should expect nothing less for the new year ahead!

With a new website in the plans, new fitness activities

scheduled and improvements and expansions on

annual events expected, the staff at the Foundation are

gearing up for what’s ahead already.

I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone

By coming to our regular fitness activities, donating

regularly, supporting all our new initiatives and annual

healthy events - whatever you do and however you do

it - THANK YOU!

We’re continually moving steps closer to Becoming the

way to making this a reality!

This edition of Becoming is a mix of a few quick

reflections of past events as well as what’s to come

The second annual fundraising evening ofBLING went off with a glisten onWednesday 13 October, this year at thestunning new venue - UQ Ipswich CampusLibrary. The night was a complete successwith a fabulous $4000 raised for the SpecialCare Nursery at Ipswich Hospital, a sectionof the hospital that lies dear in the hearts ofa lot of Ipswich mothers, families andfriends.

A 'thrilled' attendee of the night, LynJaenke, went home with the diamond, fromthe case in which she chose out of 100diamond cases. Mrs Jaenke said, “I reallywish to thank Brad Kearton Jewellers fortheir donation.” She also added, “I’mlooking forward having the diamond set in aring. It was a fabulous night and the SpecialCare Nursery was a very worthwhilerecipient.”

Other event goers went home with fantasticraffle prizes from local businessesMumatopia Collective, Mixed Spice,Gemutlich – Kitchenware, Gaye's HairFashions, Fed up Deli and the Metro Hotel. The fundraising evening also consisted ofsome auctions with generous donations fromIsaac & Mia, Handcrafted Pens and Acrylic

Gifts – pen and Katie Toohey of K82EDesigns. All auction winners went homevery satisfied with their purchases knowingtheir money had gone to a well deservingcause. However once again in 2010 the $10grab bags proved to be the most popularitem with a constant swarm of seriousjewellery addicts milling around the grabbag tables all night to pick up a real blingbargain!

Lyn Jaenke and her group of friends whothis year decided to join in on all the fun arealready looking forward to next year's eventand having been spreading the word on thismagical event. Mrs Jaenke “hoped this ishow the numbers in attendance wouldgrow”. Next year's date has already beenset for Wednesday 12 October at the UQIpswich Campus Library. Jewellerydonations will also be accepted all yearround!

Ipswich Hospital Foundation on behalf ofthe Special Care Nursery users and staffwould like to say thank you to all jewellerydonators who often remain anonymous, allattendees on the night and of course themajor sponsors of the evening KeartonJewellers and Heritage Building Society.

A record 1368 entrants were greeted with near

perfect running conditions for the Ipswich News

Park2Park Fun Run on July 25.

In its sixth year, this annual event showcases both

Limestone and Queens Park's over a challenging

and undulating multi lap course. Marathon legend

Steve Moneghetti headlined a strong field of

international and local athletes who competed over

the Half Marathon, 10km and 5km distances.

In the Half Marathon a strong field of runners

assembled on the start line with 2009 runner up

Oswald Revelian from Tanzania a clear favourite to

take out the event. It wasn't long into the first lap of

4 where Revelian made his move with Hintsa

Mebrahtu sitting closely in second. Both athletes

cleared out from the rest of the field with Oswald

cruising to victory in 1:10:30. Mebrahtu finished

second (1:14:10) with local athletes Andrew Reeves

(1:19:11) and father Peter Reeves (1:19:59) finishing

third and fourth respectively.

In the women's race Amy Spragg (1:24:34) held off

the former Olympic triathlete Rina Hill (1:28:08) to

claim her first major victory of her career. Spragg

was delighted with her performance over the

challenging course and is looking forward to

defending her title in 2011. Tressa Lindenburg

(1:30:29) ran strongly into third position with Clair

Durrant (1:34:22) claiming fourth place.

Steve Moneghetti returned to Ipswich after having

competed in Limestone Park in a national cross

country championship more than 20 years ago. It

was the 'Mona' of old who put on a running display

for the hundreds of locals who came out to cheer

him on. Moneghetti competed in the multi lap

10km race and stopped the clock in a brisk time of

32:17. Bior Arok finished second in 35:25 with

Satoshi Ashidi round out the top three (35:51).

In the women's race, Esk local Tamara Carvolth

(36:41) demolished the field wiping one minunte off

her course record. Carvolth, the multi world cross

country athlete, finished ahead of Angela Clarke

(43:12) with Emma Coman-Jefferies (44:38) in third

position.

The 5km Race saw over 900 entries which included

many local teams and competitors. Brisbane athlete

Daryl Crook (15:40) claimed victory with Ross

Freeman (16:11) and Grant Gwynne (16:30) filling

the top three finishers. In the women's race April

Sloan cruised to victory in a time of 18:52. Amy

Hillier (20:25) finished second with junior athlete

Hannah Jannusch (22:04) taking third.

Social participants from the day gave the Ipswich

Hospital Foundation a HUGE wrap in the post event

survey saying “Good value; Love the green theme;

Good atmosphere; Supportive volunteers;

EXTREMELY well organised event”. Events

coordinator Ashton Cooper said “I couldn't have

been happier with this years Ipswich News

Park2Park.” She also added, “To see 1368 people

out early on a Sunday morning in winter to walk or

run there way to better health was so rewarding for

me”.

The 2010 Park2Park saw the highest participant

numbers yet with numbers set to grow even more

in 2011. The event would not have been a success

without the support of local businesses, sponsors,

schools and volunteers. Congratulations to race

organisers, staff at the Ipswich Hospital Foundation

and all the participants for making the 2010 Ipswich

News Park 2 Park Fun Run an outstanding success.

BMI:Winter often takes it toll on fitness and weight.

So now is the time to step up and resume work

on your health and fitness.

Waist Height Ratio

Waist Hip Ratio

We all appreciate that exercise is beneficial to ourphysical and mental health. The big aim is to eat ahealthy diet and exercise. For some this gives thema great physique and places them in the healthyweight range- now for others it is not so simple. TheBMI is used to gauge healthy weight range but itdoes not make allowance for those who areatypical. So if you try and do everything right andyet you never seem to reach the elusive BMI rangetry and consult the following tables to give yourselfa perspective of your risk.

Waist to height ratio of 0.5 or less is idealGreater than 0.5 is an indicator of abdominal fatand therefore an increased cardiovascular riskfactor. Take your waist measurement as follows:

Measuring your waistline is a simple checkFor an accurate measurement:

- Measure directly against your skin.

- Breathe out normally.

- Make sure the tape is snug

- The correct place to measure your waist is

Divide your waist measurement by your hipmeasurement (both in centimeters). Measure hipsat the broadest part .The target ranges are :

horizontally halfway between your lowest riband the top of your hip

You will need to access scales that determinesfat/muscle ratio or if you attend a gym staff mayassist you with the measurements.

So do your own measurement and reassess yourgoals for the coming months. Summer is a greattime to improve your fitness – the days are longerand it is easier to get up and about. Rememberyour sun protection and use Sun screen, appropriate clothing, avoiding the sun during 10am and 3 pm if possible and maintain hydrationby drinking enough water to replace fluid lostduring exercise.

Fun Family Exercise:Don't want to continue your daily gymroutine over the Christmas break? There's no need to! Why not participatein the back yard cricket game or someswimming in the pool over the holidays! You won't even feel like your exercisingand it's a feel good activity for all! Needsome time away from family tension? Why not go for a walk by yourself tohave a break, calm down and tick offyour 30 minutes of exercise!

Seasonal Fruit Snacks:Fruits such as berries, mangos andcherries are in season around Christmastime. Try substituting snacks that aren'tgood for you with these tasty sweettreats! Especially good for our Australianhot summer days and your health!

Sun Protection 4 Health:Over the festive season you will mostlikely be spending some time in thegreat outdoors. Remember though - thistime of the year the sun is at its hottestand will burn your skin within minutes.Always wear sun screen, hat and coolclothes that cover as much skin aspossible to minimize sun burn risk. It's agood idea to keep out of the sun

between 10am-2pm as between thesehours is when the sun is at its hottest.

Get organized early:There's nothing worse than finishing worka few days before Christmas - or evenworse still Christmas eve - to find you’renot ready for the big day! This will causemuch unnecessary stress for you andeveryone around you.

Start planning now, writing down presentideas for family and/or friends or evenbuying gifts when you see somethingthey will fancy. Even decide in advancehow much you are going to spend onloved ones this year. Buying presentsover time will reduce the impact on yourbank balance and it also ensures youwon't impulse buy like you would if youwere doing last minute Christmasshopping. Buy as much food as you canin advance. If your hosting Christmaslunch why not delegate other invitees tobring items such as pre-dinner snacks, dessert or cold drinks.

These Healthy Habits for the FestivePeriod are guaranteed to have youhappy, healthy and smiling!
