Principles and Elements Assignment Mrs. Fuller, Instructor 1

PRINCIPLES AND ELEMENTS OF DESIGN ASSIGNMENT ALL LEVELS DUE DATE: Monday, January 14, 2013 You have choices about how you will complete this assignment. You can base your choice upon the following:

• Prior knowledge • Desired level of challenge • Whether you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner in visual arts

To simplify the instructions, I broke it down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections. Choose the one that you think fits you best. You may make your choice. All materials for this assignment are posted on my website under the Principles and Elements tab. My intention is to make the documents and resources available to you 24/7 where there is an Internet connection. My expectation is that you are choosing according to your true level of ability. For example: if you have been my student for several years, and you choose a beginner level assignment, I know you are not truly working at your level and I will take this into consideration when grading. OVERARCHING I CANs-Learners will:

• Identify the Principles and Elements of Design • Demonstrate knowledge of the Principles and Elements of Design through visual communication • Identify examples of individual Principles and Elements of Design in the works of other artists • Translate understanding of the Principles and Elements of Design in personal sculpture and

printmaking • Describe personal creations in terms of the Principles and Elements of Design

BEGINNER 1. Gather the following materials: pencil or pen, colored pencil, Elements of Design Worksheet (beginners), Principles of Design Worksheet (beginners)—these are on front and back of the same paper. 1. Go to a computer with Internet access. View the PowerPoint “The Elements and Principles of Art.” This powerpoint can be found on my website from any computer with Internet: http://www.ionia.k12.mi.us/page.cfm?p=2098 A. Go to the Resources section of the page. B. Open the Principles and Elements of Design Folder. C. Find and open Elements and Principles of Design PPT (Powerpoint presentation.) D. Read through the slides and observe the given examples. E. Here is an additional resource that you can use to help clarify the Elements and Principles of design. http://inkscape.org/doc/elements/tutorial-elements.html F. Respond as directed on both worksheets: Elements (side one-put your name and block on it! And Principles (side two.) 2. When finished, submit your work. I will grade it and give it back to you. Keep it in a safe place (Art Folder or other means of staying organized.) This will serve as a resource for a quiz, test, and as a guide to your thinking about design as you create more work in sculpture and printmaking. 3. If I do not think you have done the work or understood correctly, you will get your worksheets back until you have achieved understanding at the level I want for you.

INTERMEDIATE It is always better to take a look at information from more than one source. Therefore, I have given to you many sources from which to decide what you think the Elements and Principles of Design are, and from which you can be inspired to create your Principles and Elements Project. 1. Gather the following materials: pencil, colored pencils, 2 pieces of 12”x18” drawing paper, INTERMEDIATE Principles and Elements Worksheet. 2. Go to a computer with Internet access. Go to my website: http://www.ionia.k12.mi.us/page.cfm?p=2098 A. Go to the Resources section of the page. B. Open the Principles and Elements of Design Folder. C. View all of the following: *Elements and Principles of Design PPT (Powerpoint presentation) *Intermediate Principles of Design PPT (Powerpoint presentation) *Inkscape Elements and Principles of Design link: http://inkscape.org/doc/elements/tutorial-elements.html *And as a resource and inspiration for your assignment, go here: http://awesomeartists.com/ART/mTableOfContentsTheABCsOfArt.htm D. Read through the information and study the given examples. E. Complete a two-part response to your studies: Part One: In the style you see in the “awesomeartists.com” link above, on one side of a 12”x18” white paper, make a grid showing the Elements of Design. Be sure to create a title and put your name on your work in the upper right corner along with your block number. On a second piece of 12”x18” paper, create a grid showing the Principles of Design. Your grids will allow for you to make smaller versions of what you see in the “awesomeartists.com” examples. Your grids do not have to show all of the variations that you see in the examples. You simply have to demonstrate that you understand what each means. SEE THE RUBRIC ON YOUR WORKSHEET FOR GRADING CRITERIA. Be sure to LABEL each section of your grid. Part Two: Respond to the questions on your INTERMEDIATE Worksheet. 3. When finished, paper clip your papers together and submit your work. I will grade it and give it back to you. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME AND BLOCK NUMBER ARE ON EVERY PART OF YOUR WORK. Keep it in a safe place (Art Folder or other means of staying organized.) This will serve as a resource for a quiz, test, and as a guide to your thinking about design as you create more work in sculpture and printmaking. ADVANCED It is always better to take a look at information from more than one source. E. Complete an informative paper as follows:

Using Word, create a document formatted as follows: 12 pt type, Font can be Arial, Times

Roman, or other easy to read font. Titles should be bold, body should be regular. The

orientation (portrait/landscape) is your choice.

Your name should be on the top right corner along with your block number. The title of your

paper should reflect that you are designing it to describe the Elements and Principles of

Design.

Design an informative paper to demonstrate your understanding of the Principles and

Elements of Design. Imagine that you are writing the paper as a guide to help younger students understand the Principles and Elements. Your choices in words and images should be clear and uncomplicated. Do not misunderstand this to say that you do not need to be creative. Creativity and presentation are important.

The overall look of the informative paper should be organized with all of the Elements

grouped together and all of the Principles together. Each Element or Principle should be

labeled. Each section should have a main title (Elements or Principles.)

For each Element or Principle you will need to embed at least one image to visually describe

it. It is important that you follow these next instructions closely: a. Use ONLY the sites that I provide for you here to do your image searching.

b. Each image that you chose MUST BE SAVED TO YOUR DOCUMENTS. The reason I

am rigid about this is that I’ve had lots of experience with students who want to do

something with their image or we want to find it again and it’s gone because they don’t

remember where they found it or found it in Google images with no identifying information.

c. Here is how to find and save good images for your paper:

*use only the given sites to find your images.

*Get the largest version of the image possible>right click>Save As>(go to your

documents, make a folder, or save in your Picture folder)

*Name it something that has to do with the part of the assignment.

d. You will want to create a separate document to record important information about the

image. The information that you’ll need is: name of the artist, name of the work,

and the media with which the art was created (oil, bronze, graphite, etc). Save this

document in a place within your Documents folder so you will be able to find it.

Important: each image must be identified within your document (captioned) with the artist’s

name, the title of the work, and the medium in which it was created.

For each Element and Principle you must write a clean and clear description about each one.

Do not copy what you have seen in the presentations. You must write it in your own words.

You can be inspired by the words of others, but try your best to say it in your own words.

Have confidence

Be conscious of correct spelling.

You must include a reference list at the end of the paper that includes the source of your

image and information.

Here are the sites that you must use to find images to visually describe each Element and

Principle:
