DESCRIPTION

This is a presentation I used with 6-8th grade students in the school library during Banned Books Week 2009. I asked them questions throughout, especially before the "Why are books challenged or banned?" slide, so that they can come up with answers on their own.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BAN A BOOK?

• Banning a book is when a person or group decides that NO ONE should read the book.

• The person or group has the book removed from the shelves of libraries.

Page 3: Banned Books 2009

HOW DOES A BOOK GET BANNED? An individual or group files a

formal challenge with a school or library, requesting that a book or material be removed.

The school or library forms a committee to review the material.

The committee votes on if the material should be removed or kept.

FROM WHERE ARE BOOKS BANNED? Just because a book may be

banned in one location does NOT mean it is banned everywhere. We call books banned books if they have been banned somewhere.

Here at Jefferson, we have never had to ban a book from our shelves!

WHY NOT BAN BOOKS?AMERICANS’ 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHTS

WHAT’S WRONG WITH BANNING BOOKS?

Books provide education on a wide variety of subjects and the opportunity to have an experience vicariously.

Books in a library are selected so that everyone can find something to read and enjoy.

Not every book in the library will be right for you, but it may be right for someone else.

SHOULD OTHER PEOPLE DECIDE WHAT YOU READ?

Parents and teachers are responsible for helping you select reading materials. As an adult, you will have the freedom to read books of your choice and to decide what your children may or may not read.
