Third time lucky!

Welcome to The Hive London for tonight’s replay with Farsley Celtic in the FA Trophy. Everyone was left frustrated by last week and I can only apologise to both sets of supporters and our visitors for the inconvenience of last Tuesday’s postponement. I wish everyone connected with Farsley well following today’s replay, they are a good club with good people so I wish them all the best for the season.

I thought we played with tremendous heart and determination at Bromley on Saturday and I thought we were very worthy winners. That’s nine unbeaten now and we have a real chance to kick on, starting of course with tonight’s replay. We have come out of a difficult November time and really pulled together as a group and I feel we are really reaping the rewards of that hard work. Now it’s about keeping this momentum going ahead of some really big games to come.

It was great to see you turn out in your numbers at Bromley on Saturday and you were really vocal in your support, so thank you as always for that. To see so many happy faces come full-time was a great way to round off the afternoon and that’s what we’re in the business for. As I said previously, we have some big matches coming up and your support will be absolutely crucial as we look to really mount a push at those play-offs.

Thanks for your support this evening and enjoy

the match.

HistoryThe club was established in 1908 as Farsley Football Club and played in amateur leagues in Leeds.

They joined the West Riding County Amateur League in 1926 and were runners-up in 1936–37. In 1949 they joined Division Two of the Yorkshire League. They won the Division in 1951–52, earning promotion to Division One.

After three bottom-half finishes, league performances improved and Farsley finished fifth in 1955–56 and fourth in 1956–57, before ending the season as runners-up in both 1957–58 and 1958–59.

The 1959–60 season saw them with the league for the first time, and throughout the 1960s the club finished in the top seven of the league. They were champions again in 1968–69 and runners-up in 1970–71 and 1971–72.

In 1974–75 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 2–0 at home to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in a match moved to Elland Road to accommodate the record 11,000 crowd.

After finishing in the bottom four of Division One the following season, the club were relegated to Division Two. The following season saw them finish fourth in Division Two, earning promotion back to Division One. However, their stay in Division One only lasted one season as they were relegated again at the end of the 1977–78 season. After three years in Division Two they were promoted back to Division One at the end of the 1980–81 season.

In 1982 the Yorkshire League merged with the Midland League to form the Northern Counties East League, with Farsley placed in Division One North. They remained in the division until winning it in 1984–85, after which they were promoted to the Premier Division.

In 1986–87 they were Premier Division runners-up, earning promotion to the newly formed Division One of the Northern Premier League. The club remained in the division for seventeen seasons until a third-place finish in 2003–04 saw them promoted to the Premier Division.

Their first season in the Premier Division ended in controversy; Spennymoor United failed to fulfil their fixtures as they folded and the league opted to expunge their results, leaving Farsley ending the season as league champions.

However, the Football Association over-ruled the league, awarding three points to all clubs who had not played Spennymoor at the time they had stopped playing. This meant that both Hyde United and Workington moved above Farsley in the table, with Hyde gaining automatic promotion.

Farsley attempted to overturn the decision in the High Court, but were unsuccessful and subsequently entered the play-offs.

After beating Whitby Town 1–0 in the semi-finals, they lost to Workington on penalties in the final.

In 2005–06 Farsley finished fourth in the Premier Division, again qualifying for the play-offs. After beating Marine 1–0 in the semi-finals, they defeated North Ferriby United 2–1 in the final to earn promotion to the Conference North.

A second successive promotion was achieved the following season when a fifth-place finish in the Conference North saw them again qualify for the playoffs.

They went on to beat Kettering Town 4–2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, before beating Hinckley United 4–3 in the final at the Pirelli Stadium.

They also reached the first round of the FA Cup again, eventually losing 2–0 in a replay to Milton Keynes Dons after the home match had ended 0–0.

The club’s first season in the Conference National ended in relegation back to the Conference North. Financial problems led to the club being expelled from the league prior to the 2009–10 season, although they were readmitted shortly afterwards.

However, they subsequently went into administration and were expelled from the Conference in March 2010

after being unable to fulfil their fixtures, before being disbanded on 10 March.

The club was reformed as Farsley A.F.C. and joined the Premier Division of the Northern Counties East League for the 2010–11 season.

They went on to win the division, earning promotion to Division One North of the Northern Premier League.[15] A fourth-place finish in 2011–12 saw them qualify for the play-offs, losing 3–0 to Witton Albion in the semi-finals.

In 2015 the club returned to the name Farsley Celtic. They finished second in 2016–17, again qualifying for the play-offs. After beating Colne 4–0 in the semi-finals, the club defeated Ossett Town 4–2 in the final to earn promotion to the Premier Division.

The following season saw the club finish fifth in the Premier Division, reaching the play-offs. However, they were beaten 2–1 in the semi-finals by Ashton United.

In 2018–19 the club were Premier Division champions, earning promotion to the National League North.

In 2019 the club changed their playing colours from blue to green and white, adopted a new badge and renamed their ground following a takeover by Paul Barthorpe.

The young ‘keeper spent his youth career at FC Halifax Town, before joining up with their senior team and gained experience with Albion Sports in the NCEL.

Kyle signed on a short-term loan with Clitheroe last season but was recalled at the start of September 2018.

He went on to become the first choice ‘keeper in the promotion winning campaign.

Hayhurst is the hosts’ top goalscorer in the Vanarama National League North so far this season, with eight goals to his name.

Those goals have come in 24 appearances and the winger will be hoping to be the difference-maker this evening.

Hayhurst is no stranger to league football, having previously had spells at the likes of Preston North End, York City, and Notts County.

He had a brief spell with Warrington before joining Farsley Celtic in the summer of 2018.

CERThe midfielder had a big part to play in the game up at

The Citadel and the Celtic’s will look to try to use the experienced player as a focal point this evening.

Syers has enjoyed a career that has spanned across the leagues, playing for the likes of Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe in the Football League.

He joined the Celtic’s from fellow non-leaguers, Darlington where he made 75 appearances scoring 18 goals, before moving to The Citadel in November 2018.

The striker is yet another Farsley Celtic with Football League experience under his belt.

The 6”1 striker had a big influence on proceedings in the first clash and he is influential to Farsley’s style of play.

He previously played for the likes of Huddersfield Town, Brentford, Crawley Town and Morecambe.

He played for Mansfield Town in the 2017/18 season before moving to the Celtics prior to the 18/19 campaign.

LAKELAND IS A UEFA ‘A’ LISTED COACH WHO WAS A FIRST TEAM COACH AT CURZON ASHTON WHEN THEY GAINED PROMOTION TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH.

After working with the Blackburn Rovers Academy for a year, Adam became the manager of Northwich Victoria where he guided them to the EVO-STIK Division 1 North Play-offs despite a nine-point deduction.

He then resigned amid financial issues for the club in December 2016 and had been out of football until he was appointed as the Celts Army Manager. In his first season in charge he saw the Celts lift the West Riding County FA Cup, and the following campaign saw the side crowned NPL Champions in April 2019.

4 YEARS LATER…January 2016 saw the Barnet Walking Football team take part in their very first tournament in Uxbridge but it is remembered as if it was yesterday.

It was a freezing cold Sunday morning and having no previous match day experience, we parked the bus and enjoyed frustrating our more experienced opponents. The Black & Amber were well on their way with Kevin Ziants’ scoring our first goal whilst Shaun Sherrick struck the post as the Bees drew 2 of the first 3 matches.

The Purple B team were not so lucky on the day but the ball was now rolling and the rest is history.

We will soon we will be starting our over 70’s team with a first match versus Cheshunt so if you think your football days are over...the reality is, they could be just beginning with Walking Football at The Hive.

HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Bees had to weather an early storm within the first 10 minutes of kick-off and had Scott Loach to thank for not conceding in the opening stages.

Luke Coulson then smashed across goal leaving our number one to turn his powerful effort around the post, before he did fantastically well to stand up and parry a vicious Josh Rees volley.

The Bees found their feet after the early onslaught and began to create chances to take the lead. Cheye Alexander was instrumental down the right-hand side and almost put his side ahead with 20 minutes on the clock. The full-back cut inside and smashed an effort towards the near post but Ryan Huddart was equal to his attempt as he made a diving save to his left.

With 26 minutes on the clock, Darren Currie’s side made their pressure count. Walker took hold some 30 yards from goal before he beat one to make his way into the box. With just Huddart to beat, he stayed cool, waited for the ‘keeper to drop and poked home to put the Bees ahead.

The hosts were immediately looking for a response and unfortunately for the Bees, they found it within just minutes of the half-time whistle. After a wave of constant pressure, the ball fell for Rees inside the Bees box and he made no

mistake to fire beyond Loach and into the far corner levelling proceedings, a scoreline that was taken into the break.

Bromley passed up a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first two minutes of the second half as Joe Kizzi smashed agonisingly wide from close range following a scramble inside the Barnet box.

And they were made to pay as Simeon Akinola scored his 14th goal of the season to put the Bees ahead. After latching onto a Dan Sweeney cross, he got away from his man and prodded into the top corner to keep his impressive run of form going.

Rees came closest to levelling the scoreline for the hosts, but his side-footed effort from the edge of the box rolled just wide of the far post.

Loach was on hand on two occasions to deny Williamson as the game headed into the final 15 minutes, but the home side failed to find that cutting edge as the Bees secured all three points at Hayes Lane!

HOW IT HAPPENEDThe first opening fell the way of the hosts as Callum Reynolds did brilliantly to head behind a dangerous delivery from an early corner kick.

The Bees started on the front foot and looked to exploit the space in behind the Celtic’s backline, however, Mason-Clark was adjudged offside on two occasions in the opening stages.

On the 10th minute, the Bees took the lead as the ball fell to Simeon Akinola on the edge of the box and he delightfully curled it into the top corner. He left ‘keeper Scott Wynne with no chance and delivered the perfect start for his side.

Two minutes later Mason-Clark took on the Farsley defence before firing an effort just wide of the left-hand post.

Cheye Alexander was next to go close as he fired high from six yards out following good work on the left from David Tutonda. On a difficult pitch, Darren Currie’s side started the better and dominated the opening 25 minutes at the Citadel.

Up the other end, the hosts looked to bring themselves back into the tie and Loach had to do well to turn around a Jimmy Spencer strike. Six back to back corners followed and the Bees had to defend resolutely from several dangerous deliveries, however, the lead was maintained following the wave of Farsley Celtic pressure.

The Bees showed great grit in tough conditions to defend against a physical and gritty Celtic side who were looking to use those conditions to their advantage.

As added time approached the hosts produced their best chance of the half as Dave Syers flicked a header just over the crossbar following a dangerous cross from danger man Will Hayhurst. Although, straight up the other end Mason-Clark stung the palms of Wynne as the half time whistle blew.

Seven minutes into the second half and the hosts levelled as Tyler Walton slotted home as the ball fell kindly to him inside the six-yard box.

Currie responded immediately by introducing Mauro Vilhete and the lead was almost restored immediately as James Dunne saw a powerful effort well saved by Wynne. From the resulting corner, Elito looked to have curled all the way in but it was stabbed clear from the goal-line.

On the hour mark, Akinola tried an audacious effort from 30 yards out that narrowly went wide of the post, it was a good effort and it was another sign of the Bees trying to stamp their authority on the tie.

The Bees were let off with 63 minutes on the clock as Spencer was allowed a free shot on goal from the edge of the box, he should have done better as he fired over Loach’s goal.

The conditions certainly didn’t help proceedings and both sides struggled on a boggy, bobbly pitch. Celtic’s ‘keeper had to be quick off his line to deny Akinola as he burst through from a ball in behind.

With 12 minutes to play, Akinola had a golden chance to put the Bees ahead but after beating his man he curled over the bar from inside the area. Moments later he had a half chance that was prodded towards goal but well saved by Wynne.

Currie’s side continued to look the more likely as Mason-Clark saw an effort at goal blocked by one of a sea of white Farsley shirts. It was de ja vu moments later as Akinola’s rasping effort was blocked again by the defenders, the hosts holding on as we entered the final five minutes.

We went within inches of the winner with four minutes to go as Mason-Clark skipped into the area but his effort went across the face of goal and didn’t quite drop in.

Greenwich Borough have officially resigned their place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division. The Cannons announced the news last Tuesday afternoon, with the league stating that the club had left the competition due to a “business interruption”. “It is with reluctance that the Southern Counties East Football League have today accepted the resignation of Greenwich Borough FC from the League with immediate effect” said a league statement. “We are not closing the business but just withdrawing from the competition. The club are not leaving for financial issues”. The club have won the division on three occasions, most recently in the 2015/16 season.

This weekend saw League 2 club Northampton Town sign former Bee Mark Marshall. The Jamaican signed for Barnet in July 2010, before eventually being released in May 2012, having scored ten times in eighty four appearances for the club. After serving a two year ban from football for a drug related incident, he would go on to have spells playing at Coventry City, Port Vale, Bradford City and Charlton Athletic, before arriving at Gillingham last July. He moves to the Cobblers on a short term deal running up until the end of the season. He has made twenty three appearances in all competitions for the Gills so far this season, however he made just three starts in the league.

Another former Bee on the move in the last few days is Fumnaya Shomotun, who has joined our local rivals Wingate and Finchley, having already made his debut for the club - playing in their 0-0 draw at home to Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday in the Isthmian League Premier. He was released by the club at the end of last season, and has already played for Wealdstone and Hayes and Yeading so far this season. Coming through the Barnet academy, he would go on to make 24 appearances for the club between late 2014 and his departure, scoring on one occasion.

Former Barnet goalkeeper Dean Brill confirmed his retirement from playing at the end of last week. The 34 year old joined the Bees in the summer of 2011, and would go on to make 45 appearances that season, before departing the club at the end of the campaign. After spending a short spell at Luton Town, he then moved to Scotland, firstly playing at Inverness Caledonian Thistle then Motherwell. After a short spell at Colchester United, he then dropped back into non league with Leyton Orient. With the east London side, he helped them win the National League title and reach the FA Trophy final in 2019. However, he picked up a bad hamstring injury last month, which will require some surgery, resulting in the him missing the rest of the season, and potentially the start of next season. He will now join the backroom staff at the club, becoming a coah.

TGOALS FROM ELLIE WILSON AND AMELIA HAZARD MEANT THAT THE BEES TOOK ALL THREE POINTS OFF THEIR LONDON RIVALS

AND STARTED 2020 WITH A MORALE-BOOSTING WIN.

CITYLIONESSES

LONDONBEES

-Lee Burch was dealt an early blow before kick-off as both of his strikers, Nikita Whinnett and Lauren Pickett missed the match with illness. Courtnay Ward-Chambers started as an unorthodox centre forward but rose the challenge brilliantly.

Bonnie Horwood almost gave the Bees the lead inside the first two minutes, she went for an audacious long-range effort that landed on the roof of the net.

The Bees took the lead on the 10th minute as Ellie Wilson finished an incisive Bees breakaway, it was a superb team goal from Lee Burch’s side as they went forward with speed and precision.

The Bees had chances to double their lead as Nicola Gibson saw a powerful strike blocked clear, before Courtnay Ward-Chambers was inches away from touching home a Georgia Robert free-kick.

But with twenty minutes on the clock, it was two for Burch’s side as Amelia Hazard poked home following a mistake from Lionesses ‘keeper Lucy Thomas.

Following that second goal, the Bees came under some pressure from their London rivals and defended resolutely as a corner kick was stabbed goalwards from six yards out.

The professional outfit continued to press but Burch’s side stood firm and looked very threatening on the counter-attack.

Horwood almost repeated her set-piece success from the Conti Cup five minutes

before the break but her effort skimmed the post on it’s way wide. Burch’s side more than value for their two-nil lead at the break.

The hosts tried to put the pressure on at the beginning of the second half, however, the Bees restricted them to efforts from distance which didn’t trouble Quantrill.

Up the other end, Hazard’s speculative effort flew over the crossbar as a lively second half continued.

The Bees could have settled it with twenty minutes to play, as Hazard picked out Ward-Chambers but our number 12’s flick was just wide of the far post.

As added time approached the hosts threw everyone forward bar the ‘keeper from a corner. Priest met the set-piece but captain Quantrill held well to seal the deal for the Bees.

The victory means the Bees start 2020 with all three points and make it back to back victories over their London rivals.

London Bees team:

Quantrill, Wilson, West, Robert, Brooks, Horwood, Ward-Chambers (Finburgh 90+1), Giddings, Gibson, Hazard, Will (Nunn ’80).

Unused subs: Hazelton, Forman, Dench

From: Carla Devine

Being from Leeds, Farsley is actually my local club so this ‘away’ day was a perfect one for me. In fact, for once me and my family had the morning off to have a lie in and get some breakfast out as we didn’t set off to the ground until 1:45pm. It’s a short 15 minute drive round Leeds ring road to The Citadel meaning we were inside the ground for just after 2pm. This was lovely for us as we had time to catch up with familiar faces we knew in the home end as well as having a chat with Darren Currie during the warm up, pointing out the fact that we could pretty much see our own house from the ground! The teams headed inside as more fans entered the turnstile and by 3pm the FA Trophy tie was underway.

The game had a lively start with early attacks from both teams and on 10 minutes it was us who gained the advantage when Simeon Akinola took a beautiful strike, curling it into the top corner. With our 1 goal lead we continued to push for another with Mason-Clark and Alexander pushing forward. The game settled down as the half continued and became fairly balanced. However, we went into half time with our 1 goal lead. I got my hot chocolate at half time and we headed down to the other end of the unsegregated ground to stand unsheltered, just as the wind and rain intensified. Just 7 minutes into the second half, Farsley levelled the score when Walton fired in a shot past Loach. The game was now all to play for and on 58 minutes we came close after a goalmouth scramble and their player clearing off the line. I was convinced the ball went fully into the goal but nothing was given. Both teams pushed for a second goal and in the last 10 minutes it got particularly tense with end to end stuff. However, neither team could score and the game finished 1-1.

The family and I headed back to the car and made the short drive back arriving home by 5:15pm. This gave us a night in to enjoy my favourite northern delicacy of chips and gravy and some Saturday night TV, which makes a nice change to most other weeks! Whilst it was disappointing not to win, Farsley was a lovely day out and it was nice to have the weekend to rest for once. Ironically, because my uni term hasn’t started yet, I will be one of the travelling supporters making the long trip south for Tuesday night’s replay, which we can hopefully win.
