Intelligent Treatment Bone Marrow Transplantationfor

BMT is a medical procedure done to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem

cells. Bone Marrow is the soft fatty tissue inside the bones. Stem cells are the immature cells that reside in the

marrow giving rise to blood cells.

Blood diseases like leukemia, aplastic anemia, thalassemia etc

Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma

Childhood cancers like sarcomas, neuroblastoma

Autologus BMT: Auto means self. Stem cells are removed from the patient before the high dose chemotherapy

is given. After the chemotherapy, stem cells are given back intravenously.

Allogenic BMT: Stem cells are obtained from the donor. The donor must have the same genetic makeup as the

patient. Generally the brother or sister of the patient is most likely to be a good match. Special blood tests are

done to determine if a donor is a good match.

Umblical Cord Transplant: Stem cells removed from the umbilical cord immediately after the birth of the baby.

It will be stored and used as and when it is needed.

Complications depend on the underlying diseases, age, general conditions of the patient and the chemotherapy

or radiotherapy given before BMT. It also depends on the extent of the match of the donor stem cells, type of

BMT (Auto or Allo).

Complications include

BMT may completely cure the disease or sometimes partially control the diseases. When the transplant is

successful you can be back to your regular activities in a few months to one year.
