A QB2 mounted on a PSR seriesregulator is controlling thepressure in a plastic accumulatortank molding application. A DSseries pressure transducer isproviding second loop feedbackto the QB2 to indicate when thedesired pressure has beenachieved in the manifold.

BB2/PSR and QB2/PSR pressurecontrol valves combine Proportion-Air’s closed loop electronic pressurecontrol valve and ProAir seriesvolume booster into one completepackage. Output pressure isproportional to an electrical signalinput. Three components make upthe valve package: BB2 or QB2electro-pneumatic valve, an externaltransducer, and ProAir electro-pneumatic valve regulator.

BB2/QB2Theory of Operation

At the heart of this package is theBB2 or QB2 closed loop electronicpressure control valve. The BB2 orQB2 is a complete closed loopsystem consisting of valves,manifold, housing and electroniccontrols. Pressure is controlled byuse of two internal solenoid valves.One valve functions as inlet control,the other as exhaust. Controlledpressure output from the volumebooster is measured by the externalpressure transducer. This transducerprovides a feedback signal to theelectronic circuit inside the BB2 orQB2. This second loop feedback iscompared with the command signalinput. This comparison is thensummed with the internal pressuretransducer signal. The circuit gain isdesigned with priority given to theexternal feedback signal. Adifference between the two signalscauses one of the solenoid valves toopen, allowing flow in or out of theBB2 or QB2. Accurate pressure ismaintained by controlling thesesolenoid valves. The control pressurefunctions as the pilot signal to thevolume booster.

Command Signal

Command signal inputs come in oneof three choices; analog-voltage,analog-current, or 8 bit digital (BBvalve only). Analog driven units givevirtually an infinite range of outputpressures from zero to full scale.Digital driven units give 256increments of pressure includingzero. For multiplexing situations(many digital valves run off the samebuss line) there is a digital BB2

latching version. This option allowsthe user to address which valves areto respond to signal changes, whileothers maintain present state. Anadditional latch bit is required withdigital latching valves.

Monitor Feedback

The BB2 has an optional monitorsignal available for output to a panelmeter or for data acquisition needs,and a one-bit digital TTL signal. Theanalog output is a buffered signalfrom the external transducerrepresenting output signal. The TTLoutput is a conditional on/off signal touse for diagnostic purposes. Thissignal is LOW when the pressure iswithin 1% of final setting. The outputscan function as logic information toother controls in the process.

BB valves come with a red LED lightto indicate power to the valve. Whenordered with the monitor option, anadditional green LED is alsosupplied. This light indicates thevalve’s pressure status. A brightgreen glow shows that desiredpressure has been reached.

QB series products come standardwith a 0-10 Vdc monitor output orwith 4-20 mA as an option. Thisanalog output is a buffered signalfrom the external transducerrepresenting output signal.

External Transducer

The second system component is afeedback signal from an externaltransducer. BB2 and QB2 can accepta variety of feedback signals such as0-10 vdc, 4-20mA, or 2-3mV/V.Consult factory for special options.

PSR Regulator

The third component in this systemis the ProAir series volume booster.This air piloted booster functions asa slave valve to the BB2 or QB2. Itprovides controlled pressure at ahigher flow rate than is possibledirectly through the BB2 or QB2. Anauxiliary air line is plumbed from theinlet of volume booster to supplypressure to the BB2 or QB2.

SECOND LOOP INFORMATION

All BB2 valves come with a matched pressure transducer for second loop feedback input. This transducer may be excludedby ordering option S59. Select this option if using a sensing device other than the pressure transducer provided.

QB2 valves do not come with a matched pressure transducer for second loop feedback input. Standard QB2 valves accept0-10vdc second loop signal. Special options are available for 4-20mA and unamplified feedback signals. The second loopfeedback can be wired directly to the 6-pin Hirschmann connector or through an auxiliary receptacle (S305 option).

To help facilitate wiring, an auxiliary adapter cord H23 is required when ordering BB2 with S59 option or QB2 with S305option. Select H23 cord if using a sensing device other than DSY, DSTY, or DSVY pressure transducer.
