He sat on one side of the table-pew, and I on the other side. I shall never forgetit. He looked so white, and I thought to myself he'll never be able to preach—what a boy he is! I despised his youth, you know, and thought all this while thecongregation was singing. Then, when the hymn was over, he jumped up andbegan to read and expound the chapter about the Scribes and Pharisees andlawyers; and as he went on about their garments, their phylacteries, and longprayers, I knew that he could preach. All along I was fully persuaded in my ownmind that he would not remain long at Waterbeach. I could see that he wassomething very great, and was evidently intended for a larger sphere.

Age 17 became pastor of small Baptist church at Waterbeach

•Reprinted 1689 2nd London Confession

I have thought it right to reprint in a cheap form this excellent list of doctrines, whichwere subscribed to by Baptist ministers in 1689. We need a banner because of the truth;it may be that this small volume will aid the cause of the glorious gospel by testifying toits leading doctrines.
