Thanks to all of you who supported my fundraising efforts for this amazing cause. Alzheimer’s is currently the most underfunded epidemic facing our nation. With your unbelievable support, we were able to raise more than $10,000 surpassing my personal goal.And...I came in 2nd place in the dance competition to a very worthy opponent, former mayor, Shirley Franklin. It was a great experience and my take-away is an

appreciation for the sport of dance, which I will continue.Last, but not least...hats off to Ballroom Dance Clubs of Atlanta and owner, Kristine Knipp, who sponsored the endless practice sessions and to Christjohn Batters, the most gifted teacher and talented professional partner I could have hoped for. Thank you so much.

from the editorDon’t Let It Weigh You Down

Shedding old habits can be a chore, especially when you have become so accustomed to doing things a certain way. However, when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, sometimes those old habits can be preventing you from achieving your goals – like losing weight, eating better or having healthier relationships. Don’t be bogged down by the old, and instead make room for the new!The best news is it’s never too late to start and there are plenty of resources out there to help you. In our Weight Loss feature this month (pg. 35), we get the inside scoop on what works and what doesn’t from local health professionals. We also get some sage advice from author Carolyn Evans and her Forty Beads Method on how it can improve the intimacy in your relationship. (pg. 28). Your life, afterall, is too short to be anything other than healthy and happy.

Happy reading!

5 Who wouldn’t want to tone, lift

4 One way to stimulate collagen production and reverse signs of aging is through skin

resurfacing technology. YSGG is a new ablative laser that uses an intermediate wavelength for both traditional full skin ablative resurfacing (Pearl) and fractionated resurfacing (Pearl Fractional). The Pearl Treatment uses advanced YSGG full skin resurfacing technology to remove

the epidermis and stimulate collagen production. The Pearl Fractional treatment, the newest

application in laser skin rejuvenation technology, treats a percentage of full thickness skin in a safe,

effective manner to improve deeper dermal color imperfections and wrinkles.

bestfunExplore new ways to get more out of lifeDiving InBy Jeyme Colodne I’m standing on a ledge inside a 700,000 gallon tank that makes up the habitat for one of the Georgia Aquarium’s most popular residents. Up to my waist in 59 degree water, I’m freezing even though I’m wearing a full wetsuit and there is a distinct, pungent smell of fi sh in the air. Somehow none of this matters though, because I am about to meet four of the most gorgeous creatures I have ever seen.

“Are you ready?” asks Mackenzie, one of the animal trainers at the Georgia Aquarium who is standing next to me in the tank. I nod quickly and she asks me to lightly slap the water to invite Beethoven, an 1,800 lbs. Beluga whale over for a visit. I am armed with a bucket of fi sh and a smile as his head emerges in front of us and he seems to grin right back at me. This isn’t a scene from a movie, this is the newest experience offered by the Aquarium called the Beluga & Friends interactive program, and what an experience it is! If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to feed, pet and spend time with the Beluga whales at the Aquarium, (Beethoven, Maris, Grayson and Qinu) then this is a not-to-be missed opportunity! From petting Beethoven’s tongue to playing catch with Qinu, these ‘canneries of the sea’ seemed to enjoy the encounter as much as I did.

This two hour program includes: an educational and informative orientation on the biology, conservation, training and care of

Beluga whales, an exclusive behind-the-scenes view of the Beluga whale and harbor seal exhibit, general admission to the Georgia Aquarium, a souvenir photograph and a complimentary towel. Being next to these animals is a humbling and inspiring experience. As I wrap my arm around Beethoven to pose for a photo, I’m in awe of how gentle and trusting he is and how lucky I am to be standing next to him.

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR OUR DOCTORS?If so, please e-mail to: [email protected]

Stephanie Walsh, MDChildren’s Healthcare of Atlanta

How can we encourage kids to be more active?

James Benton, MDRC Cancer Centers

What treatment options are there for prostate cancer?

There are a variety of treatment options for prostate cancer, including surgery, various types of radiation, cryotherapy (freezing), high intensity focus ultrasound (HIFU) – not yet approved by the FDA, hormonal therapy, watchful waiting, active surveillance, and more recently immunotherapy (Provenge) for advanced disease. To reduce your risk of cancer, you should avoid all nicotine products, control polysaturated fat intake, limit excessive weight gain, avoid excessive alcohol intake, and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Also, annual visits to your physician and routine screening for cancer are essential.

Paul V. Spiegl, MD Perimeter Orthopaedics, P.C.

What types of arthritis can affect the knee joint?

There are three basic types of arthritis that may affect the knee joint. Osteoarthritis(OA) is the most common form of knee arthritis. OA is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the joint cartilage gradually wears away. It most often affects middle-aged and older people. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an infl ammatory type of arthritis that can destroy the joint cartilage. RA can occur at any age. RA generally affects both knees. Post-traumatic arthritis can develop after an injury to the knee. This type of arthritis is similar to osteoarthritis and may develop years after a fracture, ligament injury, or meniscus tear.

David M. Whiteman, MD, FRCSSouthern Plastic Surgery P.C.

Can you explain fat grafting?

Another cosmetic procedure within the fi eld of liposuction is fat grafting, also known as fat transfer. Using liposuction, fat is harvested from areas where it is undesired and transfer them to other areas like the face, lips, and buttocks to restore a more youthful appearance. Depending on the needs of the patient, more traditional methods of liposuction may be recommended for the most effective results.

The best way to encourage children to participate in physical activity is to make it fun! Kids love to do things with you so pick activities that the entire family can play. Outside activities are always fun. The park is a great place for kids to work on all types of exercise. Going across the monkey bars is strength training; running up the stairs of the slide is interval training and sliding down works on balance and coordination! You can help facilitate your kids’ activities by giving them specifi c actions to do - for example, ask them to go across the monkey bars, down the slide run around the park and then come back to you.

These are two potential issues that patients who suffer from low back pain should address. The best strategy for addressing low back pain combines active intervention with education and rehabilitation. The patient is an active participant in the healing process. The treatments I commonly recommend for low back pain include activity as tolerated, non-narcotic medical management (non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory medications and muscle relaxants), and physical therapy. Physical therapy typically involves stretching, strengthening, and trunk stabilization exercises. If the patient continues to have low back pain after having undergone these measures, referral to an orthopaedic specialist for further evaluation and treatment is warranted.

Q What are some treatments for helping low back pain?

At the peak of summer, families across the country are preparing for beach trips, sunny outings and excursions in the great outdoors. While protecting the skin against harmful UV rays may not make the top of the packing list, it’s certainly something to take into consideration. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with nearly one million Americans developing skin cancer each year. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is the most serious form.

As July is UV Awareness Month, it’s only natural to spotlight an organization fi ghting skin cancer head on: Atlanta’s Emory Winship Cancer Institute. The institute is Georgia’s fi rst and only cancer center designated by the National

Cancer Institute, with more than 30 cancer teams joining researchers, physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, engineers and social workers in an effort to prevent, treat, and control cancer.

The melanoma team alone consists of a multidisciplinary cancer team, featuring members from dermatology, medical-oncology, radiation-oncology, surgical-oncology and ophthamology.

Dr. Navneet Dhillon, Assistant Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory, has been a member of this melanoma dream team since March 2010. She says no two days at Emory are the same. Dhillon spends her time treating patients, teaching medical students, and working on developing research.

“Our team meets each week for what we call the Melanoma Tumor Board to review and discuss patient cases and treatment plans. This means that patients benefi t from the expertise of a full team of medical experts, all working together to develop the best treatment plan for our patients.”

Dhillon says while the exact cause of melanoma skin cancer is not known, there are certain risk factors linked to the disease, including too much exposure to UV radiation, certain types of moles on the skin, as well as fairness of the skin, or having a family history of melanoma.

“Catching melanoma early is critical in our ability to treat it,” Dhillon says. “Catching cancer before it has a chance to spread increases the chances of stopping it in its tracks. Melanoma is one of the few cancers which are deadly, even when it is very small.”

With the team’s designation as a Melanoma Center of Excellence by the Melanoma Hope Network (www.melanomahopenetwork.org), a network dedicated to helping those affected by melanoma, the Emory team is certainly on the right track towards combating this deadly skin cancer.

“We are honored by this designation. It means a tremendous amount to us to be recognized by an organization like the Melanoma Hope Network,” Dhillon says. “Our melanoma team is committed to working closely with our patients and their family members, and providing the best possible treatment and care. We place great value on communication, research and education.”

And while avoiding the sun altogether on your summer trips may not be feasible, Dhillon suggests these tips for covering up while outdoors.

“The best protection is staying out of the sun, and wearing appropriate clothing in the sun, such as wide brimmed hats and full sleeve shirts. Sunscreens are not usually the fi rst line of defense and do not guarantee complete protection from UV radiation, even when used correctly.”

When you think of solid, long-lasting

former therapist and singer, Carolyn

Evans found this element in her

marriage taking a downward turn, she knew she had

to do something to change that. On her husband’s

he would never forget: forty days of sex.

Author Carolyn Evans and her Forty Beads Method aims to add some spice to your relationship By Jeyme Colodne

Upon later refl ection, knowing that it was likely that schedules, moods and other elements might interfere, she decided to slightly alter her off er. “Only when I woke up in the morning and realized what I’d done, I became painfully aware of the fact that I didn’t have the emotional stamina or bodily constitution to survive that much sex,” Evans explains.

Instead, she decided to try a modifi ed version of her original proposition. She would ration out the forty days of sex. Th is idea became the basis of the Forty Beads Method which involved her husband placing a red bead into a small bowl (a Beadcatcher) by her bedside table to indicate that he wanted to ‘cash in’ one of his sex guarantees. “What started out as a half-baked, over-zealous idea had morphed into a token system, which evolved into the full-blown Forty Beads Method,” says Evans.

Placing a bead in her Beadcatcher not only signaled his interest in sex, but also symbolized the understanding that he would defi nitely get lucky within the next 24 hours. Th is simple shift turned out to be one of the best things to happen to Evans and her marriage. “Life is just easier and a whole lot more fun,” Evans says, “Even when the hard stuff pops up, we’re ready for it and deal with it better as a couple, because the beads keep us connected to each other.”

Spreading The WordEvans felt strongly that if this method worked in her marriage, there would no doubt be a few other marriages that could benefi t from her discovery. So she decided to fi nd out. “I was so fl oored by the amazing changes happening in my relationship but I thought how could all this be happening just because I gave him a bunch of beads?” Evans refl ects, “I

had a hunch it would work for other women because I’m a really hard one to convince." Evans decided that simply talking about it to friends wasn’t enough, she decided to form a local Bead club in her hometown of Charleston where women could get together and talk about how the Method was working for them and off er each other support.

“Once I developed the Method—the rules, the subtleties and began to understand exactly why it works so well, I had to share it with other women,” she says, “And you know, when we women fi nd something that works for us, we like to tell all our friends about it. So that’s how this Forty Beads Movement began—very organically—by word of mouth.”

Th e next step seemed obvious – a how-to book explaining the Method and how it worked. Penning her fi rst book, Forty Beads: Th e Simple Sexy Secret for Transforming Your Marriage turned out to be a labor of love, both literally and fi guratively. “Writing this book was like pouring water from a pitcher,” she recalls, “I started writing it and I couldn’t rest until it was done. I’d wake up at 4 a.m. and write all day. ‘Obsessed’ would be a word that comes to mind. It took me about four months to complete the manuscript.”

Breaking Down The MethodEvans is quick to explain that her book does not dispense advice on doing the actual deed, but instead gives direction on getting you and your partner in the mood. “Sex keeps a couple connected—both physically and emotionally—and a healthy sex life is an important part of a healthy marriage,” Evans explains. “Th e Method is about couples having fun as they pull sex back to the front burner of their relationship.” Th e idea of having and maintaining a healthy sex life is not a new idea. It’s the presentation of the Method that seems to have captured people’s attention as well as set it apart from other self-help or relationship-help books.

One of the concerns that some have had with this method is the idea that sex is a commodity that must be ‘bought’ with the currency of ‘beads.’ Evans addresses this idea in the chapter aptly named “Beads as Currency.” Beads have had a long-standing history of being used during trade and have at one time had a monetary value placed on them. Evans claims that taking this “long-abandoned token system and applying it to sex inside a marriage might seem crazy, but it’s really not.”

As we go along our busy day, there is usually a long list of things we need to accomplish. Evans challenges readers to take sex off your “mental list” and place it in your “physical world” instead, making it a defi nite instead of just a possibility. Th e simple act of doing this can change how couples view having sex. “Th at bead in your Beadcatcher is a physical representation of your commitment to the Method and more importantly, your relationship,” Evans explains, “Using the Method separates sex from the things you mean to do in any 24-hour period, and puts it with the items that you’re going to do.”

With the Method, sex becomes a priority for the couple, encouraging intimacy and creativity in the bedroom. “Th e Method is about choosing love—again and again and continually moving a relationship forward. It’s about not getting bogged down by the petty minutiae of the day, like the sock on the fl oor or the toilet seat left up,” says Evans, “Couples who use the Method continually rise above what commonly pulls them apart on a daily basis.”

More from Carolyn Evans…

1) How would you describe Th e Forty Beads Method?

Th e Forty Beads Method is a sweet little token system that sort of magically dissolves the negative tension that can build around sex in a marriage (specifi cally, the frequency with which it does or does not occur) and replaces it with the sex life you always thought you should have, which in turn creates the relationship you've always wanted. It’s all about creating that sense of abundance around sex—which permeates the whole relationship.

2) What is the best complement/story you’ve gotten from fans of Th e Forty Beads Method?

Of course, I get lots of “Th ank you’s” from men, but the greatest complement I keep getting is from women telling me that they feel like I’m one of their best friends talking to them when they read Forty Beads. I love that. I feel such a bond with every woman who uses this Method and I love connecting with them on my Facebook page. Oh my gosh. Th ere have been so many amazing stories. I’ve had many couples tell me

“I’m so thrilled that the book is resonating with so many women on such a deep level.”

that the Method saved their marriage and nothing in this world could make me happier. To impact a life like that? It doesn’t get any better than that.

3) Do you feel everyone can benefi t from Th e Forty Beads Method?

No. Th e Method is defi nitely not for couples where there is abuse of any kind going on. I say to women that if they’re married to a complete jerk, no, the Method is not for them. Otherwise, yes, I’ve found that the Method is fun and eff ective for couples who struggle with confl icting libidos and also those who aren’t really having problems with sex, but just want to change things up and bring some playfulness back to their marriage.

4) How long were you a therapist and how has that background helped you when writing your book?

I worked as a therapist for maybe four to fi ve years, but I think once you’re a therapist, you’re kind of always a therapist—as far as how you view your world. I’ve always been fascinated with people and what makes them do what they do so I guess my personal curiosity along with my desire to improve my own situation were both helpful in writing the book.

5) What makes Th e Forty Beads Method unique?

Well, to my knowledge (and I’ve had lawyers research this) there has never been a token system method that involved sex before Th e Forty Beads Method. Some people are really freaked out by the whole token system—beads for sex—kind of thing, but it’s about sex in a marriage so…

6) What has been the reaction from men who participated in Th e Forty Beads Method?

Th ey LOVE it.

7) What questions or reactions have you received from fans?

I get emails everyday from men and women thanking me for writing this book. Th ey tell me things like: Finally somebody came out with it—this truth about sex in a marriage. And: You’re describing my life and my marriage in your book. I’ve been surprised and delighted to hear that couples are actually reading the book together, which I think is a great idea, I just hadn’t predicted that would happen.

8) What would you like readers to take away from the book?

Th at every choice we make and every action we take either brings us closer to or pulls us further from the love we want. My Beaders tell me that using the Method helps them become more conscious in their relationship and they learn to choose to look at the big picture and not to get pulled down by the irritating little things like they used to.

9) How have you handled all the attention the book has garnered?

I have a fantastic husband who helps out a ton. And I’ve been trying to take good care of myself—I go to bed early and get up early.

10) Do you continue to use the Method in your own relationship?

Absolutely! We’ll never stop Beading. Th at’s the great thing about the Method—it’s totally sustainable.

Most

individuals

who wish

to lose

weight typically begin their

diet around the fi rst of the

year or even the beginning

of spring, as bathing suit

season is just around the

corner. Although we are

smack-dab in the middle of

summer, it is not too late to

attain a healthy lifestyle.

With so many gimmicks, gadgets and diet fads on the market that guarantee weight loss, it’s easy to get discouraged and give up altogether. However, when you understand the basic building blocks of healthy living, you can enjoy weight-loss success for life. Don’t fall into the trap of empty promises; instead, focus on tried-and-true techniques that take weight off slowly but surely. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling healthy and fi tting into your favorite pair of jeans.

1) Forget the Diet, Change Your Lifestyle“Don’t think ‘diet’—this word implies a temporary approach to weight loss. Instead, think ‘lifelong meal plan,’” says Lisa Giles, MS, RD, LD, CDE, registered dietitian and certifi ed diabetes educator at Northside Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Education. “Th e right meal plan is 50 percent of the equation. It should be a plan that is tailored to a person’s daily work or school schedule, medical needs and behavior patterns to promote successful and lasting weight loss. Meal planning has to be sensible and sustainable for the long haul or it won’t work,” she adds.

According to local nutrition and fi tness expert Mark Macdonald, “Beginning a nutrition plan is all about preparation and education. People typically start diets when they are at their tipping point: their clothes are too tight, their weight is higher than ever before, or their energy is too low.” Macdonald, who is the creator of the Venice Nutrition Program and author of New York Times best selling book, Body Confi dence, notes the danger in this approach to dieting. “When people become frustrated, they become desperate for immediate results. Many individuals fail because emotions dictate motivation, and they are willing to do anything to progress.” As they begin the plan, they may progress but not fast enough, eventually becoming unmotivated and abandoning the plan.

Th e key to experiencing weight loss success is to surrender the dieting mindset and replace it with goals based on the eff ort you can put into your health. “Th e reality is that with the right plan, all health goals can be achieved—the only unknown is the time frame in which you will achieve them. Everything in life is an ever-evolving process, and your health is no diff erent. Staying present with your goals and evaluating them on a weekly basis keeps your emotions in check and sets you up for success,” says Macdonald.

The Skinny on Healthy Weight Loss

Ten things you should know about losing weight the r ight wayBy Alison Broderick

The HCG DietThe HCG diet is a weight-loss program based on human chorionic gonadotrophin, a hormone that is naturally secreted during pregnancy to ensure enough nutrition for the fetus to grow. When the body is fl owing with HCG, it mobilizes the abnormal deposits of fat for nutrition during times of starvation or very low-calorie diets. As these fat stores are being utilized, the weight drops rapidly.

Dr. Sarah Ghayouri weighs in:

“It is not uncommon to lose 0.5 to one pound a day on the HCG diet. The nutrients released into your blood give you energy and reduce your appetite naturally,” says Dr. Ghayouri, medical director at Atlanta Wellness & Aesthetics. “Considering all the risks associated with obesity and the side effect of appetite suppressants and other diet pills, HCG is relatively safe.”

The program requires medical supervision to ensure the safety of patients. “More than 95 percent of my patients lose weight on this program. The weight loss is variable depending on how compliant they are with the diet. Overall, people feel better emotionally and physically on HCG and are able to complete the diet.”

Dr. Gail Ravello weighs in:

“What makes HCG different from dieting alone is that many restrictive diets can trigger a “starvation mode”, putting the brakes on your metabolism and actually causing fat storage. HCG combined with a reduced calorie meal plan (500 calories per day) stimulates the body to mobilize stored fat, making it available to your body as an energy source.” explains Dr. Ravello of Natural Medical Solutions. “This means fat is burned instead of muscle, without the typical hunger pains one would experience with such a low calorie program. It is common that HCG dieters fi nd that even very small servings, to be completely satisfying.” This program helps reset your caloric needs, your metabolism and fat regulations system. It's important to continue to be aware of the foods you take into your body and your caloric intake. After completing the HCG diet, you should fi nd your appetite, eating behavior, and of course, your body has changed.

2) Make Exercise a PriorityIf making healthy lifestyle changes and establishing a lifetime meal plan makes up 50 percent of weight loss, then a regular exercise regimen makes up the other half. “It is virtually impossible to maintain long-term weight loss without regular physical activity. Th e goal should be at least 30 minutes a day, fi ve days per week. Th is is a minimum goal—strive for an hour of activity, if possible,” Giles comments.

According to David J. Wyatt, MD, owner of WeightLossMD in Vinings, “I caution patients about exercise routines that are too ambitious. I look at a person's baseline activity and try to alter it somewhat. Th at way, the change is attainable and maintainable in the long run. It is important to use the ‘muscle confusion’ approach and incorporate various exercises into your routine, including interval training, strength training, aerobics classes, dance, swimming, etc. Ultimately, you should enjoy your workout.”

3) Keep a Food Journal“Journal writing can be powerful and should include diet and exercise habits,” says Cris Hartley, RD, LD, CDE, manager of the Diabetes & Nutrition Education Center at Gwinnett Medical Center. A daily food diary boosts awareness, improves self-control and keeps you accountable. By recording your food intake and workouts on a daily basis, you will begin to notice patterns in your eating habits and exercise routine. A daily journal serves as a great motivator for sticking to the plan. “Th e most eff ective weight loss methods include implementing strategies for changing behaviors and habits, maintaining a positive attitude and fi nding motivational factors along the way,” says Hartley.

If keeping an actual journal is inconvenient for you, there are several phone applications and websites that help you keep track of your daily food intake. MyNetDiary and MyFitnessPal are convenient mobile applications, and Weight Watchers off ers useful online tools. Also, the American Dietetic Association provides a wealth of sound, evidence-based advice at www.eatright.org.

4) Ask for Help When NeededAccording to Carlos Jordan, certifi ed super trainer and owner of Ultimate Bodies by Carlos, “One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose weight is giving up their current eating habits cold-turkey and starting a rigid, usually unhealthy diet in its place.” Jordan suggests consulting a professional if you are serious about changing your lifestyle. Nutritionists and

certifi ed personal trainers are knowledgeable in their respective fi elds, and can determine the best plan for

you.

“Each approach to weight loss is diff erent,” says Hartley. “To provide further support and develop a map, the Gwinnett Medical Center off ers a program called Diet by Design, which is a personalized, fl exible approach to weight management. One of our

registered dietitians acts as a personal coach, and will design a plan tailored to suit your lifestyle.”

Meena Kakarala, MD, a board certifi ed internist at Piedmont

Physicians Group, emphasizes the benefi t of a supervised dietary plan (like Weight Watchers) that educates

chronically overweight individuals in regards to healthy food choices, portion control and calorie content of the diff erent food

categories. “A good nutritionist/dietitian or physician can also do

this to a more limited degree. Sure, taking a weight loss pill (be it over-the-counter or prescription) is easy, but in my opinion, it is not sustainable or advisable in the long run and does nothing to educate the person about healthy choices over the course of his or her life,” she says.

5) Set Reasonable Goals“Oftentimes, people make too many changes too quickly. Th ey set short-term goals for weight loss that are not realistic for improving health. Some fasting and starvation type diets can peel off pounds, but most of the weight that is lost is only water loss, which comes back as fast as it was lost,” says Ashley Ritchie, RD, LD, community nutrition education specialist and culinary specialist at Good Measure Meals.

While short-term goals may serve as motivating factors to stay the course, they should support the long-term goal. Remember, healthy weight loss will not occur overnight. “Th e advice I always give people who are trying to lose weight is they don’t have to make enormous changes to their lives. If they can make two or three diet-related changes and do them consistently, they will experience success. Most people try to change

Body WrapsThere are many different types of body wraps. Generally, a body wrap involves applying a solution, lotion or gel to the body, and then wrapping the body in blankets, towels or bandages for a period of time in order to achieve weight loss or inch loss, as well as moisturize and tone the skin. A body wrap removes toxins from your body and replaces them with nutrients the body needs. This is done through the skin—the most porous part of the body.

“Suddenly Slimmer is Atlanta’s exclusive provider of The Suddenly Slender Body Wrap system. Unlike most spas and salons, we focus on providing a wide range of high quality, healthy mineral body wraps. We are so confi dent about our wraps that we offer the highest inch-loss guarantee in Atlanta: 10–30 inches or your next wrap is free. You will notice a signifi cant improvement in cellulite, stretch marks and loose skin,” says Julie Tracey, co-owner of Suddenly Slimmer.

As long as you keep your weight the same and return for the recommended ‘maintenance wrap’ once every three to four months to draw out accumulated toxins, Suddenly Slimmer promises permanent inch loss. “You will not sweat with our wraps, and you can drink as much water as you wish before and after the wrap,” notes Tracey.

Whether you’re gearing up for bathing suit season or attending a special event, a body wrap will give you a boost of confi dence. What’s more, the anti-aging properties of body wraps are ideal for rejuvenating dry, leathery and sun-damaged skin, and for reducing stretch marks, double chins and wrinkles.

.

too many things at once and end up doing none of them often enough to make a diff erence,” says Darren Triplett, MS, Senior Health Partner at Emory/Georgia Tech Center for Health Discovery and Well Being. Come up with a sensible plan and stick to it.

“Weight loss is not a quick process. Set reasonable time frames for losing weight. Prepare yourself up front for a slow, steady progression of 0.25 to two pounds per week. You may need to lose 30 pounds, but break it into smaller goals like fi ve to six pounds per month until you reach your goal. Also, set realistic weight goals to minimize disappointment. If you haven’t been a size four since your wedding day 30 years ago, chances are it’s unrealistic,” notes Giles.

6) Allow Yourself to CheatDo not to deprive yourself of your favorite foods. When reviewing your food journal, use common sense to determine when it is time to treat yourself. If you have spare calories on a given day and want to indulge in a sweet treat, go for it.

Keeping yourself from enjoying your favorite foods only sets you up for failure in the future. “Allow yourself two ‘cheat meals’ a week. If you crave something, allow yourself to go ahead and eat whatever you want in moderation,” advises Jordan.

Atlanta couple, Hillary and Bruce, lost a total of 185 pounds within one year after following a low-fat vegan diet. They participated in Dr. Neal D. Barnard’s GEICO intervention study and are also featured in his new book, 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart.

How many new diets or treatments did you try in your journey to lose weight? We had been trying to lose weight for years, mostly through making small changes and exercising a bit more, but portion-restrictive diets never worked. We knew that if we didn’t get healthy soon, we would start to have major health problems.

Tell us more about the GEICO study and why you decided to participate? Nutrition researcher Neal Barnard, M.D., led a 22-week clinical research study at GEICO headquarters to help employees lose weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and reduce absenteeism. We wanted to give it a try because there was science behind it and nutrition experts available to tell us what to do. We were provided with low-fat vegan meals, cooking demonstrations, and educational sessions led by doctors and dietitians. As the weeks went by the pounds were dropping like crazy. Eight to ten weeks into the study we had already dropped (30) pounds. We were really excited because this was something that was working better than anything we had tried before. We knew we were on the right path because it didn’t feel like a challenge anymore.

How did doing the diet/exercise program together help you to stick with it and stay motivated?Well, in the beginning, it was really helpful to completely clear the house of all food that we shouldn’t be eating, so being in a 100% vegan household helped, and splitting the cooking and grocery shopping responsibilities was also really useful. As we started to see results, it was great to have a partner that was also seeing results as even more positive feedback.

What is the best piece of advice you can give someone who wants to lose weight? 1. Really don’t use any oil—we cut it out completely, and I think this really helped get us down to the low-fat levels and lose weight. We stopped using oil at all in recipes or for cooking—there are so many great alternatives (vegetable broth, apple sauce, water, cooking spray) for different uses of oil, and it really doesn’t affect the fl avor of the food.

2. Use technology—there are so many great resources, including mobile apps that help track food and exercise and even tell you nutritional information and ingredients at restaurants, as well as an unlimited supply of healthy, vegan recipes for your favorite foods (my favorites are eggplant parmesan and macaroni and cheese, both of which I can make with little or no fat and are really tasty). The Internet is also a great place to learn about and buy healthier or vegan products.

7) Research How It WorksSince many people want a quick fi x to weight loss, they often fail to research how the body actually sheds pounds. According to Gale Hadaway, a certifi ed health and wellness coach and president of Her Health Matters, LLC, “It is basic calories-in and calories-out. We have to use what we take in; if we don’t, then we store the calories as fat. For example, if a person eats a bagel for breakfast, the carbohydrates cause a spike in blood glucose. In response, our pancreas releases insulin, and the insulin will put the glucose in fat cells for storage. Th e blood sugar, or glucose, then drops, and we become hungry for a high-carb fi x. Th is cycle encourages overeating and weight gain, and eventually causes health problems.”

Macdonald’s solution to healthy weight loss stresses the importance of blood sugar stabilization. “Rather than using nutrition to lose weight, nutrition should be used to create internal hormonal balance in your body. Th is is accomplished by stabilizing your blood sugar—there are three core principles to stabilizing your blood sugar: eat every three to four hours (fi ve to six meals a day, within an hour upon waking and within an hour of going to sleep); eat a balanced combination of protein, fat and carbohydrates per meal; and eat the optimal amount of calories per meal (not per day),” he says.

He continues, “By following these core principles, your blood sugar will remain stable and your body will be in balance. Th is balance ignites your metabolism and triggers the release of your stored body fat, which then gets burned in your muscle for energy. Most important, stable blood sugar protects your muscle mass, which directly aff ects the speed of your metabolism.” Macdonald says this new mindset will provide you with the tools to permanently reprogram your metabolism and achieve all your health goals.

8) Know Your Medical History“While most people that struggle to lose weight are relatively inactive and consume excessive food portions, a person’s medical history can also aff ect his or her ability to lose weight,” says Kakarala. If you know you have family members who are prone to weight gain due to certain health conditions, it doesn’t hurt to get yourself checked out. Also, if you suff er from thyroid disease, diabetes, arthritis or any other medical condition, consult your physician before making signifi cant lifestyle changes. Know your limits!

9) Fill Up on Smart FoodsTh e key to losing weight the right way is… eat! In order to keep your metabolism operating the way it should, you must provide it with food to burn. If you go more than three to four hours without eating, you run the risk of binging at your next meal. Th e trick is to stay satisfi ed.

“Some people quit because they are constantly hungry. Make sure not to skip meals, and plan snacks when going more than four hours without eating. Make sure meals and snacks pair fi ber-focused carbohydrates with lean protein to give you energy and prevent hunger. Don’t just eat an apple and expect to be satisfi ed until dinner; add a handful of nuts to that apple for staying power,” notes Giles.

Try eating smart foods such as fruit or raw vegetables as a snack, almonds before lunch, and a salad or cup of soup before dinner. If you have a sweet tooth, layer fruit at the bottom of a scoop of light ice cream or yogurt. Th is not only helps you feel more satisfi ed, but also shaves off calories. Bottom line: if you’re hungry, eat. Just make sure you eat the right foods.

10) Don’t Give Up“Small changes lead to big results,” says Wyatt. “Th e scale is only a tool—be sure to look for other signs of improvement, like looser clothing, decreased body fat and more energy. Even if you’re not losing as much as you had planned in a month’s time, focus on the positive changes and keep at it.” If you fi nd yourself feeling down, fi nd an exercise buddy who will keep you focused. Above all, keep a positive outlook and remember that all your hard work will pay off !

CELEBRITY FITNESS AND HEALTH expert and star of CW network program Shedding for the Wedding, Jennifer Cohen weighs in on getting healthy and keeping the "lb’s" at bay.

With so many diet fads out there, how do you know which one is right for you (if any)?I don't believe in any fad diet. I believe in simply eating as clean as possible. That means no processed foods. Try to eat everything in its natural form and I promise you will see those extra pounds fall off. A great trick with this is to only shop on the perimeter of the grocery store, where all the fresh items are sold.

What is the best piece of advice you could give someone who is just starting to work out?Best piece of advice would be to pick something you enjoy or hate the least, that way you will do it. Summer is around the corner so you might have always had an interest in taking up tennis lessons, or joining a walking/running club. I always tell people to also ease their way into any activity as opposed to doing too much too soon.

What are some common concerns you get from people who are trying to lose weight?A common concern is that people don't think they have the time. People should schedule their workout like any other appointment in their day. You

and your health should be just as big a priority as anything else you "need" to do.

What is the best way to keep yourself motivated to lose those extra pounds?A great way to keep yourself motivated is to fi nd a workout

buddy. That way you both can motivate each other and have some fun along the way. Another way is to set realistic goals for yourself that

you can obtain. The best motivator is seeing progress, so if you have small wins it helps you keep going!

Losing weight is a combination of good diet and exercise - how do you

fi nd the right balance? You should allow yourself one cheat day a week to eat what you like and the rest of the week try and be as consistent as

possible. There are plenty of ways to eat healthy and also feel like you’re treating yourself.

Dental bonding is a composite resin material applied to the tooth for a natural looking restoration. Aesthetically speaking, the resin has the ability to cover any natural fl aws, using a thin coat of composite material to give you a beautiful smile.

Bonding is a simple and quick procedure that can be done by your family dentist or a certifi ed cosmetic dentist. The resin material is applied to the tooth and hardened with a specialty light, bonding the material to the tooth. Think along the lines of a sculptor and their clay; the doctor molds and shapes the resin to your natural teeth, matching the color and contour.

Bonding is considered for the restoration of: • Chipped or cracked teeth

• Closing spaces between teeth (seen in photos below)

• Cosmetic alternative to amalgam, mercury fi llings

• Decayed teeth (composite resins are also used to fi ll cavities)

• Discolored teeth – improving their appearance

• Elongating teeth

• Reshaping teeth

• Receding gums – to protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed

There are several advantages for bonding, including its convenience and cost-eff ectiveness. Compared to veneers or crowns, bonding is a fraction of the price and is a relatively painless procedure. However, keep in mind that bonding is recommended for small cosmetic fi xes – should your teeth need additional work than listed above, be sure to consult your doctor for a treatment plan that best fi ts your smile.

ADHD - NOT JUST IN CHILDREN ANYMORE

ADHD is a relatively common psychiatric disorder among adults. The prevalence of ADHD is thought to be more than 11 million cases in the United States alone.

ADHD was widely thought to be strictly a disorder of childhood. Now there are numerous scientifi c papers and clinical trials that acknowledge the existence of an adult version of this disorder, which can be traced back to the younger years.

Adult ADHD is associated with multiple co-morbidities such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other personality disorders. Adult ADHD is a valid psychiatric disorder of adulthood distinct from these other conditions.

Adult attention defi cit disorder differs from the childhood variant because the hyperactivity

in adults may be replaced by other symptoms such as anxiety, impulsivity and inattentiveness. In fact, prior to 2002 there were no diagnostic guidelines, but there have been great advances since. Seven symptoms were earlier proposed to characterize adult ADHD:

1. Inattentiveness2. Hyperactivity3. Mood Liability4. Irritability and angry temper5. Impaired stress coping behavior6. Disorganization7. ImpulsivitySome children with ADHD continue to have it

as adults. And many adults who have the disorder don’t know it. They may feel that it is impossible to get organized, keep a job, or remember and keep appointments. Daily tasks such as getting up in the morning, preparing to leave the house for work, arriving at work on time, and being productive on the job can be especially challenging for adults with ADHD.

These adults may have a history of failure at school, problems at work, failed relationships and traffi c accidents. Like teens, adults with ADHD may seem restless and may try to complete several tasks at once, most of them unsuccessfully. They also tend to prefer “quick fi xes,” rather than taking the steps needed to achieve greater rewards.

Treatment is very rewarding. There are now medications approved by the FDA and group delivered cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in some cases as a supportive treatment. If you or someone you know may have Adult ADHD, call Johns Creek Family Medicine at 770-771-6591 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Zack Charkawi.

Zach Charkawi, M.D., is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Diabetic Association and the American Medical Association. Due to his specialized work, he is named in Who’s Who for his work with diabetes treatment, education and research. He also has extensive expertise with adult attention defi cit disorder (AADD).

Whether you set out to lose 20 pounds or 100 pounds, the goal with most weight loss efforts is to gain a healthier, more fulfi lling life. For many, after the pounds are shed, plastic surgery procedures are the fi nal step in reaching the physical and psychological fi nish line with weight loss. Duluth Double Board Certifi ed Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. David Whiteman answers your frequently asked questions about plastic surgery after weight loss.

Can plastic surgery help me lose weight?Cosmetic surgery is not the answer for weight loss, but it can certainly help patients further embrace their new bodies after weight loss and reveal their health-focused efforts. I work with ACE certifi ed personal trainer, Daryl Madison to formulate diet and exercise plans for patients who express an interest in losing weight before surgery. I always encourage healthy habits in my patients because a healthy lifestyle signifi cantly improves the surgery recovery process and cosmetic results.

What can be done about the excess, hanging skin left after weight loss?Procedures like a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or brachioplasty (arm lift) are specifi cally designed to tighten lax skin and the muscle underneath. Not just for weight loss, tummy tuck surgery is also a useful component of mommy makeover surgery for women who wish to repair the effects of pregnancy and child birth.

Isn’t post-weight loss plastic surgery only for those people who have lost signifi cant amounts of weight?Plastic surgery can be used to enhance your newly refi ned body no matter how much weight you’ve lost. While I don’t recommend surgery for anyone who anticipates drastic weight loss post-surgery, I have seen signifi cant improvement in patients who have lost moderate amounts of weight with liposuction of isolated areas of exercise and diet resistant excess fat like the lower abdomen, hips, and even back.

What does a plastic surgeon really know about weight loss and healthy living? While your plastic surgeon may not seem like your initial resource for tips on healthy living, as a doctor of medicine and a plastic surgeon, I have a keen understanding of just how intertwined your appearance is with how you feel. I know that if patients can commit to bettering their lives with healthier habits, they will also maximize the rejuvenation effects capable with plastic surgery.

It happened for me in one simple breath. At one of my fi rst Pilates Teacher Training workshops, I rolled off the cylindrical foam roller for the fi rst time and landed on my mat. My body melted into a relaxation unlike anything I’d ever felt before. I began to notice subtle sensations moving through me. Some felt like pulsations moving through my blood. Some were like waves of warm water washing over my body. I remember liking the feeling. Nothing else mattered in that moment. The whole world disappeared and I was the world all at the same time. This was something very new for me, and it was my little secret at fi rst. Not because I didn’t want to tell others about it, but rather because I didn’t know how to describe the feeling and I really didn’t know if anyone else would care. I had been teaching Pilates for about a year by that time, so I told a few clients about my secret and attempted to guide them into this mysterious yummy surrender. Sometimes it worked for them. Sometimes it didn’t. It was like an itch that I couldn’t quite scratch.

It’s been 16 years since that Pilates experience and I’ve had many more since then. Pilates is an excellent way to strengthen and stretch your body. When your done, your body feels like you’ve had a massage. Enjoy.

Besides being the name of my business, body awareness is a term that defi nes the pathway toward self-acceptance and true love. The action steps that take you on the journey inward and onto that pathway are simple, but they can be hard to choose. They require aligning your physical body with Earth and Heaven, being willing to feel your emotions fully even when it hurts, focusing your thoughts with pure intentions, and consciously choosing when to take action and when to wait for life to unfold naturally. You were born with all of this information available to you, but it takes focus and technique to put the knowledge to transformative use.

Aligning the BodyBecome aware of your posture as you move through this gravitational world. Your posture infl uences your state of being. When your bones and spine are aligned properly, you will have less compression on your joints and your muscles will function with ease and grace. The energy that moves through your meridians will fl ow like rivers and your vital organs will receive the nutrients that they are thirsty for. Your body needs good food, clean water, exercise and rest to thrive on this Earth. Learn to listen to your body and tend to it as a sacred temple. Love and appreciate your body, and the earth will feel your intention. She will align with your health. Your body is directly connected to the planet. Every step you take to benefi t the planet will support your own well-being.

The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fi xed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments. It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person.

When the S/I joint becomes infl amed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to over-use, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg infl ammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. Because of these symptoms, often times physicians look to the lower back and hips as the main cause and so the patient usually continues to have off/on chronic issues in that area, leading to potentially severe osteoarthritis of the S/I joint.

It is important to understand that the S/I joint relies on the health of the surrounding structures to maintain its health. For example; Weak ligaments and tendons in the area can cause mal-alignment of vital musculoskeletal structures, greatly contributing to S/I joint problems. Additionally knee problems, over extended periods of time can contribute to S/I joint issues.

What to do? Steroid or cortico-steroid injections should be an absolute last option because of the potential long term negative side effects to the joint and surrounding connective tissue. Many options for treating the S/I joint are available that may even restore full normal function. The goal of these treatments is NOT only pain suppression, but rather to eliminate the cause by correcting mal-aligned structures, improving the health of the joint and reducing the ligament laxity or weakness. Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover this treatment. To see if you qualify, call Total HealthCare Medical Clinics. Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-999-8531

“Be” Your Best Self

“We Are All Called”“Everybody has a calling and your real job in life is to figure out what that is and get about the business of doing it”. - OPRAH WINFREY

Sure enough, each of us has a very specific unique calling. Every single one of us has something important to contribute. Rather than compare yourself to another, look to see what yours is. What do you naturally provide your friends and loved ones? What lights you up -- what is your “spark”? This is the place to look.

Our life experiences mold us in a certain way -- sculpting us out uniquely. What have your experiences been? What has transpired in your life that now gives you a certain perspective that could in fact be valuable to others?

Each of us has our own unique calling. Once you begin to see this - - as Oprah says, “get about the business of doing it”. Whether in the marketplace or the carpool - - express it. Deliver the goods. “Answer the Call”.

Run For Wounded Warriors Saturday, August 6, 8 am.at Kennesaw First Baptist Church,

2958 North Main St., KennesawRun for Wounded Warriors, Inc. is a non-profi t organization that was established to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project through hosting a 5k race and 1 mile. It is the inspiration of Jonathan Borden who, when he was 17-years old, saw several biographies about severely wounded service men and women, on Memorial Day 2009 on the Military Channel. The bios were produced by the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) to raise awareness of these severely wounded heroes. This race is a qualifi er for the annual Peachtree Road Race, and is part of the Kennesaw Grand Prix series. The race will be held on August 6, in downtown Kennesaw at 8 a.m. Registration

can be completed through Active.com. This is a family-friendly race on a relatively fl at course. There will be a post-race party and awards ceremony. Please visit WWP’s website, www.woundedwarriorproject.org, and the event’s website at www.runforwoundedwarriors.org. These brave men and women deserve all of the support that we can give them.

Pay for college without going broke!Free local workshops help parents save thousands!

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier.

Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement.

‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well fi nancially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-fi gure income.’

Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make.

‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.”

North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year.

‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins.

Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more.

“The class is totally free, but seats usually fi ll up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says.

You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners.com.
