Project 2.5 Scope and Objectives

• Document what the NSMN researchers have achieved over the last 5 years in the 12 projects awarded – repository for

– Transferable technologies

– Business cases and microgrid structures

– Benchmarks

• Identify what elements of the research can be implemented on the BCIT microgrid

• Identify elements of the research that can be used to write a guide for the design of a Canadian microgrid

Project 2.6 Scope and Objectives

• Define and detail the technologies for the 3 themes that can be demonstrated and showcased on the BCIT microgrid

• Identify and assemble the BCIT microgrid systems and subsystems on which the technologies can be implemented.

• Develop, design and test the identified Network technologies on the BCIT microgrid.

• Compile recommended system configurations and design approaches deployed on the BCIT Microgrid that could be implemented in Canadian microgrids

Technology Transfer – Elements Implementable on the BCIT Microgrid

• BCIT research associates consulted on the current BCIT Smart Microgrid Challenges

• Main challenges: – Full visibility & monitoring of all

assets, including DERs and the distribution system across the campus

– Commissioning of a campus-wide energy management system, capable of advanced planning, monitoring and unit cost calculation

• Opportunity to investigate how the research results in their project can be applied to a real life context, the BCIT microgrid

• Exposure to real equipment used in a microgrid context

• Receiving training on microgrid components from BCIT Research Assistants

• Opportunity to contribute to the development of design guidelines for Canadian microgrids

• Opportunity to interact with other researchers and students

P2.6 Internship Structure and Scope

• Project 2.5 will identify research results and technologies in each project transferrable to the BCIT microgrid

• Project 2.5 will provide guidelines for implementing the technologies and general guidelines on microgrid design

• BCIT researchers will provide the information required for the design and implementation work, including the BCIT structure and modeling information

• Interns are expected to propose an implementation of their technology on the BCIT microgrid, and in more general terms on Canadian microgrids

P2.6 Implementation Plan

• Project leaders will be asked to propose students suitable for an internship, based on information provided by P2.5

• Each cohort should consist of a minimum of 3 students, each from one of the themes.

• Students shall register at their own universities, and will be assigned to work at BCIT under shared supervision of their project leader and BCIT RA’s.

• Duration of assignment for each student is a minimum of 3 months, during which eligible costs/stipends shall be borne by P2.6, paid thru their respective university.

• Each student shall write a full report on the realization, testing and evaluation of technologies they implement.

Services provided by BCIT for P2.6.

• Access to appropriate campus facilities and amenities.

• Access to the required Microgrid assets and infrastructure.

• Access to BCIT Research Associates assigned to their particular project for the anticipated duration.

• Access to documentations, as-built drawings, SLD, etc.

• Access to shared space in BCIT technology Center for meetings, discussions, computer usage, printing, etc.

Services not provided by BCIT

• Medical, liability and work related insurances.

• Lodging, transportation and meals.

• Those services reserved for BCIT registered students.
