What’s the deal with these things?

Page 2: Base corner blind cabinets

Base corner blind cabinets specs can be very different depending on the manufacturer.

Most catalogs do include information a designer needs to determine what size cabinet to call out in their design.

Some manufacturers include the adjacent base filler needed, for others, the designer will need to order separately.

It’s all about the math…If a base corner blind cabinet is installed without pulling and an adjacent base cabinet is placed next to it, this is what we would see…a non-functioning corner space! Also, if a corner is out of square the cabinet will not fit snug into the corner (which is the main reason these cabinets are always pulled).

Where should we start? We know the following dimensions need to clear the adjacent 24” deep base cabinet so it can function:

• Outside stile (1 1/2”)• Blind door opening (dimension included in spec guide – 13 ½”)• “Center” stile (1 1/2”) and additional stile space - for WOLF Classic it’s ¾” – 2

¼”

1 ½” + 13 ½” + 2 ¼” = 17 ¼”

What fills in the rest of the space: •The remaining space left of the center stile

•In our example – the center stile is 6” and we are making sure 2 ¼” is clear, so that leaves us with 3 ¾”

•The other frame opening space – 13 ½” •The remaining stile – 1 ½” •These measurements total 18 ¾” •We know the amount of space remaining is 24”, so if we subtract 18 ¾” from this, we figure how much empty space there is from the edge of the cabinet to the corner: 24” – 18 ¼” = 5 ¾”

•Adding up these two measurements should equal our overall cabinet width

•17 ¼” + 18 ¾” = 36”

You will get questions from designers asking if they can pull a cabinet to a specific distance from the corner. Using our example of the BC42, can this cabinet be pulled to 45”?

Let’s review our definite measurements: •45” from corner •We know the depth of the adjoining cabinet is 24” •45” – 24” = 21” of space •We understand this 21” of space must include the outside stile, blind cabinet opening and space on the center stile• 21” – 1 ½” – 13 ½” = 6” center stile needed •This is the maximum pull allowed for the cabinet

Width of cabinet (36”) + Maximum pull (9”) = 45” (max dist for pull)
