One of our Area Managers will be happy to attend to discuss the positioning and configuration (ducted or recirculating) of your Biological Safety Cabinet, paying full regard to BS 5726 (1992), parts 2 and 4 and the Advisory Committee for Dangerous Pathogens guidelines. Failure to do this may mean that the cabinet will not be able to comply with the British Standards, and the cost of alterations at the time of installation and commissioning may exceed the cost of the original cabinet. If you are planning a new building or laboratory refurbishment, our Technical Office will be happy to liaise with architects, builders or M&E contractors to ensure the correct fan ductwork and other site services are installed, and that sufficient make-up air has been allowed for in the room ventilation design. Configuration Cabinets can either be ducted to atmosphere, venting outside the building, or they can be recirculating, i.e. exhausting back into the laboratory through a double exhaust HEPA filter with no ductwork requirement. Factors to Consider 1. Siting Please ensure sufficient height from bench/floor to ceiling is available. Where height is restricted, a low- level option may be available. Please contact our Technical Office for further details. The positioning of a Safety Cabinet is extremely important as its performance can be affected by its proximity to the following: air conditioning units, ventilation ducts, doors, other safety cabinets, walls, other equipment or windows. Please contact our Technical Office for a FREE site survey. 2. Formalin Fumigation BS 5726-4 (1992) advises that cabinets are decontaminated by formalin fumigation every six months and/or prior to a service visit. Some customers prefer to fumigate on a more frequent basis. Great care has to be taken to ensure formalin is eliminated and disposed of in a safe manner. This is not a problem for ducted cabinets (assuming that your ductwork does not vent out onto a public walkway). However, for those requiring recirculating cabinets, there are several options available; Flexible ductwork Sometimes called ‘elephant trunking’, this length of ducting can be attached to the spigot of a recirculating cabinet and vented into a fume cupboard or out of a window. Mobile formalin evacuation unit This is a carbon filter on wheels that can be used when there is no provision to exhaust formalin on existing cabinets. The ‘formalin scrubber’ is therefore a useful item to have in a department, as it can be attached to any recirculating cabinet by the flexible ductwork supplied with the machine. Other methods Different manufacturers recommend and supply alternatives to the above. Scrubber units which fit on top of (or under) the Safety Cabinet and contain activated charcoal are alternatives to the mobile scrubber unit. Hydrogen Peroxide is a newer, viable alternative to the use of formalin. See pages 145 to 146. For advice on the best method for your laboratory please contact our Technical Office on 01342 826836.

Biological Safety CabinetsAll Biological Safety Cabinets purchased for use in the UK should comply with BS EN 12469:2000. TheBritish Standards BS 5726-2 (1992) and BS 5726-4 (1992) give guidelines for siting, installation, commis-sioning and the use of cabinets. Our responsibilities as a supplier of safety cabinets are also detailed in BS5726 (1992), parts 2 and 4.

We, therefore, strongly recommend that, following consultation with your site safety officer and/orbiological safety officer, you contact our Technical Office on 01342 826836 to arrange a FREE site surveyprior to quotation. One of our Area Managers will be happy to attend to discuss the positioning andconfiguration (ducted or recirculating) of your Biological Safety Cabinet, paying full regard to BS 5726(1992), parts 2 and 4 and the Advisory Committee for Dangerous Pathogens guidelines. Failure to do thismay mean that the cabinet will not be able to comply with the British Standards, and the cost ofalterations at the time of installation and commissioning may exceed the cost of the original cabinet.

If you are planning a new building or laboratory refurbishment, our Technical Office will be happy toliaise with architects, builders or M&E contractors to ensure the correct fan ductwork and other siteservices are installed, and that sufficient make-up air has been allowed for in the room ventilation design.

Types of Safety Cabinet Class I - operator protection ONLYClass II - operator and product protection Class III - operator and product protection for group 4 pathogens

Note; vertical and horizontal laminar flow cabinets are for product protection only, and are, therefore, not classified asbiological safety cabinets. Please see pages 558 to 562 for details.

ConfigurationCabinets can either be ducted to atmosphere, venting outside the building, or they can be recirculating, i.e.exhausting back into the laboratory through a double exhaust HEPA filter with no ductwork requirement.

Factors to Consider1. SitingPlease ensure sufficient height from bench/floor to ceiling is available. Where height is restricted, a low-level option may be available. Please contact our Technical Office for further details. The positioning ofa Safety Cabinet is extremely important as its performance can be affected by its proximity to thefollowing: air conditioning units, ventilation ducts, doors, other safety cabinets, walls, other equipmentor windows. Please contact our Technical Office for a FREE site survey.

2. Formalin FumigationBS 5726-4 (1992) advises that cabinets are decontaminated by formalin fumigation every six monthsand/or prior to a service visit. Some customers prefer to fumigate on a more frequent basis. Great carehas to be taken to ensure formalin is eliminated and disposed of in a safe manner. This is not a problemfor ducted cabinets (assuming that your ductwork does not vent out onto a public walkway). However,for those requiring recirculating cabinets, there are several options available;

Flexible ductwork Sometimes called ‘elephant trunking’, this length of ducting can be attached to the spigot of a recirculatingcabinet and vented into a fume cupboard or out of a window.

Mobile formalin evacuation unit This is a carbon filter on wheels that can be used when there is no provision to exhaust formalin onexisting cabinets. The ‘formalin scrubber’ is therefore a useful item to have in a department, as it canbe attached to any recirculating cabinet by the flexible ductwork supplied with the machine.

Other methodsDifferent manufacturers recommend and supply alternatives to the above. Scrubber units which fit ontop of (or under) the Safety Cabinet and contain activated charcoal are alternatives to the mobilescrubber unit. Hydrogen Peroxide is a newer, viable alternative to the use of formalin. See pages 145 to146. For advice on the best method for your laboratory please contact our Technical Office on 01342 826836.

Formalin Vapouriser/NeutraliserThis instrument has been designed to allow the fumigation/sterilisation in the Microbiological SafetyCabinets according to Annex J to the EN 12469 European standard.

■ Large capacity: ensures the correct fumigation for all models of Faster’s cabinets (a concentrationof 50mg/m3 formaldehyde is obtained by mixing 60ml formalin with 60ml water per each cubicmetre to be sterilised - full instructions and precise amounts are in the instruction manual).

■ Fully automatic procedure: the process is activated by pressing the key on the control panel andthe rest of the process takes place without any further intervention from the operator up to theend of the full cycle.

■ Safety: the chemical that neutralises the formaldehyde (ammonium bicarbonate) eliminates theformalin vapour with no ammonia residue. In the event of a power-out during the sterilisationcycle, the procedure will be completed correctly when the electric power is restored.

OperationThe formalin vapouriser consists of two containers. The first one contains a solution of 50% formalinand 50% distilled water and the second one contains a solution (e.g. ammonium bicarbonate) suitableto neutralise the formaldehyde vapours generated during the sterilisation process. Full instructions andcorrect volumes are given for each size of cabinet.

The device is fitted with a series of lights to highlight the various stages of sterilisation process.

566-160ABS Class II Biological Safety Cabinets The Microflow range of Class II cabinets is designed to provide operator and product protection inaccordance with BS EN 12469.

The cabinets work on a recirculating principle with approximately 70% of the air drawn from theworking area being recirculated. Air then passes through the main HEPA filter mounted in the roof of thecabinet at a velocity in the region of 0.4m/sec. The unit is self balancing, drawing its make up air throughthe open front and then discharging through a high efficiency exhaust HEPA filter.

Cabinets can be ducted to the outside or operate in a recirculating mode. Recirculating models can havean optional carbon filter (option K) fitted for safe fumigation when using formalin. See page 142 fordetails on configuration options.

The Microflow ABS Class II safety cabinet has a unique combined sliding/hinged door mechanism. Thisoperates as a sliding front which can be fully closed to provide 100% protection during formalinfumigation without the need to tape the opening. The front door is also hinged to allow easy access tothe work area and services for loading and cleaning respectively.

■ Operator and product protection to BS EN 12469■ Continuous monitoring of cabinet status ■ Easy access, unique sliding/hinged door ■ Safety alarms for filter, airflow and window open ■ Microprocessor controlled ■ Automatic formalin sterilisation ■ Double exhaust HEPA filters for recirculating models ■ Solid stainless steel work surface ■ Services accessible from the front

ABS Class II Biological Safety Cabinets, continued…

Class II Cabinet ConfigurationsRecirculating - Option F This cabinet exhausts into the laboratory. It is therefore necessary to have a double HEPA filter on theexhaust. If this is your chosen option, it is necessary to decide how the formalin vapour will be disposedof, following fumigation (unless you are decontaminating with Hydrogen Peroxide).

Recirculating with carbon filter - Option K This non-ducted, recirculating cabinet is designed for situations where there is no means of disposing offormalin following decontamination. This option is not required if you are decontaminating withHydrogen Peroxide.

Ducted <2m - Option D This cabinet exhausts via a length of ductwork which must be less than 2 metres in length. Normally, the ductwork runs to an exterior wall or window. It is therefore necessary to ensure that there is no riskof exposure to any passers-by, adjacent wards or laboratories.

Note; a ductwork run of <2 metres terminates in a high-velocity discharge spout as standard. If yoursituation demands a cowl (chinaman’s hat), there will be an added cost.

Please note that the cost indicated below does not include fitting, nor does it include any costs forbuilding work (e.g. making a hole in the wall or window). The cost for fitting will be included in aquotation following a detailed site survey. To arrange for a site survey and for advice on siting pleasecontact our Technical Office on 01342 826836.

Ducted >2m - Option C Where long distances over 2 metres are required, an option C cabinet should be selected. Please notethat a remote fan on top of the roof would also be required. If an outside contractor is to supply the fanand ductwork, it is imperative that they contact the Jencons-PLS Technical Office on 01342 826836, forthe appropriate specifications.

EBDS - Equipment Bio-Decontamination ServiceEBDS is a unique service from BIOQUELL usingthird generation hydrogen peroxide vapourtechnology to bio-decontaminate laboratoryequipment - including CO2 incubators and ClassII cabinets. One advantage of EBDS is that theuser does not have to decontaminate theequipment prior to an engineer’s visit. BIOQUELL’sservice engineers carry out the EBDS and thenservice the equipment.

EBDS uses BIOQUELL’s unique low temperature,residue-free hydrogen peroxide vapourtechnology to bio-decontaminate a broad rangeof laboratory equipment including:

■ Biological safety cabinets■ Other HEPA filtration enclosures■ CO2 incubators■ Incubators■ Centrifuges■ Robotic equipment■ Other laboratory equipment

Hydrogen Peroxide has proven efficacy against:

■ Bacterial spores (e.g. Geobacillus stearother-mophilus, Anthrax)

■ Bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas,Mycoplasma)

■ Viruses (e.g. Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Poliovirus)■ Fungi (e.g. Aspergillus, Candida, Penicillium)

BIOQUELL also provides a Room Bio-Decontamination Service (RBDS) using itsunique hydrogen peroxide vapour technology(see page 146).

Key advantages of EBDSHealth & Safety■ Eradicate the use and handling of formaldehyde in the laboratory (by laboratory staff, engineers

or others)■ EBDS technology holds the equipment at negative pressure ensuring that the vapour cannot leak

into the laboratory■ Hydrogen peroxide is converted to water and oxygen at the end of the process – hence no

residues to affect research or employees

Efficiency■ No need to close the laboratory or decontaminate overnight – EBDS can take place whilst work

in the laboratory continues■ Significantly faster bio-decontamination cycles than using formaldehyde■ Excellent efficacy against a range of bacteria (including spores), viruses and fungi

Material compatibility■ First rate material compatibility characteristics – no damage to electronics or other sensitive

equipment■ Over 860 gassing cycles repeated back to back on a biological safety cabinet resulted in

zero defects

Cost savings■ The efficiency, benefits and Health & Safety advantages represent tangible cost savings

Room Bio-DecontaminationService (RBDS)Hydrogen peroxide bio-decontamination can beused in laboratories and other rooms in thehealthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, foodand biomedical sectors.

Dealing with contaminated rooms has alwaysbeen difficult - safety and efficacy seemed topresent conflicting demands. Hydrogen peroxidevapour has been used extensively in the pharma-ceutical industry for many years, as the vapour iscompatible with most materials includingelectronics and has been proven to be highlyeffective - particularly against bacterialendospores.

Once the bio-decontamination process iscomplete, the vapour can be broken down tooxygen and water leaving no other residues.

BIOQUELL’s Room Bio-Decontamination Service(RBDS) offers these benefits to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, biomedical, healthcare, food andenvironmental applications. This unique offeringprovides a scheduled or emergency servicewherever bio-burden is suspected or needs to bede-activated.

High-level verification is assured as each cycle ischallenged with 6-log Geobacillus stearother-mophilus biological indicators, the same used tovalidate steam steriliser decontamination cycles.

Having proven efficacy against bacteria, virus, fungus and moulds, Hydrogen peroxide vapour isfast becoming the safer alternative method ofbio-decontamination, as opposed to traditionalmethods such as formaldehyde - which is aknown human carcinogen.

BIOQUELL’s Hydrogen peroxide technology offers:

■ Residue free, non carcinogenic and infinitely scalable

■ Fully validatable 6-log bio-reduction■ Excellent material compatability and

minimal down-time■ Consultancy and validation■ Room bio-decontamination service,

patented technology
