For questions 51 55, you are to choose one best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if correctedtoo much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other peoples. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he cant find the way to get the right answer. Lets end all this nonsense of grades, exams, marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of ones life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world? Dont worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it.51. What does the other think is the best way for children to learn things?

    A. by copying what other people do B. by making mistakes and having them correctedC. by listening to explanations from skilled people D. by asking a great many questions

    52. What does the other think teachers do which they should not do? A. They give children correct answers. B. They point out childrens mistakes to them.C. They allow children to mark their own work. D. They encourage children to copy from one another.

    53. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle areA. not really important skills. B. more important than other skills.C. basically different from learning adult skills. D. basically the same as learning other skills.

    54. Exams, grades and marks should be abolished because childrens progress should only be estimated byA. educated persons. B. the children themselves. C. teachers. D. parents.

    55. The author fears that children will grow up into adults who areA. too independent of others. B. too critical of themselves. C. unable to think for themselves. D. unable to use basic skills.

Human memory, formerly believed to be rather inefficient, is really more sophisticated than that of a computer. Researchers approaching the problem from a variety of points of view have all concluded that there is a great deal more stored in our minds than has been generally supposed. Dr. Wilder Penfield, a Canadian neurosurgeon, proved that by stimulating their brains electrically, he could elicit the total recall of specific events in his subjects lives. Even dreams and other minor events supposedly forgotten for manyyears suddenly emerged in detail.

Although the physical basis for memory is not yet understood, one theory is that the fantastic capacity for storage in the brain is the result of an almost unlimited combination of interconnections between brain cells, stimulated by patterns of activity. Repeated references to the same information support recall. Or, to say that another way, improved performance is the result of strengthening the chemical bonds in the memory.51. There are many varieties of spider in the American Southwest, but none receives more respect than the western black widow, Latrodectus Hesperus. This poisonous spider, also called the hour-glass or shoe-button spider for the shape of the red markings on its abdomen, produces a venom 15 times more powerful than that of a rattlesnake. However, few deaths can be blamed on this insect because bites are rare and only a small amount of poison enters the body.

The female adult black widow may reach a length of 1 inches, while the smaller male averages inch long. The adult female has a shiny black bulb-shaped abdomen, which distinguishes it from the male of the species. The male is generally brown withred and white markings on its flat underside.

The female adult deposits its eggs in specially constructed sacs that hold from 50 to 250 eggs. The tiny pale spiderlings hatch within a few months and gradually develop into adults in one to two years. Some females live up to three years. The male doesnot fare so well, as it sometimes suffers the fate of being consumed by the female after the summer mating season.51. What does the passage mainly discuss?

Computer programmer David Jones earns 35,000 a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot find abank prepared to let him have a cheque card. Instead he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18.

Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived during a period of earth's history called the Mesozoic Era, which is also known as the Ageof Reptiles. The first dinosaurs appeared more than 200 million years ago. For many millions of years, they dominated the land withtheir huge size and strength. Then about 65 million years ago, they died out rather suddenly, never to reemerge.

The word dinosaur comes from two Greek words meaning terrible lizard. Dinosaurs were not lizards, but their appearancecould be truly terrifying. The biggest ones weighed more than ten times as much as a mature elephant and nearly equaled the size ofmost modem-day whales. The famous kinds of dinosaurs, including the brontosaur, and tyrannosaurus rex, reached 80 to 90 feet inlength. Not all dinosaurs were giants, however; some were actually no larger than a chicken.

Scientists still do not know what caused dinosaurs to disappear. One theory involves a change in the earth's climate. It isbelieved that temperatures dropped significantly towards the end of the Cretaceous Period. Too large to hibernate and not having furor feathers for protection, it is possible that the climate became too chilly for dinosaurs. In contrast, other species having protection, such as the mammals and birds, were able to survive.51. What is the best title for this passage?

Probably the most famous film commenting on 20th century technology is Modern Times, made in 1936. CharlieChaplin was motivated to make the film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe workingconditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin, together with healthy young farm boys, was lured to the city to work asautomotive assembly lines. Within four or five years, these young mens health was destroyed by the stress of work inthe factories.

Scenes of factory interiors account for less than one-third of the footage of Modern Times, but they containsome of the films most pointed social commentary as well as its funniest comic situations. No one who has seen the filmcan ever forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the fast-moving conveyor belt, almost losing his mind in theprocess.

Itdoes not offer a radical social message, but it accurately reflects the sentiments of many who felt they were helplessvictims of an over-mechanized world.52. Hatred is a fundamental human emotion that has deep roots in society and culture. Psychologists believe that group identityand cohesion depend to a large extent on having a common enemy. It seems that the existence of "bad guys" is an importantelement in defining who we are within a larger realm. It could be said that human beings love to hate.

The first signs appear early in life when a child, faced with blame for some mistake, immediately accuses another child or aninanimate object such as a teddy bear. Later, on the schoolyard playground, children in rival groups vie for attention and influence. These basic responses translate into more powerful emotions later in life.

One area where deep-rooted hatred is exhibited is in the ethnic clashes that constantly occur around the globe. Theseconflicts are not only over territory but also involve emotional issues of group identity and unity of purpose. For many, there is no"us" without a "them" to hate.
