Today, Belgrade looks like a city that is at the time of blooming, as a beautiful girl who is not yet fully aware of her beauty, and will probably soon begin to aggressively use her makeup to attract the suitors and will eventually rise to the top of the well-known destinations. We strongly recommend you to taste Belgrade. Now, while it’s still not widely discovered - Catalin Gruia, reporter for National Geographic

WHERE GOOD ATMOSPHERE AWAITS

Anyone who travels knows that no city in the world can be disovered properly if we do not have appropriate hosts. Of course,

when we say that we think of the people who live in these cities, who know their soul and know what the must-see places are. The Tourist Organisation of Serbia (TOS) has a long time ago taken the role of being the host to visitors of Serbia and Belgrade as its capital. The people from the TOS were the ones who introduced Serbia to many foreign del-egations and their job, which is also a great plea-sure, becomes extremely important when we have as our guests media representatives, journalists, reporters, cameramen, whose task is to present Serbia in their respective countries and present their readers and viewers with their impressions of Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, about our churches and monasteries, cult festivals, customs, people.

The way this quite demanding and sensitive job was done in 2014 is pretty much clear from reports from the foreign press published after reporters of those media outlets stayed in Serbia, under the auspices of the TOS.

FEEL BELGRADE, INDISPENSABLY AND SOONAfter a reporter of the eminent British edition of

the magazine National Geographic, as a guest of the TOS, recently visited the Serbian capital, this

magazine has had only the words of praise about Belgrade and sends an unequivocal invitation that Serbia’s capital is a must visit destination: “The Serbian city is the life and soul of the party. Live it up and brace yourself for boat-based clubs with a grown-up crowd, al fresco terraces overlooking the Danube and pop-up exhibitions were you can sift through local artworks.”

Stewart's article about the Serbian capital clearly conveys emotions and impressions of Belgrade as seen through the eyes of a Briton: "Belgrade has the upbeat vibe of a city undergoing positive change and has quietely established a reputation as one of the world's leading party destinations. As a legacy of the Yugoslav Wars and NATO bombing of Serbia in the 1990s, many Brits simply don’t consider visiting. Those who do are often impressed by the warmth of residence.”

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM NEIGHBOURING ROMANIA Under the headline "Big Ambitions for Belgrade",

the December issue of the Romanian edition of the magazine National Geographic published a report about the Serbian capital. Journalist Catalin Gruia, after a six-day visit to Belgrade, turned his experiences of the Serbian capital into as many as 15 pages. He writes about Belgrade: “Few are the

BelGuest Winter-Spring | Zima-proleće 2015 7

Page 8: Belguest winter spring 2015

places blessed with such beautiful nature. We're talking about the only European capital located on two large watercourses, the Sava and the Danube. Now, while it’s still not widely discovered.” Illustrated with striking photographs, the reportage describes and recommends the famous attractions of Belgrade, with vivid descriptions of personal experi-ences. During his visit to Belgrade, Catalin Gruia took the opportunity to get familiar with the Belgrade Waterfront project at the Geozavod building, that Mayor Siniša Mali personally presented to him.

THE ENGLISH SEE SERBIA AS DECISIVELY DIFFERENT The British newspaper The Daily Mirror in the

text entitled "Are you being Serbed?", by Martin Newman, describes the most interesting tourist attractions in Serbia, and in particular highlights the Drina regatta and the "small house on the Drina", commenting that "Serbs take these places for granted that are often more rewarding for visi-tors." The photo of green landscapes is signed as: Glorious – soak up the stunning Serbian landscape.

The Sunday Post in an article by Katie Wood writes: "Few places in Europe remain undiscov-ered for long – think of the rise of Prague, or the Croatian coastline. Both have become tourist hotspots. But if you fancy somewhere that's still off-the-beaten-track, one corner of the continent that remains largely unknown to British travellers is Serbia". The text begins with the statement: "In Belgrade, ancient city and capital of Serbia, locals tell you with a degree of both pride and regret of how their city has been attacked, destroyed, con-quered and settled by numerous armies and pow-ers over the centuries, but has always recovered." A part of the report is devoted to impressions from the trip to Western Serbia: with descriptions of the beauties of the National Park Tara, the canyon and

the river Drina, Katie Wood recommends a tour of Drvengrad, and mentions as particularly great experience the Šargan Eight ride that "provides great views". With an open-air museum in the village of Sirogojno, which she describes as a place that "captures a better essence of how life here would have looked centuries ago," Katie Wood was enchanted by the scenes of "wedding celebrations going on outside the village church, complete with a Balkan brass band, dancing revellers and plenty of Rakia." Reminding the readers that Serbia is in the process of negotiations for accession to the European Union that will most certainly change its face, she concludes: "Now is a fascinating time to visit a country that will reward tourists willing to make the effort... If you want somewhere a bit undiscovered and 'different', this is for you."

COUNTRY THAT SURPRISESThe Sun in its specialised section dedicated to

travels published an article by David Coverdale, entitled "Serbian city is Europe's party central". Describing the nightlife in Belgrade, the author notes that "residents of this Balkan beauty simply do not know the meaning of an early night." In the follow-up, he announces the EXIT programme and advises readers to connect their visit to the festival with an exploring venture of Belgrade. He stresses that "not only is Serbia still something

of an unknown gem, but the value for money is astonishing." Reminding readers that the Novi Sad festival was visited by 10,000 Britons, the author notes that "what gives this festival its USP, though, is its amazing venue – the Petrovardin Fortress. There's nothing more special in this stunning set-ting than seeing the sunrise around 5am when you're still dancing."

The Star published an article authored by Ian Sautar with the subheading: "Former Yugoslavian republic is moving away from its troubled past and attracting tourists." In his article, he praises the bohemian life of Belgrade and gives his obser-vation about the Serbian people, "Serbians are friendly and hospitable people, especially in prof-fering the dreaded spirits, even at breakfast time..." He describes the Šargan Eight as "one of the won-ders of the world." Describing in detail Kusturica’s Drvengrad, the reporter for The Star recorded: "The streets have names of famous people that Kusturica holds in high esteem such as Nikola Tesla, Che Guevara, Diego Maradona, Federico Fellini and Ingmar Bergman. It's a prime example of how Serbia continually surprises you."

WELCOME TO THE COUNTRY AT THE CROSSROADS The French impressions of Belgrade and Serbia

are similar, but the French press dedicated more

space to contemporary art trends and histori-cal context. Le Telegramme, in an article entitled Serbia – Awakening of the ex-Yugoslavia, writes: "With its culture of design and arts, Belgrade shows the new energy that contrasts the Baroque atmosphere of the provincial cities such as Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci. Welcome to the country at the crossroads!"

Femina Magazine published an article in which it called Belgrade the "queen of the Balkans that likes a good time, but does not forget its history either, which is a combination of the interesting and the touching."

In the magazine Challenges, Belgrade got the title of the window of the Balkans: "After a long stagnation, the Serbian capital is finally recovering and celebrates the joy of living. Two things that unmistakably point to that are: significant progress in the reconstruction of old buildings and new brands that bloom all over the city."

A VIEW FROM THE TURKISH PERSPECTIVEThe magazine of the Turkish Airlines, Skylife,

gives its views on the "10 good reasons to go to Belgrade", stressing that the capital of Serbia is "a lush green city of culture nestled between two rivers". Ten sections designed as a guide show the sights of Belgrade. The Belgrade Fortress is described as "an open air museum from which the

city's two millennia of history are spread before your eyes," particularly highlighting the monu-ments and the Military Museum containing memo-ries of the Ottoman era. Ada Ciganlija, Ada Bridge, the Old Town, Skadarlija and cruise along the Danube, are also listed among the good reasons to visit. As part of the Ottoman heritage the Bayrakli mosque was presented, while Nikola Tesla Museum was particularly highlighted: "How about a tour of a museum named for the world-renowned physicist Nikola Tesla, the designer of modern alternating current electricity power systems?" The editorial board of Skylife also comes up with an interesting observation: "Although its name means 'white city', it is actually green that describes Belgrade. And one of the most beautiful green areas in this city of exactly 65 parks is Topcider." The richly illustrated story about Belgrade – on seven pages – ends with a proposal for a trip to Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci.

TECHNO, TANGO & TRUMPET PLAYERS In an article published in the German travelogue

Reise, Belgrade is presented with all the "typicali-ties", such as clubs, rafts and cafés. It also describes Vojvodina, its farms, the wine routes of Fruška Gora and Exit festival. "English Times not a long ago declared Belgrade a metropolis where the best parties in Europe are organised. This is because the

BelGuest Winter-Spring | Zima-proleće 2015 9

Page 10: Belguest winter spring 2015

scenic restaurants, bars and retro XXXL discos are usually open 24 hours, so you can organise dozens of festivals and hundreds of concerts a year, while on the Sava River you can visit the rafts playing techno music, jazz or tango... However, Serbia is more than just Belgrade and its night life," says 22 year-old reporter Bogdan, "you should need at least two more days to look around the sur-roundings too. You should visit Vojvodina with its vast wheat and corn fields, supplying the whole of Serbia... Three hours south of Belgrade and you’ll be at Guča, which hosts once a year one of the largest music festivals. What began in 1961 in the courtyard of a church as a competition of four orchestras has now developed into one of the largest festivals of brass trumpet players in Europe. Madness made in Serbia – a small village of 3,000 souls – turns once in a year into a festival of music, color, smell and taste. Serbs are the people who know well how to enjoy."

An article published in Zeit Online describes the history of the famous festival in Novi Sad: "Exit has its roots in protest against Slobodan Milosevic... The CNN and the Guardian chose it as one of the best in the world, it has received one award after another, and this year it might be proclaimed the best festival in Europe."

LONELY PLANET MADE A CHOICE As every year, Lonely Planet has published a "Guide

for top ten countries" that are a must-see in the coming year. Selecting the countries from around the world, the jury placed Serbia on the list of the ten most attractive destinations – along with Singapore, Namibia, Lithuania, Nicaragua, Ireland, the Congo, the Philippines, Saint Lucia and Morocco.

Only three countries in Europe are on the list, and Serbia is one of them. This place was taken

because of the "night life, passionate and strong character of its inhabitants, and very affordable prices." Tourism experts point out that "this small country is one of the best kept secrets in Europe. That’s why they recommend that Serbia should be visited in the very near future, as it’s becoming increasingly popular!"

Based on this recommendation, the Italian Donna Moderna published a story headlined Belgrade check in: "If you're looking for a mix between the East and the West and a great nightlife, you’ll choose Belgrade, a city that is not overcrowded with tourists, but offers all that in abundance... You'll fall in love with its bohemian and lively atmosphere, the street artists, and designer shops. Belgrade wakes up thanks to the creativity of young people and refreshing urban space."

SERBIA IN UNIMAGINABLE NUMBER OF COPIES The voice about Serbia is spread to China as well.

Shanghai daily Xinmin Evening News, which has a circulation of 1,280,000 copies, under the title "A Fantastic Journey to Serbia", invites Chinese tour-ists to learn about contemporary art of Serbia, to enjoy a wide selection of Serbian food and wine, to participate in adventures that nature provides and to experience a "vibrating" night life in this fantas-tic country. The Southern People Weekly magazine, which comes out in Shenzhen - the capital of Guangdong Province - published an article about the celebration of Orthodox Christmas Eve and Christmas with photos of log burning in front of the Temple of Saint Sava. This magazine has a circula-tion of 400,000 copies.

The Internet edition of Shanghai Metro Express daily newspaper published an article "Serbia – the heart of the Danube". The article describes the lav-ish nature that surrounds the banks of the Danube,

the mild climate and clean air in Serbia. Also, the article highlights the possibilities for an active holiday – cycling, skiing and wellness in the ther-mal waters of the Serbian spas. The Beijing internet portal Youko published a video about Belgrade as an ideal place for short city breaks, and the maga-zine Best of the Best in Tourism that comes out in Hong Kong published an article announcing two main promotional themes for 2014: One hundred years since the beginning of the First World War and Lifestyle in Serbia.

PERSISTENTLY CHANGING THE IMAGE Summarising all the results achieved in the pre-

sentation of Serbia in a different way, Director of the TOS Gordana Plamenac says: "We are very proud to be included in Lonely Planet’s top 10 destinations for 2015, because it shows the growing interest of foreign tourists in Serbia as a tourist destination. This is also an indicator that foreign markets recognise the investments, effort and energy that we invested in enriching ways of promoting a diversified tourism offer of Serbia. This promotion of Serbia in syn-ergy with strong partners is proof of capabilities and potentials of marketing in the real business of con-necting professionals at the global level and creating conditions for the improvement of our tourism offer."

Articles and reports about Serbia as an attractive tourist destination were published in the media in neighbouring Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, as well as the media in Sweden, Benelux...

Indeed, superlatives which reflect the specificity of the tourist offer of Serbia, as well as recommen-dations to visit Serbia soon are proof of the rapid changing of the image of Serbia from "an existing image in recent years" to "a very attractive and desirable image now".

ENGLEZI VIDE SRBIJU KAO – ODLUČNO DRUGAČIJUBritanski dnevni list The Daily Mirror u tekstu

The Sun donosi tekst Dejvida Koverdejla pod naslo-vom „Srpski grad je glavni evropski grad zabave”.

U tekstu hvali beoemski život Beograda i iznosi svoje zapažanje o srpskom naro-du: „Srbi su prijateljski raspoloženi i gostoljubivi ljudi, naročito kada vas nutkaju ljutom rakijom, čak i u vreme doručka...”

slične impesije, međutim francuska štampa više prostora posvećuju savremenim umetničkim stru-janjima i istorijskom kontekstu. U Le Telegramme-u, pod naslovom Srbija - buđenje ex-Jugoslavije, piše: „Sa svojom kulturom dizajna i umetnosti, Beograd pokazuje novu energiju koja kontrastira baroknoj atmosferi gradova u unutrašnjosti poput Novog Sada i Sremskih Karlovaca.

POGLED IZ TURSKE PRESPEKTIVE Magazin Turkish Airlines-a Skylife daje svoje viđe-

Inertnet izdanje šangajskog dnevnog lista Metro Express objavljuje tekst pod naslovom „Srbija – srce Dunava”.

ISTRAJNOST U PROMENI IMIDŽASumirajući sve postignute rezultate u predsta-

Onakvu kakva Srbija zaista jeste.

The College of Tourism in the last eight years has been patron of the EX-YU Graphics Competition, whose contribution to the recognition and promotion of contemporary graphic production has been immeasurable. Apart from the exhibition itself and cash prizes for the best three graphic artists and three students of graphics design, the organisers at the same time form their own collection for their work space, but is also a valuable collection for the study of contemporary graphics.

CULTURE AS IDENTITY

Due to the great response of artists from all former Yugoslav republics, and almost constant number of graphic artists who

participate in the competition, we are pleased to note that this cultural event has become a popular and regular one... The idea and vision are success-fully achieved by networking graphic designers, artists and students. Particularly interesting and valuable for all of us is the fact that graphic art-ists whose value had long ago been reaffirmed have responded to the call, and that all the classic graphic techniques and digital printing are present, the author of the competition, academy-trained painter Nataša Brkić, noted.

COMMUNICATION WITH NEIGHBOURING ART SCENES The competition is open to all visual artists and

graduate students of art faculties from the ex-

Yugoslav space. Only original print works, created in the last two years, are accepted. The rating of this art competition is on the rise year-in-year-out, and so is the number of submitted prints. A total of 192 authors sent their works themed “Distance”, many of whom are recognised artists and renowned professors.

The exhibition of graphics from the 8th EX-YU Competition was officially opened in early December at the National Gallery, Belgrade, and during the exhibition graphic artists held eight lectures, debates and discussions themed Graphics, a special kind of intelligence.

EX YU MAGNIFICENT 2014By the decision of the jury comprising Vesna

Todorović, Gordana Petrović and Željko Đurović, the prize in the category of graphic designers went to Slobodan Radojković for woodcut “A Large Tuft” (I)

Award-winners with Director of the College of Tourism Dr. Milan Skakun

Nenad Zeljić for aquatint in color "Apollo" (II) and Slađana Marinković for an unnamed piece, done in etching-aquatint technique (III). By the rules of the competition, there is a special category for judging the works of final year students of art fac-ulties. The first prize went to Nevena Milovančević from Belgrade for her work in combined technique “Moment”, the second prize went to Denis Haračić from Sarajevo for the work "Hegel in the Neolithic Period" done in combination aquatint-linocut, and the third prize to Nedim Šećeragić from Sarajevo for aquatint work “Nine Dreams, Nine Stones” and to Ana Prodanović from Belgrade for the linocut “I am not waiting”.

CREATIVITY, GETTING TOGETHER, COOPERATINGSupport for young people, as well as the opportunity

for them to present their ideas and techniques and share experiences with colleagues is one of the great-est assets of this competition. The College of Tourism announced that this exhibition, together with the previous ones, will be on tour, so the authors will be presented in many cities in Serbia and the region.

When people get to know each other through creativity, then it is much more likely for them to cooperate in other areas, particularly in tourism. The College of Tourism has traditionally been a sponsor of the international festival of tourism and ecology film SILAFEST, which brings together a large number of artists from around the world. Developed interna-tional cooperation is a trademark of this educational institution that also organises the unique event AMBASSADORS SPEAK, which allows students to get to know the specificities, the culture and customs of many countries of the world.

EXHIBITION BY IVANKA JE V TOVIĆ ABOUT THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Only when you think that almost everything has been said about the First World War – a work of an author happens completely unexpectedly. One of the exhibitions marking the 100th anniversary of the First World War was the exhibition "Memory - Sadness and Beauty" authored by Ivanka Jevtović. What makes it different from other exhibitions that marked the year 2014 is the fact that it is specific, fresh in idea and recognisable in the signature, and marked by a special emotional weave.

MEMORY – SADNESS AND BEAUTY

Page 19: Belguest winter spring 2015

The exhibition set in the Gallery of the House of the Serbian Army in September was dedi-cated to the heroines of the First World War,

Milunka Savić and Nadežda Petrović, inspired by this great jubilee. The setting evokes and cherishes the memory of all Serbian heroes of that time, all those who are now gone. Deeply inspired, the artist used the technique of collage on panel to represent stylised versions of army uniforms and traditional garments, and incorporate them into unique high fashion creations – through the frame and heart, as symbols of remembrance – Ivanka Jevtović builds her record, like a sign by the road, at time present, leaves a trail for the time future about the time past. With a clear vow – may it never be forgot-ten. All this is woven with a filigree line that is not pathetic, but awakens strong emotions. As, all this is a record about us.

After all, what was it that our ancestors were defending? Ethnos, the territory of spirituality... That’s why the ornaments from the frescoes from the monasteries of Raška and Morava architec-tural style, traditional rugs, apples filled in the frames in which remembrance is packed and preserved. And if we explained the memory and reduced it to two ingredients – we would come down to sadness and beauty. This clearly defined the concept of the exhibition.

The first room of the Small Gallery was dominat-ed by the dark tones of sadness. They carry infor-mation about the exhibition, the topic and inspi-ration. Collage panels dedicated to Milunka Savić and Nadežda Petrović open the windows into the world of an ordinary man, a Serbian peasant who coped with the burden of a great war. Frames in the series with pieces of the then reality, faces, looks, stopped motions – framed the memory. The technique of collage that dominated the walls found its equivalent in the space – in the eclectics of high fashion models. A male suit that Milunka Savić wore, with a scarf as a spice, buttons from Velika Hoča, a uniform of Serbian officers from the time of the First World War, and the hearts of Plexiglas painted with the ornaments from fres-coes – have beened into something completely new – high fashion that looks like vision. In every seam and fold there is memory deposited – full of associations and recognition.

Another room of the Small Gallery was airy, transparent and white. The easel that dominated the space was also white. It was there as a direct association to Nadežda Petrović. There was a white frame on it, empty so that each of the visitors could stand for one moment and imprint his experience of the topic, building his associa-tive image, deepening his own memory. Because,

they say that there is no Serbian family that in the First World War did not lose at least one of its members. It is also a fact that there is no country that participated in the First World War that, pro-portionally to the number of its population, paid so dearly for its liberty. Will liberty know how to sing...? Yes, it will know how to dream. And that’s most important. As a dream is the best possible form of desirable reality. What we strive for, from which art emerges.

The whiteness of the setting of the other room and hand-painted motives from the frescoes on the airy hearts opened the windows to the soul. There memory resides.

Only when you think that almost everything has been said about the First World War – a miracle of an author happens completely unexpectedly. The Jevtović family manufacture has given everything a special tone. Gene-in-gene, Ivanka Jevtović, with the craft skill of her brother Ivan Jevtović, incorpor-tated her concept into the drawings of her father Dušan Jevtović’s escape – modeling the modern and timeless nameless story of a people, family, woman, man, life, death, philosophically defining two meaningful carriers for all that – sadness and beauty. Are not our lives, when we encircle them by a line of heart, easily reducible to it?

SEĆANJE – TUGA I LEPOTA

Izložba postavljena u Galeriji Doma Vojske Srbije u septembru mesecu posvećena je heroinama Prvog svetskog rata, Milunki Savić i Nadeždi Petrović, a inspirisana velikim jubilejom. Postavka priziva

Etnos, teritoriju, duhovnost…

Oni nose informaciju o samoj izložbi, temi i inspiraciji. Kolažni paneli

SEĆANJE – TUGA I LEPOTA

A to i jeste najvažnije. Jer, san i jeste najbolji mogući oblik poželjne stvarnosti. Ono čemu težimo, iz čega i nastaje umetnost.

Belina postavke druge prostorije i rukom oslikani motivi fresaka na prozračnim srcima otvarali su prozore duše. Tu i boravi sećanje.

To Chris Farmer, life seems to give one surreal moment after anoth-er. Perfectly normal things hap-pento him every day, but some-how, through his essays, they are turned on their heads and become strange adventures. And instead of shrugging his shoulders like the rest of us, he writes about it.

Chris Farmer has been collecting stories and anecdotes about his life here in Belgrade for over a decade, and his new book, Grumpy in

Belgrade (published by Komshe in November), puts all kinds of reactions on display. He is not afraid to give his opinion about advertising campaigns, politi-cal figures, cows, umbrellas, and his own struggle with the Serbian language. All of which are treated with a slightly sardonic and infinitely ironic wink at how completely “weird” human beings can be.

The title is an irony all by itself. One has the impression that Mr. Farmer would talk the same way about any city in any part of the world – although the pages of the book contain some passages that are entirely Serbian.

And he is not wholly grumpy throughout. “First Snow” waxes eloquent about impressions of the first snows falling. “Cows Around Town” has a philo-sophical feel to it. To him, every part of every day offers an opportunity to sit and think about how we do things and why.

The book is an entertaining reflection of our-selves, not always flattering, but never deroga-tory. It gives the reader a chance to look at the world through his unique point of view – a foreigner in Belgrade seeing things he cannot always understand and trying to makes sense of them.

Chris Farmer’s point of view is unique in that he is American who has not lived in America

for years. He has been around the world and speaks four languages but has not mastered Serbian (yet). He takes things as he sees them, measuring them against his own personal expectations.

Grumpy in Belgrade gives a very poignant snap-shot into life here, not only his but also ours. It makes us think how things could be and how we deal with things as they are.

And if some of it has made Chris a little grumpy, maybe we can forgive him a little. It gave us, after all, a bit of light entertainment we might not normally have had.

‘When something is broken in my imme-diate surroundings, I will call The Guy to come fix it.

This means the kitchen sink, the boiler, the fuse box, the electric outlets, the wash-ing machine, the ripped shirt, the car, the window. Anything that we touch may break or cease to function at a moment’s notice, whether or not I have struck it with a sledge hammer or tried to fill it with tomato juice. At that point, there is always someone out there whose special purpose in life is to repair the damage. We call the guy.

I say “we” call him, but more and more I am getting the impression that it is only me. Every time something goes wrong and I want to call the guy, I seem to get looks of sympathy and condescension. People (men in particular) think it is a personal failure if we cannot fix something ourselves but have to appeal to a mercenary “majstor” to come in, assess the situation, shake his head sadly, and fix it in three minutes.’

A i nije on prgav baš u celoj knjizi.

Europe is full of hidden corners waiting to be discovered. It is precisely these spots that EDEN finds and promotes – secretive places, hidden from the eyes of tourists, which conceal unusual beauty and countless mysteries in

their small microcosms. The National Tourism Organisation of Serbia conducted the first national competition programme of the European Commission to select European Destinations of Exellence. The winning EDEN destination for 2014 is Knjaževac, followed by Kovačica, Topola, Kučevo and Zlatar.

EDEN – European Destinations of ExcelleNce – a European Commission programme that promotes models of sustainable tourism development. Every year at the national level European countries organize competitions for

European Destinations of Excellence. This flattering title can be awarded to des-tinations which, as the main principles of tourism development, are socially, culturally and environmentally sustainable.

The hunt for exceptional destinations of Europe every year develops around common themes that are selected by the European Commission, together with national institutions responsible for tourism. The selection of EDEN destina-tions draws attention to the values, differences and diversity of the European tourism offer, increasing the visibility of places whose time is yet to come, cre-ating a basis for the exchange of experiences and good practices across Europe by promoting the networking of awarded destinations.

lepote i nebrojene misterije.

Knjaževac is a town at the confluence of two rivers: Svrljiški Timok and Trgoviški Timok. It is provided with special charm by its lively Old Bazaar, the promenade beside the river and as many as seven bridges. However, this is just a small part

of what the town and its surroundings have to offer. Each year in May, on St. George’s Day, at the foot of Midžor, the highest mountain peak

in eastern Serbia, in the village of Vrtovac, is held the pageant known as The Prayer under Midžor. The uniqueness of this ritual lies in the fact that it combines pagan and Christian elements. It celebrates the power of spring and nature, as well as the re-emergence of life from winter numbness. This St. George’s Day custom was nominated jointly by numerous countries for inclusion on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Today the Prayer under Midžor is accompanied by an attractive ethnic festival, which celebrates traditional singing and dancing, handicrafts and the preparation of a variety of old dishes: lamb stew, cheese and Belmuž. Belmuž is traditionally prepared by men!

And the women? With five needles, using black and red wool, knitting double-knit socks. Making them takes a long time and every pair is different. Double-knit socks, dec-orated with unusual ornaments, are among the most recognisable handicraft products in Serbia. The Heritage Museum of Knjaževac keeps the largest collection of these socks.

In 1910, famous architect Le Corbusier visited Knjaževac and, inspired by the pic-turesque architecture of the town, he made a sketch that is now kept in the National Museum in Belgrade.

Knjaževac je grad na ušću dve reke: Svrljiškog i Trgoviškog Timoka. Poseban šarm daje mu živopisna Stara čaršija, šetališta kraj reka i čak sedam mostova.

On slavi snagu proleća i prirode, ponovnog uzdizanja života iz zimske obamrlosti. Danas, Molitvu pod Midžorom prati etno-festival, kojim se proslavljaju tradicionalna pesma i igra, stari zanati i pri-premanje starinskih jela: jagnjeće čorbe, sira i belmuža. Tradicionalno, belmuž pripremaju muškarci!

A žene?

TOPOLA

Naïve painting with its vivid colours and abun-dant details of everyday village life, has a long and internationally recognized tradition in

the municipality of Kovačica. The painting “Winter” by Zuzana Chalupová, one of Kovačica’s most famous naïve art painters, has been printed in more than two million copies on UNICEF’s famous New Year postcards.

In each of the major settlements of the municipal-ity – Kovačica, Padina, Uzdin, Debeljača – there are galleries and studios of naïve artists, as well as the newly opened Memorial House of Martin Jonaš. The naïve art of the Slovaks has been included on the list of intangible cultural heritage elements of Serbia.

A particularly interesting venue is represented by the homeland complex in the village of Idvor, dedicated to one of the greatest minds of the 20th century – Mihajlo Pupin. He gained worldwide fame thanks to his visionary discoveries in the field of telephony, radiology and electrical engineering. The homeland complex comprises this great scientist’s birthplace, a museum and the National Hall.

The authentic atmosphere of the Banat village can be experienced in one of the farmsteads: collections of old tools, lace tablecloths and curtains, horse stables... and an exceptional offer of homemade dishes, alongside the music of the violin, double bass and accordion, which are there to slow down and gild time.

This forest area is traversed by the river Tamiš, while the Debeljačka lakes are suitable for hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors.

TOPOLA

Like when you bite a grape, and the sweet flavour soothes and refreshes us, that’s just like coming to Topola during the

Oplenac grape harvest and feeling the heart of Šumadija: in the rich aromas of wine and food, the bustle of the fair and the sounds of the Summit of original folk creativity. The town of Topola is located at the foot of the forested Oplenac Hill, surrounded by the valleys of the rivers Kamenica and Jasenica.

The Oplenac wine sub-region has a long wine-growing tradition, which experienced the great-est boom in the early 20th century, thanks to the wines of two kings – Petar I and Aleksandar I Karađorđević. Today, wine lovers visiting Topola can try the famous Oplenac royal wines and tour the King's Winery, founded in 1930, or some of the modern family wineries of the region. The crowning glory of the viticulture year is repre-sented by the event Oplenačka harvest, which takes place in October.

The emergence of Topola is linked to the royal Karađorđević dynasty. Two endowments of a royal dynasty can be visited here: the first is the Church of St. George – the mausoleum of the Karađorđević family on Oplenac and Karađorđe town - the core of the former rebel capital, where today one can see a permanent exhibition of the First Serbian Uprising and its leader, Karađorđe.

The mosaic decoration of the Oplenac church represents a modern inter-pretation of the tradition of Serbian medieval art. It stretches over an area 3,570m2 and comprises an unbelievable 15,000 colours and is decorated with gilding of 14 carat and 20 carat gold.

osetiti srce Šumadije: u bogatim aromama vina i hrane, u vrevi vašara i zvucima Sabora izvor-nog narodnog stvaralaštva.

Zvižd is an area in northeast Serbia, surrounded by the foothills of the Homolje and Kučaj mountains.

Through the centre of the area flows a very special river – the gold-bearing Pek. In its green valley is also located the town of Kučevo. Just as the Pek brings forth from the depths of the earth precious gold particles, so this area will surprise visitors with its ancient customs, mysterious and magnificent caves, unique waterfalls and secret springs.

Homolje motifs, the oldest festival of folk creativity in Serbia, had a major impact on the preservation and development of legends and traditions. You can find out how gold was once extracted from the sand of the Pek, using very simple equipment – test specimens and pans – and a lot of patience.

Today in Zvižd one can still experience archaic practices such as dancing on stilts, playing on a lilac leaf and the ritual of the Rusalje. In the context of the great village holiday women of different ages may fall into a specific state of ecstasy. There they are called Rusalka women and are believed to be able to communicate with the world of the ancestors, world of the dead.

In the Kučevo area thera are two arranged caves: Ceremošnja Cave and Ravništarka Cave. In terms of the richness of cave jewellery, Ceremošnja is certainly one of the most beautiful in Serbia and, just like the Ravništarka and Dubočka caves, it has protected status as a natural monument.

Zviška, or Kučevo potajnica, is located just two kilometres from the town of Kučevo and represents a rare natural phenomenon: a karst spring which alternates with peri-ods of water flow and complete dryness. There are only 30 such springs in the world.

U kučevskom kraju postoje dve uređene pećine: Ceremošnja i Ravništarka.

Z latar has been richly endowed by nature. The mountain air is pun-gent, full of ozone and the resinous scent of pine. This is precisely the reason why it has been declared a health resort. Mountain

villages and the two largest settlements, Nova Varoš and Prijepolje, are nestled on the wooded slopes of Zlatar mountain. The sunlit landscape is reflected in its large, calm and clear lakes: Zlatar, Radoinja and Uvac.

In the Zlatar areas echoes the clamor singing - two voices alternate seamlessly, while one of the singers “leads, separates and cuts”. In moun-tain villages, one can often hear the locals sing. Clamor singing is an old tradition that is included on the national list of elements of intangible cultural heritage.

Scarves and hats made from domestic wool and decorated with tassels, items decorated with gold embroidery, embroidered shirts and dresses made with effort and knowhow. The traditional handicrafts of Zlatar’s weavers, knitters and embroiderers reflect precisely that precious time of silence.

The Uvac Gorge is a place of exceptional beauty with unique meanders in whose cuts nest colonies of griffon vultures. One can cruise Uvac Lake in catamarans, while the challenge is to visit the caves Ledena and Ušačka.

Near Prijepolje is Mileševa Monastery which houses one of Serbia’s most famous medieval frescoes – the White Angel.

Planinska sela i dva najveća naseljena mesta - Nova

Tradicionalne rukotvorine zlatarskih tkalja, pletilja i vezilja odišu tim dragoce-nim, tišine punim, vremenom.

Kopaonik Tourist Centre is at the top of European ski destinations, and in Serbia, it is number one. The mountain became

popular in the 1980s, when the first modern hotels and resorts were built. It has become a prestigious winter resort. When asked where you go skiing, the most common answer is, “Off to Kop!”

MOUNTAIN OF THE SUNKopaonik is the largest ski centre in Serbia and

one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in this part of Europe. With 200 sunny days and 160 days under snow cover throughout the year, Kopaonik has unique natural values. Pančić’s Peak, the symbol of the mountain, is located on the mountain’s highest point, at 2017 metres above sea-level, and the panoramic view from this place is among the most beautiful in Serbia.

The top class terrains of the ski centre feature approximately 62 km of slopes for downhill and cross-country skiing, providing immense enjoy-ment for all categories of skiers. The ski centre features a well-arranged snowboard park, while safari skiing, a special ski challenge beyond the tailored runs, is organized for adventure seekers.

SNOW GAMESKopaonik is very popular among young people for

its entertainment and fun. In addition to sledging and ice-skating, families with kids can enjoy a great variety of games and activities in the snow park.

If you're searching for some great nightlife to compliment your active holiday on the snow, look no further. Kopaonik has a buzzing après ski scene that is developing a reputation to match its excel-

lent skiing. MK Mountain Resort hotels & apart-ments are situated at the very heart of the tourist centre, providing direct access to the slopes.

URBAN ATMOSPHERE Zlatibor began developping in the 19th century

as an exclusive resort for the nobility. Today, it is a large tourist centre visited throughout all seasons. This beautiful plateau and air spa turned into a small mountain metropolis. A large number of hotels and villas was built there, and in the centre there is a promenade with cafés, restaurants and shops. The symbol of Zlatibor is Lake Kraljeve vode (Royal lake) – a pleasant place for walks and breaks. Ski centre Tornik has four alpine trails and Nordic skiers have a special court at Tić. Zlatibor is alive day and night and it is particularly popular

among young people, but people of other gen-erations love it too – they all enjoy in its urban advantages mixed with nature.

AN ETHNO TALEOnly forty kilometres away from Zlatibor, there

are Tara mountain and Mokra Gora nature park. This area of enchanting beauty became world famous thanks to the museum and tourist rail line called the Šargan Eight and the ethno-village of Drvengrad built by the famous film director Emir Kusturica. Mokra Gora is a quiet and secluded place that can surprise you because there, you might encounter some of the world celebrities who are frequent guests of Kusturica’s fairytale hill. The ski centre “Iver” has four tracks and is located eight kilometres from Drvengrad.

A NEW FAVOURITE SPOT The youngest tourist centre, Stara Planina, has presented to the fans of

winter sports its trump cards: plenty of snow, the first and only ski gondola in Serbia, an extensive network of ski slopes, the Stara Planina hotel. The hotel's amenities are adapted for family vacation. For those youngest, animators organise various playgrounds, and there is a skating rink in the courtyard of the complex. The trademark of the mountain are Babin zub sheer rock and Jabučko ravnište valley. For the mountain beauty of the east, this is only the first step, to be crowned with the construction of a luxury resort.

ZLATAR & DIVČIBAREIn an effort to improve the level of service, the tourist and sports centre “Zlatar”

has completely renovated the hotel "Panorama" and adapted its offer to the needs of modern tourists. Also, ready for this winter season are the boutique hotel "Zlatarski Zlatnik" as well as a number of other small hotels, villas and vacation houses. Zlatar ski resort is located in Nova Varoš downtown – the track "Briježđa" is 1,200 metres long, and there are two milder slopes for children and beginners.

On Maljen Mountain, near Valjevo, at an altitude of about 1,000 metres, there is the famous tourist centre Divčibare. Skiers have several ski slopes, and the longest is Crni Vrh. Three smaller trails are great for children and unskilled ski-ers. The best hotel offer can be found at "Hotel Vujić Divčibare", "Hotel Maljen", and "Hotel Zamak".

MY SERBIA – WINTER ADVENTUREThe Tourist Organisation of Serbia (TOS) is responsible for the promotion of

the winter offer of Serbia, together with its partners – public company "Ski Resorts of Serbia", the Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs HORES, local tourism organisations and hoteliers; the TOS advertises selected Serbian ski destinations in the national and international media. The cam-paign is run in the domestic market, as well as in the markets of neighbour-ing countries.

PLANINA SUNCA Na vrhovima Kopaonika, najvećeg planinskog

ma, pre svega zbog mnoštva zabavnih sadražaja i dinamičnog noćnog života.

MOJA SRBIJA – ZIMSKA AVANTURAPromociju zimske ponude Srbije, zajedno s par-

tnerima – Javnim preduzećem „Skijališta Srbije“, Udruženjem hotelijera i restoratera HORES, lokal-nim turističkim organizacijama i hotelijerima, vodi Turistička organizacija Srbije koja u odbranim doma-ćim i inostranim medijima oglašava odabrane srp-ske ski destinacije.

The monograph “Cities of Serbia” presents urban Serbia and tries to show the readers the life in Serbian towns in recent centu-

ries. Journalist, photographer and lover of Serbia, Dragan Bosnić, tells a story about the emergence of provincial towns, settlements, free royal towns and a metropolitan city in Serbia, their development, phases, appearance, symbols, famous residents,

tavern tales and anecdotes from the lives of ordi-nary people. On this occasion, he walked down the cobbled paths of Serbia and recorded with his camera some distinctive details of the city life.

As you read the book, you will find out how old Serbian towns are, which are important events that marked their history, you’ll learn to recognise the city by its coat-of-arms, you’ll walk through the

most beautiful city squares, you’ll recall the prod-ucts by which we remembered certain places, such as Smederevac wood cooker from Smederevo, Fiat 500 car, Honeymoon Heart biscuits, Eurocrem sweet spread, Merima children's soap, famous Kikinda flour...

All that will take the reader on a journey down the paved paths of Serbia with a bit of nostalgia and a lot of faith in the future.

O stvaranju palanki, kasaba, varoši, slobodnih kraljevskih gradova i velegrada u Srbiji, njihovom razvoju, menama, izgledu, znamenjima, slavnim stanovnicima, kafanskim pričama i anegdotama iz života obič-

THE MAN FROMTHE GREAT PLAINS

I see Vojvodina as a plant nursery, the plain, from which ideas sprout. More than three hundred years ago, the multinational and multicultural

seed was sown here. This seed is being nurtured and it today brings frut, tells Bane Radošević, artist, designer, cartoonist and writer, as we stand at the Petrovaradin fortress next to the famous clock where his gallery – attelier named Institute of Transfusion of Design or the ITD.

"In order to present the richness of diversity and of the cultural life in Vojvodina, there are plates brought from the nearby fields – they hold many of my works that I created in the past thirty years. There are also many posters for shows, exhibitions, book promotions, events and culture events in a variety of languages. This setting indicates that sprouting from the plains are people who enrich each other with their different cultures. I am a gardener who cultivates new seedlings. Actually, I'm a big fan of this area and of the large river that flows here, of this stone and the walls of the Petrovaradin fortress.

In the fertile soil of the Pannonian Plain and the Danube region, at the crossroads of routes between the East and West, peoples from prehis-toric times settled. Overlooking Petrovaradin, the place of original settlements, there is my home-town Novi Sad. A bridge connects Petrovaradin and Novi Sad, and bridge between people are the most important bridges," says Bane Radošević, adding that he writes his poetic visual art in an international language – the language of sym-bols that everyone understands. So he packed the Vojvodina soil as well as water, fire and air into the book "An Anthology of Visual Poetry". And when you open the small bottle, you feel the fresh air of Vojvodina, which for centuries Serbs, Croats, Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, Russians, Czechs as well as all those who come to Vojvodina breathe in.

VRTLARVELIKERAVNICE

i multikulturalnosti.

The Hotel Rivijera, one of the most beautiful on the Montenegrin coast, will soon get a new family member. In the green oasis of the Petrovac bay, a new five-star hotel complex has been built, which together with the hotel Rivijera, makes the unique Crystal Rivijera Resort. The new hotels of this luxu-rious and minutely designed space will receive their first guests in early summer.

BRUSHED CRYSTAL OF THE SOUTHERN ADRIATIC

The Hotel Rivijera is the foundation and the first pillar of the venture that was launched eleven years ago when the married couple

Pela and Mišo Perović, the owners of a construc-tion company from Berlin, decided to invest what they had earned hard in Europe in Montenegro, a country of their origin.

As they had enough faith in what they were up to, they joined the world of hospitality industry in the lovely town of Petrovac and purchased a hotel there and completely renovated it. The result of that venture was the Rivijera, a four-star hotel, which has over the years gained its regular custom-ers, an enviable reputation and received numerous prestigious international awards.

CLEAR VISION OF THE NEW The dedicated work in improving the amenities

of the Hotel Rivijera, as well as acquired experi-ences resulted in a bold idea getting “crystalised”. For many years there was an empty parcel of land standing just next to the well-maintained park that surrounds the Rivijera. Like the laws of physics by which the waves radiate, it was as if the Rivijera was sending a message to the sur-rounding area. A new vision was born that started coming into life in 2012, when the foundations of the Crystal Rivijera – a “next-generation” hotel – were laid. The name of the hotel complex was carefully selected – it reminds of harmony, purity and perfection of the natural crystal, which are

characteristics of the Petrovac region, but also refers to the aesthetics of the world shaped by the builders. The Crystal Rivijera was built as a luxury complex in the category of five stars. In designing, the principle of pure, “green” energy was used, which is also another proof that build-ers follow the vision of the future.

Summarising the distance travelled “from Berlin to the southern Adriatic”, the hotel own-ers, Pela and Mišo Perović said, “When after eleven years of operation of the Rivijera Hotel, you build a luxury resort with two hotels, and create a green oasis, just 30 metres from the sea, in the heart of Montenegro coast, you feel just pure pleasure.”

SHIP AWAITING PASSENGERSThe Hotel Crystal is designed in the spirit of

Mediterranean architecture of the Montenegrin coastline. Harmoniously incorporated into the con-tours of Paštrovska Gora mountain, on the foam of the Adriatic Sea, with a view to the horizon and the blue open sea, the Crystal resembles a ship awaiting loyal passengers to get on it and sail to the world of harmony, satisfaction and fulfilment.

The complex covers an area of about 48,000 square meters and within this expanse there are three outdoor and one indoor swimming pools with fresh and salt water, medical and wellness spa, beauty and fitness centre, two restaurants, a lobby bar, several themed bars, a pool bar, a health bar, pizzeria, bistro, hobby room, shops, conference rooms... A special place is set aside for entertain-ment of children, so we could freely say that the park and the playgrounds are a kind of an indepen-dent “children's republic”. The rooms are spacious,

equipped with carefully selected furniture, with a lot of sophisticated details.

As the boat with its captain, crew and passengers represents a rounded world, so the Crystal Rivijera Resort is designed as a separate universe where you can fill every moment of the day “to the top”.

AN INSPIRING ENVIRONMENTAnd when you want to step out into the outside

world, Petrovac has to offer the beautiful sandy beaches, lanes for strolling down the seaside, restaurants, cafés... For guests looking for new impressions and excitement, the hotel organises tours to Budva and Bar - ancient coastal towns of Montenegro, as well as a range of adventure activi-ties such as rafting and kayaking on the most beau-tiful European canyon of the river Tara, Boka bay sailing, diving research, mount biking and walking through the beautiful landscapes of Montenegro.

Novi hoteli ovog luksuznog i do tančina osmišljenog pros-tora primiće svoje prve goste početkom leta.

ske arhitekture i Crnogorskog primorja.

The International Women’s Club (IWC) of Belgrade held its 14th Annual Charity Bazaar on December 7, at the Belgrade Fair, to support local NGOs working with vulnerable people in Serbia. The charity event included volunteers from 46 countries selling traditional, national cuisine and drinks, souvenirs, books, toys, clothes, etc., in an exotic shopping atmosphere.

The Bazaar raised RSD 11,711,865 and still cash donations are coming in. One hundred percent of the collected funds will be allocated to chari-ties in Serbia that work with elderly persons, gender-based violence

and anti-trafficking, persons with disabilities, and other groups of vulnerable people. In addition, this year the IWC will help people who suffered during the devastating floods last May.

The Bazaar is not only a major charity event of the IWC, but is also one of the biggest fundraising events in Serbia. The Bazaar was opened this year by Mrs. Maja Gojkovic, Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia. The event is always a lot of fun, and this year it was bigger and more colorful than ever – visitors enjoyed browsing through booths with products and goodies from all over the world. Performers on stage offered a unique and glamorous Tour of the World. Singers and dancers swirled with their music, rhythms and costumes from the Far East, to the Mediterranean, to Northern Europe and Latin America.

The IWC organized a Raffle with many fabulous prizes. There was also a Kids’ Corner, where parents could leave their children for a couple of hours in the hands of babysitters. While parents spent a couple of relaxing hours shopping, their children enjoyed plenty of fun activities.

"Our company has more than 50 years of experience in the trade of dia-monds, their cutting, designing and making jewelry. We believe in the value of diamonds because their value is constantly growing and they

are virtually indestructible. Above all, I believe in diamonds because they saved the life of my family and because all the success that we have achieved is based on the values that we pass from generation to generation. I am very glad that we have been operating in Serbia for 25 years, we resisted all the challenges and nothing could put us off to withdraw our business – the clientele in Serbia knows how to recognise the true value and with the first exhibition of diamonds we want to thank Serbia and Belgrade for being a reliable host to us this year", Mr. Avi Tavisal said at the opening ceremony.

The IDC is an international company with headquarters in Ramat Gan, a Tel Aviv district, which is the centre of the global diamond trade. By developing a sales network, the IDC has opened a number of offices and stores in Europe and the world. Maestro Jewelers in Belgrade is one of the jewelry stores with the longest tradition. To celebrate 25 years in Serbia, the IDC also organised a seminar titled The first steps in gemmology.

Belgrade has seen "eternal glow" thanks to the Israeli Diamond Centre (IDC), which on 16 December, on the occasion of the 25th year of its business, opened the first exhibition of diamonds in Serbia in its jewelry store Maestro Jewelers. The exhibition features over one hundred unique copies, and the main "star" of the exhibition is a yellow heart-shaped diamond worth even half a million euros. The exhibition was opened by the Israeli Ambassador to Serbia, HE Yossef Levy, and founder of the IDC, Mr. Avi Tavisal.

STUDENTS IN ACTION

A t ISB we believe it is crucial for educa-tion to extend beyond the intellectual to include socially responsible attitudes, as

well as thoughtful and appropriate student designed action. Action is seen as a voluntary demonstration of a student’s empowerment in the context of their learning, which is taking place within the class-room. Some examples of action at our Lower School: Students taking action in our environment by sur-

veying our campus to decide where to plant new trees and then planting them; Students engaged in study-ing endangered species in Serbia and creating a butterfly garden on our campus to promote butterfly habits in city locations; Students inquiring into various bird species and tak-ing action to design, construct, and install bird houses on our campus.

HELPING STRAY ANIMALSISB’s Upper School philosophy of

giving back to the community and working with local organizations has resulted in our grade 6 to 12 students involving themselves in a number of service opportunities. One such service is Animal Hope Riska, where students help with stray animals. The students raise funds for vaccinations

and shelters, feed and socialize animals so they are better prepared when families are found, and assist in finding adoptive families. Their efforts have included bake sales, musical benefit concerts, and awareness drives.

BECOMING A BIG BROTHER AND SISTEROur students are also involved with the “Drinka

Pavlovic” Home for Children without Parental Care,

which we have been partnered with for many years. We run a Big Brother/Big Sister project, where our students provide creative workshops, and socialize with and take the children from “Drinka” on various fun excursions around the city on a weekly basis. The intended goal of this project is to get involved in our immediate community of Senjak, and transcend common prejudices and presumptions.

Another project in which ISB students have partici-pated over the past years has been the “Let’s meet so that we can better understand each other “ project with the Vocational High School in Rakovica. This is a student-initiated project that involves weekly workshops with the students of the Vocational High School, who have mental disabilities and special learning needs. Our students provide social interac-tions and at the same time break barriers and raise their own awareness of the needs of these students.

As part of our school’s continued support for the vic-tims of the floods in Obrenovac, and specifically Dnevni Boravak Obrenovac, a school for students with special needs, ISB students recently painted the exterior of the school, redesigned classrooms, and set up various technologies. Our students appreciated the opportu-nity to help prepare the school for its re-opening.

These altruistic attitudes are an important aspect of an ISB education, which strongly supports the belief that it is through service to others that we genuinely appreciate our common sense of humanity.

The International School of Belgrade follows all three of the programs of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) – the Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP). In all IB schools across the globe, students strive to develop an awareness of our common humanity, our shared guardianship of the planet, and a sense of responsibility towards creating a better, more peaceful world. In each IB program there is an explicit expectation that students take action as a result of their learning.

OUTINGS & EVENTS

“Every child who enters through the gate of our school gets the opportunity to grow, develop, reveal and push the boundaries of

their own opportunities.” - Brigitte MacIntosh, the director of the PRIMA International School, says. One of the methods to achieve the set objectives is to develop different extracurricular activities. From the beginning of the school year, PRIMA school has organized various trips and events for its students: apple harvest, visit to the Dino park, celebration of the United Nations Day, Halloween party and Christmas Charity Bazaar. Presenting the school through the prism of “activ-ities outside the classroom”, we spoke with the school’s director, Brigitte MacIntosh.

Apple harvest that you organised for stu-dents of lower grades was not only a nice trip, but the way to teach children about the benefits of team work. What methods do you use to develop team spirit with children?

- Children grow up in a society that demands expertise in everything. You really cannot sit back and decide that learning from textbooks is enough for the overall development of your child. School events and trip programs at PRIMA could be edu-

cational or recreational in nature. Whatever type they are, they basically aim to keep the child active and interested. Children are intro-duced to new things, some-times interesting, sometimes challenging. Socialization is another great advantage of these school programs. Children get to meet others who share their interests and make new friendships.

Just as children need to be taught appropriate manners and how to handle some-thing fragile, they also need instruction in effective teamwork. This is some-thing we take pride in at PRIMA International School as through everyday activities, games and play, all our children are showing a great sense of responsibility and team work.

You marked the United Nations Day with a fashion show of national costumes and for Halloween you had a masquerade. What role

do these events have in shaping the multicul-tural milieu at PRIMA International School?

- We like to stick to the saying: Your better world could begin today. Learning about diversity and other cultural traditions enriches the lives of children in our school. The UN Day at PRIMA is celebrated by sharing national food and wearing national clothes.Halloween is favourite among all students. Children express their individuality and creativity through their costumes. At the end of the day best costumes are picked in five different categories.

Last summer you organised the first educa-tional summer camp. What are your experi-ences and how will you continue to develop this segment of the school’s activities?

- We were happy to organize our first “PRIMA Summer Camp”. The goal of the Summer Camp was to provide a safe, fun and active atmosphere in which each child is special and all children are taught to respect and value others. We will con-tinue with this goal and we are looking forward to our next Summer Camp.

Dan Ujedinjenih nacija obeležili ste revijom narodnih nošnji, a Halloween maskenbalom.

Proteklog leta organizovali ste prvi letnji obrazovni kamp.

ILLUSTRIOUS THEATRE PRODUCTION PROJECTS

We spoke to Ian Davies, the BIS Primary Senior teacher, about the school’s the-atre production, the joy of creating,

and the impact of acting, dancing and singing on the lives of young students.

- This year we performed a version of "Charlie and the Chocolate factory". The show was a huge success and all 4 to 11 year students took part. The theme of this years show was the importance of family members in your life. The BIS describes itself as having a family atmosphere and the main character in the show learned that having a family was more important than any type of wealth.

The children gained a huge amount of confidence by appearing in the play. They overcame their fears and nerves and found out that anything is possible if you work hard enough. The success of the show and togetherness of performing with their peers created a lasting legacy that helped

improve the atmosphere of the school. It also helps build on our wonderful recent academic success at the Cambridge International Primary school level because the students feel they can do anything they put their mind too.

Our second interviewee was Masha Dakic, Secondary school Drama club teacher:

- We prepared a shortened and adjusted ver-sion of the popular comedy "Noises off" by Michael Fryne. It's basically a play that shows what happens behind the curtains and during rehearsals and what actors are presumably like. I want to mention the names of seven girls I enjoyed working with: Jelena, Milica, Sofija, Lucia, Alisa, Mahsheed and Darina. Their atti-tude and effort made our lessons so pleasant and inspiring. It was I dare say more profes-sional than on actual play rehearsals in the theatre. I am proud of them all.

Asked how a pedagogue values the effect that such ventures have on students, Ms Masha Dakic replies:

- Drama Class should be the least about becom-ing an actor or a celebrity. Through the steps of the craft, Drama Class is a valuable tool for personal relationships, communication, trust, self-confi-dence, self-awareness, creative thinking, public speaking or any kind of performing, for emotional or psychological personal growth, imagination etc.

Through various assignments, scenes or situa-tions given to students they are pushed into team work and are able to explore how they position themselves amongst others, what kind of a reac-tion are they expecting and basically are conflicted, in the best possible way, with who they are com-pared to how they present themselves. The final play itself is a brave step into the public sphere.

- Pripremili smo kraću i adaptiranu verziju popu-larne komedije Majkla Frejna „Iza kulisa”.
