Get All The Notes Right All The TimeTo make more effective progress it is essential to get the notes100% correct at all times. Our brains learn patterns. When we learn to play a piece ofmusic our brains are actually learning the patterns within them. Each time we play any section with 100% correct notes, thepattern is reinforced. Each time any notes are wrong, it isn’t. In

fact, the more times we play something wrong, the more ourbrain learns the wrong pattern! Better not to play at all than toplay incorrectly, at least that way you aren’t reinforcing thewrong notes! Educational psychologists currently believe that a pattern islearned after it has been repeated 7 times correctly. If a patternis learned incorrectly first it takes an average of 35 repetitionsto unlearn and learn the correct way! So, if you want to makefaster progress let this be your encouragement for getting itright first time, and every time! How to Get It Right Every Time

It is very simple to play 100% correctly every time. Here is thesecret.  Play slowly and stop if there is something of which youaren’t sure That’s it. Play slowly. It is always so tempting to playthrough a new section a couple of times then immediately try tospeed up. 90% of the time you make mistakes because you aregoing too quickly too early. Take your time. Aim for absoluteperfection of notes every single time you play a phrase. If youare a keyboard player, play slowly and separate hands until youare really sure you are ready to play hands together.

Stop if you find there is something you can’t play, or anote or fingering you don’t know.Work it out - don’t guess.Mark it on the music.

Yes, this will interrupt the flow of the rhythm a few times as youstop to figure out what you are doing... but it means your brainis learning the correct pattern of notes and the interruptions tothe flow stop once the pattern is learned. You can even stopbefore a complex section and take it at a slower speed. As longas the notes are 100% correct at all times. If you make sure you have 100% correct notes all the time youwill begin making faster progress almost overnight.

Patrick Bruce "Pat" Metheny is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He is the leader of thePat Metheny Group and is also involved in duets, solo works and other side projects.  Methenystarted on guitar when he was 13. His talent developed quickly; he taught at both the Universityof Miami and Berklee while he was a teenager, and made his recording debut with Paul Bley andJaco Pastorius in 1974.

One of the most original guitarists from the '80s onward (he is instantly recognizable), PatMetheny is a chance-taking player who has gained great popularity but also taken some wild leftturns. His records with the Pat Metheny Group are difficult to describe (folk-jazz? mood music?)but manage to be both accessible and original, stretching the boundaries of jazz and makingMetheny famous enough that he could perform whatever type of music he wanted without losinghis audience.

Approaching three decades of making music, Pat Metheny still seems the pioneer, the sonicinnovator. As a master guitarist, his melodic and harmonic sense combined with a huge soundarsenal, has constantly teased and pleased his faithful audience. From synth guitars and CoralSitars, to fretless nylon boxes and the 42 string Pikasso guitar both built by Linda Manzer, andhis straight ahead Ibanez PM model, Pat paints majestic sound pictures, portraying Americanlandscapes and worldly visions. His mastery of composition and orchestration is unparalleled. His creative work defies categorization. It's not the 64 crayon box. It's the infinite crayon box. Theend result is often like a soundtrack to a great movie, offering textures and dynamics that reachdeep and provoke emotion. And isn't that the basic function of music? The guitarist from Missouriplays what he hears, plays what he feels and above all creates an art form that connects with thelistener while never being compromised.
