STUDENT

NTU

Student enters NTU as a freshman.Is presented with a matriculation card.Name of bike-share scheme?Logo

Page 2: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

Student sees others cycling around schoolFirst questions:Do I need to pay? Will I use it?Where do I get a bike from?Where can I ride it to?For how long can I use the bicycle? Is it convenient? Is it safe?

Page 3: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

Where do I get a bike

from? From all bus stops(alternative to public transport)+ behind North and South Spine? (or other spots along Nanyang Avenue, not served by buses, high human traffic)

Page 4: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-For short trips around school opposing the flow of public/shuttle bus-For short trips around school regardless of public/shuttle bus as you just need to get somewhere FAST w/o waiting, buses are too crowded-Bicycle is FREE to use-Good way to chill out with friends/hall mates-No, too hot and strenuous-No, unsafe

Will I use it?Sometimes student has to consider the option of taking the public/shuttle bus or bicycle.Bus stops: Information available to evaluate arrival times of buses, or rent a bicycle. (But how reliable is this information? Is it necessary?)

Page 5: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-Encourage frequent changeovers so that more people have access to the bicycles-Prevent single users from hogging the bicycles somehow

For how long can I use it?

Page 6: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-Are the bicycles well-maintained?-Riding with other motorised traffic-Lack of sufficient riding space/no leeway-Confusion on how to ride on the road (follow traffic rules?)-Other motorised vehicles ignore/underestimate speed of cyclists/do not know what to expect from cyclists

Is it safe?Improve clarity on road use, improve the poor communication between road users. (Mainly through education?)

Page 7: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-It’s too hot/strenuous-It might get my clothes dirty-I’ll be perspiring by the time I get to my destination-How do I carry my bag while I ride?-Easy to take bike out/return it-Is the station near my destination?-What if I face a problem in the midst of my use of the bike?

How to make it more convenient?

Showers/freshen-up” areas

Panniers to carry folders, grocery bags, small bags, big bags? Waterproof, covered

Roleplay simulation of individual situations in a poster

-Within school-To Pioneer MRT-To Jurong Point-Bus stop just outside school-Anywhere else, within the loan period. i.e. -Neighbourhood hardware shop

-Supper places-Parks

Where can I ride it to?

System can be extended into the near immediate neighbourhood. Within certain extents.

Page 9: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-Locate the nearest station-Obtain a bicycle that is safe-What to do if you notice a bike in need of repairObtain bicycle using a key/card-Put belongings in the bag/basket-Mount the bike comfortably-Clothes are out of the way of the wheels etc.-What to do if bicycle tire puntures in the midst of the journey-What if it starts to rain?-Arrive at a hill – difficult to cycle up-Seat is too low (how many people actually adjust the seat height?)-Pedalling is uncomfortable due to unsuitable seat height-Riding on wet ground-Arrive at destination, but can you go directly to your destination or do you have to actually cycle to the nearest station and then walk to your destination?-You’re almost late for class. But there are no more parking spots at the nearest station!-How far is it from your classroom?-How to park the bicycle? Need to use key or tap card again? Or no need? Do I need to lock it physically to the station?-Any charges incurred in total?-Can I report any feedback?-Can I report any problems?-Is the exchange confusing? Lights blinking here and there. Unclear.-Is the parking space cramped?-What if there is a machine/software failure?-Can I take a shower/freshen up before heading to my destination?

SCENARIO 1: Within school

Page 10: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

SCENARIO 2: To Pioneer MRT/Jurong Point

-How great is the demand to cycle to Pioneer MRT and to Jurong Point respectively?

-Is some kind of special locking facility/protection for bikes needed now that they are out of the campus?- Is a camera pointed at the bicycle parking area enough of a deterrent to bike thiefs?-Possible to obtain a parking space just under the MRT station?(just outside the shopping centre?)-Is the parking space exclusive to the NTU-bike-share bicycles, or can it be shared with other cyclists as a common facility?

Page 11: Bike Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

-I lock the bike to existing structures (bicycle racks, rails, fences etc.)-How do I lock it in an easy but secure manner?-How can I be sure that the bicycle is safe while I go shopping/go do my errands etc.?-What happens if my bicycle gets stolen?-What happens if the bicycle tire gets punctured?

SCENARIO 3: To any other place

-Bicycle design -borrow frame and some features from established bike share programs based on some criteria:

-basic features, -sturdiness, -aesthetic appeal

-Locking/Parking/Stations (electronic? Physical? Shared facilities with other bicycle users? Issue of redistribution of bicycles)(Do stations shelter the bike from rain/sun?)(Are the locking/interface aspects in-built into the bicycles, or built into the parking stations?)-These are some options available right now:

-Identity of bicycles: Advertising and communicating the various schools’ activities and events within NTU and to the community-Colorful, appealing

Details

Student/student clubs/schools etc. can “adopt-a-bike”
