Last week we were treated to a leak of the new Battlefield game, Battlefield Hardline. Now, I love 

Battlefield games as much as the next guy, but this  is a mistake.  I am going to tell you why and 

hopefully when it releases, you will think: “Wow, that guy, Zack, is pretty good.” With Battlefield 

Hardline will come a story about cops and robbers, but going by the trend of Battlefield games, the 

story won’t be about planning and performing heists or stopping heists as the police force, it will 

be an unnecessary convoluted, overly scripted and  linear experience that will play  into the slow 

drip of dopamine that keeps you satisfied until the end of the game. You will never be more than 

just satisfied, but that’s all that they need to keep you playing. However, the developer is Visceral, 

not DICE, and amongst the drivel of games they have made there are some gems  like the Dead 

Space series that shows some promise  in delivering a good game. A simple story that attempts 

something other than the usual AMERICA, GUNS AND BROS approach that most modern shooters 

go for will save this game a lot of grief.   

 

However, I am however‐ing the however, leaving this article in an absolute mess of grammar and 

pointing out that this game is part of a brand. A brand that will want this game to meet with the 

usual AMERICA, GUNS AND BROS approach. There will be limited room for experimentation and 

expect a story that aims to reach for ambition but falls flat on predictability and constant explosions, 

slowly numbing excitement  into boredom. Battlefield Hardline  isn’t going to a typical Battlefield 

game but it is going to be forced to conform as much as possible and it won’t benefit from it. For 

example there is less emphasis on vehicle combat which is basically removing the one thing that 

sets Battlefield away from other shooters. Battlefield marries infantry combat with great vehicle 

combat almost perfectly and that’s what makes Battlefield games brilliant. Battlefield Hardline is 

removing, what is essentially, the heart of the game.   

What the game should be is a game that uses the Frostbite 2 engine to make a shooter of its own 

merit, a game in a similar vein to that of Payday 2. It should be a game where you are a man, a man 

in trouble. Good start, right!? You are then pushed to rob shops and slowly push towards robbing 

banks. It should be mostly linear but has some variations on how you approach a heists to make 

you  feel  like you are on your own  journey.  In short, Battlefield Hardline, should be called GTA: 

Payday (if you were to stick to labelling of franchises to games)! Well, the name could be worked 

on a little, but the gameplay should be GTA: Payday: a first‐person, heist simulator game with plenty 

of action but also plenty of planning and team play. My worries for the game are that the Battlefield 

name will push marketing and sales, but will raise expectations. Those expectations will then be 

met by a game that may not even be average in terms of playability. Of course, this is early days. I 

could be entirely wrong, but that is fine. All I ask of you, my friend, is that if you are excited by this 

game then be excited! BUT, be careful. There are all kinds of marketing bullshit going on here. Don’t 

fall victim to the marketing bullshit!
