I am writing this in the first week of spring with several inches
of fresh snow on the ground. Unfortuntely, I will have to cancel
my oil change, alignment and brake flush scheduled for later this
week, as my car won’t touch the roads if any salt is any present.
Since the temperature is above 32, the snow is not sticking, but it
is still very depressing.
Regardless of the weather,
our schedule is filling
up. Check out the
webpage at ovrpca.org
and the listings here in the Bent Pylon
for exciting upcoming events. Our Driver
Education Event, to be held at Mid-Ohio
on the weekend of June 8th, is rapidly
filling up. Don’t wait to register for this
event, as it is sure to sell out.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of
attending the Zone 4 President’s meeting
in Perrysburg, Ohio. OVR is one of 12
Regions in Zone 4. The new Zone 4
Representative is Lori Schutz. She told
many fascinating stories and displayed
incredible pictures. I am hoping to have
her attend one of our monthly business
meetings to speak to the group, as it is
always beneficial to see how different
regions handle various events. Lori has
great energy and knowledge. I believe
she will be a positive force for our region.
Lori is the daughter of Peter Schutz who
ran Porsche AG from 1981 thru 1987.
He is recognized as the person who
prevented the elimination of the 911.
Our wonderful volunteers continue
to create and run events expertly. Our
region would not be successful without
their endeavors. Please thank them when
you can.
This winter weather will go away soon
and we will once again be enjoying our
cars on tours, autocrosses and Driver
Education events.
Don’t forget Cars and Coffee will be
starting back up in May, if not sooner.
Some popular social events, from the TAJ
to the Wine tasting, are also just around
the corner. See you soon and as they say
“keep the shiny side up! “
Thanks, Dennis

How To Register For OVR Events
Monthly Board Meeting Minutes March 13, 2018
Attending officers: Dennis Okin, President; Herb Beck, Treasurer; & Andrew Lautz, Secretary.
Attending committee chairs: Jeff Clark – Rally/Tour, Jeff Renner – Autocross, Tim Flora – Safety, Michael Herald – Concours, John Meyer – Past President, Steve Schultz – Membership, Fred & Ruth Zacharias – Bent Pylon Newsletter Editors.
Attending members and visitors: Sandi Beck, Ben Brinker, Ed Busam, Brian Butt, Alan Coleman, Russ Cramer, Don Gamble, Matt Hager, Bruce Harnish, John Huetcher, John Hutten, Ryaan Ibtisam, Nathan and Melody Keenan, Ed Mabe, Steve May, Susan Okin, Jerry Piccioni, Frank Robinson, Bruce Smith, Arizona Stafford, Mark and Frooz Thielking, Dan Tracey, Tony Watkins, & Jeff Woodard.
Call to Order at 6:57 PM by Dennis Okin. Acceptance of last month’s board meeting minutes approved on a motion by Dan Tracy and seconded by Tim Flora.
Welcome Members: Dennis Okin welcomed all attendees and our first-time board meeting attendee, Frank Robinson who drives a 6 speed 2011 997 and works for Delphi Delco. They make motor mounts for Porsche, Ferrari, and other car makers. He suggested conducting a tech session for our club. Thank you for your kind offer, Frank. Let’s talk further about when and where.
President’s report: Dennis Okin reported that he is participating in a zone meeting this coming weekend and will report back in April with some of what happened. He will participate in a National PCA board conference call with about 150 other PCA leaders. They have apparently budgeted $200,000 to refresh the national PCA web site.
Vice President’s report: In Bill Altvator’s absence, Dennis Okin reminded us of PCA insurance requirements that for any event with wheels either moving or up that we need to get insurance coverage. He requested that any holding these type events give the VP at lease 3 weeks’ notice.
Treasurer’s Report: Herb Beck, despite being in recovery from some eye surgery attended the meeting looking very much like a movie star with his incognito shades. Dennis Okin gave us financial status details and reported that the state of the club is strong. For detailed reporting please join us at the board meetings. Thanks for your faithful service to the club, Herb! We wish you a full and speedy recovery!
Secretary’s report: Andrew Lautz, yours truly, requested as usual that all present sign in on the Board Meeting Attendee’s sign in sheet. He also apologized for the shameless plug of his real estate business found with the sign in sheet. When he mentioned some of his tax strategies and his company’s sponsorship of his car at the HPDE events,
the always good natured but slightly unruly crowd stopped short of hurling things at him. Content with his apology, he yielded the floor back to Dennis.
Please visit our website: www.ovrpca.org for details and registration information on any of the events mentioned below and other great events for you and your Porsche. Thanks.
Committee Chair Reports
Autocross: Jeff Renner reported that this year we will sponsor autocross events in June, July and August at the Kentucky Speedway. He agreed to send out another e-mail blast.
Concours: Michael Herald reported on the upcoming HH Motorcars event on May 12. He believes that this Porsche restoration business is truly a hidden gem. He mentioned that he was amazed at the vehicles and that it’s a beautiful facility complete with an expresso machine and cold beverages.
Driver Education: Dennis Okin reported that we have 90 people registered so far for the Spring DE on June 8 and that the run groups are beginning to fill up. Please be advised that this year when you register we ask that you also pay for your event. Our system is now set up to cancel registrations unpaid within 7 days of your registration. We have special reduced rates when you mention the Porsche Club at both the Quality and Comfort Inns.
Historians: John Meyer filled in for Brent Fagan by stumping the crowd with trivia questions about a picture of an early “1969” 911T, complete with an offer of free use of John’s 1969 911 for the lucky person who knew why the pictured car was not a ’69 model. We were all stumped. The clues he gave revealed the expertise of a wizard, fitting for a past president having to do with wheel base and bent windows. It turns out it was a 1972 model so he will not be loaning out his prize vintage Porsche this month. Perhaps he will make a similar offer at the next board meeting.
Membership: Steve Schultz informed us that this month our club had 11 new members in February with 1 incoming transfer. We now have 909 primary members and 529 affiliate members for a total of 1,438 members.
Newsletter: Fred Zacharias requested any content by the 20th of the month. He also mentioned an eagerness to keep working on the “Have you met…?” feature, assuring those in attendance that your life is really not as boring as you might think and that those reading will take an interest. Please consider contacting him for information about featuring how you became afflicted with your interest in the Porsche brand.
Rally / Tour: Jeff Clark will start up the monthly Cars and Coffee in May unless the weather breaks earlier. Last year the tours were very successful. They are a
great way for newer members to meet other members and enjoy your Porsche’s driving experience in the countryside. He plans to, like last year have a full season and hold a rally or tour every month until October.
Safety: Tim Flora’s big news was the relaxation of National PCA’s prohibition of short pants and t-shirts for drivers at our Driver Education events. Many agreed that this would be a welcome change.
Old Business: Dennis Okin reported that Bill Altvater had approached Porsche King’s Auto Mall about renewing their OVRPCA sponsorship agreement. They believe that they will renew for another 3 years. We certainly appreciate Porsche King’s Auto Mall’s partnership with us and encourage the membership to do business with our sponsoring dealers.
The OVRPCA donated $6,000 to the Parkinson Support & Wellness Foundation. We received a thank you letter.
We also donated $6,000 to the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Our contributions over the last 10 years total about $50,000. We recently auctioned off a Porsche crest for $500 with the intention of the proceeds also being donated to the CTF. The treasurer will make that payment. We also received a thank you letter from CTF. Will put both letters in the Bent Pylon.
New Business: Dennis Okin mentioned a go-fund-me drive for a PCA member driving instructor in need of help with rehab and hospital bills. He suggested that we consider a $500 contribution. The idea was approved on a motion by Jerry Piccioni and seconded by Fred Zacharias. Agreement was unanimous.
Steve May reported on ongoing progress with his event at the Children’s Hospitals in which we would delight the patients with an offer for a ride in a Porsche. He brought two magazine quality flyers that looked great. He suggested that we could distribute the flyers in Children’s Hospital in Dayton and perhaps Cincinnati. Andrew Lautz met and introduced to Steve a physician with 20 years of relationships at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati with some willingness to help. We had discussion about whether the cars could be in motion or not and where we might be able to take the kids for rides. Bill Altvater apparently spoke with a PCA attorney who thought that with waivers signed we could ride in the parking lot at low speed. If you are interested in participating, please get in touch with Steve May at [email protected].
The meeting adjourned at 7:52 PM on a motion by Mike Herald and was seconded by Dan Tracey. Please join us at 6:00 PM for the social hour then at 7:00 PM for the board meetings each second Tuesday of the month at the Firehouse Grill in Blue Ash. We always have fun at this gathering.
Respectfully submitted. Andrew Lautz, Secretary.

TO CHANGE YOUR REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
PCA members may update their contact or registration
information on-line at www.pca.org. PCA will process
the change and will update the national database.
That database is used by PCA National and by the
Local Region to send informative emails announcing
local, regional, national and international events.
Updating contact or registration information may also
be accomplished by calling the PCA National Office at
410-381-0911, or by mailing changes to; PCA National
Headquarters, P.O. Box 6400, Columbia, MD 21045. If
you have any questions feel free to contact the Ohio
Valley Region Membership Chairman, Steve Schultz, at
TO LOG ON TO PCA.ORG: Your initial PCA log-in
ID is: your first initial, last name, and the last 4-digits
of your membership number, i.e. Sonny Jurgensen
member number 196400009 would log in as:
SJurgensen0009.
Jeff Woodard was working
with a sales group that
required everyone to come
into the office for a monthly
meeting. His daily driver
was an A6 wagon but he
would drive his 911, into
the office so he could enjoy
a spirited end-of-the-week afternoon drive. Following
one meeting, he was met in the parking lot by one of the
new guys who introduced himself as Mike Dreher. He
asked if Jeff was a PCA member. At the next monthly
meeting he gave Jeff a Bent Pylon and invited him over
to see his three 944’s. Jeff sent in the application the
following week.
In June of 1976 on the way out to Andrews Air Force
base he passed a beautiful dark green 911 with a tan
interior. Jeff had grown up around muscle cars and
the green car was something he’d not seen before.
Several weeks later in Annapolis, Md. where he had
seen the green car, he saw another, but this one was
red. His Father swears this never happened, but Jeff
recalls that his Dad tried to bribe him into accepting an
appointment to the Naval Academy. In return he would
buy Jeff a red car like the one in front of them. However,
he decided not to go to Annapolis and it would be 24
years before he bought himself that red car. One of the
selling points of the car was the Naval Academy sticker
that was (and still is) in the back window.
Jeff has owned only two Porsches, the original red
1984 Carrera and a 1986 turbo chassis grey track car.
His dream car would be a 962. In distant second, but
somewhat more realistic, would be the 2018 GT2 RS.
He ran quite a few autocrosses when he first joined the
club. However, it had been several years since his last
event, when, during his twice a yearly dental visit, Dr.
Greg Frese suggested that he try a track event. So, in
2007 he signed up for the OVR event at Putnam Park.
That morning his instructor did a few laps in the car
before turning it over to Jeff. After a caution flag lap he
came onto the front straight and got the green flag. It
took only one lap and he was hooked!

Greetings Zone 4 - I hope this finds you getting ready for spring, getting
the Porsche out and washed and buffed for the new season, and already
registered for a few events. Here is what I did while impatiently waiting for
nice weather.
During the 2nd weekend in March, many Zone 4 members journeyed south
for warmer weather and the 2018 Amelia Island Concours weekend. Through
bad weather, planes, trains and automobiles – we all arrived safely and
ready for some Porsche fun. I was part of Marci & Paul Thieme’s entourage
from Western Michigan Region as their Porsche 962 race car was invited to
the concours. We affectionately refer to their 962 as Mr. Miller since Miller
Highlife Beer is the primary sponsor of the gold, white and green livery. The
others in the crew were WMR PCA members Rick Riley, Chuck & Lynne
Olenyk, Bob Stander, former WMR members Dan & Neila Bird, and the
Thieme’s son Paul and
his wife Mary.
Mr. Miller won two
prestigious awards-
Corporate Award – The
Andial Trophy and an
Amelia Award – Grand
Touring Prototype.
The following weekend I was joined by representatives from every region
for the Zone 4 President’s meeting in Toledo, OH. Day 1 was focused on
PCA National updates presented by Cindy Jacisin, Executive Council
Secretary, Ron Carr,vv National Procedures Chair and remotely we got
a membership update from Minta Miller, our membership chair. Lori and
Cindy discussed the new Touring Minimum Standards and an update on
risk management and our insurance responsibilities. We enjoyed a great
exchange of ideas, plans for your regions, and great comradery. On Day
2 the focus was all about High Performance Driver Education events, and
we had the DE Chair or a delegate from the regions who are presenting
HPDE events this year, and some who might in the future. John Krecek, our
national DE chair joined us remotely to discuss the new resources available
to our regions, including a very fantastic track mapping presentation of Mid
Ohio Sports Car Course. Then Vicki Earnshaw, Porsche Club Racing Chair,
joined us remotely to discuss the transition from DE to Club Racing and
how we can promote the path with our qualified DE drivers.
I look forward to seeing all of you at events this spring. Drive safe and love
your Porsche!
Sincerely,
Lori
Marci and Paul Thieme with “Mr. Miller” and his 2 new trophies.
I met up with my good frieind, Hurley Haywood.

Unfortunately due to higher costs to
rent the track, we have raised our 2 day
student rate by $20 to $375, and our 3
day rate for advanced drivers by $10 to
$495. All instructor rates will stay the
same. To help offset these rate increases
OVR is buying an extra hour of run time for
Saturday which will be distributed among
all run groups.
Please note that those who had rented the
garages for the same event the previous
years have first rights on them. If you
have not rented before please send the
registrar an email requesting to be put on
the wait list.
We once again have secured great rates
with our hotel partners, the Quality Inn and
the Comfort Inn for $97 per night for either
a King or a Double. You must mention
OVR to get these rates.
Two important changes in
ClubRegistration.net will be in place
beginning this year:
1. When you register you must pay
within 7 days or your registration will be
automatically cancelled. You will then
have to contact the registrar to have
your registration status changed. You will
receive nightly emails explaining this if not
paid, until auto-cancelled.
2. Per Mid-Ohio, no duplicate car numbers
will be allowed unless the car is being
shared by 2 drivers. Whoever registers and
pays first has that car number if the car is
not being shared.
As in the past, those who register for the
event less than 30 days before the event
will pay an extra $50 registration fee.
We encourage everyone to register and
pay as soon as possible to both secure
your preferred car number and to avoid
this $50 charge.
OVR has been hosting driver education
events at Mid- Ohio for over 25 years. Our
events are known for safety first and fun
second and have been selling out for
years. We encourage you to register and
pay early to secure your place and car
number. We always welcome new drivers
and I would be more than happy to explain
our procedures over the phone.
NOTE: Newly revised clothing
requirements have been implemented
by PCA. You are now permitted to wear
shorts and short sleeved shirts for DE
events. However, closed-toe shoes, are
still required.
Registration for this event is now open at:
ClubRegistration.net. To date, over 90
entrants have already signed up.
Thank you and please let me know of any
questions.

The Ohio Valley Region / Porsche Club
of America will have three autocross sessions
in 2018 on Saturday mornings starting at

Speedway, 4760 Sparta Pike, Sparta, KY

For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun
and exciting way to drive your vehicle on a
small track against the clock, plus we have
instructors. Drivers will maneuver around a
cone-lined course with sharp curves, slaloms,
straightaways and tight handling situations. All
of this is accomplished in a safe and controlled
environment with one driver on course at a time.
Safety is the primary focus at an autocross.
There are a few changes for the 2018
season: an earlier start time of 8:00 am
and the entry fee is just $45 per driver.
Awards are given for Fastest Time in
Class, Fastest Time of the Day and,
at the annual meeting, year end
champions and other prizes.
Startup time on race day will
be 8:00 am, with registration, tech
inspections, track walk, morning briefing and
lunch break during corner worker time. This
schedule should allow us to wrap everything
up by 2:00 pm. We will also have un-timed fun
runs after 2:00 pm for anyone who wants to
extend their day. There will be a new course
layout that proves to be more challenging and
longer than our 2017 season course.
Autocross is an inexpensive way to gather with
like-minded people, push your driving limits,
learn about safe handling in your vehicle and
have fun. The events are open to drivers with a
valid driver’s license, Porsche not required. We
are hoping for more participation from other
car clubs in the surrounding area so feel free to
invite your friends and family. All manufacturers
are welcome! Last year we had some very
fast cars including Datsuns, Miatas, Corvettes,
Mercedes, Camaros, VWs, and Scions.

Autocrosses in upcoming issues of The Bent
Pylon. If you’re interested in autocross and
have questions, please contact:

The Spring Classic Driving Tour VI
presented by Diehl Insurance is ready to
roll across the countryside with several
dozen Porsches already entered by OVR
PCA members. As of right now on March
24 over 40 OVR PCA members have
registered at www.springclassicdrivingtour.
org including past presidents, region
Founder Jerry Wolf, Bent Pylon Editors,
club racers, autocrossers and track day
aficionados. The rolling car show will be
spectacular as we take to the byways on
Saturday Morning April 14, 2018.
The Live and Play Cincinnati.com Coffee
and Queue Up will have pastries and
beverages from the Branch Hill Coffee
Company available from 8 to 10 am as we
gather for the day’s activities. Upon arrival,
everyone must sign a waiver - drivers,
navigators and passengers. At this point
you will receive the driving instructions
and have time to explore the impromptu
car show that marks the beginning of the
fun. At 9:45 am drivers and navigators
attend the short safety meeting, return
to their cars and line up to depart on the
day’s adventure.
At 10 am the OVR PCA will be the first
group to leave the Amelia, Ohio gathering
point, keeping the cars from Stuttgart at
the front of the pack. The European Auto
Specialists Ltd. Driving Tour will explore
new roads and areas on the way to some
favorite stops including Miller’s Wheat
Ridge Market for Amish goodies, crafts,
and PIE if you take my recommendation.
An antique store will be the second stop
on the trail that includes fabulous scenery,
ridges, valleys, covered bridges and parts
of the John Hunt Morgan Heritage trail.
John Hunt Morgan was the Confederate
General that lead the infamous raid of
1863 that encircled Cincinnati and was
the only foray by the Rebels into union
territory (Lester Horwitz’ “The Longest
Raid” chronicles the history very well).
Roads that offer the opportunity to
explore all the systems engineered into
your Porsche like the butterflies in the
throttle, whether you have carburetors or
fuel injection, steering components, shift
linkage-clutch-gearbox, suspension and
of course, those legendary brakes that
Porsche is known for installing, will grace
your day.
The driving tour concludes with a long run
along the Ohio River, terminating in the
Village of New Richmond where the OVR
PCA will have reserved parking on Front
Street. The local pubs and restaurants
will be open for a beverage and bite of the
local cuisine. The Front Street Café will
anchor the celebration with the floating
Restaurant Skipper’s and the Green Kayak
also welcoming us.
New Richmond is a quaint village with a
number of historic sights: Underground
Railroad Stations, Riverboat Captain’s
Residences, antiques shops and a
fascinating walking tour to stretch those
legs after a fun day of driving through the
luscious southern Ohio country side.
Please register using the website:
www.springclasssicdrivingtour.org. Use
the “Contact Page” to send your name,
put OVR/PCA and other comments in the
“comment box.” It really is that simple.
Confirmation includes the map to the
departure point. We have room for many
more cars and there is also a need for
some of you to lead packs of cars to keep
the group going in the right direction and
allow everyone to enjoy their car without
being too bunched up. Invite your friends
to join the fun and bolster the efforts of the
Parkinson’s Wellness & Support and The
Children’s Tumor Foundation.

“Sometimes I think I would have enjoyed
racing more in the days of the friction damper. Since you
couldn’t do anything much to them or with
them. I would have spent a lot less time
being confused.” – Carroll Smith
Rich RosenbergTECH SESSION
Hopefully after you attend this tech session, things will be less confusing for you. The session will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, Inc., 8685 Bilstein Blvd., Hamilton, OH 45015 from 10am until noon.
Bilstein has graciously offered to host an OVR Tech Session at their headquarters which includes manufacturing and a R&D center in Hamilton Ohio. Bilstein has been associated with Porsche from the early air cooled days to the present. More recently Bilstein has been the OEM damper supplier for the Porsche 991, 993, 996 Turbos, as well as most Panamaras and Cayennes with adjustable dampers in addition to many other high end vehicles.
The OVR Tech Session will include a
tour of their manufacturing facility and the R&D department. We will be talking about the history of the dampers as well as the function and technology of the internal design. How magnetic fluid is used to change the damping characteristics of the shock for instance, will also be disscussed.
Interesting fact: In the testing facility the shocks are tested to the point of destruction and then disassembled to examine the wear to improve the longevity.
This should be extremely interesting and informative. You might even become more knowledgeable than Carroll Smith. There will also be some giveaways.
Those interested in attending please sign up in clubregistration.net. There is no restriction on the number of attendees, but we would like to have an idea of how many people will be attending.

D espite the pitiful bleating of
the weather clima-terrorists,
this weekend saw very little snow
and no rain, spring arrived and we’re
all the better for it. I’ve got bulbs
coming out of the ground, my maple
trees have huge red buds on them
the grass is starting to green up.
Mother Nature is in her glory and that
can only mean one thing to people
like us: time to release our cars from
their hibernation, fire them up and go
driving. As a group we have talked
about Cars and Coffee for years but
last year we pulled the trigger and
it was wonderful. Some weekends
dozens of cars show up, some
weekends not so much, but it still a
great gathering of the faithful.
This year we will again be meeting
at Tim Hortons in Maineville, right off
route 48. We meet at 9 am until 11
on the first and third Sunday of the
month. On this note I have gotten
a few emails and text messages
suggesting we change to the 1st
and 3rd Saturday morning instead
of Sunday as many of our members
have church on Sunday . I’m open to
either but if members wouldn’t mind
giving me some feedback about this
at: [email protected] If you
have an opinion either way please let
me know.
Cars and Coffee is a great way to
meet other OVR PCA’ers. It’s a very
low key thing, bring your spouse,
bring your kids. OVR President,
Dennis Okin and I will do our best
to introduce ourselves and welcome
you. If you’re a member and you
haven’t attended one of our events, I
encourage you to come out.
Looking forward to the first Sunday of
May!
Ohio Valley Region is once again proud to support our two primary charities: The
Parkinson Wellness Foundation and the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Each received
$6,000 from our organization. Over the past 7 plus years OVR has donated almost
$45,000 to the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
The OVR Board votes on this
each year.

O n May 12th the Ohio Valley Region PCA will be
teaming up with HH Motorcars to hold a Porsche
Showcase and Open House in northern Cincinnati.
The event will include a showcase of more than 40 Porsche
cars and an opportunity for all in attendance to tour this
hidden gem of a restoration facility where they breathe life
into vintage and classic Porsche cars.
Founded in 2012 as a small Porsche collection, HH
Motorcars has grown into a restoration business guided by
what they refer to as their “three pillars of best practices”
– organization, communication and proper restoration
techniques. Those pillars, coupled with their “alles passt”
– “everything in its correct place” – mentality, have taken
them to where they are today, a growing Porsche restoration
facility.
When speaking with the owners of HH Motorcar, it becomes
evident they share in the ‘”Porsche Passion” and believe
that owning a Porsche brings out the best practices in life.
When you break it down, they are Porsche enthusiasts who
appreciate Porsche’s passion for the best product and the
best practices.
This event is sure to become an instant classic and one we
hope members, friends and families will attend. The event
is open to everyone with no need to register to enjoy the
open house and facility tour. There will be plenty of unique
cars on display, an opportunity to learn what services HH
Motorcars offers and a food truck on site for those wanting
lunch.
For those OVR members interested in participating in the
show, please register via ClubRegistration.net to secure
a space. The show will include a People’s Choice award;
however, we would like to have all Porsche models and
conditions participate in the show.
Please contact me with any questions you may have. This
promises to be a wonderful event, rain or shine and we look
forward to seeing you there.
