September has flown by and we await the rains - with perhaps some welcome October storms - to transform our winter landscape to the verdant green of summer. Inn on Rupurara has experienced an active month with leisure and conference guests enjoying the facilities on offer. We were delighted to receive the news that our restaurant retained its five-plate status in the Zimbabwe On A Plate competition this year, with a wonderful review published in The Standard on September 30. Also awarded to Inn on Rupurara, at the Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents 2012 Awards ceremony, was the runner-up award for the Best Country Hotel and Resort. We are proud of the Inn and our staff in their achievements and endeavours! It has been necessary to increase the feeding programme for the game animals and horses as the Rupurara Estate's vegetation is now low in nutritional value and we are carefully monitoring the situation until the rains. A most welcome addition to the Estate's staff in September was Paddington Dini, a young and enthusiastic bird guide. He has declared Rupurara Estate "a birder's paradise" and new sightings are recorded daily. We are, at present, revisiting and updating our bird list and Paddington looks forward to visits from keen birders with which to enjoy the walks through the Estate. Inn on Rupurara is actively involved in the Nyanga Publicity Association to promote our magnificent district. The Association is planning a clean-up of Nyanga Village, and the hotels in the district have also undertaken to clear the main road of litter for a kilometre on either side of the respective hotel entrances. The Association is also involved in an ant-snare campaign in the district, working with the community and National Parks. Group walks have rendered the collection of many snares and this will be an on-going exercise. We at Inn on Rupurara are ever vigilant with anti-snare patrols on the land within and outside our fence line. A site visit to Ziwa Ruins and Museum (formerly known as Van Niekerk Ruins) was also undertaken recently by the Nyanga Publicity Association for its members and this has highlighted another fascinating area for visits by guests to the hotel. We are planning a long-awaited Wellness Weekend in November, please contact Armadillo Travel in Harare for details and to make bookings for these special weekends. The Inn's Guest Relations Manager, Gloria Browning, and Chairman, Gordon Addams, were in attendance at the Best of Zimbabwe stand at the St John's College Spring Fair on Sunday October 7. It was wonderful meeting and greeting old and new acquaintances there.

HAZ Congress 2012
HAZ honours Gordon Addams Gordon Addams became the first person to win a prestigious hospitality industry trophy twice, when he was honoured at the 2012 Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe congress The event, held in Gweru, attracted delegates from all over Zimbabwe and ended with the annual Hospitality Awards banquet. The award to Gordon Addams was of the Creewell Plate for Excellence, named in honour of the late hotelier John Creewell and first won by Gordon two decades ago. The award was made in recognition of continued upholding of the highest standards of hospitality, especially within the Inns of Zimbabwe group and it was received by Gordon to a standing ovation from the 120 people present at the dinner.

Best of Zimbabwe was represented at the recent Sanganayi Travel Expo in Harare by several members: Amalinda Collection, The Hide, Antelope Park, Dunhu Ramambo and the Nyanga Tourism Association. They helped brief visiting travel buyers and local would-be travellers on the attractions they offered and showed the flag for the grouping. The Nyanga Tourism Association won a trophy for best publicity association stand.

The Amalinda Collection
Summer in the Matobo Hills is all about change. Like Chaucer's classic prologue to his Canterbury Tales, the land is sweetly, brilliantly alive. Trees begin to push forth their new brilliantly-green shoots while wild flowers tentatively peek their new buds through the scorched soil. The grey granite rock begins to disappear as the foliage revives yet the majesty of this wonderful land gradually remains stunningly apparent. The splendid scenery is complimented by the new and vibrant hues of the grass which changes from the wintery yellow we have become used to into a glorious melange of greens, reds and pinks. The sunsets are simply breathtaking, the dust and smoke in the air lending the day's end an aura of such magnificent majesty, it has to be seen to be believed. To this end, I often spend the end of my day watching this from Malindidzimu, Cecil Rhodes' visionary resting place.
Animal spotting becomes a real joy because many are wobblingly pregnant, holding forth the promise of new life in the green season. The frisky frolics of the impalas are balanced by the stately majesty of the white rhino as he slowly snuffles around one of his "girls". Our zebras at Camp Amalinda have been really vocal, whistling and snorting, huffing and puffing as they canter about, while the sole zonkey changes his allegiance between our two herds. We've even had a group of sable sleeping on the property for a short time! The birdlife is truly amazing; the migrants have returned which means we get to watch yellow-billed kites hunting, myriads of storks fishing, and the lovely little weavers will soon begin building their intricate and snug homes. We have ground hornbills nesting down the valley and I am greeted every morning by their eerie booming call that sounds a bit like "two-two-two pounds and six - no, no, no change!" One of my favourite sounds in the bush. When we hear it, it means the rains are not far off and then - the land will really come alive. Can't wait! (Article written by Paul Hubbard)

Rates Costs are rising, so rates have risen
Recent increases in costs for all hospitality operators has brought about a need to increase rates, among the most notable being a large increase in wages for staff. While operators regret having to do so, it is essential to pass these increases on but please be assured these increases are kept as small as possible. Please note that as of 1 March 2012 the rates at Inn on Rupurara will only include one activity NOT two.
Any additional activities may be booked and paid for at the Inn. New rates sheets with this change and an updated activity sheet will be issued soon. Anyone that has booked and paid in full prior to this announcement will still be entitled to two activities.
