VOLCANIC PRODUCTIONS | Deanna H, Cameron H, Charlotte S, Daniel S ‘BEHIND CLOSED DOORS’ Film Poster Deconstruction Typography: One thing that we really wanted in our poster was to have everything symbolise or represent something in a subtle way that links in with our film. We did this through using the splashes of red and white. This was to represent the characters of Alice and Rebecca and how one is the victim, therefore being pure and innocent so tying in with the connotations of white, and one being the villain and the new love interest – which is signified using the red. Furthermore we made the oxymoron within the tagline (using Dangerous and Love) in the same colour which shares the connotations of danger and love because we wanted them to really stand out to the audience. We further did this by altering the font for the words to represent them even more – so a bolder font for the word ‘Dangerous’ and a softer font for ‘Love’. Images: Straight away, we knew we wanted all three of the main characters on the poster and represent each ones personality through the body language and positioning of them in the poster. Richard: The hands and torso of our main character are filling majority of the poster because we wanted to show how he was the most dominant in the film and how he had the power over life and death – a lot like a godly figure, so the hands represent this because that is often how images of God is presented. The fact that Richard is holding his tie represents how he is a formal business man and from one glance you wouldn’t think he was actually a murderer – linking in with the message of our film. Alice: Because Alice is dead right at the beginning of the film, she technically was never alive and so we wanted to represent this through making her slightly more pale than the other girl – but not so much that she looks like a ghost, because she isn’t a ghost in the film. We also wanted her to be looking down at her feet because it applies weakness and vulnerability. The grasping of the necklace symbolises both the story’s plot and also shows the audience that Alice is either nervous or upset and needs comforting, often stroking a necklace offers this. Stacey: Stacey is the girl who is much more confident about herself and when she wants something she will get it. This is hopefully portrayed through the photo by us positioning her with a slight smirk on her face and looking directly ahead at Alice – silently challenging her. Non-verbal Communication: This is evident strongly through the two girls, Stacey and Alice. The audience/viewer can clearly tell straight away that the two girls don’t like each other and that Stacey is much more the dominant of the two because of how she is staring straight at Alice without any confrontation. Props: Each prop used in the poster represents something about that character or the storyline and allows the audience to make assumptions before seeing the film. The lipstick in Stacey’s hand is put there to represent how she is the flirty, promiscuous character of the film while the necklace in Alice’s hand/around her neck shows how it could be something special to her and could possibly have been a gift to her, as well as showing she is upset and in need of comfort. The necklace however in Richard’s hands takes on a different meaning, especially with the added blood. It is clear that something has happened to the wearer of the necklace – however the audience is left guessing about what could have happened – murder or accidental death? You can either assume that it was the man (Richard) who killed her or could possibly be avenging her death: which is technically both in our film. Film Title: We wanted to make the film title stand out the most and catch the audiences’ eye. The red of the word ‘closed’ emphasises that the doors are closed and not open or anything. It brings in that element of mystery because nobody knows exactly what is going on behind a closed door – they can assume but without seeing it they cannot say exactly what is happening. This links with our film’s message which is literally that you don’t know what is going on behind closed doors, you can only guess. ‘Behind’ is slightly bigger to emphasise the same effect. Setting: Our poster doesn’t actually have a proper setting; instead it has the image of Richard and a lot of black. The black helps to represent that our film is within the thriller/drama genres as well as elements in our film because the connotations of black tend to be fear, death and mystery and so at first glance the audience/viewer knows that our film certainly isn’t a funny walk in the park with bright sunshine, but a possible thrilling rollercoaster of a film with twists that build up tension so that they are on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next.

‘BEHIND CLOSED DOORS’ Film Poster

Deconstruction

Typography: One thing that we really wanted in our poster was to

have everything symbolise or represent something in a subtle

way that links in with our film. We did this through using the

splashes of red and white. This was to represent the characters

of Alice and Rebecca and how one is the victim, therefore being pure and innocent so tying in with the connotations of white, and one

being the villain and the new love interest – which is signified using the red. Furthermore we made

the oxymoron within the tagline (using Dangerous and Love) in the

same colour which shares the connotations of danger and love

because we wanted them to really stand out to the audience.

We further did this by altering the font for the words to represent them even more – so a bolder

font for the word ‘Dangerous’ and a softer font for ‘Love’.

Images: Straight away, we knew we wanted all three of the main

characters on the poster and represent each ones personality through the body language and

positioning of them in the poster. Richard: The hands and torso of

our main character are filling majority of the poster because we wanted to show how he was the most dominant in the film and how he had the power over life

and death – a lot like a godly figure, so the hands represent this because that is often how images of God is presented. The fact that

Richard is holding his tie represents how he is a formal business man and from one

glance you wouldn’t think he was actually a murderer – linking in with the message of our film.

Alice: Because Alice is dead right at the beginning of the film, she

technically was never alive and so we wanted to represent this

through making her slightly more pale than the other girl – but not

so much that she looks like a ghost, because she isn’t a ghost in

the film. We also wanted her to be looking down at her feet

because it applies weakness and vulnerability. The grasping of the

necklace symbolises both the story’s plot and also shows the

audience that Alice is either nervous or upset and needs comforting, often stroking a

necklace offers this. Stacey: Stacey is the girl who is

much more confident about herself and when she wants

something she will get it. This is hopefully portrayed through the

photo by us positioning her with a slight smirk on her face and

looking directly ahead at Alice – silently challenging her.

Non-verbal Communication: This is evident strongly through the two girls, Stacey and Alice. The audience/viewer can clearly tell straight away that the two girls don’t like each other and that

Stacey is much more the dominant of the two because of

how she is staring straight at Alice without any confrontation.

Props: Each prop used in the poster represents something about that character or the

storyline and allows the audience to make assumptions before seeing the film. The lipstick in Stacey’s hand is put there to

represent how she is the flirty, promiscuous character of the film

while the necklace in Alice’s hand/around her neck shows how

it could be something special to her and could possibly have been a gift to her, as well as showing

she is upset and in need of comfort.

The necklace however in Richard’s hands takes on a

different meaning, especially with the added blood. It is clear that something has happened to the

wearer of the necklace – however the audience is left guessing

about what could have happened – murder or accidental death?

You can either assume that it was the man (Richard) who killed her or could possibly be avenging her death: which is technically both in

our film.

Film Title: We wanted to make the film title stand out the most

and catch the audiences’ eye. The red of the word ‘closed’

emphasises that the doors are closed and not open or anything.

It brings in that element of mystery because nobody knows

exactly what is going on behind a closed door – they can assume

but without seeing it they cannot say exactly what is happening.

This links with our film’s message which is literally that you don’t know what is going on behind

closed doors, you can only guess. ‘Behind’ is slightly bigger to emphasise the same effect.

Setting: Our poster doesn’t actually have a proper setting; instead it has the image of Richard and a lot of black. The

black helps to represent that our film is within the thriller/drama genres as well as elements in our film

because the connotations of black tend to be fear, death and mystery and so at first glance the audience/viewer

knows that our film certainly isn’t a funny walk in the park with bright sunshine, but a possible thrilling rollercoaster of a film with twists that build up tension so that they are on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next.
