Biodiversity

A matter of law :In France, Protecting biodiversity is part

of a law. The text was adopted by the National Assembly (elected by the

people) on March 18th, 2016. It still has to be voted by the Senate but everyone is hopeful that it will be definitely voted

and adopted this summer. The elaboration started in 2014.

Everyone agrees that Biodiversity is threatened :

•1 mammal out of 4,•1 bird out of 8,•1 amphibian out of 3 ….Are threatened to become extinct in 2016.

Scientists reckon that up to half of the living species could have dissapeared in a

century’s time, if we do not act. That is 100 to 1000 times faster than in a natural cycle.

What is the law about?

It aims at reconquering biodiversity, nature and landscapes.

It aims at protecting, enhancing Biodiversity.

Biodiversity is at the heart of it. Biodiversity is :• A source of innovation,• A means to fight against climate

changes,• A basic and crucial element of our

natural heritage.

Biodiversity : a definition•Biodiversity is the extreme complexity

and richness dealing with living beings and ecosytems.

…animals, plants, bacterias, wild and domestic genes,…

* Biodiversity deals with the interactions, the entanglement existing bewteen the different organisms, between the organisms and the place they live in.

Humans are only a part of a large whole.

France offers a diversity of landscapes

Species in Burgundy

Burgundian species are classified in 6 different groups :

• Insectivores• Bats• Carnivores• Rodents• Lagomorphs ( hares and rabbits)• Even-toed ungulate or Artiodactyles

(deers, boars, …)

Murin de Bechstein en hibernation

There are 23 different species of bats in Burgundy ( out of

35 in France and 45 in Europe). These small furry

mammals eat insects.

In Autumn, people go to the forests to listen to the squall of the deer.

Wild boarOn the photo, you can see squeakers. There are large families of wild boars in the

natural park behind our school.

They usually are noctural animals.They live in mixed forests. They are omnivores.

They play an important part keeping the ground sound.

Stone Marten (Martes foina)

They live in various places : old walls, trees, attics, …You can see them at night in the streets in Dijon, if you’re lucky!

They eat berries, eggs, small birds, insects, rats and mice.

Peregrine falcon

Powerful and fast, this bird can fly as fast as 200 km/hour when diving.

They reproduce in the cliffs nearby Dijon.

They are predators; they help the city keeping the numbers of pigeons down.

Plants

There are beautiful trees.

Rameau acts :

We planted shrubs and seeds to attract bees and butterflies.

• New and larger compost boxes were settled.• Sorting out food at the school restaurant is on

its way now. …and feeds the compost boxes. • We try to buy local products for the school

restaurant.• We are having a big « transport Day » on June 2nd

to promote clean and healthy means of transport. • We go on trips to the parks with natural guides :

we protect better when we know better! • A beekeeper is visiting us and he’ll decide where

to put the bee hives. Our flowers and trees will be for them. We also count bees.

• We are learning abour animals who live around us and we shall build hedgehog houses.

• We built and settled insects hotels.

•We took plants home to feed bees and butterflies.

•We walk more to school.•We also learn that biodiversity starts in the bushes around the school.

•We’ll celebrate biodiversity on June 2nd.
