Sometimes, fashion just needs to hap-pen without too much thought oreffort. Introducing California nativedesigner, Amber Sakai and her ready-to-wear (make that easy-to-wear) col-lections.

Amber has sported many hats in thefashion arena. A former model, stylist, intimateapparel co-designer of Brighdie Lingerie and co-founder of Four Girls (patented wetsuits for femalesurfers), her latest venture is a clothing line bearingher namesake that adds a playful and feminine spinto the eco-chic market, designed with real womenin mind. “My body makeup does not fit into Prada. My arm could fit into the leg hole,” jokes Sakai, who stands six feet tall with an enviable lean andathletic frame. "Whether you’re large-busted, havea flat tush, or a long torso, my pieces are going toenhance the best part of you.”

The Amber Sakai brand, much like the designerherself, pairs a love of effortless convenience withan appetite for high-minded luxury. Her collections(all refreshingly made right here in Los Angeles) areminimal, edgy and sensual, and constructed insuper soft organic textiles that can be worn alone orlayered in dramatically feminine silhouettes. Thedesigner takes a couture approach to what she con-siders "everyday pieces," paying close attention toall aspects of the female form and utilizing herextensive talent of design and patternmaking, todrape and embellish and accentuate a woman’s bestassets. There is a no-nonsense theme in the aesthet-ic that speaks to the confident, fashionable and eco-conscious woman, whether she be a working pro-fessional, mother, wife, or traveler. Women whodon’t have the time or the inclination for complicat-ed or uncomfortable clothing wear her pieces.

Amber’s “Weekend” line (available in September)features a collection of easy-care pieces at afford-able prices and epitomizes good value for terrificstyle. They’re ideal for the woman on the go; a per-fect ensemble for a carry-on wardrobe, ensuring itswearer arrives effortlessly intact and pulled togetherat her final destination. It's the classic tunic, thewell worn tee-shirt, the vampy draped top and thefavorite cropped pant all rolled into one beautifuland obliging bank of wardrobe staples. Amber Sakai redefines elegant simplicity for today'sconsciously modern (and busy) LA Woman.

Now available at “Church”, 7277 Santa MonicaBoulevard, West Hollywood (323) 876 8887.

It isn't a mystery where GRETA, the high-end Beverly Hills ladies boutique draws its inspirationfrom. It's the owner herself; Greta Feigler. Simply put, the immaculately attired, classicallyadorned, charming sophisticate is a genuine, original “class act”. The elegant and expansivestore provides the perfect setting for a gorgeous and eclectic array of day and evening-wear thatliterally sparkles. A quick, yet impressive scan of the labels - Sachin & Babi, VivienneWestwood, Zanella, Majestic, David Galan and Dressed To Kill, to name a few, headline fromthe rails, in addition to Greta's private label Greta Couture Collection; a collaboration withAlvaro Umana of James Galanos fame.

“What a lovely place”, I effuse after Greta greets me with a rare and old fashioned warmththat makes me feel like we're old friends. “Oh, it keeps me out of trouble” she chuckles. As Ilearn later in our chat, that's quite the understatement. Greta opened her Beverly Drive store inthe 1950’s and has walked to work every day since. She came to California with her husband, fell in love with Beverly Hills and never strayed. “Is your husband still alive”? I enquire. “No,but I have a boyfriend of 37 years” she smiles a little wickedly.

GRETA recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary with much fanfare (this is a lady who loves tohost a party) and we chat about the comings and goings she’s seen over the past half-decade in the world of fashion and one of the worlds’ iconic fash-ion cities; Beverly Hills. She talks with fondness about her inspirations and love of Italian couture, her idol Gianni Versace and her favorite designers;Armani, Valentino and Vivienne Westwood. “Also my mother" Greta adds. "My mother dressed simply, and understated, but was always chic. She wasa mainstay in the store, the shop mascot”.

After reminiscing about the past, our conversation turns to the future. “What’s next”? I ask, expecting a blow-out retirement party somewhere in herresponse. Her eyes light up and she excitedly shares plans that are underway to open a new “store within a store”. Using her keen eye for the unusualand beautiful, Greta and her co-pilot of 30 years; Iris, are launching “Melange” during the fall of 2011. A collection of antiques, vintage accessories, paintings and collectibles, “Melange” sounds like an emporium of gorgeous treats and treasures.

I am in awe of this lady. An adventurer, a pioneer, a tailor and designer, fashion buyer, entrepreneur, wife, mother, fabulous party-thrower and adoredby those fortunate enough to know her. At the grand age of 87, Greta is still going strong, and apparently has several more champagne bottles to pop.Cheers!
