Executive Summary

Demographics

Ben Johnson Elementary School is a small rural community. The school community has

a long rich tradition and history with many families having lived in the area for two and three

generations. The total enrollment, including Headstart/ Pre-School, is 250 students. Ben

Johnson Elementary School has a 66.4% free and reduced lunch rate and serves

approximately 13% of the students with some form of special education service. The average

classroom size is approximately 21 students. The school is broken up into 12 homeroom

classrooms. The 12 homeroom classrooms are broken up into 9 standard grade classrooms

and 3 split classrooms (Ex. Kindergarten/1st, 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th).

Mission Statement

The mission statement at Ben Johnson Elementary School was completed as a collaborative

effort among all stakeholders. After community surveys, Parent Teacher Organization, Site

Base Decision Making Council, staff, student, and teacher input the following mission

Unique Characteristics

The size of Ben Johnson Elementary School makes it unique and allows staff to know and

have a personal relationship with all students and their families. Ben Johnson Elementary

School Learning Community has a very close knit, almost family-like relationship. The

community is very proud of its history and traditions. Ben Johnson Elementary School also

faces challenges due to its size. Many times there are only one or two classrooms for each

grade or split classrooms with two grades. This makes it challenging for school staff in terms

of scheduling, planning, and collaborating with peers.

Overall Findings

The Kentucky Department of Education released test score and school and district

accountability data. Ben Johnson Elementary School earned an overall score of 68.7 out of

100 for the 2014-2015 school year and ranked in the 76th percentile in the state of Kentucky.

Our school has been classified as a Proficient school.

Opportunities for Growth

The Ben Johnson Elementary School Learning Community has been working diligently at

improvements to take Ben Johnson Elementary School back to the classification of a

distinguished school. The overall scores in Reading, Math, and the differential between the

general achievement score and GAP population showed clear signs of need and potential for

growth. Our learning community has already established a more developed intervention plan

to reach all students. We are also working hard within our Professional Learning Community

teams to focus on the “Big Four Questions”:

What do we want students to learn?

How do we know they have learned it?

What are we doing for the students who are struggling?

What are we doing for the students who already have mastered the content?

The Ben Johnson Elementary School Learning Community is a community filled with pride,

character, and excellence. Therefore, as we move further into this school year and the next,

Ben Johnson will continue to instill the idea that no dream is too big for our learning

community, and no dreamer is too small.

Process for Developing the Plan

A Red Flag Analysis of the 2015 Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-

PREP) was conducted first by the administration, and then reviewed with the faculty during

Professional Learning Community meetings. After reviewing the Kentucky Performance

Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP), goals were set by the faculty for each content

area. CSIP strategies were reviewed during committee meetings to determine which

strategies were part of our routine and could therefore be deleted. Committees, represented

by certified/classified personnel and parents, created new strategies based upon information

gained during the Red Flag Analysis. These strategies were then discussed during a faculty

meeting and reported to the SBDM Council.

Communication Plan

Copies of the CSIP were given to all SBDM members and certified staff. The plan will be

accessible on the district and school web page. Faculty members will review CSIP strategies

periodically and report progress toward reaching goals at faculty, PTO, and SBDM Council

meetings.

Expected Impact

The plan is expected to increase student achievement in all content areas, enhance the

learning environment for all stakeholders, and provide ongoing professional development for

teachers.

By May 2016, Ben Johnson Elementary will increase the reading score from 52.4% to 60.8%, math score from 52.4.0% to 66.1%, and 51.3% to 51.4%.

Student leadership qualities will be developed through four Student Leadership and Technology Team projects:

The LEAD (Leadership, Education, and Development) Team will develop habits of successful citizens by promoting Dr. Covey’s “7 Habits of Successful People” school-wide. LEAD members will also serve as members of the Student Leadership Council.

The BJES Journalism and Web Team will focus on making sure that school news is shared on the school website and updating information on the school website. The team will work jointly to create a school newspaper and create a 2015-2016 yearbook.

The BJES Photography Team will be taking pictures of all major school events to be shared via the school website, newspaper, and creating inspirational posters around the school.

The BJES Get Fit Breckinridge County Team will focus on implementing healthy initiatives in the school and community.
