• a series of sentences that are – organised – coherent (logical)– related to a single topic

• contains many different kinds of information

Topic Sentence

• is the most important sentence in a paragraph

• has two parts:1) topic

2) controlling idea

Topic Sentence

is divided into 2 parts:

1) topic• states the subject of the paragraph • e.g.: beautiful Malaysia

2) controlling idea• states what the paragraph will say about the topic• controls or limits the topic to a very specific point or points

(the precautions for, the advantages of, the reasons for, the causes/effects of, the steps for, the ways/methods for, the different types/parts/kinds, the qualities/characteristics of)

• e.g.: reasons (*why I claim so)

Topic Sentence • is usually the first sentence in a paragraph• is neither too general nor too specific
