BACKGROUND OF BBBSO

“Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa (BBBSO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a one-to-one mentoring experience for children and youth in the National Capital Region.” (2008 Big Wrap Up)

“Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa has been creating Big Brother friendships since 1970and Big Sister friendships since 1973.”(www.bbbso.ca)

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The agency had to turn away new volunteers due to lack of funding.

There is a common misconception that BBBSO requires volunteers, when in actual fact they have plenty of volunteers but not enough funding to expand their programs to support more “Bigs and Littles”.

MAIN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Provide door prizes for the 40th Anniversary Event

Fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa Raising awareness in the community

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Divide students into sub-groups according to particular events

Set dates for malls, college, and Chapters Collect donated items for draw and silent

auction from local businesses Have all students bring in baked goods for bake

sale Delegate additional duties

INVOLVEMENT

All students have been required to solicit for donations

All students are also required to bring a minimum of one tray or “batch” of baked goods for the bake sale

All students must participate in the setup, duration, or closing of an event.

All students are encouraged to distribute invitations for the Chapters Event to family and/or friends.

ISSUES/CHALLENGES

Getting businesses to donate items for the draw and silent auction

Finding a way for everyone to bring baked goods to the school on time

Organizing meetings and delegating duties Setting up event dates at specified locations

DOOR PRIZES INITIATIVE

Obtain gift cards and certificates from local businesses as door prizes for the 40th Anniversary Event.

Algonquin College on March 25, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Desserts supplied from each student

Music will be played to attract students

Draw from Bayshore Mall (carry-over).

locally donated items will take place at St. Laurent Shopping Centre on

March 27, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Givenchy Perfume Set Two Tickets to a show at

National Arts Centre 6 passes to the Canadian

War Museum

A draw for locally donated prizes took place at Bayshore Shopping Centre on March 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. a Smashbox gift basket valued at $475.00, Ticket for 2 adults to the Lafleche Arial Park 5 group passes (of 5 people each) for Marked Paintball

valued at $350 each Includes: rentals and paintballs

4 passes for Cosmic Adventures Gift certificates

An invitation fundraiser event will take place at Chapter’s Pinecrest location

March 31, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

10% of sales that evening donated to all organizations partnered with Algonquin CYW students, including BBBSO
