With the activities starting in 2009 , this project complements the activiites alrealy being developed in HarvestPlus e AgroSalud, helping to strengh the Brazilian Biofortification Network , being sponsored by Fundo de Pesquisa Embrapa / Monsanto ( Embrapa and Monsanto Research Fund) .

To develop biofortified crops and evaluate its acceptability by target group.

To breed for high pro - vitamin A varieties of pumpkin, sweet potato, cassava and maize.

To breed for high Fe and Zn contents cultivars/ varieties of rice, beans, cowpea beans , maize and wheat.

To develop food products and packing that are in accordance with the target group eating and dietary habits.

To evaluate the potential of the utilization of the biofortified food in the school lunch program of the Maranhão, Sergipe and Minas Gerais States ;

To develop communication , diffusion and technology transfer actions in order to guarantee visibility for the project among the stake holders

The food basket approach for LAC

• In LAC several people are reached via supplementation and fortification;

• We want to reach rural poor with biofortified versions of these crops, since rural poor may not have access to supplements and fortified food;

• Processed products made of these crops that could claim that they are source of Fe, Zn or provitamin A, according to the labeling guidelines of the target countries.

• Pilot studies (2008 -2011) in 4 states: Maranhao, Sergipe, Minas Geraes and Rio de Janeiro

• Task I - Nutrition ( 2 activities)

• 1: baseline on health and nutrition status of target population, identification of food habits and consumption.

• 2: acceptability test of the 6 crops in the school lunch program.

• Task II - Production

• Validation of the cultivars and production of the food ( grains and tubers ) at the municipalities.

• Release of 10 cultivars with high Fe, Zn and Beta Carotene that are being disseminated.

Biofortification Projects in Brazil: BioFORT, HarvestPlus and AgroSalud, coordinated in Brazil by Embrapa, since 2003. It aims to develop micronutrient dense staple crops, to achieve provitamin A, iron, and zinc concentrations that can have measurable effects on nutritional status.

How are countries prioritized?

To be a H+ priority, a country must: 1. Produce the crop - a significant proportion of production

must be used for domestic consumption;

2. Consume much of the crop on a per-capita basis; and

3. Have a high level of micronutrient deficiency (vitamin A, Iron or zinc).

5 Takeover messages

1) Biofortification is a strategy for combatting micronutrient deficiency

in LAC, especially in rural areas

2) Due to the diverse diets in LAC we are advocating "food basket"

approach

3) We have been functioning in LAC for a while, with great successes

in breeding and also in raising awareness and building

partnerships in research in the public and private sectors

4) Special emphasis to the development of healthy processed

products

5) In phase III of Harvestplus (2014-2018) we want to increase our

investments in LAC

The results presented here are a consequence of a team work strategy which integrated more than 200 people in different regions of Brazil and LAC, working tightly in order to reach the HarvestPlus , A4NH and BioFORT expected deliverables.
