MIND MAP

Playing on the patterns of the sun and the moomn and how they coicide with eachother. PLay on circles and meerging techniques, to see if can recreate eclispse etc.

The term black hole can also realte to a place where money or lost items apparently disappear without trace. Vanish of the face of the earth, want to try an use digital collaging to create a sense of space.

Involing the moon , half moon, helps connect that link to space. Create a pattern or tevture that i can fill in , expand and work upon, to create the space astronomy link.

Using certain shapes, will later someones perception on that object, as they may already have preconcieved ideas. Shapes that connect with space are triangles and prisims.

Want to play on prisims and shapes, to create a sense of a black hole.

Creating circles and overlapping them using pathfinder to create some black hole sun effect, use this involved in the centre of the prisim.

Inspired by various album covers that of muse and pink floyd, as they both use alot of space style astronomy album art.

The colour yellow and balck relating to the sun and the connection between the eclipse, as thats what i think of when the term black hole sun is brought up.

Black hole is a term realting to astronomy. Its a region of space having a gravitational field so intense that no matter or radiation can escape.

INFLUENCES

Storm Thorgerson's has had a huge influence to play in the Album Art world. Desigining covers for Soundgarden to Pink Floyd. Very well respected at what he does, using symbolisim strongly to create a sense of mystrey throughout many of his pieces.

kubi Vasak. A digital collage based Album Art designer. Loved the style of work, very digitally based, yet has the authenticiy of a handmade piece. Clever use of textures and patterns throughout.

Matthew Cooper another digital collage artist and designer. showcases a variety of techniques , from collage and found imagery to painting and drawing, from photography to computer based work.

The unoffcial record cover for soundgaredens album single Black Hole Sun. This very simple yet effective cover, portrays what we percieve as a sun, yet everything else around it is so dark and univiting much like a black hole, the sun looks burnt and frazzled out. Quite a grungy cover, fitting of the music and the time of release.

They have used a similar pattern yet changed it to a bright white with a tinge of purple. The picture depicting a guy that is distressed about something, perhaps being stuck in a black hole. the sun repeats the line wont you come and take me away, realting to the image. San serif font bold and blocky, connecting into the grunge era of the music, fitting of the album cover.

IDEA ONE

First idea was to play on the term Black Hole Sun. Its a astrological happening, aswell as an informal term for losing things. Want to create a digital collage style album

cover. Using patterns and tetxtures that would be relate to the sun, moon, planets etc. Creating prisim style shapes, taking insiration from the above mentioned influences. Dont want the cover to be to overcrowded, keep it simple yet effective. Going to add detail to the back of the cover, could be matching with the inserts. Try and

create a sense that the prisim is the centre of the black hole sun , and the moon and sun are both disepearing into eachother, being merged into one, to create the Black

Hole Sun.

INFLUENCES

Taking influence from the album covers inspired by Storm Thorgerson’s, want to recreate this prisim. Create a feel of something rather than bouncing of the prisim, getting trapped inside it, but using the prisim to act as the black hole sun. His use of digital collage and design is inspirational, along with the other two influences, they are also well known for digitally createing collages, to a high standard.Taking a traditional skill, brining it into the twnthieth century, and doing it very well. The use of layering , clipping masks and the varying options of pathfinder, is how to recreate a digital collage, going to have to get to grips with every option of pathfinder, as there are several that can work together and create great outcomes, if if it wasnt intended, that the wonder of playing around, and displaying

this all using several artboards within the illustrator files. Going to display all the outcomes, fails and succsesses. Its ncie to be able to see whwre you started from and where you got to.Going to read into the moon and the sun and how they work together ad can merge them into the cnetre of the prisim for symoblisim, of teh black hole. yet want to make the sun a vivid yellow, but its not the best when printed out unless using a high quality pantone. Does seem to lose a the tone when using spot colours or RGB as apose to CYMK.Have attached the links in the next coloum, to the influences taht had discussed in the previous pages. Can then see whwre i got my inspirations from and how i developed that then into my own work, using new techniques and skills.

impression of a sun, rising, if i altered the colours, could give

a nice effect.

Turned the linea round using a difffernet swatch fill pattern, kept the pattern in the circle

behind the same throughout as it has a nice texture that of the

moon.

Just the singular moon texture here. Using the swatches

avalible. Prefer this one out of the textures, nice gradient, but overlaying it will help the lines stand out giving it more depth.

Could alter the stroke line.

Starting to create a digital collage using other shapes, keeping it in the dark greys and blacks, running with the

black hole sun theme, want to connect the colours.

Using the Merge on pathfinder tool was able to create half

patterns of the circles, meshing two textures together, half

sun half moon.

Decided to multiplie the circles make them smaller, keeping the line texture. Adding in the

triangle and altering the opacity still allows you to see the

pattern.

Creating more shapes, to add to the digital collage effect,

using the same patterns throughout. Making to cirlces

one the sun and one the moon, covering each other

up, moving the opacity down loses a sense of black hole.

Added a stroke line to the outside of the traingles, gives it more depth and stands out but then takes away from

the texture, Need to not have opacity.

Then layered the cirlces with alternate yellow and black ,

need to not have any opacity , feel it takes away from the

meaning.

Using the pathfinder tool, cut out the circles in the centre of the pattern, realised they are

oflined, going to have to adjust.

Get rid of the opacity, so the circles are a dense solid shape.

This was going to be the final cover, but decided to muck

about with pathfinder to create more shapes.

As stated decided to take the opacity to a 100 so the shapes

where back to there solid form. Did send them back,

so it would show the pattern throught both the yellow

circles.

Took away a layer of the texture behind to just have the

full triangle.

After using pathfinder it created these arrow shapes connected

them together to create the black hole, and put the solid

circles inside. Moved the other shapes to the back cover.

Added this onto a blakc circle, linking into the colour in the song.
