Basketball Unit Grades 4/5

Basketball Passing and Dribbling Skills Objectives: The students will learn the proper way to dribble with dominant and non-dominant hands. The students will demonstrate proper bounce, overhead, and chest passes. The students will work cooperatively during skill activities. Facility Requirements- The hoops must be lowered in the gym. There should be enough basketballs for each of the students. Equipment Needed- Basketballs, Flags or Pinnies 1. Warm Up (2-3minutes)- Students will enter and are required to set stretches and warm-ups. To get the students warmed up the teacher will have a basket of fitness ideas. One student from each squad will come pick a fitness cue and have to do it with their squad. This will get students moving and cooperating with each other. 2. Main Content-20 minutes. The teacher will explain the fundamentals of dribbling and passing.

a. The dribble- The dribble is the way a player can move the ball up and down the court. This is done by bouncing the ball with one hand repeatedly. The students will practice dribbling individually with both the right and the left hands.

b. The pass- There are three basic types of passes: chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass. The teacher will demonstrate these passes and the students will have a couple of minutes to practice with a partner. Tell the students they have 30 seconds to dribble the ball. Challenge them to dribble without picking up the ball or losing control of the ball.

c. Once passing and dribbling has been covered the students will be divided into even teams for a relay game. The students will start at one end of the court. The first person in each team will run to half court and turn around. The next person in line will pass them a ball. Once the person at half court has caught the ball they will dribble to the opposite end line and pick a flag. Once they have gotten a flag they will dribble back to the line and hand the ball to the next person. This will continue until the teacher blows the whistle. The object of the game is to collect the most flags from the opposite end of the court.

d. This game will be varied depending on the type of dribble or pass that is being worked on.

e. A second game will be played to work on dribbling skills. This game is called “knock out.” The students will be given a definite area with boundaries they must stay in. They will be instructed to practice dribbling skills without letting anyone knock their ball away from them. Students may not double dribble or travel to knock out a class member’s ball. If a student gets the ball knocked away from them, he or she must find a partner and make five passes

to each other before entering back into the game. This game is continuous and will be played until activity slows.

3. Assessment Section- The teacher will informally assess the skills of the students. The teacher will look at passing and dribbling abilities to identify skill level. This will also help the teacher understand the range of skill to help make fair teams for other activities.

4. 4. Cool Down- The students will be brought back to the middle of the gym to verbally

review the types of passes and the rules of dribbling. 5.

Safety Precautions- The students will be instructed to stay away from walls and the curtain when they are moving fast. They will be told to always keep their heads up when dribbling and be careful of other students. Adaptations for Special Needs- Students with special needs will be able to use dominant hand when others switch to non-dominant hand. Some students may be able to use a softer ball for passing if necessary.
