Badges , Adult LLN Learners and Personalised Learning
Some Ideas for using badges to support changing pedagogies.
Liz Renshaw
At the start up interview
• Identify key skills, interests, informal learning and work life at initial interview.
• Recognise these achievements with badges for life long learning.
Personalise initial experience and build approach based on strengths not weaknesses
Build Voice and Choice for Learners
• Design initial challenges that align with learning goals of orientation and induction. (O and I)
• Assist learners to select and work through short (O and I)challenges
• Get badges early in learning process to encourage motivation.
Choice in LLN Learning
• Offer variety in delivery modes eg face to face, blended, online, workplace, community
• Assign different badges for different delivery modes
• Guide learners to choose delivery modes to suit their needs
• Acknowledge choice with ‘delivery’ badges to increase students levels of engagement
Sharing Design and Assessment Activities
• Change design and assessment approaches for learning activities to match learner needs eg teacher lead, teacher/learners or learner lead.
• Increase in participation, and engagement building more reflective learners.
• Badges could reflect different approaches to learner engagement in design and asessment
Recognise the Small
• Recognise different levels of skills, engagement and participation with courses.
• Use stealth approach as unexpected awards for learners.
• Helps to build positive self esteem and resilence.
Digital Literacy
• Use a more wholistic approach to achievements
• Integrate ‘outside’ activities with ‘formal’ learning.
• Learners active in digital spheres eg FB, Zygna games, but skills not identified or recognised.
• Acknowledge digital literacy skill sets with badges
