bridging Handout, write questions for The Harvest Birds. You will add these

to your Understanding Theme Anchor Chart during the lesson.

o Using the story, The Harvest Birds , a possible question could be: ¿Cuál es el tema principal de

este cuento popular?

Bridging: Understanding Theme

1. Display the Understanding Theme Anchor Chart and explain that test makers have certain language

that they use when they write test questions.

o You must explicitly make the connection between the skills they have learned in class and what

the test question is asking the reader to do.

Using the question stems you wrote for The Harvest Birds, read the first question and explain what the

question is asking the reader to do. Then model using the appropriate anchor chart and evidence from

the text, The Harvest Birds, to support your thinking in crafting your answer.

Continue using this same process until you have bridged each question.

Independent Practice: Students will complete the bridging assessment…..

o Use the data from this assessment to make decisions about individual student’s needs.

Reading Workshop: Each day as students complete the Independent Practice, they should read

their Independent Book, record their thinking on sticky notes and paste them in their Reading

Notebook in the Reading Response section, and continue to keep a record of their reading.
