President’s MessageSeptember 2013

Dear Blanchet Community,

Blanchet was blessed with another successful school year in 2012-13. We dedicated our new Student Center with an official blessing by Fr. Todd Molinari, celebrated the talents and achievements of the Class of 2013, formed an alumni association, and our Board of Directors received a national award for excellence from the National Catholic Education Association, and much more. I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished this past year.

As I prepare to leave Blanchet Catholic School for a new opportunity in the Salem community, I am thankful for each student, parent, faculty, staff and board member and especially those who

support Blanchet with prayers and donations. Without all of you, Blanchet would not be the success it is today. I am grateful that Mr. Tony Guevara, Blanchet’s current Principal, was asked to serve as both President and Principal for Blanchet. His experience as president/principal of another Catholic school, and as director of development at a large Catholic school in California, will ensure a smooth transition for the Blanchet family. I can step into my new position knowing that Blanchet Catholic School will be well taken care of.

I’m pleased to report that the technology enhancements planned for the summer were also completed. The computer cabling was replaced throughout the school, and the new digital media Macintosh lab will be installed before school begins. All of these upgrades and many more were made possible by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust grant and 77 donors who contributed to the “Murdock Match” opportunity. In addition to our technology improvements and attaining our financial milestones, the 2012-2013 school year was noteworthy for continued academic, athletic and extra-curricular achievements that are detailed in the pages of this President’s Report. I am sure that you will enjoy the stories and photographs of highlights from this past school year.

I am thankful that serving the Blanchet community was part of God’s plan for me. I will keep you in my prayers and know that His blessings will be abundant for Blanchet and each of you.

Major School FundraisersDonations and fundraising events accounted for over 20% of the school’s budget during the school year. Blanchet parents are asked to annually contribute to three major fundraisers. These fundraisers, described below, netted over $245,000 for students and programs – an increase from the 2011-2012 school year. We are very grateful for the support received from parents and donors.

16th Annual Benefit Auction – “A Vintage Garden Gala” – The school’s largest annual fundraiser netted $103,000 for our operating budget, a $6,000 increase from the previous year. We greatly appreciate the volunteer committee that organized this successful event and the over 340 attendees who enjoyed a fantastic evening in support of our school.

Student Fundraiser - Raffle – This was the 10th year for the annual raffle and Blanchet students netted over $47,000 for operations. We gave away great prizes including a Bistro set, iPad mini, Las Vegas vacation and much more. We are extremely appreciative to everyone who has supported this fundraiser with donations and with buying or selling raffle tickets.

Annual Fund – Our annual fund, “Realizing Our Dreams @ 18,” featured 18 Blanchet students who each in their own way reflect the many gifts and talents that are represented in our diverse student body. We netted over $49,000 for this fundraiser, all of which goes to support students and programs such as athletics, co-curricular clubs and activities. Donors who contributed

$500 or more had the opportunity to customize a stepping stone in the courtyard, and donors of $250 or more will have their name engraved on a custom boulder that will be installed in a new prayer garden in the courtyard.

Five Year Plan and Foundation for the Future Campaign – We have made considerable progress on our goals in the first three years of our Strategic Five-Year plan. During the 2012-13 school year we dedicated the new 10,600 sq. ft. Student Center and made significant technology improvements including new fiber optic wiring, new servers, hubs and the installation of a new Digital Media Lab. A new driveway and additional building improvements were also completed during the summer of 2013.

The goal of the Foundation for the Future Campaign is to fund the priorities of the five-year plan which include: upgrading technology, building and renovating facilities, providing tuition assistance and enhancing the curriculum. To date, over $4.2 million has been raised towards our $4.6 million goal. As we begin the 2013-14 school year we look forward to continuing to work on the remaining needs identified in the five-year plan such as implementing iPads for faculty and classroom use and identifying ways to better articulate our Catholic identity into our programs. With your help, we can raise the remaining $400,000 to fund the final priorities of our five-year plan by 2015.

In 2012-13 Blanchet established a new program called Blanchet BUDDIES (Building Unity Despite Differences in Every Student). These small advisory groups of ten students from all grade levels meet monthly with a faculty or staff member to discuss topics such as compassion, integrity or respect for the environment. The goal is to develop and assist students, faculty and staff to become a more unified community of faith and people of courage.

In September of 2012 the Blanchet community gathered in their BUDDIES groups and dedicated a full day to serving 21 local agencies through volunteer projects organized by HandsOn Willamette Valley. This force of 385 volunteers donated their day to completing a variety of tasks such as painting, cleaning, stocking food banks, weeding, planting and more. Among the agencies served were Queen of Peace and St. Edward churches, Salem/Keizer Head Start, Grant Community School, Northgate Peace and Forgiveness Garden, St. Francis Shelter, St. Barbara’s Cemetery and Tierra Rose Senior Living to name a few.

Outdoor SchoolIn September of 2012, Mrs. Ostby and her sixth grade class attended outdoor science school at Camp Westwind on the Oregon Coast. Students spent four days studying ecology, science, math and conservation of natural resources all while having fun and exploring the camp’s 508 acres of wild coastal land.

This is the first opportunity that Blanchet students have had to attend Outdoor School. The experience was met with great enthusiasm and will carry on as an annual sixth grade class trip.

Upon returning from Camp Westwind, students shared their comments:

“This camp was a fun way to get to know my classmates and to become better friends with them.” ~ Hailey Ostby

“At camp we got to hike, play on the beach, play in the estuary, meet new friends and find ourselves.” ~ Ada Martin

Student Center OpensOn November 16, 2012 the Blanchet community celebrated the completion of the school’s new 10,600 sq. ft. Student Center.

This $2 million project, which includes a new commercial kitchen, cafeteria, athletic locker rooms and landscaped courtyard, was fully funded through Blanchet’s comprehensive fundraising campaign, “Foundation for the Future.” The campaign officially kicked off in September of 2011 and has provided the resources to meet the priorities of the school’s Strategic Plan, “Vision 2015” which includes, among other goals, the construction of this new “heart of the campus.”

The Student Center is a bright and pleasant facility for students to enjoy daily and is an equally elegant and modern facility for hosting Blanchet’s many special events such as alumni reunions, Jazz Night and the Mid High Social (above).

The Blanchet community is tremendously grateful for the many dedicated supporters who provided for this vital expansion to campus.

Academic SuccessesBlanchet Catholic offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that prepares students to be successful in college and beyond. Students work and study hard and their efforts were recognized by the Blanchet community as well as by many local, state and even national agencies. Here are just a few highlights:

63% of the student body was recognized on the 2013 spring term honor roll ~ 170 students with a 3.5 - 3.99 GPA and 57 with a 4.0 GPA.

Fifty-five Blanchet juniors and seniors were members of the National Honor Society (‘12-’13).

Blanchet students consistently score higher on the SAT and ACT than their state and national counterparts.

During the 2012-13 season, Blanchet athletic teams were ranked six times in the top ten for team GPA including the girls soccer team who earned the second highest GPA in the state of Oregon (above).

Since 1998, twenty-five Blanchet students have been honored by the prestigious National Merit Scholarship organization including class of 2013 graduates Spencer Helterline and Kelsey Nanneman.

Celebrating TogetherStudents from the Salem area Catholic schools had the opportunity to celebrate Mass together on two occasions during the 2012-13 school year.

In January, they gathered to celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a regional All Schools Mass hosted by Regis High School (above). This very special Mass welcomed approximately 1,000 Catholic school students representing St. Paul, St. Luke, Sacred Heart, St. Vincent, Queen of Peace, St. Mary - Albany, St. Mary - Stayton, Blanchet and Regis schools. Mass, celebrated by Fr. John Amsberry, was followed by a Taiko (Japanese drums) performance.

A second All Schools Mass was held in May. Parish priests Fr. Joseph Heuberger, Fr. Timothy Mockaitis, Fr. Gary Zerr and Fr. Todd Molinari made possible this special celebration of Mass that brought together the nearly 700 students attending St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joseph, Queen of Peace and Blanchet Catholic schools.

Endowment GiftBlanchet Catholic School is proud to announce that it recently received a $1.1 million endowment gift. This is the largest endowment donation received in school history. The anonymous gift will benefit generations of students.

The Blanchet community is extraordinarily grateful for this incredibly generous gift that will help ensure that a Blanchet Catholic education will be available for many future generations of Mid Valley students. The earnings from this sizable gift will annually provide a number of scholarships for students who would otherwise be financially unable to attend our college preparatory school. The anonymous donor has witnessed Blanchet’s success story and is very proud of the hundreds of students who have graduated from Blanchet very well prepared for college and life beyond.

Board HonoredEach year the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Department of Boards and Councils of Catholic Education recognizes a few of the many outstanding boards, councils and commissions of Catholic education. Blanchet Catholic School is proud to announce that its board of directors was selected as a recipient of the NCEA 2013 Outstanding Board Award.

Blanchet operates with a 14 member Board of Directors. It is composed of professional representatives from a wide range of organizations: attorneys, businesses, public utility companies, local public school employees, architects, a representative from the local parishes, and a member of the school’s student council. Several members of the board are parents of either current students or of alumni. Three board members are part of the original group that petitioned the Archdiocese of Portland in 1995 to open the school in a city where two previous Catholic high schools had closed. The school leverages the experience of the board to create strategic planning documents that drive the school’s activities while remaining true to its mission of providing a quality Catholic college preparatory education to area youth.

Athletic SuccessesThe 2012-13 season took eleven Blanchet sports into OSAA State Championship competition. In the fall, cross country, boys soccer, volleyball and football saw playoff action. Caitlin Anglemier was named All-Mid Valley Player of the Year and head coach Sherrie Bashaw was PacWest Volleyball Coach of the Year. During the winter, the boys and girls swim teams saw state competition while the boys varsity basketball team earned the PacWest championship and went on to finish 2nd in state. Brent Counts was named PacWest Player of the Year and head coach Jon Tromblay was selected PacWest Basketball Coach of the Year. In spring, the varsity softball and track teams earned the PacWest championships and, along with baseball, went on to state competition. Sami Belleque was named PacWest Softball Player of the Year and head softball coach Jerry Orlando and head track coach Dave Mucken were selected as PacWest Coaches of the Year. The boys golf team were conference champs with Nic Ditzler named District Player of the Year and both the boys and girls teams competing at the state level. In tennis, Malvika Ramesh was the singles conference champion and went to the 2nd round at state. Finally, Sami Belleque and Trey Gianella were selected as Blanchet’s Athletes of the Year, Caitlin Anglemier and Brent Counts received the OSAA Award of Excellence and Sami Belleque was named SSBC Female Athlete of the Year.

June The Class of 2013The class of 2013, comprised of seventy outstanding seniors, received their diplomas during commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 8, 2013. Seniors in this remarkable class were accepted to 89 colleges and universities across the country and amassed over $6.2 million in scholarship offers.

The class of 2013 honored three valedictorians: Sami Belleque, Nicholas Ditzler and Kelsey Nanneman; and one salutatorian: Cassandra Farrell. Additionally, Spencer Helterline and Kelsey Nanneman were honored as Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Special recognition was also given to the recipients of the following prestigious awards:

Archbishop Blanchet SocietyThe Archbishop Blanchet Society is a giving society whose members contribute a minimum of $1,000 annually for at least five years. We

currently have over 40 members whose gifts help support our operating budget and allow us to provide tuition assistance to qualifying families. Over $250,000 is distributed annually to families who otherwise would not be able to send their children to Blanchet.

Foundation for the FutureIn 2011 Blanchet launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign called “Foundation for the Future.” The campaign’s goal is to provide funding to meet the greatest needs of our Strategic Five Year Plan which include: upgrading technology, providing for tuition assistance, enhancing the curriculum and building and renovating facilities.

The school’s major donors have already pledged over $4.2 million toward our $4.6 million goal.
