The Commerzbank head-office building adds an impressive feature to Frankfurt’s skyline.

On the first floor, a generous PLAZA with an integrated restaurant. Above the lobby leading off the PLAZA, an atrium allowing daylight to penetrate rises through all the floors, creating a bright, friendly atmosphere.

The nine sky gardens – the building’s “green lungs” – can be used by employees as communication and recreation areas.

The central core that is usual in high-rise buildings was replaced by a 160 m-high atrium and the technical risers were accommodated in the three corners of the building.

There are 16 elevators at the corners each one can carry 1600 kg. In the south core exists an outside glass elevator.

The winter garden spaces provide amuch more green, natural space for those working in the building which is something lacking in the typical urban work environment.

Planning in response to climate:Passive design strategies help in ensuring that visual and thermal comfort is maintained within the building with minimum interventions of technoLogies.

The orientation of blocks is such that the majority of building faCades face North, South, North-West and South-East. This enables adequate day lighting and glare control, Glazing on the first and second flOors has been shaded From direct solar radiation using louvres. These also act as important design elements of the building and give it a visual identity.

The Menara Mesiniaga is the headquarters for IBM in Subang Jaya near Kuala Lumpur. It was first conceived of in 1989 and finally completed in 1992.

The building is an environmental filter, an analogy for synthesis and analysis. The Menara Mesiniaga is a built work that utilizes a basis of traditional Malaysian building models and their transition or evolution into modern principles. It is Yeang’s vision of the tropical garden city and it uncovers “the relationship of buildings, landscape and climate . . .” transforming the impact of highrise development in the ecosystem of a city.

The building is equipped with 1. 6- classrooms, a demo center, 2. a 130-seat auditorium, lounge, 3. cafeteria, and 4. prayer rooms.

- Sky gardens that serve as villages- Spiraling vertical landscape- Recessed and shaded windows on the East and West- Curtain wall glazing on the North and South- Single core service on hot side - East- Naturally ventilated and sunlit toilets, stairways and lift lobbies- Spiral balconies on the exterior walls with full height sliding doors to interior offices.
