Becoming a surrogate mother is one of the biggest gifts you can give to a couple that wants to start a family. Surrogacy has given hope to many couples that are unable to have a child of their own due to biological or medical conditions. There are two ways one can become a surrogate. The first is called gestational surrogates and the other is traditional surrogate.

Gestational surrogacy is known as in vitro fertilization. This process involves taking a healthy egg from the intended mother which is fertilized by the intended father’s sperm. The fertilized egg is then placed into the uterus of the surrogate. As a traditional surrogate, the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with the intended father’s sperm. The surrogate carries the child to term and gives the child to the intended family. With this form of surrogacy, the surrogate mother is the biological mother.

The following are a few details a surrogate mother must know before going through with surrogacy:

• She should have delivered at least one healthy child prior to applying for surrogacy.

• A commitment to give the child to the intended party is necessary. • The parents will provide all the surrogacy costs. This means a surrogate mother

is able to take all necessary medical tests to avoid risks during pregnancy.• A surrogate should be cleared from any life threatening diseases that could pose

health risks to her or the baby.
