Granite surface plate has many advantages over cast iron surface plates: Twice as hard as cast iron. Minimal changes in dimension due to temperature changes. • Free from wringing, so there is no interruption of work. Dimensions • Trouble-free operation for use with magnetic materials. • Long life and rust-free, resulting in low maintenance costs. • Steel stands are optional. • Free from burrs or protrusions because of the fine grain structure and insignificant stickiness; this ensures a high degree of flatness over a long service life and causes no damage to other parts or instruments.

QUICK GUIDETO PRECISIONMEASUREMENT

Gauge Block Terminology

WRINGING(1) Decide on the combination of gauge blocks to be used while

keeping the following points in mind:a. Use as few gauge blocks as possible to obtain the required

dimension.b. Select thick gauge blocks whenever possible.c. Select gauge blocks starting with the one that has least

significant digit required, and then work up to ones withmore significant digits.

(2) Clean the gauge blocks with an appropriate cleaning agent.(3) Check the gauge blocks for burrs.

Use an optical flat to checkfor burrs, as follows:

a. Clean the measuring face.b. Gently bring the optical flat into contact with the measuring

face.c. Gently slide the optical flat on the measuring face and

interference fringes will appear.Check 1: If no interference fringes can be seen, a large burr

or dust may be contaminating the measuring face.

c. Wringing two thin gauge blocks:

To prevent the gauge blocksfrom bending, temporarilywring one of the thin gaugeblocks to a thick gauge blockthat will be used as a support.

Wring the other thin gaugeblock to the first block.

Remove the thick gauge block.

Heatsink

Irregularinterference fringes

Check the wringing condition with anoptical flat.

Bring the two measuring facesinto contact with each otherat right angles.

While applying a small amount ofpressure, gently turn one gaugeblock on the other. You will feelthe two blocks stick together.

Slide one gauge block overthe other so that the sides ofthe gauge blocks are flushwith each other.

a. Wringing two thick gauge blocks:

Place one end of the thingauge block onto one end ofthe thick gauge block.

While applying pressure evenly over the entire wringingsurface, slide the thin gauge block over the other untilthe two measuring faces coincide with each other.

b. Wringing a thin gauge block to a thick gauge block:

Wipe the measuring faces clean and thermally stabilizethe gauge blocks before measurement.

d. Gently press the optical flat against the measuring face andthe interference fringes will disappear.Check 2: If the interference fringes disappear, it

indicates that there is no burr present.Check 3: If the interference fringes remain partially, gently

move the optical flat to and fro. Then, if the fringesare seen in the same location on the measuringface, there is a burr on the gauge block surface; ifthe fringes remain in the same location on theoptical flat, there is a burr on the optical flat.

e. Remove burrs, if any, from the measuring face.(See page 273.)

(4) Apply a very small amount of oil to the measuringface and spread it evenly over the entire surface.Wipe the film of oil from the surface.• Grease, spindle oil, or Vaseline is normally applied.

(5) Gently bring the two measuring faces into contact using one ofthe following methods, depending on the sizes of the gaugeblocks to be wrung together.
