Take a trip to the Absecon Lighthouse which is New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse and the third tallest lighthouse in the county. The lighthouse is located in Atlan-tic City and is open for climbing for those willing to make the 228 step climb. The lighthouse is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 4 -12, kids under 4 are free. If you can, plan your visit for a Wednesday and check out the lighthouses Wacky Wednesday events in July and August. Each week will feature a different theme with corresponding craft and movie. This program is from 11 am - 3 pm

Start your Atlantic City night out with the kids at the Comedy Stop at the Trop. Most nights Joe Holiday’s on stage with his Magic & Mayhem show at 6:30 pm. A fabulous family friendly show that mixes magic with comedy. Drinks, appetiz-ers, and kid meas are available during the show. Afterwards walk down to The Pier for the free musical light and water show at the end of the mall, visible on every level. The fun doesn’t end there. Walk over to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall for the Duality show. Music, lights, animation, and special effects all come together on the Boardwalk Hall facade for a show your kids won’t soon forget. The show is free, plays for 7-9 minutes at a time, and repeats several times an hour throughout the evening once the sun goes down.

Spend a summer day or two at one of Atlantic County’s many beaches. Each town along the coast has a great beach to visit. Make sure to back your beach toys, chairs, sunscreen and towels. Pack a cooler with snacks, lunch and drinks, just make sure to clean up after yourself and please don’t feed the seagulls. If you forget your cooler don’t worry many local restaurants deliver to the beach. Some beaches offer boogie board rentals or umbrella rentals. There are restrictions on what beaches allow rafts, surfing and other activities so check with your local beach patrol. Look for beaches with lifeguards. Lifeguards are on duty in most towns Memorial Day through Labor Day. Check out our listing of local beach tag rates and beach restrictions. Most towns offer one day a week that the beach is free.

The World of Wings is located in Tenafly. It is a beautiful museum and has an amazing butterfly atrium. They have everything from liz-ards and snakes to princess dress up and face painting. They also have bounce houses for jumping, ball pit and lots of arts and crafts for those busy kids. The museum consistently switches displays and adds new sections, you will never be disappointed. It also offers clubs, classes and fun events all season long.

Abma’s Farm is located in Wyckoff. Everything is homegrown with love, picked or cooked daily, and served fresh. Everyone loves to visit the petting zoo, pet the sheep or cow, feed carrot greens to the rab-bits, see their baby chickens, fancy birds, goats, ponies, donkey, calf and pigs. Starting in May on Saturdays the farm offers Pony Rides. On July 19th Abma’s is hosting a special farm day with lots of activi-ties for the kids. Please visit Abma’s website for more information. Abma’s Farm also offers fertilized eggs from their hens for hatching and incubators for rent..

Come visit Palmyra Cove in Palmyra, New Jersey. Palmyra Cove is a nature reserve open to the public 9am to 4pm daily. Check out the wetlands, wild creek, and nature reserve center on the Delaware River. There are many things to push and touch in the nature reserve and many places to view beautiful butterflies or the many birds. You can grab a guide and find all different kinds of wildlife through-out the park. Read our full Palmyra Cove review.

What’s not great about a free lake? Come down to Camp FAC on a Friday in July-August and take a dip in the lake. People of all ages can enjoy the lake, play in the sand or even take a canoe or boat ride. Hope over to the other side of the lake to play volleyball or another sport. You can also take a trip on a walking trail. There are swings to swing on and grills! For more details visit our post from last year.

Take a trip back in time at Batsto Village. Start at the Visitor’s Center to receive a map and information about the park. Can you believe how long Batsto has been there for? Take your time as you go down the long trails and see the beautiful lake. You will find so much wildlife, my personal favorite are the turtles. There are 40 different locations to stop off at like a saw mill, nature center, and dam where you will see a gorgeous man-made waterfall. Check out our Historic Batsto Village review for more information about these fun summer activities.

Stop by the Batsto Village Visitor Center first to get a map and information to explore the grounds.

Taking a younger child to the movies can be stressful! Having them get up and down off the seats, sliding off the seat, falling off the seat despite the booster, worrying you will annoy someone with your constant hushing to pacify can make a family movie date stressful. But not with movies in the park! Check our movies in the park series of loca-tions this summer! The great thing about movies in the park is that your children can play at the playground while waiting for dusk to hit. Once it’s dark enough bring your blanket (and pillows for when they say they are tired) lay out the blanket and watch on the giant blow up screen. Depending on the park you go to they will have popcorn and also have their concession stands open for ice pops and other great goodies. You could even pack a dinner!

Atco Raceway is a great way to spend a summer day. Come out for a night of fun watching cars race! If you have a race car fan or a child that enjoys cars they will love this. Just remember to bring some ear plugs because it will be very loud! I went many times with my family when I was younger and it was a great family fun experience. Atco Raceway is located at 1000 Jackson Rd in Atco.

3 Great Ways to Spend a Summer Day in Camden County

Another great way to spend a summer night in Camden County, New Jersey is at a River Sharks game. The great thing about the Riversharks games is that there is always something going on. Our family visited Campbell’s field last year. They have fireworks on Friday nights and they let the kids run the bases before or after some games. There is also a carousel with all different animals that children of all ages will enjoy and a play area on the other side of the stadium with a playground. Don’t forget to get your picture with Riversharks mascot, Finn who just may make an appearance. Check the schedule for special price days, days for special character appearances, and other family fun days! Don’t forget to get your picture with the iconic Campbell’s Kids before entering Campbell’s Field.

Cape May County has many little shore towns from Ocean City and south-ward. Each town has its own charm and atmosphere. As chronicled in the song On the Way to Cape May it is possible to drive from Ocean City south to Cape May in one day. A scenic trip down Ocean Drive will bring you through each town’s main street and give you a fun look at the beauty that is Cape May. Start in Ocean City, before crossing the bridge, stop at Corson’s In-let State Park, a great place to explore hiking trails. Continuing south you will be in Strathmere with it’s old sea shore charm and free beaches. For those with

On Tuesdays and Thursdays guided tours head down the beach are available for $1 per person. The Tuesday tour leaves from 29th Street beach while the Thursday tour leaves from Townsend Inlet Park on 94th Street. Each child is given a free bucket to collect their beach finds. Guides explain the types of shells, animals, and artifacts that can be found on local beaches. Tours start at 10 am and last approximately 1 hour. After the walk stop by Lou Dogs on 38th and Pleasure, where you will find a variety of fun-named hot dogs and a variety of toppings all at a reasonable price.

There is a reason that Ocean City is referred to as America’s Greatest Fam-ily Resort, and one of the biggest reasons is the Ocean City Boardwalk. The Ocean City Boardwalk boasts 2 amusement parks, a water park, in-door bounce place, a movie theater and several mini golf courses and arcades; not to mention a variety of shopping and dining options. The Ocean City Boardwalk is a perfect night time destination for families of all ages. The rides at both amusement parks are geared towards a wide range of ages, so you won’t have to worry about anyone getting bored. The Ocean City Music Pier, located on Moorlyn Terrace, will be offering Character Nights on Sunday nights starting in July. Character nights feature a parade of Ocean City Boardwalk mascots such as Wonder Bear and Mr. Peanut. After the parade characters will sign autographs and pose for pictures.

a sense of adventure try to find Twisties Tavern, a family friendly restaurant on the bay. Blink and you will be in Sea Isle City. Park on JFK Blvd and visit the playground or grab a bite to eat. Cruise through Avalon and Stone Harbor, home to some of the biggest beach homes along the Jersey Shore. Both towns have beautiful downtown shopping areas. Cross over the bridge into The Wildwoods and check out the Doo Wop themed hotels and restaurants. The Wildwood Boardwalk has several amusement parks and water parks. Take the time to stop and walk the boardwalk and play one of the many games and come home with a souvenir. Heading out of Wildwood you will find yourself in Historic Cape May. Park your car and wander the Washington Street Mall. Reward yourself for having made the journey with fudge from The Fudge Kitchen or some famous salt water taffy.

Entrance fees are charged per vehicle from Memorial Day until Labor Day. The cost is $5 per vehicle on weekdays for New Jersey residents and $10 for non-residents. On weekends, the cost is $10 for residents/$20 for non-residents per vehicle. There are trails for hiking and biking, nature trails (pick up a guide at the office), and a fitness trail. Swimming is available on the north side of Lake Nummy from Memorial Day through Labor Day while lifeguards are on duty. A beach complex contains changing area, restrooms, first-aid, and a concession stand. Historical and natural interpretive programs are offered throughout the year.

The Splash Park in Bridgeton, next to the Cohanzick Zoo opened in 2013. It’s a great place to cool off for a few hours on a hot afternoon. Your kids will have a blast splashing, blasting each other with water cannons, and just cooling off under the various sprinklers. Admission is $2.00 for a 2 hour session for each person who enters. This year the session hours have changed. Hours are 11:00am-1:00pm, 1:30pm-3:30pm, and 4:00pm-6:00pm. A new surface has been applied, so it’s not as slippery, and water shoes are now required for entry. Pack a lunch and eat in a nearby pavilion and see the white tiger feeding at the zoo (2pm daily), while you take a stroll through the zoo.

Did you know the Delsea Drive-In is the only drive-in movie theater left in New Jersey? I have fond memories of watching movies at the drive-ins back home in Pennsylvania and I can’t wait to take my boys here. Admission is $10 (+tax) for adults and $5 (+tax) for children age 3-11 for a double, sometimes triple feature. The box office opens at 6:00pm and I’ve often seen a long line snaking down Delsea Drive. The Drive-in strongly urges you to arrive early, as close to box office opening as possible. Outside food and beverages are prohibited, but they have an extensive menu with healthy options so come for dinner, stay for a double show and make a night of it!

Enjoy the Outdoors at Belleplain State Forest (on the border of Cape May County)

Located in a residential area of Short Hill is this quiet little gem that is over 16 acres in size. The woodland gar-dens are filled with wildflowers native to New Jersey, 40 species of trees, many species of birds, and even a 100 year old tulip tree. The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum serves to educate, research, outreach, and provide horticulture and zoological displays. You can visit the Arboretum to enjoy the gardens or your children can participate in one of their educational programs (the one day workshops, the Saturday morning program called “Environmental Eagles”, the summer camp) or the family might enjoy volunteering here. Some of their unique events have even included eco-logically responsible landscaping to camping under the stars. A relaxing summer day strolling through the natural and diverse terrain of New Jersey will be a great way to spend time with the family. Cora Hartshorn Arboretum is located at 324 Forest Drive South in Short Hills.

Applegate Farms has been an institution in Montclair for since the 1920’s. While it’s history goes back to 1848 which is impressive, let’s focus on important things like ice cream. They have the staples of any ice cream retailer such as vanilla, chocolate, but they also are proud of their unique creations such as Graham Central Station and Caramel Cow. They have sherbets, sorbets, low fat yogurt, cookies, and baked goods. Including a night time activity may contradict the title of this post, however the Family Fun Nights are a great time for the family. Last year, Applegate offered family friendly films on Wednesday nights at the end of June until the end of July. The Family Fun Nights include additional entertainment such as music, prizes, and activities. The calendar for this year’s events have not been published yet, but we will be adding their events to our New Jersey Calendar of Events.

3 Great Ways to Spend a Summer Day in Essex County

Considered one of the best zoos in New Jersey, the Turtle Back Zoo has consistently been building and adding on offerings every year. Last year, they built the Dinosaur Playground which has been tested by all of my family members and approved for its extremely cool design as well as its ability to occupy my children for a solid length of time. This year, they are construct-ing a new educational facility which should open in July where they plan on expanding the programs offered to children.

counted ticket price of $1.00. Children under two are free. Members are in-vited to attend Family Fun Nights and Night Moves. The zoo closes at 5 PM except during special events. Lastly, if your children love animals then look at the workshops available to children that enable them to have a closer look at the residents of the zoo. Opening Memorial Day Weekend for an additional cost, children can walk through a butterfly tent to interact with vibrantly colored butterflies. The zoo charges admission but parking is free.

Rent a Kanoe or Kayak at Scotland Run Park, they are $5 an hour per boat, first come first serve. You can get one from June 14th until August 31st. Scotland Run Park is located at 980 East Academy Street Clayton, N.J. 08322. You can also enjoy fishing, boating, and the nature reserve there. There is also a playground and picnic area across the ways from the nature reserve.

During the summer months you can go strawberry picking, blueberry picking, and in late August go Apple picking. My children love to take the hay ride around Duffield’s and into the the fields with their big bucks. Afterwards you can take them back and get them weighed. You can feed the animals and take a pony ride. There is also a play area to play on a tractor and an-other area to slide down slides and play on hay barrels. Remem-ber to stop by the market to get something good to eat there! Read our Duffield’s Farm review.

Red Bank Battlefield Park has a little bit of everything. It has a walking trail, for walking or bring your child’s scooter or bike. You can also have a picnic or do some grilling. Around the area you will find lots of historic memorabilia. The Delaware River is right there as well where you can splash your feet in, play in the water, or even skip stones. There’s also a playground for children one for older kids and a toddler area.

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift of friendship from the French in 1886. It is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy, but was not designated as a National Monument till 1924. Visiting Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty is something every child should experience, especially when you are visiting northern New Jersey or New York City. Families who want to enter the museum, pedestal or crown need advanced reservations and tickets. Advanced reservations allow visitors to climb to the level they want as well as avoid waiting in lines during their visit. Crown, pedestal, and ground only tickets are available. A walk from the ground floor to the Statue of Liberty’s crown is roughly equal to walking up a 22 story building and 154 steps! Wow! Make a full day of it and visit the Liberty Island Museum and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. While taking all this in be sure to have your children earn their Junior Ranger badge through the Junior Ranger program. Just an extra way to make the day extra special.

Follow the trail through the gates of Field Station Dinosaurs and you forget you’re in Secaucus. Instead you’ve been transported to Jurassic Park, where you can go on safari and seek out dinosaurs large and small. Our explorations of Field Station Dinosaurs have come with encounters of over 30 animated robotic dinosaurs. We’ve even petted a few. There were performances by dinosaurs and paleontologists. At times we sang with the dinosaur troubadour. And if that wasn’t enough we even dig up dinosaur fossils. For the paleontologist wanna bees in your family a summer is not complete without an expedition to Field Station Dinosaurs.

Across the Hackensack River from Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, the Saw Mill Creek Wildlife Management Area is one of the largest and most ecologically diverse marshes in the Meadowlands District. It encompasses roughly 750 acres of wetlands, mudflats and open water between the eastern and western spurs of the New Jersey Turnpike. The canoe and kayak trail, is about 2.5 miles and is marked at key points with numbered, bright-blue signs. Take your time or speed paddle at a quicker pace, it’s up to you. The Saw Mill Creek takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on wind, currents, and your paddling pace.

The arboretum is a free hidden treasure within Hunterdon County. Beau-tiful trees and breathtaking scenery every where you turn. On the arbore-tum grounds you will find an alphabet garden, a wizard walk, two-story gazebo, rock garden, ponds and six short trails. One of the short trails has animal signs hidden with in it, where my children love playing “I Spy”. A small alphabet garden has letters hidden among the beautiful flowers and my son loves finding all the letters in his name. The gazebo is also great for imaginary play. Scattered among the trees you will find a few picnic tables where you can enjoy a small snack.

Round Valley has something for everyone. You can relax on the beach or maybe you prefer something a little more adventurous such as hiking or canoeing. The brisk blue waters of Round Valley Reservoir attract swimmers, boat-ers, fishermen, picnickers and campers to its scenic shore. Round Valley is one of the few parks that offers wilderness camping. The campsites on the eastern side of the reservoir are accessible only by hiking or boating. The park also offers hunting (waterfowl only), picnicking (picnic tables, picnic shelters), playground, food concession, boating / canoeing (electric motors, gas motors - 10 hp limit), trailer launch, cartop launch, no rentals available, swimming (reservoir), bathhouse, scuba and skin diving and trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Round Valley also has an amazing half mile loop bike trail perfect for introducing children to mountain biking.

There are 85 wilderness family campsites and wilderness tent sites with fire rings (no trailers and no vehicle access), drinking water and pit toilets are within walking distance. Access to campsites by boat, canoe or backpacking. Three-to six-mile hike from parking lot and from most facilities including swimming area. Each family site accommodates up to six people. Open April 1 – Oct. 31.

There is nothing better than spending a summer day at Terhune Orchards located in Lawrencville, NJ. Since 1975, the Mount Family has been providing family fun. The farm has so many great ways to spend your day. You can Pick-Your-Own vegetables, flow-ers and fruit starting in April and going all the way through the end of October. We’ve enjoyed many cherries, assorted berries, peaches, apples, and pumpkins from Terhune over the years. Every Tuesday morning, starting in May, Terhune hosts a “Read and Pick” program for children up to 8 years old. The program com-bines a story and activity that has a farm theme. Throughout the year, your family can enjoy themselves at one of Terhune’s many festivals. The annual Bunny Chase, Kite Day, and Fall Family Fun Days are only some of our favorites. No matter when you choose to enjoy your time at Terhune, there are farm staples your chil-dren will always remember. Terhune’s farm animals and pets, John Deere tractor bikes, and their famous Cider donuts will quickly become family favorites.

A sandy respite just off Route 9 in Old Bridge (Cliffwood), the Old Bridge Waterfront Park has a boardwalk, con-cession area, and playground. You can see the boats go off into the Raritan Bay, and there’s even a train that runs near by for your train enthusiasts! It suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy, but is in the process of being repaired and is still accessible (check for updates on the playground and fishing areas). I find it to be a great “get your toes in the sand” place, or a place to build a sandcastle without paying tolls or beach fees!

3 Great Ways to Spend a Summer Day in Middlesex County

One of the cutest spraygrounds I’ve seen - the Carteret Park and Sprayground is a great way to spend a hot summer day! With a fun musical theme, the sprayground had an attendant (in 2013) to keep order, and a good sized play-ground for drying off. Go a few miles toward the bay and check out the Carteret Waterfront Park and see what the fishermen are finding that day!

Gateway National Park, otherwise known as Sandy Hook, offers a variety of activities for families that extend past a day at the beach. While visitors can certainly enjoy a relaxing day at the beach, there are hiking trails to explore, Ranger Programs to learn from, a lighthouse to climb, and historic areas such as Fort Hancock to discover. Sandy Hook is also a great place for birding, fishing, and biking. There are even rustic campsites available for those who would like to spend the night.

Dorbrook Park in Colt’s Neck is the perfect place to head on a summer day. Enjoy a walk or bike ride along the paved trails, play a game of tennis or hoops, or play on the barrier free playground. The highlight of this park, how-ever, is the Sprayground. The kids will love splashing in the water-enhanced playground to cool off and have fun. If you have any energy left after a day at the park, be sure to stop at nearby Eastmont Orchards to pick some delicious fresh peaches!

On a scorching hot summer day when the energy is running low because the heat has just sweated it out of you, visit one of the splash pads located in Passaic County. Frank D. Zaccaria Memorial Park has a splash pad that has only been in existence since 2013. The 935 square foot space contains bright colors and a festive design that definitely welcomes the weary soul beaten down by the humidity. The splash park is not free and may have different requirements for those who are not residents.

Summer is about being outside whether it is a local park, playground, or pool. Sometimes in the smaller details of a simple activity we overlook how much fun they can be for the family. The opportunity to bond can come from a small game of golf, that is, miniature golf. Willowbrook Golf Center offers a great facility for miniature golf which the toddler, the novice, the school aged child, and even the tween can enjoy. You can opt for 18 or 36 holes in this space which contains waterfalls. It also makes a great space for a birthday party. If you want to steer away from the traditional miniature golf, then check out Monster Golf. The 18 hole range is filled with monsters and zombies and most people enjoy that it is glow in the dark. This is an indoor facility bit a great location if you are looking to go
