TO BE SURE YOU HAVE A GREAT CANDIDATE—CHECK REFERENCES!!! Do you have a new hire that is failing…and then you discovered your poor hire also was a “loser” with his/her last few employers? Why reference checks fail: • Many organizations still fail to do ANY reference checking!! • Some only check reference offered by the candidate and fail to verify the

reference relationship A good reference check is difficult to conduct! Fear of litigation keeps many from divulging important information. What can you do? • Have candidates complete an authorization form that waives any claims based

on reference checks • Dig—go beyond the references provided: research and call others who worked

with or supervised candidates • Talk to co-workers or vendors! They worked with candidates daily and usually

had more exposure than managers/supervisors • Offer to contact former managers after hours—they may be more open and

less inhibited • If it is a senior role you are filling, have a senior executive make the call—most

executives will talk to other executives Social media? A dilemma—researching a candidate’s online presence can open you up to chargers of discrimination—check with your attorney before you do!
