PhilosophyWe believe that people who have an intellectual disability have the right to live in the community and

to participate actively in community life. Each individual, regardless of the degree of disability, should

enjoy the full rights of “citizenship” and the full experience of membership in the community. To be a

“citizen” is to enjoy the same legal and human rights, the same access to community resources and

services, and the same opportunity to contribute to the community as everyone else. To be a

“member” is to be an integral part of the social fabric of the community, participating alongside and

developing relationships with other members of the community.

We believe that each individual should be supported in efforts to exercise choice, to attain personal

goals, to make friends, to learn, to work and to play. Each individual is unique and deserves support

which recognizes and encourages that uniqueness, and which enables that individual to be a valued

member of the community.

We believe that the whole community is enriched when people who have a disability have

opportunities to participate alongside their non-disabled neighbours.

Reflecting on the past year speaks to the many initiatives and accomplishments resulting in the quality of supports for individuals who have an intellectual disability. We have continued to implement some of the goals identified in year two within the organizational strategic plan that address the need to be creative and innovative in order to continue to be responsive to the needs of individuals and families.

Here are some of the highlights from the past year:

• A Day Support Survey was completed for individuals 21 years of age and older with the purpose of gathering information regarding any unmet day support needs they may have • The information collected will be used to determine if we can alter or expand our current day support options, forecast future day support needs and to advocate on behalf of the individuals and families we support

• Based on the success of the Community on Campus program at UTM, we met with a representative from Sheridan College with the hope that a future partnership can be created with Sheridan offering individuals we provide support some additional opportunities

• 2013 data was collected from all areas across the organization and reviewed in January 2014. The information collected will now be used as a baseline for future years comparisons

• Data will also be used where relevant in future planning of systems, development of supports, training etc.

• The Year-Round Part-Time Employment Program is fully operational through the Employment Resource Centre providing support to 22 students in community work experience opportunities

• Community Living Mississauga received annual funding from our grant application to the United Way of Peel to continue this program

• We continue to offer employees “Building Social Capital and Community Connections” training

• The pilot project continues where specific Social Capital Interviews are conducted followed by a planning meeting and resulting in the development of a Community Engagement Plan

• Based on six-month follow-ups, some individuals have definitely increased their community involvement resulting in additional connections and relationships

• A Leadership Development Plan has been designed to help employees further develop their skills in their current position while also developing leadership skills.

We need the support of everyone to keep growing and moving forward!

In light of this year’s Annual General Meeting “Beyond you” we need you to look at your own personal and business networks. Do you know someone you could approach about an employment opportunity? A potential volunteer? A fundraising opportunity? A community based leisure/recreation opportunity? You may be able to make a difference in the life of someone else by simply looking “Beyond you!”

On a fiduciary level the Finance Committee has met monthly to review results and financial projections, recommended the approval of next year’s budget to the Board of Directors and kept the Board updated with quarterly financial reports.

On a financial level much like previous years, 2013/2014 has continued with tough economic times for everyone. From an organizational point of view we continue to receive no annual increases from our main funding partner “the province of Ontario”.

This however, has not deterred us from moving forward. Careful planning and investment over the last few years have seen us investing in technology and more efficient systems in the areas of Human Resources and Finances. These areas have started to repay the initial outlay of funds.

With these savings we have been able to:

- Invest further in technology geared at better communication systems and future cost savings- Spend additional funds to keep our properties and vehicles up to date and safe. The Ministry of Community and Social Services also assisted us with this.- Continue to invest in additional training for all employees- Continue to expand services without additional funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services

After all this we still managed to come in on budget and show an increase in our future dedicated fund accounts.

Effective September 2013, the delivery of Special Needs Resourcing Support changed within the Region of Peel impacting Community Living Mississauga’s Preschool Services. As a result of additional funding the Preschool Program, now called the Early Childhood Education Resource Services, has grown to serve additional children and address the waitlist for early intervention.

We now have sixteen Resources Consultants providing service to seventy seven licensed Child Care programs in Mississauga and we are successfully developing capacity in other licensed Childcare Centres where children who have a disability were previously not accepted.

In summary, 2013/2014 had some ups and downs but through careful planning and monitoring and accessing other sources of funding we ended the year on solid financial ground.

We sincerely wish to acknowledge the incredible support from the generous efforts of families, corporate partners and volunteers.

- The Community Foundation of Mississauga continues to be a great supporter by providing funding which gives children the opportunity to play in an inclusive baseball league

- We have been very fortunate to receive additional grants from United Way, Region of Peel and a few other granting organizations

- We continue to benefit from incredible third party fundraisers and many generous benefactors

Treasurer's Report

Community Living Mississauga Advocating at the Provincial Level

It has been a year of challenges and opportunities for the Developmental Services Sector in Ontario. We have been challenged to provide more programs and supports without additional funding. But we have also been given the opportunity to express our concerns through two provincial-level reports.

The first report was prepared by the Office of the Ontario Ombudsman on the Developmental Services Sector. This report, which is due out at any time, will challenge the Ontario government to address issues such as underfunding, excessive wait lists and an ineffective infrastructure.

In December of 2012, in conjunction with Brampton/Caledon Community Living, we wrote to Ombudsman André Marin to express our outrage that for a fifth year in a row, the developmental services sector received no increase in funding from the provincial government.

The lack of funding has resulted in growing wait lists, young adults graduating from the school system with little or no meaningful post-secondary opportunities, and families having to relinquish care for their sons and daughters because they can no longer cope. When the report is released, Community Living Mississauga will strongly urge our MPPs to act upon the Ombudsman’s recommendations through face-to-face meetings and various media outlets.

The second report was to be from the Select Committee on Developmental Services. This committee, made up of MPPs from both the government and opposition, listened to presentations and accepted letters from various government ministries as well as social service associations from across the province. Community Living Mississauga sent a written presentation to the Select Committee detailing several key issues. Unfortunately, this committee was disbanded when the provincial election was called and did not issue it's final report.

In addition to our individual efforts at the provincial level, Community Living Mississauga is also working with more than 300 other organizations in the Developmental Services sector to advocate as a unified body on behalf of the individuals we all support. By presenting a united front with common issues, we hope to force the provincial government to address our issues and take action. The Select Committee presented its interim report to the House of Commons earlier this year and its final report was issued on May 15, 2014.

But there is more that can be done.

Individuals supported by Community Living Mississauga and their families are urged to contact their local MPPs to show their support for the Ombudsman’s Office and the importance of reinstating the Select Committee on Developmental Services in order to affect future change!

Community Partnerships

• Over 150 children and youth participated in summer camps across Mississauga and an additional 35 teens participated in exciting activities in the March Break Teen Activity Program.

• Over 50 teens participated in the Weekend Respite Programs and enjoyed spending time with their friends and participating in exciting community activities.

• Youth Involvement Mississauga continues to offer exciting weekly events.

• 75 adults have made new friends and tried new activities by participating in the Community Engagement Resource Initiative.

• 10 children played baseball and developed friendships with their neighbourhood peers through our pilot project with the Mississauga North Baseball Association called Inclusion In Sport.

• 95 individuals played softball every Thursday evening in the Community Sports League.

• 8 adults from the Community Sports League participated in a Winter Training Camp facilitated by the Mississauga North Baseball Association at their brand new indoor training facility.

• We continue to strengthen our relationship with the City of Mississauga as they offer a variety of inclusive leisure and recreation programs throughout the community

• Many participants are able to experience campus life due to the partnership with the University of Toronto at Mississauga through the Community on Campus program

Communities have so much to offer - people of like minds, with common interests, fascinations or even passions to share with each other. Building community capacity and social capital is integral to the work of Community Living Mississauga.

These connections prove time and time again how the quality of life of individuals who receive support are enhanced as a direct result.

Here are just some of the highlights of the past year:

• With the ongoing support of our key media partners, Community Living Mississauga is able to promote awareness throughout the Mississauga community. We continue to have tremendous support from our media partnerships with Rogers Television, The Mississauga News and SNAPd community newspaper

• Community Living Mississauga participated in a number of community events, including Rotary Club of Mississauga-Meadowvale's Resident Appreciation Day, Sheridan College's International Persons With a Disabiilty Day, the Peel Inclusion Resource Services Launch and several Parent Information Nights at schools throughout Mississaauga

• Representatives from our organization made presentations to Rotary Club of Mississauga City Centre, Rotary Club of Mississauga West, Peel Professional City Club and participated in the United Way of Peel's Speakers Bureau

• For the fourth consecutive year, we rallied more than 20 volunteers to assist at a refreshment station during the Mississauga Marathon’s 5 and 10 K race. This year we also had members of the Peel Professional City Club volunteer along side staff and individuals supported by Community Living Mississauga

Community Awareness

• The Employment Resource Centre currently assists approximately 270 people to reach their employment goals at more than 170 companies across Mississauga

• We have an existing partnership with the Mississauga Parks and Recreation Department providing our Summer Work Experience Program participants with hands-on landscaping experience

• Our Job Path program continues its relationship with the Co-operators and Coseco, offering valuable office work experience opportunities.

• We have participated in the national Ready, Willing and Able work initiative, where Costco locations across the country are working with Community Living organizations to provide part-time employment opportunities

• We launched a new year-round, part-time employment experience and continue to cultivate new relationships with community businesses for this program

• Throughout the past year over 300 volunteers donated their time and commitment to enhance the lives of individuals in all areas across the organization

• We have been involved in 5 different Corporate Volunteer Partnership Days:

• Novartis volunteered once again for their Community Partnerships Day, where over 40 volunteers participated in various locations of the organization contributing to the lives of individuals in various ways.

• Through United Way Days of Caring, volunteers from community agencies and employee groups wanting to provide a ‘hands-on’ day completed various proj-ects throughout the association.

• Our partnership with GlaxoSmithKline involved over 50 employees from their IT and Regulatory Departments volunteering in several different areas of the organization.

• This year Baxter Canada began partnering with us for a Corporate Volunteering experience and volunteered at our annual golf tournament as well.

• Students from our local St. Joan of Arc Secondary School volunteered for a day completing specific projects.

• In August of 2013 the 10th Annual Community Living Mississauga Golf Classic was held where all revenue was generated for the Community Living Mississauga Foundation to support unfunded programs

• On March 27th, 2014 the Tribute Dinner celebrated its 30th year honouring Legendary Mayor Hazel McCallion!

• Several 3rd party events dedicated to raising funds for Community Living Mississauga included the I. Kaneff Charitable Foundation 42nd Annual Golf Tournament

• “A Night for Autism” Charity Dinner and Dance and One Piece for Autism's 2013 Gala also raised funds benefiting the Foundation

More than 650 people raised over $162,000 while honouring Mayor Hazel McCallion at Community Living Mississauga’s 30th annual Tribute Dinner on Thursday, March 27th.

The evening, themed “A Lifetime of Community Giving, Community Living”, celebrated Mayor McCallion’s contribution to the growth and development of Mississauga over the past four decades.

“This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Community Living Mississauga Foundation Tribute Dinner,” explained Jack A. Prazeres, Chair of the Tribute Dinner Planning Committee. “To celebrate this milestone anniversary, it seemed obvious that we needed to honour the woman who has served as mayor during each and every one of those events.”

The evening included remarks from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, John Tory as well as video greetings from former Premier Bill Davis.

For 2014, the organizing committee connected with Carassauga to create a truly multicultural event. Tribute Dinner attendees experienced Tastes of the World food stations from various Carassauga pavilions, enjoy music and dancing from a variety of cultures.

“This year’s Tribute Dinner truly represented the diverse community Mayor McCallion has helped create,” said Prazeres.

Guests participated in both silent and live auctions and they were treated to entertainment from various cultural groups who will also be participating in the upcoming Carassauga festival.

As has been the case for the past 30 years, attendees experienced an entertaining evening while supporting an important community organization. Proceeds from the event enable children and teens who have an intellectual disability to actively participate in a variety of summer camp programs offered throughout Mississauga.

Former summer program participant, Michael Lazowski, shared some of his experiences from the camps he attended and told guests about the impact the programs had on his life.

Throughout her three-and-a-half decade term, Mayor McCallion has maintained a soft spot for the city’s youth. So it was very appropriate that proceeds from this evening’s dinner went towards Community Living Mississauga’s unfunded leisure and recreational programs including the Summer and March Break programs supporting over 200 children and teens to have a fun summer, participating in the life of their community alongside their non-disabled peers.
