• Conceptual artist • Most of her work consists of black and white
photos overlaid with declarative captions
• Much of Kruger's work pairs found photographs with forcefully expressive and assertive text that challenges the viewer. She develops her ideas on a computer, later transferring the results to (often billboard-sized) images
The “paste up”
• Kruger's early monochrome pre-digital works, known as ‘paste ups’, reveal the influence of the artist’s experience as a magazine editorial designer during her early career.
• All captions are in white ON RED font: Futura Bold Oblique or Helvetica Condensed.
• The phrases of her works often include Pronouns such as “YOU” “Your” “I” “WE” “They”
• Most of the captions address power, identity and sexuality
Art work
• Examples of her instantly recognizable slogans read “I shop therefore I am,” and “Your body is a battleground," appearing in her trademark white letters against a red background.
• Much of her text calls attention to ideas such as feminism, consumerism
Often uses images from mainstream magazines and adds BOLD PHRASES TO THEM to change the context of the way the photo is read.

• Kruger has said that "I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are and who we aren’t."
