Introducing Base Word MatchBase Word Match provides a fun setting for students topractice identifying base words and common suffixes. The 32Cards have words with 6 common suffixes–s, es, ed, ing, er, andest. Four colorful Mats have 8 base words printed on spaces toplace Cards during play. Each Mat has different words, makingthis game perfect for repeated play and practice.
Model the ActivityBegin by modeling the activity, discussing every step withstudents. Tell students they will be finding base words withsuffixes s, es, ed, ing, er, and est. Give each player a Mat. Pointout that the base words to find are printed on the Mats.Shuffle the Cards and place them face down in a stack. Draw aCard and say the word then its base word, for example “helping, help.” Demonstrate how the player with that base word has thechance to place the Card on his/her Mat face up. If there arenot 4 players, the word may not be on a player’s Mat, so thatCard would go to a discard pile. Now, with teacher guidance, havestudents take turns drawing Cards and identifying base wordsand suffixes, making sure they say the word and then just thebase word each time. As students’ confidence and knowledgegrow, allow them to work independently.
