WOMAN HATERS Barrow Endangers Belizeans

From the Belly of the Beast!Brother of UDP Minister says Barrow is running “the country into the ground”

Belize City, August 27, 2015Hubert Elrington, the older brother of

Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington, launched torpedoes into the Barrow Administration’s mismanagement of the country when he appeared as the special guest on the Dickie Bradley Special show which aired on Channel 5 TV on Monday night this week.

Elrington, a former UDP member who served as Attorney General under the Esquiv-el regime, is known for his stern dislike and tough criticisms of UDP Leader Dean Barrow. Elrington was the political genius one who coined the term “all glitter and substance” for Barrow, a description which has stuck throughout the politicians’ record.

But his personal feelings aside, Elrington discussed the quantitative and qualitative ev-idence throughout the country which abun-dantly, overwhelmingly and ever-growingly shows that the Barrow Administration has been a miserable failure.

“This economy has been run into shambles. It does not even exist. We live because Venezuela gives us handouts ev-ery month. That’s how we survive. Where is the creativity? Where is the ingenuity? Where is the talent? Where is the ability? Where are the goods that we should be producing? Where are the resources that we should be creating? Where are they? Is that what they talk about in the National Assembly…when they go to Cabinet?” he stated.

Elrington held back no punches. He said the problem with the UDP Government is that it is being led by nincompoops in Cabinet.

“We can’t run the country with idiots in the Cabinet. It’s not possible. It can’t be done. How are you going to put idiots in your Cabinet? That cannot happen. It is an insult. If people who have no idea of af-fairs are appointed to the most important positions of state…no training, no ability, no experience, no insight, no nothing…then what are they getting paid for? They are getting paid to do foolishness, to run the country into the ground,” concluded El-rington.

Elrington is not the first to make this ob-servation.

Following the 2008 election and Barrow’s announcement of the Cabinet portfolios, the Amandala newspaper noted the lack of intel-lectual capacity in the Administration by say-ing that the UDP Cabinet was a “dodo bird Cabinet”.

The assertion was on target. Almost eight years later, the UDP Government’s scorecard is dismal and filled with the letter “F”. It is a dodo bird report card.

The results are stunning: Soaring debt, Skyrocketing cost of living, Struggling workforce, Stagnant incomes; High-levels of poverty; Failing banks, High crime and Rank corruption in office and much more.

In the eight years that Dean Barrow has presided as Prime Minister, he has refused to address economic issues comprehensive-ly. Normally, he avoids the discussion. In fact, the only time he made it a temporary focus was in 2011 when the economy went from the usual staggering to a flatine. The Prime Minister jumped on his feet and, copying U.S.

President Barack Obama, talked about an economic stimulus pack-age which never came to reality.

Belizeans must take heed at the warning given by Elrington: “The

country has no direction. We don’t know where the hell we’re going. I have never been so pessimistic. I don’t know where we’re going. We seem to be a ship without a rudder. You understand?”

Belizeans, it’s time to send the UDP idiots packing, or our country and people will continue to suffer serious consequences.

Venezuela’s VP visits to discuss territorial dispute

with Guyana

Dollar Diplomacy?

Belize City, August 22, 2015Belizeans have become very suspicious of Venezue-

la’s Vice President Jorge Arreaza’s visit to Belize last week.Arreaza arrived in Belize on Friday, August 21st with-

out any kind of fanfare or public announcement of his visit. In fact, the news of his visit spread fast and had become widely known before the Government’s Press Office is-sued a release at 6:36PM Friday evening broadcasting the news of the visit.

Of interest is that Arreaza’s sudden visit came just two days after Prime Minister Dean Barrow had declared at a press conference that his Administration stands in solidarity with Guyana in a recently resurrected territorial claim by the Venezuelan Government.

Officials in Guyana have expressed concern that their Caribbean counterparts have not re-acted to the attack on their territorial sovereignty, and have suggested that perhaps Venezuela’s dollar diplomacy, powered by the millions of Petrocaribe dollars, could be at play.

Indeed, Petrocaribe has become the life-blood of the Barrow Adminis-tration and their reckless borrow and spend agenda. Petrocaribe funds ev-erything for them – from the paving of streets, to bribing opposition members, to special junkets organised by political offices for UDP supporters.

Did Venezuela’s VP travel to Belize to convince the PM to switch support to Venezuela? Was the Petrocaribe pro-gramme used as a carrot? These are questions the Government’s release did not answer. And in this case, what was omitted is of more significance. Recognising that the statement would be monitored by Venezuela, the Gov-ernment opted not to reiterate its sup-port for Guyana; instead, it noted that the Prime Minister Barrow was encour-aged by Venezuela’s “reaching out”.

Recently paved street in Belmopan has exposed the

practice of poor quality work and wasteful spending

EDITORIALGuatemala Government in Turmoil…

so is Barrow’s

The Government of Guatemala is in trouble, deep trouble. It is rapidly falling apart, weeks before it’s general elections.

Each day sees Ministers rushing to re-sign and thousands of protestors taking to the streets.

Guatemala holds its first round of elections next month on the 6th of September. Their system of Gov-ernment is different from Belize. The elections are for a new President, new congressional leaders and for Mayors and Governors.

There are some fourteen different political parties which are fielding candidates. If the candidates do not receive a clear majority of votes, a second round of voting is held for those with the highest votes.

Guatemala has a more progressive electoral system than Belize in terms of its laws which set specific dates for elections. Also, a specific date and procedure for power to pass from the present President to the newly elected President.

So, although the elections are in September, October and November, the newly elected President will not take office until in January.

This system is similar as the United States of America. In Belize, a power-hungry Prime Minister can call

general elections at any time. On the night of elections the leader of the party that wins majority seats among the 31 constituencies becomes the new Prime Minister.

The Vice President of Guatemala Roxana Baldetti has been accused of massive corruption in finding ways to steal millions of dollars from their Customs Department.

This past week the Vice President was arrested for such criminal activities. In Belize, neither Boots Marti-nez, Edmund Castro or Elvin Penner have been arrested despite repeated allegations of wrong doings with public monies and scandals over lands, passports and visas, civil aviation funds and housing material.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington have been treating the Guatemalan claim to Belize as a private matter. They have been making deals with Guatemalan and signing agreements which are not fully disclosed to the Belizean people be-fore reaching any agreement.

None of these agreements have been introduced in

the House of Representatives of the Senate for public information and debate.

No Prime Minister or Foreign Minister has any authority to do what Barrow and Elrington have been doing in regards to Guatemala without going through proper procedures. This involves laying out in clear language to the Belizean people what is being done.

It also requires taking the matter to the National Assembly.

We reject Mr. Elrington and his Prime Minister’s arrogant and unheard of suggestion that because they were elected they do not need to consult the people of Belize on the Guatemala issue.

This is utter nonsense and displays an arrogant and unacceptable form of governance that is contrary to democratic government.

It is foreseeable that if the Prime Minister and his For-eign Minister do not immediately mend their ways the Opposition will withdraw entirely from any participa-tion in the Guatemala matters as it is being mishandled.

It is worth bearing in mind that an offensive and anti-democratic law was passed by the Prime Minister in which he essentially hijacked the Petrocaribe funds exclusively for UDP political propaganda projects.

These monies amounting to multi-million dollars’ worth of loans from Venezuela are being mismanaged without any of the acceptable Government protocols pertaining to tendering, invoicing, accountability and transparency.

The blatant abuse of such massive amounts of millions led the power-hungry Prime Minister to have broken the law and committed dozens of criminal offenses.

Frightened by the implications of being branded a criminal, the Prime Minister rushed through a hasty amendment law to cover his naked power and money grab move.

Now comes the revelation that every Tuesday of every week of every year the Belize Defence Force is confronted by Guatemalan Navy on the Belize side of the Sarstoon River.

How could such open aggression inside Belize ter-ritorial waters have gone on for so long and the Prime Minister and his Cabinet hide that from the nation and the world?

Working for Cayo West!!

in Corozalito and Primavera Villages

Dr. Lesbia Guerra-CocomBenque Viejo del Carmen, August 25, 2015

While the invisible elected UDP area represen-tative for Cayo West waits for borrowed Petrocaribe money to reach his desk to act on the needs of the people, PUP Standard Bearer Dr. Lesbia Guerra Cocom has naturally assumed the very important leadership role in the community.

Over the past weeks, Dr. Lesbia has been on the ground, meeting the residents and discussing the issues that have affected them.

Her visit to visit to Arenal Village, along with the communities of Corozalito and Primavera were wel-comed by the residents. During the visit, Dr. Lesbia shared out school supplies to every child, and carried out basic medical consultations for anyone in need of it.

Access to education and proper healthcare, even primary healthcare, are two of the most essential needs for the residents of Cayo West. But with all the Petrocaribe money rolling in for the UDP, they prefer to spend it in roundabouts and cement streets, instead of priority areas such as healthcare and education.

Dr. Lesbia told the BELIZE TIMES that the house to house visits will continue to gain the confidence of the residents that she can and will bring needed change to the neglect that the people of the constitu-ency have suffered under the UDP.

The Major Reports to Duty!

WOMAN IN THE HOUSE

This Sarstoon ThingBy Dolores Balderamos Garcia

I really cannot stomach listen-ing to anything that Foreign Minis-ter Hon. Sedi Elrington has to say these days. But I do admit that I watched a part of the Peacefest “Culture of Peace” program, which was sponsored by the Government and the Organization of American States, on television one evening. It was hard to miss, since at least five TV stations were carrying it live that night.

During the event Hon. Sedi proclaimed proudly that in 1981 Be-lize was able to attain our Indepen-dence with all of our national terri-tory intact. My immediate thought on hearing this was: “No thanks to you!!” It never ceases to amaze me the way this good gentleman has managed to botch virtually ev-ery utterance he makes. He has now once more outdone himself in saying that he would have to await

independent confirmation of the en-counter at the Sarstoon last week Sunday, unable, it seems, on his part to believe what over a hundred patri-otic Belizeans as well as members of various media houses told us had transpired. He seemed also unable to believe all the video footage which proved the belligerence and naked aggression of the Guatemalan navy. Senator Lisa Shoman was, I think, too kind in saying that Hon. Sedi’s stance is “unfortunate”.

Our own PUP Press Briefing on the Sarstoon incident was cogent and hard-hitting. I was particularly proud to see three of our women warriors of the Party at the head table in Independence Hall - Deputy Lead-er Carolyn Trench Sandiford, Senator Lisa, and Sylvia Gillett – along with Leader Francis Fonseca, and Majors Swazo and Jones. Of course Carolyn, Lisa and Sylvia went on the Sarstoon

visit, and they were able to share first hand the awful and unpleasant expe-rience.

Then came the “Let’s Do the Damage Control” Press Conference by the government the following day. All of a sudden, and no doubt under severe pressure, the Prime Minis-ter gagged Hon. Sedi and took over. He nervously swilled water around in his mouth. He kept shaking his left wrist to show off his latest solid gold timepiece. He employed all his usual long-winded verbiage. He an-nounced that he and his government will defend the Sarstoon Island to the death!! Yes, this from the leader of this government that have all but handed the Sarstoon Island over to Guatemala on a silver platter. I, for one, did not buy his spurious and convoluted argument about the BTV acting on a wrong premise.

The Prime Minister spoke with a forked tongue. How can an expedi-tion by brave Belizeans, doing what the Barrow government has clearly failed to do, that is to assert Belizean sovereignty over all of our national territory, be inspirational and foolhar-dy at the same time? All his iterations did not do anything to cover up the clear truth i.e. that this press confer-ence by him is really too little, too late. The attempted damage control did not work, and Belizeans are right-ly upset.

And I can say from the first hand account of my husband that the

Prime Minister did not tell the truth when he said that the boats were taking on water and everyone was frantically having to bail, giving the impression that they were sinking. The truth is that all the boats went and returned without any major in-cident. On one of the boats, appar-ently the bilge pump stopped work-ing, and so some amount of bailing had to be done to rid the inside of excess water. But at no time was any boat in any danger whatsoever of sinking. Had it been otherwise we would of course know.

This Sarstoon thing is a serious thing. How can the missteps of this clearly bungling and incompe-tent administration be straightened out? And the Prime Minister made some interesting revelations at the press conference. It looks like it is nothing new that Guatemala has been acting in a most unfriend-ly and un-neighborly way towards the Belizean armed forces. Where have the protests from the Barrow administration been? Only because of the bold actions of the Territorial Volunteers and other friends has a squeamish Barrow been forced to respond. And by the way, a great cartoon for the BELIZE TIMES, if it has not been thought of already, would be a captionless drawing of the officials at the head table of the Barrow press briefing showing Hon. Sedi with a big piece of tape over his mouth. Serious.

The Blue Machine on the Rise!Belize City, August 26, 2015

Whenever there is any mobilization on the part of the People’s United Par-ty it causes grave concern within the camps of the United Democratic Party.

The “Power to the People” tour has been such an event. People’s United Party leader Francis Fonseca and cham-pion of the good people of Freetown has taken the time to engage with the people across the nation of Belize – from the proud Rio Hondo to the Old Sarstoon. The tour is considered a con-sultation endeavour in conformity with the great motto of the PUP – Serve The People!

The People’s United Party under the leadership of its leader has its sights set on winning the upcoming General Elec-tions whenever Dean Barrow dares to call it! The fact is that the People’s Unit-ed Party knows how to win election and it is without a doubt that the Blue Ma-chine is on the rise again. Like the Reg-gae sensation “The Itals” said “Don’t mess with the Lion when he is awake for he will eat you to the bone”. The Lion within the PUP has awakened and no petty propaganda will detract from the agenda of holding the UDP in the cross-hairs when the Election is called.

The Party as a family will become unified in the process of rebuilding, re-organising and the restoring the trust and confidence of the Belizean citizen-ry. This mighty Party STILL stands firm to become the people’s champion in their struggle and aspirations in making Belize stronger, more peaceful and se-cured nation with sustained economic growth and development.

The PUP’s desire is to make Belize not only a just society but a more egali-tarian society where the trumpet will be sounded to the tune “I am my brother’s keeper”. Party Leader Hon. Francis Fon-seca has pledged to restore the princi-

ples of social democracy which is not only vital to political stability, but true development of people in the Land of the Free.

The Leadership will continue to build on the legacy of the Father of the Na-tion, Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price, who brought Belize from under the yoke of colonialism and transformed the coun-try Belize into an independent nation recognised by the world community.

Hon. Francis has pledged to bring to swift effect the necessary reforms to take Belize to the majestic heights that

the Jewel and its people deserve. The Hon. Said Musa has pointed

out eloquently that “Nations are des-tined to be led by those who rise above the ordinary and strive to be extraordinary. The frailties of the human conditions prevent us from being perfect. Decisions made for the good of all will oftentimes not meet the expectations or approval of many, yet we soldier on to make life better for (most), knowing that though we strive to walk in the path of angels, we remain human”.

Just like the Eagles, the PUP will be triumphant “that is Their nature, They soar through the storms, when lesser souls have taken cover…They laugh at the furies of the winds, while others quake in fear. They win, for that is their nature”.

The victory will emanate from the great motto of the People’s United Party – Serve the People!

That is the calling of the great Blue Party – to become servants of the peo-ple and truly a government for all – Pow-er to the People!!

Petrocaribe Party Done!!Belize City, August 26, 2015

Since 2012 the Dean Barrow UDP government have been running the country of Belize economy on ‘bar-rowed’ and risky funds. Well the chicken has come home to roost. All right-think-ing economists have been advising the Belize government that they have be-come extremely dependent on the Pet-ro Caribe loan funds.

What the UDP government should have done over the last eight (8) years was to ensure that they grow the econ-omy and attract Foreign Direct Invest-ments (FDI) as well instil confidence in the Belizeans people to invest their earnings. But foreign investments dwindled by almost 80% since the UDP Government took office and there is no visible plan to improve it.

Since the start of the year (2015) the price for crude oil on the world market has been dropping significantly and for months has been below US$50.00 per barrel. Today it is US$33.00 per barrel.

This will begin to affect the Beliz-

ean economy directly because under the Petro Caribe agreement signed by the government in 2012, full payment (100%) of the fuel from Venezuela within ninety (90) days after receipt of the fuel shipment (RBC Caribbean Group Econ-omist-Marla Dukhran) is

required. That is so because once the

crude oil price dips below US$50.00 per barrel, the Belize government has to pay for the entire shipment of the fuel upfront. Therefore for months the government of Belize has with held this important infor-mation from the Belizean people. The truth is the Petro Caribe party is over.

Worsening economic factors will press the UDP to call the elec-tion this year. Experts predict that the cost of fuel on the world market

Venezuela faces political instability. Petrocaribe payments are needed

to keep their economy going.

Belize’s top military officers, Belize Defence Force Brigadier General David Jones and Coast Guard commander Admiral John Borland, sent the wrong signal when they placed their credi-bility on the line and made an ill-advised appear-ance on the UDP’s political show, Wus Ting Da Mawning, on Wave Radio last week Thursday along with Minister of National Security John Saldivar and the two UDP empty-heads Joe and Fonso.

This was a day after Jones and Borland sat next to the Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Saldivar and embattled Foreign Minister Sedi Elrington, and wilfully entangled themselves in the same bed sheet that the Barrow Administration is us-ing to cover their misdeeds.

Jones and Borland both chose to follow the Prime Minister’s directive to deny over 150 Belize Territorial Volunteers any form of security during their August 16th 2015 visit to the Sars-toon River area.

Jones and Borland, like the Prime Minister, have been aware that Guatemala’s military has seized Sarstoon Island and have denied BDF and Coast Guard officers access to the Sarstoon wa-ters without surveillance and supervision.

Jones confirmed that his officers are fol-lowed by Guatemalan military boats whenever they travel to through Belize’s Sarstoon river channel to the Cadenas outpost in Belize, also known as the “Gracias a Dios” border marker. He said the Guatemalan military has even inten-sified their aggression towards them with intimi-dation tactics such as ramming their boats.

Borland and his Coast Guard personnel have also experienced Guatemala’s aggression first hand. While on a site visit on Sarstoon Island in May, one of their vessels was interrupted by Guatemala’s armed navy and instructed to leave.

The Coast Guard stood their ground until Prime Minister Dean Barrow intervened and, in-stead of defending out military officers, instruct-ed that they stand down.

Jones and Borland are on the front line of Belize’s defense policy and they know well how terribly the Barrow Administration is managing the important affairs. Yet they refuse to challenge the Government’s direction.

Instead, they defend the Government and risk their credibility.

To see Jones and Borland next to Joe and Fonso and the disgraceful UDP flag in the back-ground “crawled” Belizeans’ blood.

It was an offensive sight. Military men and politics don’t mix.

Even hosts of Plus TV Rise and Shine Louis Wade and Krem Radio Wake Up Belize morn-ing show Mose Hyde were offended and con-demned the military personnel’s sitting on a po-litical show.

Outspoken activist Audrey Matura Shepherd also made her views known in a phone call into the WUB show on Monday morning this week, expressing concern that Jones and Borland may appear “beholden to the politicians”.

On Wednesday morning, Major (Retired) Gil-bert Swazo continued the debate and discussion on the issue, explaining that the military leaders should be aware that protocol prohibits them from appearing politically bias.

“The commander needs to remain pro-fessional and not dabble in politics and he needs to recuse himself from anything that appears political,” he declared.

He also challenged his colleagues to “main-tain professional, even if it means that you

will resign or be terminated for your stance”.

Jones and Borland are undoubt-edly two of Belize’s most intelligent men; that they have reached the highest positions in the military is proof of this. It is in their best inter-est not to be part of any UDP dog and pony show. It’s not worth it Ma-jors.

BYM supports UB decision to recall mandatory insurance fee

August 24, 2015The Belize Youth Movement, the

youth arm of the People’s United Party, congratulates the students of the Univer-sity of Belize (UB) for their efforts which have resulted in the cancellation of the unfair mandatory insurance scheme for students.

At a student forum held last week Thursday August 20, 2015 in Belize City, University of Belize President Alan Slusher announced that the University would no longer impose the insurance fee on stu-dents and would instead make it optional.

This is a great victory for the students who spoke out against the unfair scheme and who attended the forums held throughout the campuses to make their discontent known.

We reiterate that the idea of providing affordable insurance for students is wor-thy, but it should not be mandatory and a requirement for student registration. In fact, we believe that the University should provide insurance to students who formal-ly represent the University at sports com-

August 25, 2015On Thursday August 20th, mem-

bers of the Marshalls joined Party Leader Hon. Francis Fonseca, former PM Hon. Said Musa, and Belize Rural South Standard Bearer Elito Arceo, in paying homage and respect to a loyal member, supporter, fighter and a true dedicated soldier of the People’s Unit-ed Party: Mr. Milo Paz Sr.

On Friday August 21st, through ef-forts and hard work of San Pedro Mar-shalls and Standard Bearer Elito Arceo, 15 gallons of paint, rollers and brushes were presented to the principal of the San Pedro Roman Catholic School. This donation was a continuing effort of ser-vice to the community and people, to help to improve the school’s environ-ment.

On Saturday August 22nd, Nation-al President Stephen Latchman trav-elled to Dangriga to participate in a membership meeting. Under the able leadership of newly elected coordina-tor, Mr Francis Flores, a very spirited meeting was held. The group has com-mitted to a meeting on August 29th to plan a fund-raiser for a burial plan for its members as well as to chart a calendar of events and activities. Present at the meeting, and lending his full support and cooperation was Mr. Anthony Sa-bal, Standard Bearer.

On Sunday August 23rd National President joined other Marshalls in their participation in the Power to the People Tour held in the village of Hopkins in the Stann Creek West Division.

Later this month, the PUP Mar-shalls of Orange Walk will be contrib-uting to the improvement of the Sandy

Field Park in Orange Walk Town. Their ef-forts will include planting of trees as well as installing children friendly amenities.

As the work continues, we look for-ward to the future with much excitement and hope, as we remain busy, planning and executing our upcoming events for

petitions and other official events.

We discourage any at-tempt to make the cost of education at our na-tional university any more burdensome than it already is. We also challenge the Board and Management of the University to find ways of making educa-tion more affordable, starting with a proper review of the cost and fees at the University, of which some are irrel-evant and simply meant to pick the pockets of Belizean families.

The Belize Youth Movement will contin-ue to stand in solidarity with our students and remain vigilant and vo-cal on their behalf.

Continued from page 2ers from the faculty had applied and the post was even advertised exter-nally. Of course she got the position. Is this a reward? The faculty rep had indicated that she voted yes for the new President which had upset the UB community.

Mrs. Leolin Castillo was the “Interim” Dean for the Faculty of Nursing, Allied Health and Social Work. Other faculties also had Inter-im Deans. So that post should have been advertised like the others. Ac-cording to the UB notice, the posi-tion was “offered” to Mrs. Castillo by the Board in 2014. This announce-ment is being made eight months into 2015.

This gives the perception that the university is being run by “favou-ritism”. Faculty and staff have been complaining about this for a long time. Obviously, protocol is thrown out the window at UB. So, it seems like not much change is taking place at UB. This is shameful of our nation-al university. What ethical values is UB promoting to the students and to the nation on a whole? How do Management and the Board expect the quality and delivery of teaching to improve with low faculty morale?

OUT

From the Belly of the Beast!Flippin Resigns from UDP; cites Corruption and Victimization!!

Belize City, August 26, 2015The UDP dolly house is crum-

bling!Dean Barrow – known for his

bossy and bullyish, disrespectful, selfish, petty and vindictive style of leadership – is causing UDPs to turn away from that political par-ty or to join ranks with the grow-ing numbers plotting to bring him down before absolute power leads to madness.

Tired of the disrespect from within the ruling party, senior UDP member and former six-time Stann Creek West representative, Melvin “Flippin” Hulse, announced on live television on Wednesday morning that he was resigning.

“I never expect the day mi wa come when I had to say, as of now, as of today, I am officially no member of the UDP party; I resign from the party. And I want to be an independent free think-er who; if he sees any injustice or anything,” expressed Flippin Hulse on the LOVE FM morning show.

Hulse said that there are many reasons for his departure, but the main issue is that the UDP Govern-ment has not addressed the needs of the people in Stann Creek West. In fact, he said that the requests for assistance that he delivered to the various ministries have been ig-nored and neglected to spite him.

“We got no Christmas Cheer, we got no Mother’s day Cheer in Stann Creek West because we are not happy with Hulse, so 30,000 people, 23 villages have tough luck. I have a problem with that, I have an opinion and if we disagree you are then os-tracized, you go to the Ministry and because I am not active in politics, ‘no no no you’re not in play’. What do you mean I’m not in play,” Hulse complained bitterly.

He continued, “People can’t get their purchase price, can’t get their title. I have people who have paid for their title years ago; can’t get lease, can’t get that, can’t get education help, can’t get electricity, can’t get pipe for water expansion. That da noh weh this country is about you know”.

In the statement above alone,

Hulse called out the failures of three Ministers: Gaspar Vega (Lands), Patrick Faber (Education) and Godwin Hulse (Rural Develop-ment).

Hulse said the quarrelling with his Party was over. “…we’re on a different page,” he remarked, also warning, or as he put it “sensitiz-ing” his former UDP colleagues that if he sees any injustice taking place he will speak out. “Because a lot has happened over the past 7 years you know,” he said men-acingly.

In June, Melvin Hulse, while being the elected Standard Bearer for Stann Creek West, made head-line news when a recording was leaked of him making disparaging statements against Dean Barrow as leader of the UDP. Hulse re-vealed that the UDP was spending

millions of dollars to bribe and buy-out PUPs and manufacture rigged bi-elections to gain power. He also described Barrow as “arrogant” and a “dictator” who only cares about himself and to go down in the histo-ry books as the only Prime Minister to win three terms.

Barrow threatened to sue Hulse for libel, but later recanted, claiming that no one would believe the dis-gruntled politician because he was not part of any “UDP inner circle”.

“I know Melvin Hulse and I’ve known him for years and years…he loves to mouth off and when

he is disgruntled he will mouth off even more and so I certainly hold absolutely nothing against him for what he said,” said Barrow in a June 26th interview.

Within days, Hulse was forced to resign as Standard Bearer and apologize to Barrow and the UDP. In an unsigned statement purportedly released by Hulse, the notion was given that he and the UDP would be working things out, but a few weeks later it is clear that the relationship only became more toxic.

Reid

By G. Michael ReidPrime Minister Dean Barrow

once warned his team of Idiots (But-ty’s term, not mine) that if anything could bring down his government it would be corruption in Immigration. Well, I believe that he was at least half right. Belizeans seem to have become quite tolerant of and very comfortable with corruption but im-migration seems the bigger prob-lem; immigration in particular, as it relates to the large influx of people from neighboring Guatemala.

Section 29:3 of Part 3 of our Constitution states specifically that: “No person shall be entitled under the provisions of this Part to be a citizen of Belize or be grant-ed citizenship of Belize if such per-son shows any allegiance to or is a citizen of a country which does not recognize the independence, sovereignty or territorial integrity of Belize”. Appended to this partic-ular section is an addendum which reads: “Provided that the Minister may in his discretion grant Belizean citizenship to persons falling under this subsection who would other-wise been titled to such citizenship under the provisions of sections 23 and 25 of this Constitution”.

Interestingly enough, while these ministers have used this ad-dendum to Section 29 as justifica-tion for their actions, both Section 23 and 25 are specific as to who “would otherwise been titled to such citizenship”. It does not give legality to nationalization of Guate-malans. The nationalization of just about every Guatemalans since Independence is, for all intents and purposes, unconstitutional and therefore illegal.

With general elections loom-ing on the horizon, the traffic at the Immigration Department has picked up considerably. It is time for a moratorium on all new citizens for at least three months before

any election. This process is being misused and abused and poses a direct threat to our democracy. The free movement of what is, for the most part, unskilled labor puts a huge strain on not only our employ-ment opportunities but also our ed-ucation and other social services. Recently, the KHMH complained of a shortage of beds and medicine to provide adequate health care for our people. Just a brief stop at any of our clinics and health centers and one can see why. While I would not be in favor of denying any child an education, we must understand that charity begins at home. Not only do those who come over bring their children but many in Melchor and other border towns send their children over to be educated. Since one’s first responsibility is for the

ner was caught on camera facilitat-ing and expediting the process of pushing through many Guatema-lans for citizenship. When inter-viewed, he admitted that, “... there is a political reason behind it. We want to get out voters in. I won’t deny that any at all. I would wish that every politician in the coun-try would do that because this really proves that you are push-ing and going the extra mile for you to win your division.” Penner himself won by a mere 17 votes and was it not for those hundreds of forced ripe voters; the 2012 elec-tions would have had a different outcome.

Penner was eventually exposed but was given full immunity from any type of prosecution. Several other members of the UDP were implicated in a widespread immi-gration hustle but that was as usu-al, glossed over and swept under the proverbial rug. This is an issue that still gnaws at the craw of the Belizean people. How can this man continue to collect our taxpayers’ dollars and hereafter be paid a pen-sion for life? This is insult to injury and salt rubbed deeply into this wound; Elvin Penner should be in

jail!The recent political develop-

ment in Guatemala also requires close monitoring. On the eve of elections slated for next month, daily riots have been occurring and are increasing as people no longer seem willing to accept the widespread corruption that has plagued that country for de-cades. On May 8th of this year,

Wake up Belize!

I believe it time for us to implement a full-fledged boycott of all things Guatemalan. We should not

buy any products from Guatemala; do any business with any Guatemalan company and discontinue any type of sporting or other ac-tivities with that country. We certainly should stop this nationalization of Guatemalans.

needs of one’s own family and friends it is not charity but fatuity for us to continue opening ourselves to those who do not consider them-selves our friends.

Given the existing conditions where Guatemala has ratcheted up not only it’s rhetoric but also their activity on our borders, it is impera-tive that we take a closer look at this practice. There is an article in this Tuesday’s Amandala about a group of Guatemalans attacking Belizean shoppers in Melchor. While the full story of what transpired is not alto-gether clear, this might be exactly what we need to get the sense. It is ridiculous for Belizeans to contin-ue taking their hard earned dollars across the border to support busi-nesses in a country “which does not recognize the independence, sovereignty or territorial integrity of Belize”. I believe it time for us to im-plement a full-fledged boycott of all things Guatemalan. We should not buy any products from Guatemala; do any business with any Guatema-lan company and discontinue any type of sporting or other activities with that country. We certainly should stop this nationalization of Guatemalans.

In January of 2012, Elvin Pen-

Vice President Roxana Baldetti was forced to resign but that has done little to quell the an-ger of the people. The call is for President Otto Pérez Molina to also resign. There are a lot of similarities between what is causing the unrest in Guatema-la and what has been occurring in our own country and without a doubt; a number of our politi-cians must be getting very ner-vous.

In April of this year, a Unit-ed Nations-backed unit, the In-ternational Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) began releasing results of in-vestigations which has pulled back the curtain on corruption in that country; much of it ap-parently state sanctioned. The investigations have uncovered a bribery scheme where high-lev-el officials had been lowering custom duties for certain import-ers in exchange for kickbacks. The scheme, known as La Linea (The Line), involved high level officials who were netting millions every year while “state institutions lacked important resources for medicine, education, and basic

security”. CIGIC also un-covered corruption with-in Guatemala’s Social Security Institute (IGSS) where that institution, in one instance, gave special treatment to a pharmaceutical com-pany in exchange for kickbacks to members of the board. That inves-tigation has resulted in the arrest of the gover-

nor of their central bank chief and the entire Social Security board. Can someone give these people a call please and invite them to Belize! Belizeans are advised to remain aware of what is develop-ing in Guatemala. When the time comes, we ourselves must take our stand against corruption. It is time for the interest of the people to become paramount!

Cornelio Acosta Sr.Eulogy for former PUP Mayor

Read by Hon. John Briceño, Former PUP LeaderCorozal Town24 August 2015

I can try in the next few minutes to deliver a eulogy that hopefully would celebrate the life of your husband, your dad, your brother, tio and our friend, but to do that would mean that we would be here for days and you know Corne-lio would rather we be singing with Re-nan’s Karaoke machine than making too much fuss with speeches.

Plus each and every one of us has our own special eulogy we could deliver about the Cornelio we knew.

There are just too many great sto-ries and I hope that over time we will get to share them with you and with each other, for when we do, we keep Cornelio alive in our hearts and minds.

So instead of a eulogy, I want to use my time today first to say to you, his family, thank you for sharing Corne-lio with us. He was a good man, loved by all of us here whether we were his neighbour, friend, co-worker or a PUP and yes many UDP’s too, but not around election time. For when it came to his Party we all know Cornelio was a warrior in Blue.

However we came to know Corne-lio Manuel, we knew a man of character, who loved his family; loved his country and who really cared about people.

I think he got this quality to care for others from early in life. You can tell this from the kind of family he was brought up in. The Acosta family is well loved in this community and people who knew Mr. Fidencio Sr. and Miss Anita will tell you they gave their best for their chil-dren.

Like his parents Cornelio did the same for his family every day. Fidencio Jr, Jaime and Carlos talked about him as a person who from very young was devoted to whatever he was doing. That devotion to family, which he learned at home, was obvious to us. He talked endlessly about Velia. Those of us who were closer to him know that from the time he was a student at Xavier he was following her around. Velia said it start-ed out as just a friendship and then next thing you know he was walking her home from school in the evenings. They dated for a year and in 1980 got mar-ried, a marriage which lasted 35 years and produced these four beautiful chil-dren.

I am sure the four of you know that your father loved you from the moment you opened your eyes until the day he closed his. We know this because Cornelio would go on and on about his children. Oh he was so proud and hap-py to hand Cornello Jr. his diploma the day he graduated from Corozal Junior College. And each time one of you did something he thought was special, he would go on and on and that twinkle would show up in his eyes. His children were the great joy of his life, that was of course until the grandchildren came and then it was on and on about them. He truly loved his family and together with Velia dedicated his life to caring for each

and every one of them. The last time I saw Cornelio alive

was on Friday afternoon when I sat right next to him at Narda’s house. When I think back on it now, I am glad we got to spend that little time together. When I saw him he had that little twinkle in his eyes. We were here in Corozal to talk politics. Nothing perked up Cornelio’s spirit like politics. He was a “uniter”, al-ways working to bring people together in our party. And he was never afraid to take a blow for his PUP. You know Cornelio served for 13 years at BTL. He lost his job because of politics and never once did he complain. He picked himself up and worked harder for his beloved PUP. Of course for him politics meant the Bay. Vildo could fill our heads with stories of Cornelio and the PUP in the Bay. One of his closest confidants, Cornelio, served as his devoted chair-man for three terms and when Vildo left electoral politics, Cornelio was there for and with Papas to the very end. Pa-pas has lost his mentor, one of his best campaign strategists and his friend. Cornelio’s devotion to the PUP and his work in the Bay came from his love of his community and his country.

When you think of Cornelio’s pro-fessional career, like his political work, you can see in his footprints, a man of service; always giving of himself to others. He was your Mayor here in Corozal for two years and started the beautification of the Bay. He worked in the Corozal Free Zone, like I said at BTL, and he worked up to Saturday morning at Smart, each day going to work ready to do what was required and more than his fair share. Helping in every way he could.

Of course we all know there was this other side to Cornelio, this fun side. We know of his devotion to football and to the Mexican team America and to sports in general. He loved it when he had Cornelio Jr. and his friends around during football matches.

Then there was the karaoke. Corne-lio would not be able to resist the kara-oke joints around town. In fact Renan tells me just hours before he suffered that fatal heart attack on Saturday they were planning to meet up for karaoke later that evening. I don’t think he ever

got paid for singing, but that never held him back from picking up the mic.

I cannot lie to you; my heart is very heavy today. I can only imagine the weight that Veila and the kids must feel at this time.

Still, they want me to say to each of you here today, to all those many people who called, stopped by and to those who posted kind words on Facebook how much they appreciate you and thank you.

Words are difficult to say at this moment, but we carry each other in these difficult times by the love we show.

Jesus said in the beatitudes,

blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.

To the family of Cornelio Manuel Acosta, I say you were blessed to have a husband, father, brother and grand-father like yours. Be comforted by the memories and the love he gave so abundantly to you.

Please know that we all mourn with you, for we too lost a friend, a confidant, a dedicated co-worker, a Party member and a good man.

We too will carry him in our hearts and until that day when our time comes we bid him adios and say, rest well dear brother. Most important, we give thanks for the short yet wonderful life of our dear Cornelio.

Belize City, August 24 2015Belize’s true Reggae Ambassador,

Ras Indio, has been on a successful trend-setting campaign.

Ras Indio, who is relentless on his mission to make his music recognised around the world, recently returned from the first ever Reggae Fest held in Chet-umal, Quintana Roo held on the weekend of August 16th.

“It was truly a blessing to be so close to home and get the Love and Appreciation for this daily hard work I put in to this music with a mission to spread positive messages worldwide,” Ras Indio wrote on his Facebook page.

Reggae fans from all over Mexico travelled to Chetumal. The main fea-ture of the three-day event was Kyma-ni Marley, who gave fans a free show. Interestingly, K. Marley was in Belize several months ago in a ticket-access only concert.

Ras Indio has been trail blazing. In two weeks, he will join the same

stage as one of the newest reggae mu-sic celebrities, Chronixx in a concert slated for September 9th.

He also launched his newest track titled “Love is the Way” which features international reggae superstar “Turbu-lence”.

This song was composed by Ras Indio and Turbulence while on tour in Seattle, Washington, in response to the violence that has affected both of their home countries: Belize and Ja-maica.

A video for this track has also been unveiled featuring artists Warrior King, Chezidek, Nkulee Dube [daughter of Lucky Dube} Ginjah, Kabaka Pyramid, Wadadah, Princess Kazayah & Belize’s very own Blakberry & Nego Heights.

The idea with Love is the Way is also to promote worldwide love and unity within the music world.

Another recently released video was for the 2014 track: Dem A Fraud. This followed an earlier release of a first-of-its kind music video compila-tion containing the best of Ras Indio’s music videos for hits including Plant Di Corn, Belizean Girlz, and Summer Vy-bez.

Respect Ras Indio.

THINK ABOUT ITTREASON

The Prime Minister said at his last “press conference” that Guatemala be-lieves the whole Sarstoon River and Sars-toon Island is part of their national territory. This is a bomb shell.

This is very different from what Beliz-eans have always thought was the situation. Meaning, we all thought that Guatemala claims the Sarstoon in the same way she claims the south of our country-from Sibun River to the Sarstoon River. She claims buy we exercise possession and control.

But now we are being told Guatemala is treating the whole Sarstoon River as part of their land. They are in possession and they are controlling it.

This explains their new aggression to-wards Belizeans and the BDF when we go “on their river”.

The heroic Belize Territorial Volunteers led by Wil Maheia were on the Sarstoon River on Tuesday 25 August 2015. They re-port that a Guatemala military gun boat es-corted the BDF on its journey up the river to take soldiers to Cadenas. This explains why the Prime Minister was saying how every Tuesday of every week our BDF are confronted by Guatemala and are even told to turn back. The BDF do not turn back but this routine behavior by Guatemala has sig-nificance.

By confronting the BDF, by requesting what is their purpose on the river and by escorting them up the river, Guatemala is exercising sovereignty. It is behaving like it is their river. It is “allowing” BDF to proceed to Cadenas with their permission.

Guatemala can refuse to allow the BDF to continue to travel on the river. And there is nothing the BDF can do but turn back. The Prime Minister is so deadly afraid of a con-frontation, or worse a shoot-out ( God For-bid ) with Guatemala, that he has refused to tackle this most important issue.

Belizeans only learnt of this disturbing new development inadvertently from the PM’s “press conference”. Eager to discour-age Wil Maheia from organizing another expedition of volunteers to visit the Sars-toon, the Prime Minister said the BDF are regularly exercising Belizean sovereignty on the Sarstoon River every Tuesday. But now we know they do so with Guatemala’s per-mission.

If the BDF are travelling on Belize’s side of the Sarstoon River, how can Guatemala’s gunboats confront them in our national ter-ritory and in our internal waters on the river? Every Tuesday. How?

Why was the Guatemalan government not told to immediately stop this incursion into Belizean territory?

Why were Belizeans not informed of this violation of our national sovereignty, re-peatedly, by Guatemalan gunboats?

The Prime Minister’s one track mind to win a third term obviously is more import-ant to him, than his responsibility to protect Belizean territory and sovereignty.

Something has gone seriously wrong in the management of our relations with Guatemala.

And the Prime Minister must come clean over what is going on. For his actions and lack of response is bordering on trea-son.

N.B.-We say “press conference” be-cause what the Prime Minister engages in are not genuine media forums. His is a made-for-television, dictator-style gather-ing. Dozens of high ranking government

officials, Ministers and Chief Executive Of-ficers along with flunkies and party officials pack the room and clap on cue. Some shout down journalists who ask questions .

If the Prime Minister were to announce that he has approved one million dollars to each of his family members from the Pet-rocaribe money as a bonus for their hard work, the room would burst into cheers and applause , from the flunkies and cronies.

This is the state of affairs and the tragic situation the country has fallen into.

IDIOTS IN CABINET

“You cannot run a country with idi-ots in the government”.

This harsh and biting but accurate crit-icism comes from UDP supporter and for-mer government Minister Hubert Elrington. He is also the older brother of Foreign Min-ister Wilfred Elrington.

Hubert, never one to be diplomatic or restrained in expressing his views, made the statement Monday night on Channel 5.

He had many other damning but im-portant observations on the sorry state of affairs Dean Barrow has brought the coun-try to.

Said he, “we have run the country’s economy into shambles. It does not even exist. We live because Venezuela gives us handouts every month. That’s how we survive. Where is the creativity? Where is the ingenuity? Where is the tal-ent? Where is the ability? Where are the goods we should be producing? Where are the resources we should be creating? Where are they? Is that what they talk about in the National Assembly ? when they go to Cabinet?

“We can’t run the country with id-iots in the Cabinet. It is not possible. It can’t be done… How are you going to put idiots in your Cabinet? That cannot happen. It is an insult.

“If people who have no idea of affairs are appointed to the most important po-sitions of state, no training, no ability, no experience, no insight, no nothing, then what are they getting paid for? They are getting paid to do foolishness, to run the country into the ground”.

WRONG MOVE

Last week the Prime Minister held a press conference to put his spin on the dis-turbing developments on the Sarstoon Riv-er in which Guatemalan gun boats entered Belize’s territorial waters and interfered with the Territorial Volunteers.

The Prime Minister took along the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of National Security. These two haughty gen-tlemen sat at the head table with the Prime Minister. During the question and answer period not a single member of the media asked a single question of the two incom-petent Ministers. Despite the fact that the issues concerned our national security and our relations with an increasingly aggressive Guatemala military.

Also at the head table were the head of the Belize Defense Force and head of the Coast Guards. They were questioned by the media.

You won’t believe this. Before the week was out, the Security Minister turned up on Wave TV/radio with the Heads of our BDF and Coast Guard.

Wave TV/radio is the worst media in the country. The two hosts are fanatic UDPs.

They engage in the most scurrilous attacks against any citizen who is not a supporter of their party.

It is in violation of the laws governing public officers for any public officer to allow his integrity to be called into question. Public officers are expressly forbidden from dis-playing any type of party political allegiance or behavior. What are members of the public to feel when they hear and see the Heads of our Army and Navy on this low down dirty party political organ?

As it is, there are suspicions on the Head of the Army. He is making statements which are not what should be coming from him. Imagine him saying that the territorial volunteers are causing a rift between the Be-lize and Guatemala military?

Imagine the Head of our Army admitting that the Guatemala gun boats enter Belize’s territorial river (our internal waters) and are accosting and harassing BDF on their week-ly journey to Cadenas .

There is also talk that the General has completed his tour of duty and has been re-hired by the UDP politicians. If so, this ex-plains a whole lot.

LOVE FM IS UDP?

When publicly challenged for allowing two senior public officers, the Military and Naval Heads of Departments to be on Wave Radio, Minister Saldivar supported the un-lawful move.

When asked why not use a more neu-tral media, his quick reply was he had no problem to be on Love FM.

Interesting. Love is no longer neutral.Love FM has been allowing its media to

be used as a propaganda organ of the UDP government.

This is so sad, and represents a dark day for our democracy.

All is not well in the nation of Belize (to put it mildly). Rampant corruption, growing victimization, waste of public monies, grow-ing poverty (over 48%), half the young peo-ple cannot get into college, thousands of graduates and no jobs, the gap between imports and exports continues to widen, violent crime is becoming endemic; and on and on are our problems.

For a media to allow itself to be high-jacked for a few dollars more is sad.

Shame on Love.

OIL, OIL EVERYWHERE

The international price of petrol has fall-en, and we mean fallen from a high of US $110.00 per barrel in June 2014 to US$38.87 this week. It has been below US $50.00 for more than six months.

Twice this and last month Jamaica has lowered its retail price at the pump.

All over the world, the price to consum-ers have fallen, by sizeable amounts.

But not in Belize. Here the “idiots” and hustlers have

found it most convenient to rip off the Beliz-ean consumer and in the process keep the cost of living as high as it can be.

UNACCEPTABLE

This column joins with the Dickie Brad-ley Monday night show in expressing alarm over the open threats made by Minister Mark King on national television.

King said at a political event in his con-stituency that he was coming after Mose Hyde, and Evan X Hyde and Kremandala. He would wipe them out or some such very se-rious statement.

King’s political opponent is Cordel Hyde. Why drag in the man’s family into his frus-trated and bitter hatred against Cordel family

and their media business? No Minister of Government can make

such statements and threats in a democracy. But then again, who said Belize is really

a democracy.

HUGO CHAVEZ’S DAUGHTER

Belize’s biggest benefactor is not Bar-on Bliss, nor USA or the UK. It is Venezuela. Specifically it is Hugo Chavez, a humble Ven-ezuelan who joined his country’s army, and eventually became its most popular Presi-dent.

Hugo Chavez had a vision that his Latin American and Caribbean brothers and sis-ters could enjoy a better life and have a more rewarding future than the one set out by the Americans and Europeans imperialists. Us-ing the awesome oil wealth which Venezuela sits on, as the world’s largest oil field, Hugo conceptualized a program where his coun-try’s oil would be sold at less than half and the balance treated as a long term loan. Such a program became the Petrocaribe

For Belize and our region Hugo Chavez has done more, for more, than Barack Obama, who had only given guns, army uni-forms, ammunition, gun boats and military training to the countries of the region.

On Friday 21 August 2015, the Vice President of Venezuela visited Belize’s Prime Minister. The press was not invited. Accom-panying the Vice-President was his wife, Rosa Virginia, who is the daughter of Hugo Chavez.

The media should have been allowed even an airport interview. The Prime Minister was afraid the real reason for the visit would have come out. Our Prime Minister said the Vice-President came to Belize to discuss the border dispute between Venezuela and Guy-ana.

But there must have been some discus-sion of Petro Caribe funds. Belize has wast-ed more than three hundred million dollars. With the price of petrol falling and remaining at an all-time low, petro funds will dry up.

We Belizeans would have wanted the Vice President and Hugo Chavez daughter to know how much we admired the great lead-er and to say thanks for his generosity.

We would have shown her the Hugo Chavez Boulevard and Bridge, the Hugo Chavez Stadium, the Hugo Chavez housing project and High Schools and the impressive Hugo Chavez statute by Stephen Okeke.

Yes, you guessed it right, all the millions wasted and stolen and not a single Hugo Chavez project that benefits the masses of our people for whom the money should have been spent on.

MELVIN HULSE-MADAFISH

UDPs madafish came from the river bottom to tell Belizeans what a worthless, chancey and victimizing UDP government is ruling the nation.

He knows what he is saying. He is for-mer Minister of Government and until a few weeks ago was the Standard Bearer for his party until his outspoken behavior resulted in the Prime Minister personally attacking him and throwing him out the party.

Melvin knows all the inside details of a rogue government which victimizes the citizens of Belize, including their own loyal members.

Melvin is angry and rightly so, as he re-cently learnt that dozens of UDP supporters in Stann Creek West are having their land titles and leases cancelled out of spite for supporting Melvin.

The UDP dares not call any ICJ referen-dum. Neither will the Prime Minister risk any early general elections.

Belizeans are unhappy with the Prime Minister. Suspicious and unhappy.

CARTOON

Petrocaribe Party Done!!is not going to increase anytime soon, which means that the Petro Caribe funds which the government has be-come very dependent on and which are squandered on tacos, pibil, party, etc. are dwindling. Dwindling because there are no more Petro loan funds coming in to the UDP government coffers and it had stopped coming in from January 2015. Take note that the infrastructure works has stopped throughout the country. In Belize City, a major artery known as Cinderella Plaza which was dug up and left abandoned.

The Petro Caribe unpaid loan por-tion has also been used by the Central Bank to create an illusion that the for-eign reserves are robust. The foreign reserves should be made up of actual earnings in United States dollars, but in this case it has been populated by bor-rowed money (Petrocaribe loan funds) that will have to be paid back.

The foreign reserves are one of the important veins of the economy. The reserves are used to pay for the things we import, which under this Govern-ment have been increasing while the productive sector crumbles. This same productive sector (shrimp, citrus, sug-ar, corn) attracts a significant portion of the currency in the economy and it is in trouble, therefore there is no foreign exchange relief on the horizon.

Early elections will be called in 2015 because the foreign reserves will fade by the end of the year, especially as the merchants begin to stock up on prod-ucts for the holidays around October.

Soon the queuing at the commer-cial banks will increase for the purchase of US dollar for the purchase of imports for the holidays. This currency shortage is further compounded by the inability to move funds freely through all the commercial banks due to the derisking saga by the US-based mega banks.

This crisis has been caused by an incompetent government only focused on lining up their individual pockets and pockets of their cronies. Doug Singh, their chief financial insider, and a former UDP Minister, stated a few years ago, that the UDP government were design to win election and not to govern.

In a nutshell, the “PARTY DONE” AND the Belizeans people will have to foot the bill and suffer.

Artist “Bobo Youth” fished out of

Haulover CreekBelize City, August 26, 2015

A local fisherman hoping to get his best catch of the day got the scare of his life when in-stead of pulling out fish with his net, he dragged out a lifeless body out from the Haulover Creek, under the BelCan Bridge in Belize City.

Herman Williams, the fisherman, said the first thing he recognised was a human hand hooked on his net. He was startled.

“I deh inna wata to about my knee and I dash di net and when I do soh, I feel some-thing heavy pon it. I feel something heavy and when I do soh I look and I see like wah piece ah board di come and when I look I see dah wah hand. And I let go dih net and I run pon dih edge ah dih wata,” recounted Williams.

Williams ran onto the street where he met two Police officers. The area immediately be-came a crime scene.

The body of the dead person has been iden-tified as well-known artist, 33 year old Theodore Parchue, better known as Bobo Youth.

Police have reported that there are no signs of physical violence on the body, and do not sus-pect foul play.

It is believed that Bobo Youth, who had be-come homeless and found refuge under the bridge, suffered an epileptic fit sometime during the night before, fell into the river and drowned.

Request to impeach Guatemalan president approved by Supreme Court

Wednesday 26 August 2015 13.43 BST

The Guatemalan supreme court on Tuesday approved a request by the country’s attorney general to impeach President Otto Perez over his suspect-ed involvement in a racket to siphon customs revenue from the govern-

ment, and passed the matter to congress for approval.

A number of corruption inves-tigations have devastated Perez’s cabinet and led to the resignation in May of Vice-President Roxana Baldetti.

On Sunday, Perez angrily dis-missed corruption allegations that have been leveled against him by prosecutors, and he adamantly said he would not resign despite mounting pressure on the govern-ment and calls for his impeach-ment as a presidential election looms.

Guatemala’s attorney general and a United Nations-backed an-ti-corruption body known as the Cicig sought to impeach Perez on Friday after months of investiga-tion into the racket known as La Linea, or “the line”, after a phone hotline that was used in the scan-dal.

Under the scam, importers

were able to avoid pay-ing customs duties in ex-change for bribes, which investigators have said were distributed to offi-cials.

Perez’s conservative administration has spent much of this year mired in public protests and scandals over corruption allegations against senior officials, several of whom the retired general fired during a cabinet purge in May.

Baldetti was arrested earlier this month on sus-picion of illicit association, bribery and fraud linked to the customs scheme. Baldetti has denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this month, Pe-rez scraped through a vote in congress that would have stripped him of im-munity from prosecution.

More than half of Guatemala’s 158-mem-ber congress voted to lift Perez’s immunity, but the total fell short of the two-thirds’ majority, or 105 votes, needed to carry the motion.

A first round of voting to elect his successor is due in September and Pe-rez is barred by law from seeking re-election.

QUESTIONOF THE WEEK

With cude oil prices falling to an all time low of $33 US per barrel, why are Belizeans still paying the all time high for fuel at the pumps?
