Optimising for SEO Does Not Make You a

Spammer.

Search engine optimisation doesn’t have to equate to

spamming. Even Google’s Matt Cutts says so and to

help you with your SEO efforts, Google puts out a

Google Starter SEO guide to help people understand

what Google is looking for as well as to help you

know what can help you optimise your site for visitors

as well as their digital arachnids. There are ways that

you can continually boost your site’s SEO so that you achieve great results and in

a way that doesn’t make you look or seem like a spammer to Google or to your

audience.

Optimise and Operate with Integrity

The key to successful white hat SEO (ethical search engine optimizing) is to

optimise and operate with integrity. This means not trying to “game” the system

and that you are trying, genuinely, to provide a good service to your customers

while also trying to illustrate to prospective customers precisely what your site is

about. Organic SEO equates to helping search engines naturally find you (and find

you to be relevant and useful) so that they can send relevant traffic your way.

Areas to focus on include accessibility, design, and content.

Accessibility – An important element of SEO is to show search engines what your

site is about. Specific optimisation techniques don’t try to pull the wool over

anyone’s (or any spider’s) eyes. They give your site clarity for any search engine

program / spider trying to read the page.

Design – Designing for conversion, for user experience, for good page loading

speed, and for search engines will not only make you appeal to search engines but

the resulting actions of visitors will tell those search engines that they correctly sent

traffic your way (Search engines continually analyse their results to make sure they

don’t need to tweak them).

Content – Write and present valuable content regularly. Build on page and off

page content that helps you with your site optimisation and that helps you with

providing value and helps you illustrate your commitment to quality to anyone

crawling or reading your site. Remember, search engines index individual pages,

rather than whole websites so every page of content can have great potential.

In a nutshell:

Wherever you’re working to provide value while also improving your SEO,

you’re going to generally be tackling SEO the right way.

Whether you’re doing DIY SEO or you hire an SEO company, here are some

things you shouldn’t do:

Doorway pages that try to fool search engines

Keyword stuffing

Invisible text

Unethical link building strategies

There are several black hat methods that dodgy SEO firms attempt. (Get more info

about identifying black hat SEO) Even if they get you short term results, those

results won’t last and could get your site blacklisted.

A cutting edge and ethical SEO company isn’t trying to game Google. The

company is trying to help your site get seen by potential customers. Some SEO

specialists go one further and help you market to those customers and site visitors

as well. Finding the right SEO company is key to your success. Check out

the Google SEO Starter Guide for additional info and when searching for an SEO

company to deal with, choose someone who works to optimize for Google, not who

works to trick Google.

Thinking about DIY SEO instead of hiring a pro? DIY SEO is a lot of work and

leaves room for error. A wrong move could land you in hot water with search

engines. If you don’t have the cycles to manage your business while managing

your SEO, get a consultation from an SEO company like ours to find out what we

can do for you.
