Functions of ball mills

Ball mill is a grinder that is mainly sued for grinding materials into fine powder

form to be used in mineral dressing processes, pyrotechnics, ceramics, paints and

so on. The basic principle of the ball mill is in size reduction and this process is

carried out as the ball drops from the top of the shell to the bottom. Ram

Construction of ball mill

Ball mill consists of a hollow cylindrical shell that rotates on the axis, the axis of

the shell may be horizontal or at a small angle to the horizontal. The hollow

cylindrical shell is filled with balls, these balls acts as the grinding media. These

balls are made up of steel, stainless shell, chrome steel or even rubber. The inner

portion of the cylindrical shell is lined with abrasion resistant material usually

rubber lined mills have long lasting less wear and tear occurs to these mills. The

length of the ball mill is found longer and the diameter is smaller between 1.5 and

2.5 times the diameter. The diameter of the ball mil is 24 feet, there are small

version of the ball mill available in the labs. It can also be used for the making

of cement and processing minerals.

Working procedure of the ball mill

If the ball mill is operated continuously then the materials to be grinded to fed

through the left portion of the mill through 60 degree and the grinded product is

discharged through 30 degree to the right. When the shell rotates then ball drops

from the top portion of the shell and then drop down from the top and thereby

grinds the materials.

The ball mills are the most popular grinding machines that are now used in the
