Strategic FocusThe College has focused on several key areas for improvement in year four of its School Improvement Plan within the five spheres of:

Strategies run through all five years of the plan. A specific Annual Action Plan was developed for 2015 where the emphasis was on:
• Improvedfeedbacktoenhancestudentlearningespeciallyinrelation
tostudenttostudentandstafftostaff
• CatholicIdentityandServicewherekeyissuesaroundourcoreidentity
areexplored
• Collaborativepracticesespeciallyinrelationtoapeercoaching
modelwhichhasnowgainedtractionintheCollegeandbeing
furtherimplemented
• Developingmoresophisticatedmeansoftrackingstudentsforboth
pastoralandacademicprogress.
Senior Student Outcomes and Tertiary DestinationsVCEresultswereintheexpectedrangeforthecohortwithintheCollege.
ThereportonLearningandTeachinggivesgreaterdetailhoweverwewere
pleasedtohave9%ofourstudentsachieveastudyscoreof40ormore.A
relativelyhighnumberofstudentsachieved90ormore.Basedontheability
levelofthegroupwewerepleasedwiththeoutcome.

Pastoral CareTheCollegehasaverticalHousebasedsystemwithstudentsgatheringin
pastoralgroupsthatrepresenteachoftheyearlevels.Thisstructureserved
uswellinmeetingstudentwelfareandmanagementneeds,aswellas
fosteringasenseofsafety,security,belongingandconnectedness.
Housebasedactivitiestakeplacewherestudentleadershipisbasedonthe
premiseofservantleadership,withmodellingfromourolderboysthrough
totheyoungergroups.Mentoringofyoungstudentstakesplaceandasa
resultrelationshipshaveprosperedunderthismodel.
Co-Curricular ActivitiesTheCollegehasnumerousopportunitiesforstudentstoparticipateinout
ofclassactivities.Lastyearwehadanumberofinterstateandoverseas
tourswhichcoveredaspectsofsocialservice,language,history,politicsand
sport.Wesuccessfullycompetedinnumeroussportingandothercompetitions.
Therewereanumberofpremiershipsobtainedwithaseriesofhighresults
inacademiccompetitions.TheCollegewontheoverallawardforbest
sportingschoolintheAssociatedCatholicColleges(ACC)competition.
Onthewhole,Whitefriarsstudentsparticipatedinaverywiderangeof
co-curricularandsportingactivitiesinlargenumbersandwithconsiderable
enthusiasmandexpertise.Wehavemaintainedourcompulsorysports
afternoonsforYear7-10(TuesdaysandThursdays)andtheoptional
WednesdaysportafternoonforACCactivitiesinYears11and12.
In2015theCollegeconductedanumberofOutdoorLearningCampsfrom
Years7-11.Theserangedfromtwodaytofivedayexperiences.
Thelargearrayofmusicalofferings,includingorchestral,choir,ensemble
androckbandsallowedthestudentstonotonlylearntheirinstrumentof
choicebutalsoperformlivetoanumberofaudiences.TheBelieveinMusic
ConcertsforourCatholicfeederschools,theJazzSoireeandRockConcerts
werecomplementedbythehighlyprofessionalproductionofFame-
TheMusical.AlloftheseeventsreinforcetheemphasisonthePerforming
ArtswithintheCollege.
Housebasedeventsallowustoprovideallstudentswiththeopportunityto
leadorparticipateinactivitiesovertheyear.Studentsalsocontributetovarious
communityevents,especiallythosethatoccurwithintheCityofManningham.
EachHousegroupisassociatedwithalocalcharity.Inadditiontothisthe
CollegehasastrongassociationwithTimor-Lestewithmanyofourstaff
andstudentstravellingtoTimor-Lestemid-yearandduringthethirdterm
break.OurstaffofferprogramsinTheology,PhilosophyandEnglishforthe
youngTimoresestudentsbasedatHera,DiliandZumalai.Wehavealso
maintainedourlargeinvolvementindonationstotheRedCrossBloodBank.
CommunityServiceandWorkExperienceforYear10studentshasalsobeen
beneficialandprovidesastrongindicationofacommunitywillingtoshare
ofitselfanditsresources.
Aseriesofacademicenrichmentactivitiesprovidedthestudentswith
opportunitiessuchasScience,MathsandEnglishenrichmentfromYears
7-11;thesealongwithScienceClub,Chess,DebatingandtheEnvironment
ClubaresomeexamplesoftheofferingsatWhitefriars.
TheTransitionProgrambeginsinthemid-yearpriortoentrywithavisitation
toeveryYear6studentwithintheirownschoolsetting.Muchinformationis
collectedandsharedappropriatelytoenableasmoothcrossoverfromprimary
tosecondaryeducation.TheOrientationCampforYear7providesasense
ofbelongingandthisisreinforcedinsubsequentyearswiththeOutdoor
LearningPrograminYears8-10,thevoluntaryandwellattendedYear11
KairosretreatsandtheStudyCampforYear12.Thespiritual,socialand
emotionalneedsofthestudentshavebeenwellmetthroughsuchexperiences.

Satisfaction LevelsThe2015SchoolImprovementPlan(SIF)surveyresultsindicateareasfor
improvementandastrongsenseofoverallsatisfactionwiththeCollege
amongststakeholders.Parentsexpressedtheirhighdegreeofsupport
whilststudentswereclearlyoftheviewthattheirpastoralwelfarehasbeen
wellattendedtothisyear.
Parentresponseswereverypositive,indicatingstronglevelsofsatisfaction
withtheirrelationshipswithstaff,thecurricularandco-curricularprogram,
andthelevelofpastoralcareattheCollege,includingaverystrongview
thatstudentsaresafe.
Wecontinuetoseesomeneedtoimprovetheengagementlevelsofour
studentswithintheclassroom,especiallyasitrelatestotheMiddleYears
area.WehaveestablishedaYears7-9Committeetospecificallylookat
recommendationshere.
Stafffeltthatworklevelsweremanageable.Staffindicatedagoodlevelof
jobsatisfaction.
Studentsindicatedthattheyfeltconnectedtoschoolandthatstaffhad
theirinterestsatheart.Someindicationsofstudentswantingamore
interactiveclassroomwerepresentandthisrelatestoaspectsaroundthe
MiddleYears.Anoverallstudentattendancerateofjustover87%confirms
thissenseofconnection.OverallretentionratesforYears9-12andYearlevel
attendanceratesYears7-10areasfollows:
Studentabsenceisfollowedupbypastoralstaff.Clearproceduresarelisted
intheCollegediaryandonline.
Looking to the FutureTheCollegeimplementedthefourthofthefiveyearsofAnnualActionPlans
in2015.Whitefriarshasnowenteredintoafullaccreditationprocessforthe
CouncilofInternationalSchools(CIS).Wewerevisitedbyapanelwhocame
forthePreliminaryVisit,aprocessbyCIStoseewhethertheCollegehasthe
capacitytoengageinsucharigorousprocess.Wewerepleasedwiththe
reportwhichindicatedaclosealignmentbetweentheWhitefriarsMissionand
ValuesandtherealityoftheCollege.Withthisinmindwehavenowmoved
toafullyearofreviewwhichinvolvesstudents,staff,parentsandtheBoard.
Theseplansaredesignedtolookforwardwithasenseofgreathopeand
thoroughplanningwhichrespectsthosewhohavegonebeforeusand
buildsonthegiftsandtalentsofthecurrentWhitefriarscommunity.
Whitefriarsgraduatesneedtobepreparedforlifebeyondschooling.This
meansthatthespiritual,academicandaspirationalneedsofourstudentsare
paramount.Weaimtoassistfamilieswiththedevelopmentoftheirboysinto
‘gentlemen’whoarevirtuous,courageousandsacrificingintheirfuturelives.

InresponsetoourrecentlyattainedmembershiptotheCouncilofInternational
Schools(CIS)andanongoingcommitmenttoenrichmentoftheCarmelite

FourofthesedayswereavailabletoallstaffwithtworelatedtoourCatholic,

Professional Learning Day 2 – 27 MarchPre-Easter Faith and SpiritualityFollowingFrMichaelBrundell’searlierpresentationtostaff,hewasinvitedto
workwithusagainonthetopic,‘TheroleofwomeninChurch’withparticular
referencetoSaintTeresaofAvilaonthe500thanniversaryofherbirth.
FrMichaelbeganhispresentationwithreferencetosomeofthebrilliant
andcourageouswomenoftheOldTestamentandtheNewTestament
beforecontextualisingthelifeandworksofothers,fromtheearlychurch
andfinallythroughtoSaints,Teresa,EdithSteinandMaryMacKillop.
Professional Learning Day 3 – 24 AprilSchool Review (CIS) ThisProfessionalLearningDayinvolvedallteachingstaffengagingwiththenext
phaseoftheCISSchoolImprovementthroughAccreditation.Thedayincluded
feedbackontheCollegeAnnualActionPlan,reportsfromvarioussub-committees

Professional Learning Day 4 – 8 SeptemberPositive EducationAllstaffwereengagedinProfessionalLearningrelatedtoPositive
EducationanddevelopmentofaGrowthMindset.
ThefirstsessionwasaworkshoponPositiveEducation,facilitatedbymembers
ofthePositiveEducationCommittee.Thesecondsessionfocusedon
developingaGrowthMindsetandwasfacilitatedbyAnneliesHoogland
andBernNichollsfromEDUCAA.ThefinalsessionwasfacilitatedbyKayWatts
fromSmilingMind,amodernmeditationprogramforyoungpeople.Smiling
MindutilisesawebandApp-basedprogramdesignedtohelpbringbalance
toyounglives.Itisanot-for-profitinitiativebasedonaprocessthatprovides
asenseofclarity,calmandcontentment.Inpreparationforthissession,staff
wererequiredtodownloadtheSmilingMindAppontotheirphonesand
experimentwiththeavailablemindfulnessmeditationsbeforehand.
Professional Learning Day 5 – 19 OctoberStaff WellbeingThisProfessionalLearningDaytraditionallyhas‘StaffWellbeing’asitsfocus.
ThefirsthalfofthedayinvolvedallstaffworkingwithDrCraigHassedonboth
thetheoryandpracticeof‘mindfulness’,inclusiveofmindsets,executive
functioning,mentalhealth,communicationandempathy.CraigisaGeneral
PractitionerandSeniorLecturerintheMonashUniversityDepartmentof
GeneralPractice.Hehasbeeninstrumentalinintroducingavarietyof
innovationsintomedicaleducationandpracticewithanemphasisonthe
applicationofholistic,integrativeandmind-bodymedicineinmedicalpractice
andreconnectingdifferentknowledgesystems.Craig’sworkhasaparticular
focusonincorporatingmindfulness-basedstrategiesintohealth,professional
andeducationalenvironments.PartofCraig’sroleatMonashisasamindfulness
consultant,incorporatingmindfulnessprogramsforstaffandstudentsaround
theUniversity.Craighasalsopublishedsevenbooksonvariousaspectsof
‘mindfullearning’.
TheafternoonsessionwasorganisedbytheStaffWelfareCommitteeand
involvedaselectionofworkshopswithafocusonmindfulness.

Support for PD activitiesFunding and time release for teaching staffTheFederalGovernment’sTeacherEducationMinisterialAdvisoryGroup
(TEMAG)Reportwasreleasedon13February2015.Thisreportsupportsthe
needforwelltrainedandknowledgeableteacherstoprovidethefoundationfor
astrong,highqualityeducationsysteminAustralia.Qualityteachingisoneof
thekeystodrivingstudentoutcomes.
WhilsttheTEMAGreportfocusesonchangestoinitialteachereducation,all
currenteducationalresearchisconsistentinitsassertionsthatoneofthe
greatestcontributorstoimprovedstudentlearningiscontinuallyimproving
engagementandinstruction.Topperformingschoolsandschoolsystemsare
relentlessintheirfocusonimprovingthequalityofinstructionintheir
classrooms.Withthisinmind,ProfessionalLearningatWhitefriarsin2015has
strategicallyfocusedonthecontinuedgrowthofastrongercollegial,
collaborativeculturewiththeintentionofimprovingourteachingandlearning
throughsharedbestpractice.Consequently,therewerethreeareasof
underlyingfocusforProfessionalLearningthisyear:
Peer CoachingAcontinuingPeerCoachingprogramfoundedoncollegialtrust,respect
andcollaborationthat:encouragesexperimentationandoccasionalfailures;
endeavorstobeintolerantofmediocrity;fostersacultureofgenuine
evaluationandreflection;seekstofacilitatechangefromwithin,and
incorporatethedevelopmentanduseofskillssuchaslistening,
questioning,clarifyingandprovidingfeedback.Thisprogramnowhas40
stafftrainedasPeerCoaches.
Developing Middle Leadership CapacityAMiddleLeadersProgramforstaffwhoareeitherneworaspiringto
leadershipwasundertakenby18membersofstaff.“School leadership is
serious business. It takes a combination of clear personal values, persistence
against a lot of odds, emotional intelligence, thick skin and resiliency... Leaders
with moral purpose have deep commitment to raising the bar and closing the
gap for all students.”(Fullan2011).
