INTRODUCTIONBiodiesel production from biomass is now considered to be the most recent, challenging and interesting field for Researchers .
THREE GENERATION OF BIO - FUELS –
1. The first generation of biomass was using groundnut, cottonseeds, rise brans, coconut , mustard, palm etc. for the production of biodiesel.
2. The second generation of biomass contains jojoba, mahuva , karanj , Jetropha, kokum, castor been, neem etc. as a raw material for the production of biodiesel for production of power or to run vehicles.
3. Biodiesel from algae is the most promising renewable fuel derived from biomass.

VARIOUS OIL CROPS
ADVANTAGES OF ALGAE AS FUEL1. Algae are considered to be a very efficient biological system for
harvesting solar energy for the production of organic compounds.2. Algae are non-vascular plants, lacking (usually) complex
reproductive organs.3. Many species of algae can be induced to produce particularly high
concentrations of chosen, commercially valuable compounds, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and pigments.
4. Algae are microorganisms that undergo a simple cell division cycle.5. The farming of microalgae can be grown using sea or brackish
water.6. Algal biomass production systems can easily be adapted to various
levels of operational or technological skills

INDIAN CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS ALGAL BIO-FUELS RESEARCH1. Extensive work has been done by Indian
scientists’ on utilization of sea weeds for food and pharmaceutical applications. In India, sea weeds collected from natural vegetation are used for the production of phycocolloids such as agarandalginates.
2. CSMCRI, Bhavnagar, has long been working on the cultivation of various sea weeds and recently forayed into value addition for sea weed products. Sea weeds like Gracilaria, Gelidium, and Kappaphycus etc. are being cultivated in large scale.
3. CSMCRI, Bhavnagar for the first time in India has been able to produce ethanol using a sea weed polysaccharide.
4. Rengasamy and his team have successfully developed a technology to produce biogas from weeds.
ALGAE AS FUEL IN INDIAN SCENARIO
INDIAN CAPABILITIES1) Valuable culture collection of algae isolated from a
variety of ecological habitats2) Robust species of algae isolated from hostile
environments including industrial wastes, wastewaters etc. –heterotrophic capabilities and ability to adapt to various environmental conditions
3) Characterization of bio-fuel capabilities at the lab level
4) Open raceway pond cultivation a. Optimization of nutrient inputs and harvesting schedule b. Control of contamination5) Harvesting a. Auto flocculation b. Chemical flocculation (PHYCOFLOC)6) Seaweed cultivation and procession
