Al igual que otros animales con pezuas provistas de dedos pares, los berrendos son rumiantes, es decir,mastican comida parcialmente digerida. El alimento favorito de este veloz herbvoro es la hierba, la artemisa yotras plantas.

Los berrendos se aparean en otoo en las tierras ridas y abiertas del oeste de Norteamrica. Los machosforman harenes de hembras y los protegen celosamente, luchando a veces contra sus rivales en espectaculares y

peligrosas refriegas. En primavera, las hembras paren una o dos cras, que en pocos das podrn correr ms

rpido que un humano.

Los berrendos estn expuestos a la caza en gran parte de su territorio natural, pero algunas subespecies estn en

peligro.
